Consort of Darkness

Rate this book
Before the age of gods and men, the most ancient of the immortals, Nyx, pulled herself into creation. Her power encapsulated the night and all its secrets — where nothing goes unseen. Once respected for the balance and duality that she brought to the world, and the haven she created in Tartarus, the rise of the gods has brought the Goddess of Night’s influence into question.

Beside her, Erebus, the God of Darkness, grows restless. The primordial God has spent thousands of years amplifying Nyx and the powers of the night, acting as the final knell to her command. He has watched their children — Thanatos, Hypnos, and Chiron — usher the souls of mankind through life and threatens to blanket the world in darkness when his family’s reputations begin to tarnish.

Power hungry, a young Zeus lurks in the daylight, creating a cult of perception. He hatches a plan to take the throne from his father, Kronos, and bring down anyone who has the strength to defy him... primordials included. As Nyx and Erebus are divided on different sides of the struggle, their relationship is tested as well as the balance of night and day itself.

dnf at 26%.

until this point, all i read was nyx whining about how the gods are being chads and doing chad like behaviour, and how erebus is debating becoming a chad (she didnt want him to be a chad because that would imply that he wasnt supporting her) and there’s just too much frat boy energy and i didnt like it sorry :(

btw MOLLY I LOVE UR TIKTOK UR FUCKING HILARIOUS

“Do you think we should tell Zeus what happened in here or let him figure it out?”

I am always shocked when an author can make me fall in love with a character or characters so soon into a story. Yes I know the generally story of Nyx and Erebus but not in a huge level of detail. Given the deep love I felt immediately for these two also meant that my heart was broken (for the first time) very quickly into the story. Not in a bad way. I live to feel this fictional pain.

Not only is the depiction of Nyx and Erebus refreshing (Erebus’ playfulness will have you swooning right out of the gate) but the development of some of our other favourite characters is new and enchanting.

Hecate (O Terrifying One) - the initial description of the Goddess of Witchcraft is, by far, the best I’ve ever read and immediately had been obsessing over this version (I cannot wait for her book!)

Hermes - just you wait for your own feelings on our favourite trickster.

Zeus - dickhead. But a new level of dickhead you’re probably not prepared for.

Hades & Poseidon - Well. The brotherly banter is in full force but I didn’t expect that to be laced with a bit of old lady crankiness and I tell you what… I AM HERE FOR IT!

I absolutely relished in the elegance and humour of this world and story. My heart broke, multiple times, but I also laughed, a lot. And can we please bow down to the masterpiece that is chapter 38?!?!

I devoured this in less than 24 hours and am itching for book 2.

Now, for my usual brain dump/notes (which may contain slight spoilers):

Best description of Hecate I’ve ever read
Heart is already breaking at 7%
Refreshing to follow a relationship with history (I.e. they’ve been together for a long time)
Erebus 🥵🥵🥵🥵
Love that Nyx is all powerful but happily dominated by Erebus in bed. This is my favourite trope.
Nyx’s self doubt 🥺🥺
Of course Zeus manspreads
Erebus’ playfulness
Powerful man behind an even more powerful woman.
So refreshing seeing Hades scared
Hermes is a fucking treat
I just want to hang out in Hecates kitchen
Hades and Poseidon - Legolas and Gimli vibes
Chapter 38 🤤

everything was freaking amazing
i was stunned to find that this was molly tullis’ book
i’ve mostly seen her on booktok
and well i think its suffice to say that our girl did not disappoint

i absolutely loved the dynamic between nyx and erebrus
the fact that the only problem in their marriage was the fact that erebrus wanted everyone to respect his goddess and acknowledge what she did for them while nyx just didn’t give a shit about anyone’s opinion but erebrus was everything

Erebus’s heart was being caved in two as he thought about each moment that he was spending apart from the Night. He wanted her to be respected, worshipped. Even if she didn’t care about that, he needed the whole world to see what she brought to them.

