Having a difficult pregnancy shatters more than one dream for a young woman who refuses to settle.
While college-aged Sammy Lock is on spring break, she finally gets a chance with her childhood crush, Davis Turner. But things take an unexpected turn when she finds out she’s pregnant, and the dream to work to build a life with each other looks impossible when Davis hightails it back to Seattle after the trip. To avoid her mother’s regrets, Sammy decides to put the baby up for adoption. But first she needs to tell Davis the truth so he’ll sign off on the papers.
Davis, however, wonders if he can learn to be a good partner, despite his past. Can friends grow together as a family in order to make the most important decision of their lives?
Learning to build a support system during depression proves vital in this first-in-series romance that will leave readers believing in love’s possibilities—despite the toughest realities.
I LOVED this book! I actually give it a 4.5! I seem to be drawn to books where the FMC’s mother is worthless, and this book is no different. It’s such a good story! If you like found family, found friends, a little romance, a strong FMC, and just a good story all around….. you oh will LOVE this book! I am soooo excited to read more by this Author!
Imagine finally hooking up with someone you’ve had a crush on since you were a child. Then that hook-up results in a surprise pregnancy, and you two aren’t together anymore and you have to find a way to tell him that he is going to be a father. Sammy the FMC had a horrible childhood at her mother’s expense and she is terrified of the outcome of her pregnancy. She doesn’t want to end up like her mom. Her best friend talk her into going and telling David the MMC and the baby’s father, which was a tough decision for her to do. She had all her options running through her mind on how to handle her situation. She ends up going and telling him, she’s pregnant and to sign some papers, when complications arise from her pregnancy. Has she made the right decision and has she found her forever love? You will have to read this book to find out! I really enjoyed this story and the way Shannon wrote it, you feel like you’re actually part of the story along with all the emotions that come with it!
Broken Luck was such an emotional story of friends to lovers, family trauma, accidental pregnancy and he falls first.
The story involves Sammy a grad student plugging away to finish her degree in forensics and her friend Carla who tries to get Sammy to do something other than study.
She does and meets Davis and they have a two week spring break fling and then Sammy realizes Davis is still involved with another girl.
Fast forward to Sammy being pregnant and so much happens from there! The story is poignant at times and I loved the group of friends that were so giving, the bond amazing.
This book has times of happiness, love and even sadness and despair but to watch a young love blossom despite the trials and tribulations was beautiful!
But y’all this book. I’ve never read anything like it…
If you are fan Dawson Creek, One Tree Hill, 7th Heaven, Everwood vibes….. this book will be right up your alley….
But TRIGGER WARNING if you have PTSD or issues with pregnancy trope and one that goes in extreme depth of very serious issues of not an easy pregnancy this book may be hard one to read…
But this will book will give you all the feelings, happy, sad, frustration, giggles, screaming at characters… this real make you realize that your life may be broken at times, you just have to be strong enough to get through those hard times, and to remember it’s okay to lean on people for help.. sometimes you just have to let go and lean on others.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved all the characters. I was invested from page one! I highly recommend this book and I will definitely be reading the textbook from this author. It was such an adorable romance book like none I’ve ever ever read before.
This was such a cute contemporary romance where we are following the main character Sammy as she reconnects with a high school crush during a college spring break. One thing leads to another, and they had a lot of fun during that spring break, things let loose if you catch my drift. Unfortunately, the end of the spring break results in the two separating ways, not communicating for awhile and when life goes back to normal, she finds out she is pregnant.
There are many complications that arise throughout the journey ranging from health issues to drama in various relationships. My heart went out to the main female character several times as she went through some pretty tough times throughout the book.
The plot is easy to follow, the characters are interesting, there is a little spice but nothing too over the top. The friendships in this book are chef’s kiss. I wish that I had friends like them in my real life.
The last chapter and epilogue had me barely able to breathe. This gets a 4 star from me!
