How well do you ever really know the family next door?

Bucolic Newport Cove, where spontaneous block parties occur on balmy nights and all of the streets are named for flowers, is proud of its distinction of being named one the top twenty safest neighborhoods in the US. It’s also one of the most secret-filled.

Kellie Scott has just returned to work after a decade of being a stay-at-home mom. She’s adjusting to high heels, scrambling to cook dinner for her family after a day at the office—and soaking in the dangerous attention of a very handsome, very married male colleague. Kellie’s neighbor Susan Barrett begins every day with fresh she won’t eat any carbs, she’ll go to bed at a reasonable hour, and she’ll stop stalking her ex-husband and his new girlfriend. Gigi Kennedy seems to have it all together—except her teenage daughter has turned into a hostile stranger and her husband is running for Congress, which means her old skeletons are in danger of being brought into the light.

Then a new family moves to this quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac. Tessa Campbell seems friendly enough to the other mothers, if a bit reserved. Then the neighbors notice that no one is ever invited to Tessa’s house. And soon, it becomes clear that Tessa is hiding the biggest secret of all.

I finished this a while ago and wrote my review but have no idea where it went. My notes and everything....gone. I even had it saved on a thumb drive but it's no where to be found. Oh well.. it happens. I'll try this again...

After reading the blurb for "The Perfect Neighbors" I was pretty sure this would be a book that I would really enjoy. I thought it sounded a little bit like one of my favorite TV shows. Needless to say I was excited to read it.

I was right! I did enjoy this book. This was my first read by Sarah Pekkanen, but it won't be my last!!

We really don't know what goes on behind closed doors.

Newport Cove is known for being a very safe neighborhood. In fact it's one of the safest in the United States. Kellie, Susan, and Gigi have lived in the neighborhood for quite some time. Not just neighbors but also good friends. From the outside it may seem like everything is perfect, but each of these women are all going through their own separate struggles.

Tessa and her family have just moved to the neighborhood. Tessa seems friendly enough, a little shy, but she too has secrets....

Maybe the biggest secret of all.

It took me no time at all to read this book. I loved the story-line, the characters and how each of their lives were revealed. The characters were not only likeable but realistic. The struggles these women have are ones that a lot of women are dealing with. A book about family, love, secrets, friendship and much more.

I look forward to reading more from Sarah Pekkanen.

Secrets– we all have them. This book is somewhat reminiscent of Desperate Housewives in a much classier format; think not all the raunchy sex and meaningless drama. These four women who are neighbors all have a secret side to life that the other ladies aren’t privilege to, some more juicy than others, but all were exciting to read about. Kellie is just returning to work after being a stay at home mom for over a decade; she’s married with two kids and trying to juggle life outside of the domestic arena which has her excited and nervous. Susan, who is a single mom, is the owner of a successful business and on the surface seems to have it together. Gigi also has two children and is married to a politician on the up and up; perfectly polished in every way. Tessa is the new neighbor, the one who doesn’t quite seem to jibe with the others and is the most mysterious of all.

I loved how there were little segments of the online newsletter from the community thrown in at the beginning of some chapters! They made me laugh and were totally relatable as our neighborhood does similar messages with many of the same laughable topics and drama. I think this kept some lightness throughout the book and kept a smile on my face.

The format of this novel was very satisfactory to me; I loved how each woman’s story was unveiled individually and we all were witnessing it on the sidelines. I had the opportunity to see how the families interacted in daily life as well as the private life of each lady. Each story was interesting in its own way, but I think Gigi’s was the most buzz worthy, as it likely would be in real life due to her family being “news worthy” and in the spotlight. I think as a parent of girls I could empathize with her struggles with her daughter Melanie and made me really think on how to make sure I keep a close relationship with both of my girls. Kellie was like a train derailing; you could see from early on what was going to happen but couldn’t look away. Susan’s story made me really sad; I think everyone who reads this book will be broken hearted for her. It was very well written but I think her segment was my least favorite to read as it was just so depressing. Tessa, while not very likable, was still relatable for me as I remember going through the colicky baby stage and sleep deprivation and thinking/feeling things that made me question my own sanity. I can’t condone her actions but it made me a little more able to relate to her and see how she could become the person that she did.

In regards to writing, I think this may be Sarah’s best book yet! Highly recommended for fans of Women’s Fiction, especially those who love a good domestic drama.

Although the ending was a little too pat for me, wrapped up in a neat little bow, overall, I enjoyed this book. This novel is all about relationships, revelations, and redemption.

After a horrifying tragedy, of what exactly..the reader is unaware, Tessa and her husband move to Newport Cove, hoping for a fresh start. It is then that Tessa seamlessly infiltrates and successfully becomes a member of a closely bonded circle of friends.

Susan, Gigi, and Kelli are the other members of the group. They soon discover that Tessa isn't the only one grappling with something deep, something dark. Each one of them has their own secret struggle and will come to lean on one another for comfort and support. It is through their own unique battles and hardships that their relationships are tested, but will ultimately prevail.

This was a quick and refreshing read. With the exception of the ending, I wasn't able to find any additional flaws with this book. I will definitely read more from this author in the future.

The Perfect Neighbors by Sarah Pekkanen is a 2016 Washington Square Press publication.