“Humans are afraid of the darkness now.” Erebus shrugged. “It does not bother me. It pushes me to the end of my wits when I hear how they are afraid of our children or how they don’t respect you—”
“You respect me,” Nyx cut him off, grabbing hold of his face with her hands. “That is all I need.”
“Don’t you understand? You are all I need. Please don’t make me lose you to chase the adoration of gods.”
She spit the last word out like a poison. Erebus stared at her with shock, until his hand came up and grabbed the back of Nyx’s head. He pulled them together, the kiss untamed from the very start, causing Nyx’s body to curl into him on instinct. When they finally broke apart, he nodded.
“You are all I need, in this life and the next, through time immemorial. When immortals die and humans live forever, when we are all swallowed up by hells even unknown to us, we’ll always be there in the darkness, Nyx, and that is all I need or could ever want.”

erebrus gave downright daddy vibes🥵🥵
and nyx was a bad bitch🛐🛐
i loveee books which have the marriage in trouble trope (except when it includes cheating)
the angst and drama and make up sex was astronomical💍💍💍
hecate was iconic af>>>>
zeus was as usual a raging dick
hera was a bitch
the banter between nyx and erebrus😭😭
thanatos✨✨✨

safety
totally safe
no cheating
no ow/om drama
the mcs didn’t have sex for more than a year
both were faithful

the only thing that stopped me from giving this book 5 stars was the pacing
sometimes the book seemed to be very slow
but the nyx and erebrus scenes made up for it

The writing itself feels like you are being told an ancient epic myth and makes you feel all the raw emotions that are coursing through Nyx and Erebus. For me the descriptions were too lengthy. I found myself skipping to the dialogue (which there wasn’t that much of) and going back if I had questions. There was a lot of telling not showing going on as well.

Honestly, the only characters I liked was Poseidon. I only liked Erebus and Hephaestus because of the author’s fan cast.

Everyone keeps saying Nyx is a badass. I don’t see it. All I see is a woman who is pissed that her man isn’t 100% agreeing with her. They do not have a good or even remotely healthy relationship. Erebus has an important role for Nyx as her shoulder her confidant her assistant that at first I loved, but the further along I got in the story, the more I realized that it wasn’t an equal relationship. So often when strong women are written, it’s like they have to act like men. The gender roles are swapped completely. It’s never a share a give and take. I felt that in spades with this book.

For Zeus to be so bad, Nyx is really exactly like him, except she has sympathy for the humans who worship her. I didn’t feel like he was really afraid of her either. It felt more like he was just pissed at her and envious.

The sex scenes were pretty much fade to black. I found myself completely disengaging from them, and most of the book itself. I used any excuse to leave the book. It was really too long. Compared to The Romanov Oracle, which had its flaws, but constantly had action, there was really no action at all for the majority of this book.

I love Greek gods and their retellings but this was not really a telling or a retelling or a reimagining. It was just there. I was greatly disappointed with this book. I’m sorry to say. I won’t be continuing on with the series, but I am inspired to read more Greek myth retellings.

Do you want a story about strong women and their journey with love, anxiety, and so much more?

Consort of Darkness is the first book in the Asphodel series that broke my heart and slowly stitched it back together.

It’s taken me a while to figure out how I feel about this story because of all the emotions that I felt. I was angry, sad, frustrated, happy, elated, stick it to the man (yes, this is an official feeling), and so much more. I was completely and utterly wrecked. I felt Nyx’s feelings, each one of them in all of their intensity. Maybe it is because I can relate to her as a high-function, strong woman - we feel we can take on the world, but we have emotions, desperations, and anxiety too. It all comes to a breaking point.

Our gods our strong, but our primordials are stronger. We have a different perspective in the story of Zeus’ rise to power with an ageless love story of two strong beings that only want the best for the other - who will do anything to give that to the other, even if it costs them.

Sacrifice. Betrayal. Love. Strong a** females.

Also, please let me just inform you - Hecate - she is a rock and just as much of a bad a** as our FMC. She plays her part and she plays it well.

And a slight disclaimer - I love any type of greek mythology retelling, so I am already drawn to these type of stories. If that is you, then this book is for you.

Also - here is one of my *many* favorite lines in the book: “You said it yourself. You heard it last night. It sounds like you know very well what I do with a powerful woman. Whether you can do the same remains to be seen.”

