There are two major things going on in this book. Shelley Hyde, from the last graduating class and who lived in Room 407 where Andy, Toby and Jane now live, comes back. She'll be acting in a play nearby. Although she does well the play is terrible and is quickly closed. The rest of the book Shelley is basically not dealing with that well at all.

What happens to Andy is the second major theme in the book as she feels she is facing the permanent end of her dancing career and, like Shelley, is trying to deal with that with very little success.

Not everyone is pleased with how Shelley reacts to what happens, either, and that proves interesting in itself.