This is one of those authors I stumbled across reading those Booklist suggestions from the library. I can’t believe I’ve never read any of Sarah Pekkanen’s novels, but now that I have, I will be adding more.

The ‘municipality’ of Newport Cove is one of the safest neighborhoods in the United States. The residents have a Listserv board to share complaints, suggestions, rules, or ask for help with something, and those posts are often hilarious.

The community really is ideal, which is why Tessa and her husband, Harry, along with their young children picked it….. well, one of the reasons.

As we spy of the fine folks in Newport Cove, we meet Susan, Kellie, and Gigi, who welcomes Tessa into their neighborhood with open arms and try to include her in their group. As the story progresses, we learn that Susan is career oriented, dealing with the emotional pain of divorce, and is a dedicated mom. Gigi’s husband is running for public office and her teenage daughter has turned into someone she barely knows. Kellie, after years of being a stay at home mom, has begun working again and is enjoying the challenge and a little attention from her boss.

But, little do they know that their new neighbors are harboring a huge secret, the magnitude of which would shock them and their community to the core.

I loved this book! If you like sudsy drama, a little bit of dark humor, and getting an open invitation to join in the complicated and emotional lives of female friendships, which I do, then you will enjoy this book. Each character has a compelling storyline, each one dealing with something that fits the stage of the life they are going through. I loved watching them grow and learn from their various trials and see each of them come away stronger and more fulfilled than when we first met them, as well as maintaining their close friendships with one another.

I enjoyed getting to know each of these women, although Tessa’s story was not fleshed out as much as I thought it could or should have been, but I did love the mystery and think maybe Tessa will be able to move forward on a more balanced footing from here on out.

All in all, this book and will take you away from your own worries and troubles while you chide, cheer for, and relate to these awesome women as they navigate through the perils and triumphs of life.

ARC requested through Netgalley, and kindly provided by Atria Books in exchange for an honest review.

In The Perfect Neighbors, we get a glimpse into the community of Newport Cove, and under the seemingly perfect facade of four women’s lives.

Kellie - happily married with two kids was just returning to work after being a stay at home mom for years.
Susan - successful owner of a thriving business and single mom.
Gigi - married to an up and coming politician with two children.
Kelli, Susan and Gigi were all friends and neighbours. Add into the mix Tessa - new neighbour and wildcard in the bunch.

As is often the case, things were not always what they seems on the surface. Each woman had their own story to tell and I felt like a fly on the wall, buzzing from home to home, soaking in everything the author gave me. It was so easy to get immersed into each character while the families interacted and participated in day to day life.

I empathized with how Kellie was feeling, all the while cringing with a knowing shake of the head at what she was setting herself up for. It’s always so easy to see a mistake in the making from the sidelines. Without any over the top drama, Kellie’s story was real and probably would hit close to home for a lot of people.

My heart broke for Susan. I find that there are many other types of grief, mourning and loss that happen outside of death of a loved one. I think Susan’s story pierced my heart the most. There is nothing more crippling that not being able to get over the loss of “what might have been” or what one perceives to be “what should have been”. I can relate and understand why many people, just like when losing a loved one, aren’t able to move on and heal. I loved her story!

Gigi’s story kept me guessing, mostly because I had no idea where it was going or what the focus was going to end up being. Throughout the story, we saw the closeness of Kellie and Susan, but Gigi, also a friend, seemed to keep herself separate from others. I’m not sure if that was deliberate, but I enjoyed her story just the same. Her troubled relationship with daughter, Melanie, was great.

I must admit I didn’t connect with Tessa or her husband Harry. Even reading about her tough times with a colicky baby and sleep deprivation, something niggled at the corner of my brain about her personality. And when her story finally played out, I realized why I hadn’t been connecting with her. I found her to be NOT a good person. I know others will disagree and see her a victim or relate to her actions, but not me. Nope. I found her to be kind of despicable.

I really enjoyed the listserv messages sprinkled throughout the story. It really added to the feeling of small community, particularly illustrating some of the annoying and humourous parts of being in a community.

An avid fan of the "queen of chick-lit with grit" Sarah Pekkanen, returns following (2015) Things You Won’t Say with another edge-of-your seat domestic suspense THE PERFECT NEIGHBORS with a mix of contemporary, suburban chick-noir, (dark side) mystery, lots of wit, wine, whine, scandal and intrigue. A Sure-Fire Hit!

A modern twist of Wisteria Lane’s Desperate Housewives and Peyton Place, sprinkled with hilarious updates from Newport Cove Listserv Digest social media commentary! Everyone is trying to be the picture-perfect family. Halloween is a theme. Masking the real person. Telling yourself stories about people. Superficial details. Underneath - struggles and flaws.

How far will you go to protect those you love? Do you really know your neighbors, and those who interact with your children?

Welcome to Newport Cove, Parenting Magazine touts as one of the “20 Safest Communities” in the US. A peaceful, serene, and bucolic suburban neighborhood, where anyone would love to raise their family. From new McMansions, to original Tudors, Colonials, and Craftsmans, with street names of flowers.

Meet the families:

Tessa and Harry Campbell: They are the newest addition to the neighborhood. The most intriguing and mysterious, especially Tessa. Everyone wants to know their story. Moving to escape a past, bad memories. Very private. Protective of children. Husband a software developer and travels often. They have a secret. An ongoing mystery. None of the neighbors know. Children: Daughter, Bree, nine. Son, Addison seven.