Super cute debut novel! Coming from someone who normally is not the biggest fan of books with the surprise pregnancy trope, I was pleasantly surprised! I love how the book focuses so much on how the FMC’s friends band together to support her during a super difficult pregnancy. The found family vibes were everything. The book left me wanting more of all of the characters!
🌶️.5 (1.5) spice in my opinion but it was perfect for Sammy and Davis’s story
What a book! I could not put it down!
This is a very fast paced attention grabbing book! No detail is spared throughout, the characters in this book each have their own unique characteristics and you can really picture each of them and how they would look based on their personality.
I love how the author didn’t make this a love story like your typical romance. There were twists and turns where you weren’t quite sure what would happen next. The twist at the end had me sobbing in my car!
At the beginning of the book it seemed a little too fast paced with character POV switch between the FMC and MMC which I had never read before. Initially I wasn’t sure how I would get through the book with that style of switch. But in all honesty it was a breath of fresh air to not have to wait for what the next one was thinking! It was intertwined beautifully and kept me on the edge of my seat!
Shannon wrote a beautiful, heartwarming and heartbreaking book which took my emotions into different directions.
Sammy was a college student who had her life completely turned around. She always had sadness in her life but the life she planned would forever be changed. Her best friend and newly found family helped her through the worst days of her life. My heart ached for Sammy as she endured so much pain.
I was so invested in this book as Shannon’s creativity continued with each chapter. Her ability to completely draw you into the book was astonishing. It is proven that this book was written with an abundance of love and compassion.
Shannon is now an author on my auto read list. I was extremely impressed with the way she was able to quickly capture my heart with her beautiful words.
Super cute romance story that reminded me of Helen Hoang’s Kiss Quotient series. The relationship between the main characters was not your typical boy meets girl scenario that is so often played out in romance novels. I especially liked the ending. A great first novel!
i wanted to like it so bad. i’m a local and loved the thought and gave it a chance. a lot of it sounded so unreal and like ai almost? people don’t actually talk like that. and i could not get over the typos and inconsistency in it! did you not proof read at all?! so many words where a v was in a spot where a space needed to go. she called camille carmen at one point?? wtf is that? and there was a spot where she started talking as sammy but ended as davis?? and the football talk! as an huge football fan, that is not how hardly anyone talks about football. it was so generic and just like thrown in. i’m also not a fan of the third person.
i loved the plot and felt like there was so much potential but it was just a miss. makes me sad 😓
A great read! The relationships of the core characters, both romantic and platonic, are sweet and draw you into the story. The descriptions of the familiar PNW places are delightful! A well paced story that makes you want to keep reading!
Super cute love story ! You learn to love hate characters. You watch them grow into themselves in the book. Friends are amazing when you find your correct tribe! Loved this
Broken Luck was a beautifully written contemporary romance that will have you not only falling in love with the two main characters but also with their whole found family!
When Sammy has a chance encounter with a former crush from high school, neither she nor Davis are prepared for what comes next! One whirlwind spring break relationship ensues ending abruptly when the break comes to a close.
Life returns to normal until Sammy discovers that she is pregnant. Hurt by how the relationship ended and disillusioned by a lifetime of poor parenting by her own mother, Sammy makes the decision that she will have to go it alone. It soon becomes clear that this pregnancy will be anything than normal and Sammy will need all the help she can get.
Encouraged by her friend Carla, Sammy decides she must share this news with Davis. What happens next is an absolute rollercoaster ride of emotions, in only the very best way!
