Even the strongest of vampires has a breaking point: for Marcelle, it was being tortured by a witch in New York and trying to return to her regular existence as if nothing had happened.
She has too much to do to allow herself to focus on something as trivial as trauma. Occult hunters accost her witch allies; an aggravating pyromancer needles a fiery thorn in her side; and the coronation of one of her lovers, the vampire crown prince of New Ulster, Setanta, has her full attention. Not only that, but her newest lover, the necromancer and healing witch Sarai, has trials of her own to face and a reckoning to come with her formal introduction to the vampire royal court at the Midnight Festival. Marcelle and her lovers must face the demons of the past and future, or she may lose the new love desperately needs.

Second instalment of Evelyn Silver's paranormal LGBTQIA+ polyamorous enemies to lovers romance.

This book is amazing. With a strong fmc, strong mmc and subservient fmc.

The storyline/plot is great and with a bucket load of world building.

There are various types of paranormal characters, with our main 3 being Vampires and a witch.

The end hints at a 3rd instalment and honestly I'm here for it.

Evelyn is a new author to me and her writing skills and imagination are impeccable.

I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

⭐️ This honest review was given in exchange for an ARC of the book from the author herself.

This book was quite the exciting ride to read. Even though I hadn’t read the first book in this series, it was still very easy for me to catch up with all the ongoing plots and subplots here in Book #2. I really liked how strong the worldbuilding is in this series. The vampire, witch, and magic-hunter societies each have their own different sets of rules among themselves and interacting with each other. I also enjoyed reading about how these magical societies work internationally as well as in different parts of the US. The author has a lot of passion and excitement about this storyline and all her characters, and it shows. I would recommend this book to any fans of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” looking for a series with similar amounts of humor, drama, action, and romance.

The second novel in the Bloodline Chronicles series continues the battle between Hunter Humans and our paranormal heroes and is hotter than ever. While Book 1 showcased Silver’s impeccable world-building and page-turning plots, Midnight Fear leans into one of my favorite tropes in paranormal romance – vampire politics. This book had all the action of book 1 except the combatants were firing insults instead of arrows.

I was over-the-moon excited to see Sarai (the witch) as our main heroine again. I love her humor and outlook on life. She fell in love with the warrior vampiress, Marcelle, in book 1 but we see their relationship develop in Midnight Fear—add Marcelle’s royal lover, Setana, and the spice flies out of the cabinet. I loved the throuple representation as more than a queer ‘why choose’ book but demonstrating a loving, devoted, relationship between three beings. Throughout the book, all three partnerships within the throuple are nurtured, in multiple love languages.

Setana’s coronation is the centerpiece for the plot where we are introduced to the intricacies of vampire society and the factions within the royal court at the Midnight Festival. I loved seeing this through Sarai’s eyes when she is formally introduced because of her down-to-earth take on the players as well as Silver’s suburb world-building. I felt like I was at the festival.

My favorite character was Setana’s stepmother. She’s the type of multi-dimensional villain I love to hate, and gave me Snow White vibes without the poison apple. Her foil is Liora, the ghostly guardian of Sarai. I loved how we learned more about Liora through her helping Sarai avoid death at the hands of the Queen Regent of the Ulster Vampires.

With her back against the wall, Marcelle must battle her demons or lose the love she craves more than blood. Midnight Fear is book two in this deliciously decadent steamy paranormal romance series, and it’s even better than book one. It’s seductive with hotter than hot bedroom scenes. The world-building is flawless. The descriptive narration details every scene. The erotic romance between three lovers will singe your fingertips.

Let’s talk about the characters. After what happened in book one, there’s an ocean between Marcelle and Sarai. Marcelle has to work through her issues, some complex, some basic. But she’s a vampire and what’s better than a little violence to cleanse the mind. I love Marcelle. She’s a strong, powerful vampire. She cares deeply for Sarai as well as for her vampire prince, Setanta.

The triangle dynamic is not your typical love triangle. It’s more of a lovers’ circle. It works for me because you’re talking about two very powerful vampires and a witch.

The world-building is immense. Evelyn Silver takes great care building her world. It’s immersive and complex yet easy to believe.

The writing is what makes this book impossible to put down. The story seduces the reader and puts them under its spell. I can’t wait for more!

This is so far the best book in the series. With far more action, it shows us the world of the vampires and its inner workings. Very excited for the third installment in Silver's series.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

Thi is book 2 in the Bloodline Chronicles, and it cannot be read as a stand alone. You NEED to read Witch's Knight before this one, to get the full story, much is not recapped and you will need it all.

I loved this one, more so than Witch's Knight, because it took a turn I did NOT see coming and it kinda threw me for a loop, in the best way. And there is one niggle at the back of my mind I need to talk about.

Marcelle is NOT fine, at all. After being tortured in the first book, she really is suffering emotionally, and it takes a session with Setanta, in which she does something that she never did before, to make her see that she needs help. Sarai makes her see too, and it's the love Marcelle has for Sarai that tips her over the edge and she gets some help.

Setanta plays a huge part here, but we don't hear very much from him. And I missed him at key points along the way. Hearing MORE from him would have, probably, negated my niggle, but that is not my niggle. I'll come back to that.

It's dark and deadly, steamy and smexy! Oh so smexy, and I did not, never in a million years, see that coming at me! It really threw me, and I wasn't sure it was gonna work, but boy, oh boy, does it ever! And when Sarai gets to meet some of her mother's family, THAT surprise too, what was said then, I did not see coming and I loved that this book surprised me at every turn.

So, my niggle?? This is billed as the conclusion to the duet of books. BUT I feel it's unfinished. I found the ending kinda rushed, and while Sarai, Marcelle and Setanta are happy for now, I wouldn't give them a happy ever after. They need another book, to tell what happens when Giovanni gets her comeuppance, along with Sarai's sister, when she wakes. There is much unfinished and I need it, Goddammit!!

So, because of the unfinished feeling, I gave this book...

4 very VERY VERY good stars

Impressive! impeccable!Superb!
The perfect balance between the two books has fully been revealed. While the first book was focused on world building, so we can fully understand the dynamic of the plot development with just a sprinkle of spice and building up the hints for the next installment, the second book delivered a full blown unfolding of the relationships between the three main characters. I am always thrilled to read bisexual representation when both sides of the characters are fully seen on page, not only the FF, MM or FM ones and one staying in a shadow. And what is even better is that the world building wasn't forgotten and pushed into a corner. It's hard to say "I love you" and be vulnerable, but both of our heroines jumped through the loops of the challenge beautifully and it reached the next stage where we have the male involved as well. So I got to see the open polyamory setting in its entirety as well as the hints for the 3rd book. Breathtaking choices, sacrifices, the bitter taste of losing a friend, the elation of a hard won victory and even the terrifying lengths Envy could reach, were all skillfully woven in the very fabric of the plot, pulsing with intensity and emotional density.
What I really appreciate about this story was the dark realism staying true to itself - you lose a limb, that's it; you die - you stay dead; you suffer - it's in details. The reader is able to live through every page not just see the gritty parts in recap or memory recollection
