After one screw up too many, Esmeralda Barnes is shipped off to Seattle to start her first semester of college while living under the strict guardianship of her great aunt. She’s prepared to serve her time in simmering silence when she meets Charlie Campbell, the only person worth talking to at the tiny community college she’s being forced to attend. His efforts to scare her away don’t work, not even when he lets it slip that he has a psychic twin sister who helps their uncle—a police detective—solve murders. As the former member of a gang, Esmer’s confident she’s tough enough to take anything he throws at her in stride.

Then she has a near death experience. And Charlie is the first person on the scene. It turns out, his sister isn’t psychic but she does have a special connection to Death. She and Charlie both.So maybe this friendship will take a little more work than Esmer originally thought. But hey, it’s better than the gang. Even after being pulled into a string of grisly murder investigations, running with people possessing supernatural abilities, and dealing with the very real presence of a minor goddess, Esmer’s pretty sure hanging with Charlie is better than being back with the gang. Yep, pretty damn sure.

I really enjoyed this book; a perfectly even mix of romance, crime, and fantasy. The characters were believable and likeable, even the ones who needed to grow on me a little as they started off mean! Jasmine was definitely my favourite, the way she managed to stay sweet throughout her torturous circumstances was incredibly impressive. Dinah was a close second though. The side plots were interesting and varied, and gradually became part of the main plot. I enjoyed the flashback portions, as they gave the book variety and fleshed out the backstory for multiple characters. The ending was unexpected but extremely satisfying!

Omg!!

I was a little confused by the diary entries to begin with and then the storyline from the characters, but the more I read, the more I understood what was happening and fell in love with this book. So much so, I couldn't put it down!!

The characters were all amazing and I love Aunt Dinah! There's no damsel in distress in this story, but there's definitely heroes galore!!

If you're considering reading this, I highly recommend it. Lock yourself away in a room and get pulled into the story.

I can't believe what Jasmine and didn't see it coming. Don't want to say too much and spoil it for others!!

This is a very different kind of book that my usual paranormal expectations. Getting herself a little too close to trouble too often, Esmeralda Barnes is sent to Seattle for her first semester of college under the watchful eyes of her great aunt. She meets Charlie Campbell and he tries to scare her off but it doesn’t work. Compared to the gangs back home, this is still an improvement.

But a near-death experience brings Charlie first on scene. Both he and his sister have a special connection to Death. But Esmer won’t give up on him. She’ll just have to work harder to be friends. Will he open up and tell her everything?

I enjoyed this book with its well-paced story line and likable characters. Some surprises along the way keep the book interesting.

Charlie and Jasmine live in the basement of the police precinct. Their uncle is a detective there. Jasmine dies whenever someone dies in her close proximity. She feels their pain and just how they died. Then she lives again. Charlie has visions. Lady Death is playing games with them after their parents made a deal with Death to save their lives when they were born. This is no life for these young people. What an utterly brilliant story. I just could not put it down.