Susan Barrett: Most impressive, outward appearances. Superwoman. Divorced. A perfectionist. A business woman. Owner of “Your Other Daughter”. Speaker, radio show host. Business franchised into four states. Type A personality. Helps the elderly. Bakes. Loves to cook. Perfectionist. Ideal mother. She has regrets about her marriage. Ex-Husband, Randall is remarrying. She stalks the couple. His girlfriend (her former friend-Daphne). Obsession. Inside she is broken. She is drawn to her clients which have broken lives. She fixes others. Attempting to try and date again. Son: Cole. She has secrets.

Kellie and Jason: She married her high school sweetheart and has never been with another man. Her husband works with his family’s local Scott & Son Hardware Store. Close with the in-laws. She was a stay-at-home mom, and has now joined the work force. A real estate agent, now wearing heels, showing homes, and taking notice of her married broker, Miller Thompson. A dangerous attraction. She is getting attention. She is not looking at her husband like she does hotty Miller. Secret texts and flirts. Dangerous territory. From new clothes to secret lust. She has secrets. Children: Mia and Noah

Gigi and Joe Kennedy: Joe is running for Congress plus working for an environmental company. High stress. Gigi likes to smoke pot. Zumba, Pilates, and a former activist. Likes alcohol. A bit of a Bohemian style. A wild past. Rebellious. Things she does not want uncovered. Struggling with media, lack of privacy, the campaign, scrutinized, and currently having issues with their 15 yr. old teen daughter, Melanie. Their 12 yr. old daughter, Julia was usually cooperative. Also dealing with Joe’s campaign manager, Zach who moves in downstairs. She has secrets.

The women are close friends and love to get together for Whine and Wine night. The newest addition is Tessa, and they think she is a little standoffish. They are dying to get her drunk, so she will spill. The community manager Sharon sometimes joins them.

Readers get tidbits of Tessa “before Newport Cove” mixed in with the sections from each woman. Pekkanen keeps readers in the dark, handing out clues as we move along with a series of events surrounding Tessa and her mysterious past. Tessa is the most intriguing, and my favorite character!
“You couldn’t outrun your past. It was like sprinting on a treadmill—as soon as your legs faltered, you’d discover you were in the precise place you’d, been trying so hard to escape.”

“Moving to Newport Cove was nothing more than putting on a Halloween costume. Tessa had been swept up in the imagining, in the pretending to be someone else. But once the disguise was off, you no longer fooled anyone, least of all yourself.”

From the mystery dog pooper, mechanics, warnings, dry cleaning, mail, used cars, parties, headless Barbie, politics, complaints, (loved the Turbo Tax comment and unsubscribe). Bet the author had a blast writing this book. You will laugh out loud—witty, and humorous, and oh, so realistic!

Loads of humor and razor-sharp insights will keep you turning pages into the night. Pekkanan fans will devour! Each of the women- desperately working through their domestic struggles and family life, while facing the secrets, crimes and mysteries hidden behind their doors. On the surface a perfect suburban idyllic neighborhood.

Pekkanen once again delivers a winner! Not sure I have ever had to this happen-when looking back over the ten previous books I have read by Sarah- each one is a 5 Star! How many authors can write ten books (seven plus three e-book short stories), and each be top rated? I knew she was a rock star, the first book I read back in 2010.

The Opposite of Me (2010), All Is Bright (Short Story E-book 2010),Skipping a Beat (2011), Love, Accidentally (Short story e-book 2011), These Girls (2012), Beginning Again (Short Story e-book 2012), The Best of Us (2013), Catching Air (2014), Things You Won't Say (2015), The Perfect Neighbors (2016).

From fears and anxieties of women, motherhood, marriage, and crossing over to the dark side with a bit of mystery, suspense, and impending danger. A suburban chick-noir! The idea that you can never really know your husband, partner, parent or neighbor- intriguing!

I love the way my top three chick lit authors, Sarah Pekkanen, Emily Giffin, and Jennifer Weiner have taken readers from women in their 20s, 30s, and now 40s. From single, dating, marriage, divorce, motherhood, and family.

Fans of Paula Treick DeBoard’s The Drowning Girls (2016) will love the idyllic prestigious community and the scandalous secrets of the neighbors as well as Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies (2014).

This would be a great movie! Or a DH remix comeback. While reading, I continued to imagine which Desperate Housewives’ (2004-2012) character related to each of the women in THE PERFECT NEIGHBORS. I had to double up, since DH sometimes had five women and we have four. Here is my take:

Kellie (Teri Hatcher-Susan Mayer). A romantic, married to plumber similar to hardware husband. Mix of a real estate agent (Edie Britt/Nicollette Sheridan). A little like Gabrielle Solis—Beautiful, heels, desiring attention-Wanting her cake and eat it too.
Tessa (Felicity Kendall Huffman- Lynette Scavo). Frazzled mom, control freak, walks on the edge, impulsive, husband takes orders. Devious.
Susan (Marcia Cross-Bree Van de Kamp) Totally Bree! Can do anything. Queen of the neighborhood. The perfectionist, cooking, business, and stalker. Whose perfection masks major dysfunction and can cross to the darker side.
Gigi (Eva Longoria-Gabrielle Solis) Shady past, rebel, successful husband. Younger guy creating problems. In some ways she is also like Lynette Scavo with her pot. She also reminds me a little of (Edie Britt/Nicollette Sheridan).