Sammy and davis reunited together on the spring break and the two were immediately infatuated with each other❤️ .. sammy has had a huge crush on davis in high school and he was also secretly attracted to her 🙈.. they had a "fling" together and davis was falling for sammy hard and fast .. but he may have been keeping a secret from her .. he was still "kinda" involved with his high school girlfriend chamille .. they have a toxic relationship as chamille was an expert at twisting everyones word to mold it into exactly what she wanted it to be .. davis was trying to break up with her several times but she just wasn’t having it .. i really despised her .. at the end of spring break and while davis , summy along with their other friends carla , andy and adam were in the bar having a pool competition, chamille appears suddenly and you can imagine summy’s heartbreak when she discovers she’s been lied to 💔 davis really got on my nerves there , he was frozen and didn’t say anything to sammy and the two just went their separate ways 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ Summy’s suffering didn’t just end there though as she found out that she is pregnant a few weeks later … and especially as she was neglected by her own mother and has set her mind on becoming nothing like her and just focusing on her carrier and finishing her degree in forensics .. the fact that she has a very high-risk pregnancy didn’t help either.. and that’s when the actual journey began ..
i loove the growth in character and the found family trope .. my heart really broke for sammy several times throughout the book 💔and i love how strong she was 🥹… her relationship with davis was not easy and the two had a few challenges to overcome.. they had a lot to learn throughout their journey and i was all in for it .. seeing their love blossom between all the heartbreak, sadness and forgiveness is wholesome 🩷 i fell in love with the group of friends but especially adam who is originally davis’s bff but who was soo supportive and protective of sammy too .. their friendship is goals and i loved every moment of it 🫠.. loove Shannon ‘s writing style , it sucked me in the story and i didn’t want to put the book down 🩷
Broken Luck is book one in Shannon Morse's Pacific North West series. Book one, while a cute story, is a book that deals with several sensitive topics, some of which a few readers might find difficult to handle, though Ms. Morse handles them with all the grace and sensitivity they deserve.
Broken Luck discusses topics such as adultery, unplanned pregnancy, unwanted pregnancy, high risk pregnancy, adoption, child abandonment, and rape just to name a few. And while Ms. Morseis clear in the topics, making the readers feel every emotion the lead female character is feeling, she does not go in great detail about them, keeping the gory details away.
Readers who are looking for a fun, feel good book, would do good to give Broken Luck a try. Even with all the seriousness, Broken Luck has a lightheartedness that will make readers want to re-read this book time and again as they fall in love with the characters over and over.
Davis and Sammy's story was a wild ride from start to finish. From Sammy keeping the pregnancy a secret to the traumatic journey Sammy has to face the entire book. Yes, the story was cute, but the 3rd person PoV was not for me. Over all I gave this book a 3 star and a bell pepper for the spice.
Blurb A Surprise Pregnancy with complications has life-changing consequences for a determined young woman who refuses to repeat her mother's regrets-even for a childhood crush.
While on spring break, ambitious college student Sammy Lock figures no one better to let loose with than her dreamy childhood crush, Davis Turner. But after the break, he returns to his world-and Sammy discovers she's pregnant.
Petrified of ending up like her mom, who resents giving up her dreams for motherhood, Sammy decides to put the baby up for adoption. The only problem? She needs Davis to sign off on the papers. But Davis has other plans, and despite the mistakes they've both made, he tries to prove that what's better than running from their new reality is staying together and building a life.
But is that possible?
This first-in-series romance proves how far love can go despite life's biggest unknowns.
My Thoughts: This was cute romance! Good banter between the MCs and the side characters. I laughed. I yelled at MMC a lot (insert eye roll here) but everything came together nicely
But wait………
And then I was shookith and had to put the book down and find tissues for my issues! UGH and I proceeded to wipe at tears thru half of the epilogue while laughing too! HOW DARE YOU SCARE ME LIKE THAT SHANNON! UGH I’m still not ok
Broken Luck by Shannon Morse is the first book I’m reading by this author and oh my what an amazing read it was! I absolutely loved this book; it had everything I could have wanted from it. What originally drew me to the book was a video that the author posted then I went and found out what the book was about. Needless to say I knew I had to have it in my life. I read this book in a day, I could not put it down. It hooked me within the first few chapters and kept my attention all the way until the end. I adored the storytelling and how the plot held steady throughout… there wasn’t a single lull for me. The descriptions were perfect and I was able to imagine everything in great detail. What I truly loved was the characters… how realistic and relatable they all were. I loved how friends and family were there when things were rough. I’m all about the support. This book was truly a great read that had a cute romance and some well done spice. Consider me a fan of Shannon Morse and I can’t wait for more books by this author. I highly recommend this book; it was s fantastic read.
