Emily Chase’s children’s book “Our Roommate is Missing” is volume 2 in a five volume book series called “The Girls of Canby Hall.” This volume 2 book was released by Scholastic Inc in 1988. The novel is about the mysterious disappearance of Michelle Hyde (nicknamed Shelley) who is a boarding school roommate of Dana Morrison and Faith Thompson. These three roommates have a close friendship with Casey Flint. Casey's parents own an art gallery that was recently raided by a team of art thieves. Court hearings about the thievery were scheduled; and Casey’s’ father Jason was summoned to testify at the hearings. The novel also discusses events leading to the kidnapping of Casey’s 15 year old schoolmate Shelley; and the techniques that Dana and Faith use to find their missing friend. These techniques feature a board game (“I Love My Love”) that Shelley used to cleverly communicate her location on a phone call arranged by her captives to Jason Flint. An amazing number of interrelated events allow the friendship and police to find Shelley, recover Jason’s stolen art, and capture the criminal kidnapping perpetrators. At the behest of Jason Flint, the FBI became involved in the investigation and they were amazed how Dana, her boyfriend Bret, and Faith were able to work with local police to locate and free Shelley from her captives, The FBI was also amazed about how the roommates and boyfriend Bret were able to use board game spelling techniques to recover the valuable stolen art for the Flint family. The book storylines are very captivating, and full of surprises. Emily Chase’s’ children’s novel is wonderful!. (P)

This is the one where Shelley loses weight!
The "chubby" one has become "astonishingly thin" and she just had to get kidnapped! For a week!
So grateful they kept us up to date with her weight loss throughout.

I spent my hard earned babysitting money on these, back in the early eighties.
I can't imagine that anyone who didn't read them back then would like them now.

It doesn't take long for things to start happening. Emily is missing right from the start. It turns out she has been kidnapped in an effort to stop someone from testifying at an upcoming trial. The problem is that the kidnappers got the wrong girl. The trial involves some kind of stolen paintings scam.

Shelly has to go through a lot and is poorly treated by the kidnappers. Faith, Dana and Bret go to rescue her but things don't go well right from the beginning. It's possible that two of the three girls could end up dead.

Almost as bad, to me, as the kidnapping is the official decision to keep everything that has happened a secret so as to not hurt the reputation of the school. The 'let's sweep it under the rug' approach to reality which is really a disservice to the girls who are attending a school where knowledge and truth are both to be revered. Still, it's a very good second book in the series.

One of my favorite series every when I was a kid. Quick and easy to read, even when I was 10 years old. The series is the story of 3 girls in an all girl boarding school and how they become friends and get through life and all of the bumps along the way.

I remember borrowing these from a friend in junior high. The notion of going to boarding school seemed so alien, and wealthy . . .

The only reason I picked this book up was because I got it at a free book sale.I didn't think it was that bad and I might read more if I ever find another book in the series.