(Brenda Lee Strong-Mary Alice Young) DH narrator, would have a field day with Tessa’s character and her haunting past.

Anyone want to weigh in with their vote? Would love to hear more.

Note for publisher: PS. When it is time for the reprint, please put a dog on the cover somewhere. The dog poop commentary is priceless (a trademark)! I almost want to see an upscale gated community entrance with immaculate landscaping, and a dog pooping in the corner.

You MUST read this one to find out Tessa's secret! Loved it. I hope we hear more from these colorful characters.

I see a new series here. Take a new neighborhood for each book, three or four families, and keep the Listserv Digest coming!

This was a pretty great read. In signature Sarah Pekkanen fashion, the characters are relatable, the storyline is engaging and it's so easy to lose yourself in both.

Every once in a while, it’s nice to be reminded that appearances don’t mean anything in the scheme of things. It’s so easy to look at other people and think their lives must be perfect, but the reality is everybody struggles. And everybody keeps secrets. Like this story so blatantly points out - there is always more than meets the eye.

. . . dangerous secrets are as corrosive as acid.

The story is centered around four women, all neighbors, dealing with the woes of marriage and raising children. They’re each struggling in difference aspects of their lives, but they have each other.
Susan - Newly divorced, she’s struggling with the death of her relationship and the loss of a close friend. She was definitely one my favorites. I couldn’t blame her for feeling so devastated and broken. That would be a tough pill to swallow, but she kept it together.

Gigi- A free spirit, she sort of felt like the mother of the group. I liked the supportive relationship she had with her husband and loved that she always stood up for what she believed in.

Tessa - I seriously was intrigued with her story from the very beginning. Her family was new to the neighborhood and the author alluded to the reasons for their sudden move, but until the full story came out, I had no idea. Wow! I was imagining something completely different.

Kellie - Also one of my favorites, she struggled with her marriage and the monotony of everyday life. I think she took things for granted, but made the right decision in the end.
I liked each of these women for different reasons. In fact, I found myself wishing I was a part of this circle of friends. It was easy to sympathize with each of them and what they were going through.

The best part? They weren’t gossipy or judgmental. They were real with each other. I can’t remember the last time I read a book that didn’t have catty women. That’s not to say they shared every secret, but they knew they could count on each other. Sometimes as women, I think we are judgmental and competitive with one another, when we could be cheering each other on, instead. That’s what this book boiled down to for me - friendship, family and letting go of regrets.

If you haven't read a Sarah Pekkanen book yet, I highly recommend picking one up. These Girls is my absolute favorite.

I've would have never read this book if it hadn't been for Liane Moriarty. Ever since I binge read her books, I've been searching for something similar. Something fresh, funny and quirky with a page-turning storyline. I'm glad this book popped up. It's not Liane Moriarty but I think her fans would like it.

I have read every one of Sarah Pekkanen's books and always look forward to them. Sarah has a great way with characters--she writes realistic ones and puts them in realistic settings. This book is no exception. When Tessa moves away from her old town to Newport Cove to escape a terrible secret, she brings her fears and insecurities along with her. Though Newport Cove is one of the safest neighborhoods in the US, it doesn't mean that people don't have secrets. Like her new neighbor, Kellie, who is back to work after years at home and is dangerously attracted to a co-worker. Or Gigi whose husband is running for office who struggles with her teenaged daughter. Unlike many books these days, it's not the secrets that intertwine these characters, but their friendships. You'll want to read this for sure.

Perhaps it was the timing of when I read this book—right after reading a powerful non-fiction about the death of a young American woman in South Africa—that affected my opinion of The Perfect Neighbors by Sarah Pekkanen.

I was excited to read this novel that takes place in a small American town, one in which you wouldn’t be afraid walk alone in at 2 o’clock in the morning. In fact, Newport Cove is one of the 20 safest cities in the country. That may be the best thing I can say about this story of four suburban women with children who live in a close-knit neighborhood where the women get together for “wine and whine” night and to gossip about all the goings-on in the neighborhood. The description of the book states that Newport Cove is a town full of secrets and this is true but there is very little here that hasn’t been covered in any chick lit novel.

Kellie and her husband were high school sweethearts who married and have lived a ho-hum life in Newport Cove. However, Kellie has recently gone back to work selling real estate and predictably falls for a co-worker who shows her enough attention that she begins to see what she has been missing out on. Her friend, Susan, is recently divorced and is trying to accept that her ex-husband has moved on while she has been unable to. Gigi is married to Joe who is running for public office and the couple is trying to maintain family privacy, despite a young campaign intern who moves in with them and their teenage daughters. The best secret, however, is the one that is held by Tessa and her husband, the newest couple to move to Newport Cove. The exact secret is not revealed until two-thirds of the book, long past the point when I found much to interest me.