Who wouldn't want to get down with the literal embodiment of night?

This is the story of a happily ever after eons in the making. A primal, mythological couple literally created to worship and support each other, falling victim to the pitfalls of very human emotions and rediscovering their power through their love.

Nyx and Erebus are older than comprehension, so to say that we begin this story long after the honeymoon period of their relationship feels like a vast understatement, however, Molly introduces them so vividly that I was immediately invested, and beyond that, I felt them in my core like I had been watching their love unfold for millennia. The heart breaks were tangible and my need to see this powerhouse couple overcome one hell of a rough patch was borderline desperate. I couldn’t sleep, worrying that these two were mad at each other.

When it comes to powerful FMC’s, Nyx practically wrote the book. Luckily, Molly was here to transcribe it for us, because this world needs that absolute BAMF of a woman. However, as all powerful as she is, her depths and details of her emotions were enough to make my elder emo heart soar. Like, seriously, tease that hair and pull out the black eye liner, cause girl is going through it. We all remember the first time our hearts were crushed, we just typically drowned it in ice cream and not world ending levels of power.

Erebus is…well he is a doll. A lost puppy. A desperate husband. Oh and he is really hot too. I love Erebus. He is the epitome of the husband that wants to do the most for his wife but is legitimately terrible at gift giving. Like epically bad. Like boy, pay attention. But you can’t help but love him and see where he is coming from.

This is a marriage story. An antique love that has withstood the test of time, but needs a good polish to shine again. The spice is top tier and encompasses the idea of a couple that knows…well knows all the right buttons to push for each other, while understanding that relationships are built on far far more than the physical. With a host of side characters including a fvck boy Hades, a Daddy Poseidon, the queen of all queens Hecate, and our favorite show pony Hermes, a battle of biblical proportions in the background, and love story that rips your heart right open, Consort of Darkness is a must read for lovers of mythological retellings and fantasy romance.

I loved the descriptive writing in this but was confused by some of the jumps in time and povs. Also I didn't like the main characters unfortunately and it seems that Erebus especially couldn't decide if he was an "endless primordial being" or "a normal man who just wants to defend his wife". I feel that it was supposed to be about how the gods are just like us when it comes to relationships and for Nyx to have her story told as a woman but it was just too unlikely for me that they would have such petty arguments. They do make a hot couple though 😉 I will read the next one though because I adore Hecate (in this book and in general) her and Hermes are my forever fav gods 🙌

Was super excited to read this because: mythology. I enjoyed the story & diving into figures from Greek mythology who rarely get the main focus. And we love a badass woman who doesn’t take shit from egotistical men. But I just didn’t feel emotionally connected to the storyline and the characters’ tribulations. Hoping that i’ll feel differently with the future continuations in the series because I will not be deterred from reading them.

I was looking for a Greek myth retelling that wasn't about that one group of gods people seem to always write about, so I was glad to find this one. I liked the overall storyline but the relationships and characterizations of primordials and gods was just weird.

nyx and erebus' relationship seemed based off of miscommunication and when it seemed they were going to work it out they had sex and called it a day...? the sex scenes in general felt really out of place too.

ARC Consort of Darkness.

I knew very little about Erebus & Nyx before reading this, so the story was super intriguing on many levels.

Let's start with Nyx. Molly, girl, I didn't think I'd ever find another character like ACOSF Nesta, but Nyx is up there with the badass babes who take no shit, make you want to go to war with a smirk on your face and pliant muscled men at your feet.

She's strong in every sense of the word, but she also shows her vulnerability often. She's soft and fragile as well as tough and resilient. And to top it off? She is WORSHIPPED by the absolute cutie patootie, cinnamon bun of a man, Erebus. Their relationship is tumultuous and unpredictable, but also so utterly full of adoration, respect and tenderness.

Thank you, Molly, for showing us that even goddesses have anxiety.

DNF at 17%

This came across like reading a textbook where all that was happening is were being told what’s happened hundred of years ago. By 17% I still didn’t know what the point of the story was or who the characters really were, outside of their flat depictions.

