Alexander Strange has an unusual guardian angel -- she's the one who needs protection.
Not enough that he's typing his fingers to the bone covering resurrected triceratops maurading in Miami or that he's on a quest to find a headless baby Jesus snatched from a Florida megachurch and golf resort.
Now his shipboard mannequin is channeling a woman from the future. Her Fly immediately to Portugal, do not stop for Cuba Libres, and save your girlfriend's life or your guardian angel will also cease to exist.
It's weird, but that's Alexander Strange's everyday nine-to-five as America's only full-time reporter covering news of the weird. Though even he doesn't anticipate that his converted fishing trawler will soon be home to multiple seances, that a mad scientist will try to blow him up, or that the Elvis impersonator he's hired for his wedding will ghost him. And his future in-laws? Now there's a real nightmare.
Strange Timing is the most fun thing I have read all year. No wonder the Florida Writers Association named it Book of the Year in its annual Royal Palm Literary Awards. J.C Bruce manages to reveal Florida in all its glorious weirdness, and then enhances that weirdness with some fascinating Sci-fi slight-of-hand that’s also pure Florida. The characters are great, the settings are rich, and the who-done-it plot full of OMG.
I don’t know how this author didn’t show up on my radar sooner. I love Dave Barry, Carl Hiaasen, and Tim Dorsey, and J.C. Bruce is definitely in that league of heavy-hotter Florida Man writers. This novel is clever and laugh-out-loud funny. Looking forward to reading his other books featuring Alexander Strange.