That, perhaps, is the problem. The women’s lives seemed formulaic, as if the author had to squeeze in as much dysfunction as she could in one novel. I found most of it shallow and predictable. For me, I think a story revolving solely around Tessa’s secret would have been much more interesting, as it is a serious subject matter, yet it was handled so flippantly and almost like an afterthought. By the time the book ended it was all tied up in a neat little package and everyone went back to their boring suburban lives.

Again, perhaps I wanted more from this book and other readers might find it holds their interest. It just didn’t work for me. I appreciate the opportunity to read an ARC of this book and my thanks goes out to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley. This one just wasn’t for me.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I have to say I am impressed. Newport Cove is the setting and the folks who live here are very happy as they are considered one of the twenty safest neighbourhoods in the United States, quite an honour they think. The story revolves around four women, Susan, Gigi, Tessa and Kellie and I grew to really care about these characters as the book progresses. What really happens at home compared to the face we put on each day to go out and see the world? this is not a perfect world as the residents would like you to think and there are many secrets and twists and turns as the story moves along. We all tend to look at others at times and wish for what they have but in doing so we may discover that things are not as rosy as we think. A great read and I would recommend highly recommend this book.

Actual footage of me whenever any of my neighbors attempts to speak to me . . . .

Buuuuuuuuuuut, when it comes to books about neighborhoods?????

This one had a whole bunch of ‘em and all with skeletons waiting to fall out of their closets. Kellie, the stay-at-home mom who has just obtained her real estate license and is heading back into the workforce; Susan, who is still having a hard time dealing with the fact that her ex-husband is moving on; Gigi, dealing with the delight of a pubescent daughter and husband running for Congress; and Tessa, the new kid on the block . . . .

This was right up my alley. Aside from the cover . . . .

Why don’t publishers just put a house on everything? I mean, that’s what I would do *wink*

Three and a half stars.
Newport Cove is rated to be one of the top twenty safest neighbourhoods in the United States, in which to live. It also seems to be a place where people interact and care for each other. So it looks like an ideal place for Tessa, Harry and their two young children to move to. In Newport Cove Tessa meets Kellie, Gigi, and Susan. Each of these women has a secret. Of them all, Tessa’s is no doubt the biggest. But just maybe she can make a new life in this community and hopefully leave the past behind.
I liked getting to know the characters and the individual circumstances and problems. I also liked these two quotes. ‘Possessions are just stuff. They don’t represent who we are.’ The other one was: ‘Marriage is like a muscle. You have to work at keeping it strong so it doesn’t atrophy.’ Maybe if more of us took those words to heart, less marriages in society would be floundering?
I also liked the Newport Cover Listserv Digest that starts off many of the Newport Cover chapters. They are, on the whole amusing, though after a while I got sick of the dog poop. Other chapters are of Tessa before the move to Newport Cove. These are clearly marked. Over the course of the book Tessa’s secret is revealed. When it is, to me, the ending didn’t quite gel with what had gone before, even though I had guessed the secret. The cover states this is ‘A compelling and suspenseful tale.’ I didn’t quite find it that but it was an interesting enough read. My first book by this author, I would be keen to read another.

The setting of this book si very similar to desperate housewives series. living in perfect and safe neighbourhood, perfect family. and everyone have a secret...

i found gigi is the most lame character. her passive dealing with her teenage daughter irritates me greatly. i feel like i want to shake her and scream at her.

the plot, the twist and the climax i found very disappointing to my taste. perhaps i am hoping for much dramatize ending. but this one felt flat.

the author building the characters up is also dragging.

My Rating: 4.5/5 stars

My Review: After I started this book not a whole lot got done around here - this reader was well and truly riveted. Apparently I live under the proverbial rock because this is the first book I've read by Sarah Pekkanen. Needless to say, I was very impressed with her writing style and her incorporation of modern issues within a group of well-rounded, and interesting female characters.

The Perfect Neighbor focuses on the lives of four women each with her own unique personality and issues:
• Susan - successful business owner and single mom who is struggling to deal with her divorce
• Kellie, the long-time married mom of two who has just went back to work outside the home after years of being a stay-at-home mother
• Gigi, married to a future politician and mother of two
• Tessa, wife and mother of two who recently and abruptly uprooted her family to move into the neighbourhood
These four women live in Newport Cove, a highly sought after area that is hailed as "one of the 20 safest neighborhoods in America". But even within this bucolic neighbourhood secrets abound. Each of these women have their own issues to deal with including adulterous thoughts, learning to pick up the pieces after a divorce, dealing with a crumbling relationship with a teenage child and a secret that could destroy the new life they've built with their family.

What amazed me was how easily and thoroughly I was mesmerized by each of the women's stories. They were each given page time to tell their own tales and I found myself drawn into their lives fairly evenly. As a reader I felt like I got a bird's eye view of their family squabbles, insecurities and issues as they struggled with fears and uncertainties within some of their most influential and important relationships.

Secrets - we all have them - and so do Pekkanen's main characters. While all of the issues were quite serious some had a more emotional tone. To balance out the drama, at the beginning of chapters she includes funny posts from the neighbourhood residents from their online interactive newsletter. These sometimes banal yet funny responses to the 'issues' of living in their neighbourhood helped to bring some levity to such an issue laden read.