Okay bear with me here. Did I absolutely love the writing and imagery? Yup. Did I love the Greek mythology and how in depth it all was? Yes. Did I connect with the characters? No, unfortunately I didn't.

I started this book intrigued and really liking it, but ended this book with no real desire to read the others that will eventually come out. Not all books are for everyone.

I understand some of the characters were supposed to make you feel angry, and they did. Zues is not a cool dude. I just couldn't connect with Nyx after what felt like her millionth temper tantrum towards everything when she is the most powerful primordial ever... she could've ended everything so easily. There wouldn't have been a book if that happened though....

Let's talk about the writing for a second. That I loved. Molly was painting pictures with her words. The imagery of the world building was beautiful. Her descriptions of characters, their powers and feelings were downright magical.

To wrap it all up, I loved the writing and mythology. I couldn't connect with the characters. Again like I said not all books are made for everyone to love.

I love the author and the whole universe in this series but in this it became a bit repetitive. Especially the fighting, crying and avoidance between Nyx and Erebus😕
I love both of them but it became a bit annoying. 🫠❤️

“How much can a heartbreak define you? What does strength mean if you are crippled by the loss of love?”

Consort of Darkness is the first of The Asphodel Series by Molly Tullis.

Molly’s was the first bookstagram account I found when I got back into reading and she inspired me to make my own account so you can imagine who excited I was to receive an arc.

Ostracized by humans, and navigating political deities on the cusp of war, Nyx must decide where she stands and who is worth fighting for.

Okay, let me just get this out of the way first. I LOOOOVE this book! 5 stars in my eyes. Now let me tell you why.

1 The cast of characters is phenomenally written. The dialogue, let me tell you, the dialogue is the perfect mix of laugh out loud, say it again for the people in the back, and quotes you might consider for a tattoo. It’s a diverse mix that keeps you turning the pages. I also like that, once you’re done with the book, you feel like you know several side characters well, not just the MCs.

2 The plot is set at a great pace where it keeps you guessing but you also don’t feel lost. We get character development that doesn’t feel cheesy or forced, and we feel the growing pains of learning, compromising, and setting boundaries.

3 If you have read a lot of mythological retellings, it can be easy sometimes to predict what will happen or how a character will react. Not the case in this one! Molly has made these characters her own and you may be surprised by how some of your favorites interact with others. But don’t worry, we still hate Zeus. 😜🤸🏾‍♀️

All in all, Nyx and Erebus had a captivating story, THE SPICE WAS ON POINT, and I have 36 highlights so that’s saying something. I could say so much more about this book (seriously, I have MAJORLY edited down this review and cut out so many things I wanted to talk about) so please read it for yourself and come DM me after so we can talk about theories for the rest of the series.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys books by Katee Roberts, Alessa Thorn, C N Crawford, Eris Adderly, or Meghan March.

I like the take on death in a positive context. “The fear of this lightlessness is one that is implanted in us by men—by gods—who convince us that only wicked deeds happen in the obsidian depths.”

This is a retelling of Nyx, the primordial goddess of the night. I have not read much of Greek mythology retellings but almost everyone knows the basic version of Mt Olympus— of Zeus, Hercules, Hades and Poseidon— from school or Disney movies. So I enjoyed learning more about the other primordials/titians/gods often overshadowed by the aforementioned original gods. I’ve always wanted to read more Greek myth but am usually overwhelmed by the titles of the gods and their roles in mythological events. More about that below.

The author wrote poetically and powerfully, embodying the primordials’ influence when their power/magic are integrated. Night and Dark as a married couple, their children being the Gods of Death and Sleep, it all makes sense how all the seemingly similar powers are distinctive and governed separately with the way the author describes them as incarnated (while making it easy to follow).

Only reason I gave a 4/5 is that the middle felt a bit repetitive but i get it might be for the emotional/romantic impact. The indie author is in her element so I’m looking forward to reading the story of Hecate and Aeetes in book 2!

I’m new to greek myth retellings so if anyone has any recommendations, please drop some!! I was disappointed by Neon Gods. I need to read Percy Jackson so that’s on my TBR! But I want to find more adult so lmk!!