After closing the book after reading the very last word, this book instantly became one of my top 3 favorite reads of All Time. I was immersed in the story from the first page and felt every emotion the main character, Sammy, was feeling. I felt a connection to her. I think it was because we’ve all had that high school crush we dreamt about one day getting the chance to kiss (or more ;)), and having it work out! Sammy’s story definitely had some turns to it. But you could feel the connection between her and her crush, Davis. I just loved him. Yes, there were times when I wanted to slap him in the face and tell him to grow a pair. This book gave me all the feels and was the first book in a long time where I didn’t want the story to end. If there was a way to give this book a million stars I would. The writing is so captivating and draws you in to where you’re watching this young adult dramedy play out in your head. Broken Luck is a book I’ve already recommended to friends and will be a book I continue to recommend forever!
This is Shannon Morse first book and for a debut novel it is so impressive. The writing is very well done! This was a great, emotional story of an accidental pregnancy with so much trauma and problems along the way. I love the way it all came together! There is a moment before the end that I thought it was gonna end differently and I was gonna be so mad 🤣This isn’t normally the genre I would read, but I’m so glad I picked up this book! I will definitely be looking to read the next one! I will say if you don’t like reading pregnant central and you don’t like reading hard pregnancy tropes maybe skip this one if that doesn’t bug you I would definitely give a read!!!
"I guess there really isn't a perfect couple, just imperfect people that found each other."
This book... I'm speechless. It definitely brought on some tears for me. It felt so real because so much of the pregnancy in this journey played from the fears I had with my boys. I'm trying to still get my thoughts together after this, but I am still highly recommending!
I want to thank Shannon for allowing me to read her book. It was so cute, and I want more of their story because of how it ends! I adore Shannon's writing style and think that's what helped keep me intrigued.
A college spring break fling becomes a life-altering event when the MFC becomes pregnant. She gets very sick throughout her pregnancy, and the way her friends and boyfriend support and rally around her is remarkable. The way the characters navigate their careers and care for Sammy also makes the story great. I loved this book from the beginning to the end and am so glad that this love story wasn't the cliche that you often see portrayed in books.
This book takes the reader through a roller coaster of emotions. Two college age souls drawn together and through some missteps loose each other for a time. Yes the MMC will frustrate you by not being honest with the FMC. He is in another controlling toxic relationship he doesn't have the courage to end thereby hurting those around him. The FMC has been severely hurt by those who should love her the most and trust is hard for her. An unplanned pregnancy, tough choices and medical issues complicate everything. Your emotional rollercoaster awaits but what a ride.
An amazing book! A must read! I absolutely loved every bit of this book! It set up the characters and background. At the end there is a HUGE twist which had me balling but ended with a happily ever after! I cannot wait to read the second book in this series! For the author’s debut novel it was absolutely perfect in every way!
I was not paid for this review and it is my honest review. I cannot wait to read the second book in the second book! Perfectò!
This was a great, emotional story of an accidental pregnancy with a lot of trauma and problems along the way. I love the way it all came together! This isn’t normally the genre I would read, but I’m so glad I picked up this book! I will definitely be looking to read the next one! Definitely recommend!
As a reader of other types of stories, this was my first experience reading this author's work. I enjoyed the local flavor of this college romance. It was a quick and light read for the warm weather by the pool.
This author's writing style is wonderfully impressive for her first published book. I felt myself curiously wanting to know how the MFC would navigate through different situations in this story.