After I finished reading this book I sat back to digest it and I came to the conclusion that although there is a mystery/suspense aspect to the book The Perfect Neighbors is much more about the struggles each of these women face. Pekkanen has given these four well-rounded characters clear and distinct voices as they deal with their own issues, which are quite pertinent to today's woman. The mystery aspect was secondary but added a nice pull throughout the book and a suspenseful scene towards the end. Part of me wishes that there was a bigger twist to the big reveal but overall it flowed well with the rest of the story.

In the end, I really enjoyed this book and it can firmly be put in the 'hard-to-put-down' pile. Fans of Liane Moriarty's Big Little Lies will enjoy this book.

Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this book! I listened on audible and it was so engaging it made the elliptical at the gym fun. This is the fun, I couldn't put down kind of 5 star read. It was about a perfect neighborhood with perfect families. Of course there were many secrets, lies and mistruths including infidelity, trouble with kids/teens, trust, relationships, and more. I really liked how in between the chapters the author wrote some "social media" type neighborhood posts about all sorts of funny things. I had never read this author before, but would recommend her to someone looking for an entertaining read about the drama of family life. I will also be checking out what else this author has written.

Um, this book has a ton of high-star reviews and I can't fathom why. If you like Liane Moriarty (which I mostly do), this book will irritate you; it's like artificial sweetener: A poor substitute for the real thing and far more harmful to your body (in this instance, possibly inducing boredom). On the cover, a review claims it is a "compelling and suspenseful tale," but I really didn't care if any of the "suspenseful" elements, like one woman possibly having an affair or another being convicted for murder, unfolded. I cared just as much as seeing if Reece's kids learned to shut the car door.
There are glimmers of a humorous tone when the women are described: "Maybe from Randall's girlfriend; when in doubt, Susan found it convenient to assign her blame" and the listserv thread, but, otherwise Pekkanen just doesn't have strong authorial voice (9). The four women were just flat with few defining characteristics to make them distinguishable. In fact, I found it difficult to remember which of the four protagonists' POVs I was reading until midway through. I was disappointed with the women too; each woman had one major issue to deal with: Marriage, possible affair, divorce, murder (? Yeah, it comes out of left field and never seems to fit in the same book), and that's it. Plus, Pekkanen's lack of writing craft makes for basic writing style, which I'd much rather read discussing the antics of Reece (who only exists in the listserv) and her Barbie beheading, fart-loving sons.
I do think that Kellie's struggle was the most compelling. She was so complacent in her life until she wanted a change: "When had her husband disappeared from her dreams?" (37). So many people can identify with the situation where you meet someone perfect for one stage of your life, but he/she may not transfer to other stages: "Life had been so simple--dull, yes, but pleasantly so--before Miller. He'd opened up possibilities she hadn't known existed [. . .] How do I find my way back to my husband again?" (252). Though it was kind of dull that Kellie only has an emotional affair (possibly so no reader can be turned off by her), I do think it illustrates the power that thoughts can have. Kellie becomes so repulsed by her husband, only to see his annoying qualities as endearing when she thinks she may loose him. Granted, Jason's whole "stepping up" with a ridiculous limo/70s party and beginning to help more around the house when he suspects her of something is classic: Way to give her what she needs when she might be out the door, but you do have to feel for the guy to an extent. I didn't like that she left work though because she couldn't handle not flirting with a guy...
Gigi and her family (with sinister election-intern Zach) aren't really worth mentioning. Susan was tolerable in parts, especially because her son's day highlight involved a "silly book about a snorting pug dog that his teacher had read aloud" (132). I just wanted her to be more. Her stalking wasn't detailed and her forgiveness of Daphne for stealing her husband annoyed me. Sure, in real life, most people have to move on, but my characters are supposed to explore what regular people won't! As for Tess..the murder/pedophile scout master (I like how Pekkanen wouldn't let it be associated with Boy Scouts)/her worries over her kids belonged in a different book: one I wouldn't read because she was so nervous/dull that I didn't care for her plot at all.
I do think living in their area sounds fun, as does having female friends who are that supportive of one another. Perhaps that element is the most fictional one in the book.

I received a copy of this title from NetGalley. It does not impact my review.

Perfect Neighbors focuses on four women living in a small tight-knit community. From the outside their lives all seem pretty perfect, but behind closed doors things aren’t quite as wonderful. Kellie’s attractive new co-worker makes her notice all the flaws in her husband and maybe her little crush is getting out of hand. Susan is a successful business owner, but her divorce was full of betrayal and she’s still carrying around the bitterness, which her young son is beginning to notice. Gigi has a slightly out of control teenage daughter and her husband is running for congress – and her past is not quite as pristine as the campaign manager may hope. Tessa recently moved her family to the neighborhood to try and forget the mistakes of her past. Throughout the book we get each of their perspectives, as well as snippets of community-wide e-mails from the other residents of the neighborhood which really helped the story maintain a light-hearted tone when it threatened to get a little heavy.

The character development of this novel is superb! I really felt like I got to know and care about all the characters. There wasn’t even really one perspective I preferred to the others. They were all interesting, often compelling, and I had an emotional attachment to each of them. I also loved that they were all so different.

Where it lacked a little bit for me was the “secrets.” From the synopsis I was expecting a lot of intrigue and twists and surprises, but I didn’t really get any. Even Tessa’s secret is pretty obvious from the beginning, though the how is revealed slowly throughout the story and did a good job of still building some tension. Other than the setting and the friendship between the four main characters, there wasn’t anything that really tied their plot lines together.