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

If you enjoy Greek mythology retellings, badass female main characters and beautifully written spicy scenes, this is the book for you!

Consort of Darkness tells the story of Nyx and Erebus, two Primidorals who are stronger than the Gods and Titans. With Kronos running rampant, Zeus demands all Gods, Titans and Primidorals chose a side in what will be one of the most well-known wars.

But Night and Darkness are having problems and they aren't exactly seeing eye to eye... nor have they for a hundred years. They must solve their differences between themselves, for their involvement in the upcoming war is imperative.

Molly really outdid herself with this amazing book - I was drawn in to the drama and lust that surrounds Nyx and I adored getting to see the lesser known gods in a bigger way than most stories portray them. This book had everything I could have wanted in a Greek retelling, the spice was amazingly written and believable, the storyline and plot twists were spot on and it makes me so excited to read the next installment!

Okay so this was a solid 3.5 star book to me.
I think it was a good way to set up the story for the following books but it didn't give me enough for it to be a really good book.
I liked how the author (as much as I love Hades and Persephone) chose a couple from Greek mythology that doesn't get talked about often in retellings.
In the beginning I was a bit skeptical about it because the book is called Consort of Darkness which makes it sound like Nyx is only that when she is so much more. But it becomes apparent very quickly that nobody sees her for who she's married to but for her own power. I really liked that.
I did skim through the sex scenes, just as I did with "The Romanov Oracle" because to me they just weren't appealing and not interesting or well written enough.
It also bothered me that it was so fast paced. To me it would've needed more time to develop the story fully and to really dive into the battles which were unfortunately only 1-2 pages long.
All in all it was an okay read and I did mostly enjoy the story so I will definitely be reading the next book in the series to see if it improves.

I went into this knowing that it would be awesome just because Molly wrote it. I only knew basic greek mythology and knew nothing about Nyx and Erebus. I feel like I learned a bunch along the way but also fell in love with all the characters. If you want a love story with two imperfect primordials that only want each other and what’s best for each other, even if betrayal is the means to that end…..this is the book for you!! It gave me a very different look at the underworld and now I’m going to be going down a mythology rabbit hole because I loved them all soooo much, besides Zeus….he can suck a fat one

This book was so refreshingly different. I loved the new was Tullis brought Greek mythology to life. Her descriptions and portrayals of all the gods were pretty spot on 👌🏼

I also really enjoyed that this was a book about a married couple with over a millennia of marriage under their belt being the MC’s. It was different from the general flow of stories starting with an MC then following them as they fall inevitably in love, however this new POV was so good.

The duality and playfulness of this partnering was **chef’s kiss** 🤭
While I found some of the chapters long-winded and more descriptive than needed, (which honestly had me bored in some places) it’s so worth the read and definitely going to be placed high up there with some of the better books I’ve had the pleasure to read and experience this year ✨

“We are born from shadows, and we return to them when we die.”

I was given an ARC of The Consort of Darkness. I like that these are gods/primordials that I don’t really see much of in retellings. I think Molly did a great job making the primordials relatable. You get to see Nyx & Erebus struggle thru basic relationship hardships such as communication, fear of losing each other, & overall emotional stresses one can go thru when feeling threatened. Along with the romance and struggles, there was a bit of spice and pretty hot too.

The last half of the book is where all the action happens. War is brewing thru the first half and by the last half, without giving too much away, war happens.

Take aways: Zeus is a prick and Hecate is where it’s at. I look forward to Hecate’s book next.

If you like romance & know Greek mythology, you’ll likely get much more out of this book.

This book was dark and angsty and powerful! We all love a shadow daddy, of course, but wayyyyy beyond that, I love a shadow daddy who is a simp for his woman and acknowledges that she’s powerful as fuck. Erebus & Nyx are actually kinda couple goals. Also the amount of lines I highlighted in this book was maybe a little absurd, but there were so many good ones! 🫣 4.25⭐️

This pleasantly surprised me! There are so many Greek mythology retellings out there now and some are much much better than others. This one was great, and I would classify it along the same vein as Madeline Miller's Circe and Jennifer Saint's Elektra. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Nyx and Erebus that was told here.