Overall, The Perfect Neighbors was an enjoyable read. Though it lacked a little in terms of plot for me, the character development really makes up for it. I definitely wouldn’t mind reading more about these characters, who feel like friends. I would recommend this to fans of really character-driven novels.

Overall Rating (out of 5): 3.5 Stars

This was a really enjoyable book. It alternates between 4 women's lives in a small suburban street. Kellie has recently returned to work and is attracted to one of her new coworkers. She struggles with the pull between her marriage and family, and the excitement of a life outside of being a homemaker. Susan is gorgeous and successful, but is struggling with the end of her marriage and her ex-husband's new relationship. Gigi is the wife of an emerging politician, but she has a hard time connecting with her teenage daughter. Her husband's campaign picks up, and the toll it may take on her and her children make her wonder if it is worth it. Finally, Tessa is new to the neighborhood. She moved there with her family to escape a dark secret. Her story flashes back to "Before Newport Cove" as we learn more about what she is running from.

I would not categorize this as a psychological thriller, or even really as suspense. Though the story of Tessa unfolds throughout the novel, and you do wonder what she ran away from, it isn't particularly suspenseful. This book is really a story about four women who have their own demons, and struggle to hold their families together as they try to keep their secrets hidden. It delves into a lot of family issues that I think many women struggle with throughout their life.

This book is a quick read and enjoyable. It didn't have the same pull that some other books do for me. That said, I'm glad I read it. I may look into other books by this author at some point. It's a fun, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, look at suburbia.

This book was so entertaining and I really enjoyed it.
I especially liked the relationship between the characters. Sarah Pekkanen wrote the women so perfectly. They weren't judgmental or competitive or any of the negative things that usually are associated with a group of female friends. I loved how this book focused on friendship.

Women's Fiction | Domestic Drama

The Perfect Neighbors was the perfect read for me at this time. I needed something lighter, something that kept me invested in the characters lives, and something that didn’t take a toll on my emotions. I think many people will agree that reading has been difficult this past month because of everything happening in the world. I’ve heard from so many readers that are feeling the effects like I am. One thing I’ve been recommending is reading something outside your normal genre because it DOES take your mind off everything. Knowing that, I did the same and that’s where this book comes in. In all honesty, this has been sitting on my shelves for over a year now. I haven’t really been in the mood for it because I’ve been focusing all my time on romance books. However, this book REALLY helped me in overcoming the slump I’ve been in. As I mentioned it’s a lighthearted read, but it DOES have a little bit of mystery involved. It almost reminded me of Liane Moriarty’s books (The Husbands Secret & Big Little Lies). If you enjoyed those ones, I think you will LOVE this one. This one has cheeky humor, interesting characters that are each going through something that’s upsetting their lives, and a mysterious sidepiece that intersects with the plotline.

Now, what genre does this book fit into? I wouldn’t classify it as a mystery because the whole story doesn’t revolve around the secret. Would I classify it as domestic drama? I suppose it COULD fit into this category because there is indeed drama in these women’s lives and much of it surrounds family. What about women’s fiction? I think this is the PERFECT way to categorize it. Not only because it tells the story of 4 different women within the neighborhood, but because each woman is dealing and/or struggling with their own lives in way or another.

I’m not going to sit here and reiterate the entire plot for my review because there is so much going on in these women’s lives that it would take me forever to do so. Also, I don’t want to spoil the book because reading it without any preconceived notions makes the story even BETTER as things are revealed. I will say though that I really enjoyed it. I’ve read Pekkanen’s thrillers and loved those, and after reading her women’s fiction novels I can tell that I’m going to be a fan of whatever she writes. Therefore, I DO recommend this novel. I think if you have loved her recent thrillers, you’ll enjoy the softer side of her writing with her women’s fictions. Also, if you enjoy Liane Moriarty’s books you will certainly want to check this one out.

I was hoping to read this because it reminded me of The Desperate Housewives, but oh my goodness. It seemed like this book took forever to get to the point and everything happened in the end. I didn’t really enjoy it. It was a slow read for me. There was no plot twist or anything that kept me thinking. The book was boring in my opinion. I will most likely end up donating it to a used book store. I really tried to love this book.

First, I received The Perfect Neighbors from Netgalley.com, in exchange for an honest review.
Somehow, I missed Sarah Pekkanen's last book, Things You Won't Say (ordering right now!). How I have missed her style of writing! There isn't a thing I did not like about this book. The character development was great, and it made you feel like you wanted to be right there in the neighborhood with the characters. I found myself wanting to hang out with Susan, Gigi, Tessa, and Kellie. No spoilers in this review, pre-order this book now!!

Sarah Pekkanen has another bestseller on her hands!

Thank you netgalley.com for the ARC, this is another wonderful book by Sarah!!!

This was my first Sarah Pekkanen read and it was really good. She did a nice job highlighting how every marriage is different and you really don't know what happens behind closed doors. A relationship might look perfect to outsiders but actually isn't. There was a slow reveal on some of the issues with one that was kind of shocking. I really enjoyed this book and hope to read more by Sarah. Well worth the time.

I received this book as part of the Life of a Book Addict group.

I thought this was a great escapist book. A light read, but interesting enough. The neighbors each had a secret. Each kind of woman was represented.

The listserv discussions, which had nothing to do with the plot, were hilarious and truly reflected how those things go. Shaking my head as far as those things go! ;-)

Neighbors are defined as people that reside in the same neighborhood, mostly the same street as you. That doesn't mean that you know what's going on behind closed doors. Each family in this book, has inside issues that they are dealing with. It varies from divorce, flirting, possible political scandal & murder!

This book will entertain you with all its craziness. The people are just trying to live ordinary lives without the hassle of their own situations. A book that demonstrates life in the suburbs and their everyday drama.

Just upon reading the first few pages of The Perfect Neighbors immediately I began to conjure up images of Desperate Housewives (there's even a passing mention of the Delfino family!) meets Big Little Lies. Convinced I knew where this story was headed, I braced myself for soapy intrigue set against an otherwise idyllic backdrop. The theme had to be everything is perfect here...or is it?

While this prediction was not entirely untrue, I felt that The Perfect Neighbors didn't really live up to the level of intrigue I was hoping for. This story revolves around four main women who reside in the community: Kellie, who just returned to the work force, Gigi, whose husband is taking a stab at a political career, Susan, a successful businesswoman still bitter about her recent divorce, and Tessa, the new, mysterious resident of Newport Cove. All of the women (minus Tessa) have shared potluck dinners and carpool outings. When Tessa enters the mix, they are eager to add her to the fold, but also weary of this mysterious woman who seems like she has something to hide.

The Perfect Neighbors fell flat in a few key areas. First off, there's the women's friendship. I don't think this novel's success was predicated on the relationship between these women, however, since their lives obviously overlapped, I wanted to see even more intertwining. I wanted them to either be there for each other or be at each other's throats. Instead, the characters all came across like ships in the night. Sure, they worried about each other from time to time, crossing paths and knowing glances at random functions. But nothing meaningful or no real bonding ever came from their friendship. It had me wondering why we needed them to be "friends" at all.

Then we have the individual stories of each woman. To be blunt, none of them were meaty enough for me. Okay, so Susan's husband left her for a woman she thought was her friend. If this had happened in the story itself perhaps it would have seemed more scandalous. But we're introduced to Susan in the aftermath of this occurrence. Susan's story is all about how to move on. I know this is important, but it's not exactly riveting.

Next up we have Gigi who is stressed at trying to exude the perfect suburban lifestyle as the wife of a potential politician. But Gigi's got a brooding teen at home and she's harboring a few secrets in her own past that need addressing. Gigi's past seemed a bit random. Howver, I think I would have liked this story more had Gigi spoken to her daughter about her past. It was mentioned that Gigi thought about it at one point, but the follow through never happened.

Finally though, we have my two least favorite women of the pack, Kellie, who, although married, his seriously flirting (and crushing) on her co-worker and Tessa, the new resident with the deep, dark secret. Kellie irked me because it was clear she wanted more to happen with her co-worker all along. It seemed like she only told her husband out of fear of being found out, which was supposed to have turned into genuine remorse. I suppose things could have happened that way, but I didn't like how Kellie's character was painted and wasn't sure she deserved to be forgiven so easily.

Which brings me to Tessa. I guessed Tessa's big secret pretty early on, but hoped I was wrong. I mean her reveal was a juicy one but hello...Tessa's husband KILLED. A. MAN. and got away with it! We never really even learned all the facts there. Did the guy do anything to these kids or did he just possess the pictures? Don't get me wrong, either is creepy, but murder? Really? Why didn't they just report the guy to the cops like normal people and get the creep out of their lives?

All in all as I reread through this review I realize this book made me angrier than I realized. To end on a positive, the one thing about the story that made me chuckle were the listserv blurbs in the beginning of each chapter. Again, the book earned interest, but I'm not sure it entirely earned my respect.

For full review - The Limit of Books Does Not Exist

I was surprised to read the acknowledgements at the end of the book and see Greer Hendricks name. After some research, I figured out that Henricks and Sarah Pekkanen co-wrote The Wife Between Us which I had enjoyed reading earlier this year.

The Perfect Neighbors focuses on 4 women. Kellie is going back to work after many years of being a stay at home mother. She has to adjust to high heels as well as not having her family as the main focus point in her life. Susan is a successful businesswoman and mother. She seems to have it all together, but little does everyone know that she is just hanging on. Gigi‘s husband is running for Congress and her family is forced into the spotlight. Tessa has just moved into the neighbourhood and the reason why her family moved is a mystery that she doesn’t want to talk about.

I love a good drama and The Perfect Neighbours didn’t disappoint. I was quickly hooked on the storylines of all 4 women and was eager to learn their secrets. I loved how the author wrote the friendships between the women. There wasn’t any competition between the women and no competition between the children. There was just respect and compassion between the women and you can easily support their friendship.

There was hints of mystery throughout the novel, with the biggest mystery being, why did Tessa and her family move? I think it was done perfectly. The draw out wasn’t too long or too suspenseful and the reason why wasn’t a let down at the end and it was surprising!

Can't wait to read more by Sarah Pekkanen. Recommendations are welcome!
