Homegrown Hearts #1

Sunshine for Sale

Rate this book
Braxton—the emo kid, the loner, the cynical wallflower with an attitude. It’s no secret that I’ve never quite fit in.
But it’s glaringly obvious now that I’ve moved to this Podunk small town that seems to run entirely on sugar, friendliness, and cheer. (And cows, an ungodly number of cows.)
I hate it—this place where everyone knows everyone, and I’m still the outsider.
But who wants to fit in anyways? I’ve never really tried, never even thought I wanted to… until I met him.
Jimbob is living his best life out here, farming the fields of Kansas, well and truly happy. And I just don’t get it. His charming smiles, playful winks, and easy-going attitude infuriate me, but I can’t look away. He’s like a bright, sunny day sweeping through my prickly hailstorm.
And I’m so utterly confused, because I’ve never felt this way before. There’s just something about Jimbob that makes me want to try.
Makes me want to belong.
Makes me want to put down roots in the glow of his sunshine.

Sunshine for Sale is book one in the Homegrown Hearts series by Cora Rose and Nicole Dykes. This is a very sweet, sexy, fluffy story of finding love, finding your home, and finally, feeling like you fit!

Jimbob is twenty five years old and has lived in small town Kansas on his father’s farm his entire life. He loves his life working the farm and caring for the animals he adores and can’t ever imagine being anywhere else. The only thing he wishes for was someone to share it with. Jimbob is pure sunshine, always smiling, always positive. Lately, he’s been spending more time than usual visiting the feed store in town. Maybe because he’s been feeling drawn to the guy that works there.

Braxton is twenty years old. He’s completely opposite to Jimbob. He wears black clothing, he’s covered in piercings and tattoos, and constantly wears a scowl. Every single time that Jimbob comes in to the store, though, he is drawn to him. It’s like he radiates sunshine. He feels obsessed with him. He’s never been attracted to a man before so what is it about this one? The feeling isn’t going away, though. It only gets stronger. So he might as well try to figure it out.

“It seems he’s infected me with his light. Maybe that’s why I’ve been lurking around him, a shadow trying to find the brightness, trying to find a way into the warmth.”

It was so cute watching these two together. Jimbob just goes with it but he is so careful not to spook Braxton more than he already is. And Braxton, who never felt like he belonged anywhere, finds a peace when he is with Jimbob. And even though he has never done anything with a man, he is so brave! He just jumps right in there and goes for it!

“He’s a thief. He’s stolen something from me. My breath, my heart, my sanity.”

The best part was watching Jimbob’s effect on Braxton. To watch him slowly start to hope that his life might change, to see those first quirks of a smile, and to see him start to gain confidence. I loved the sound of their weekly farmer’s market. I want to go to it. It sounds like a sweet, quirky town. I have a suspicion who the next book might be about so we’ll have to wait to see if I’m right.

“He’s my ray of sunshine, my happiness. My all.”

I did a thing.

I'm not a fan of either author, but I still read this book.

And, honestly, it wasn't half bad.

Jimbob, forever Jimbo to me, is a sweet bear of a man who inexplicably falls for the growly, frowny Braxton and wins him over with gentle words and blushes.

Braxton is like a wounded animal, wanting affection but scared of falling.

There's plenty of sexy action, and the juvenile jokes are kept to a minimum.

Ryan, Jimbob'stepbrother, annoyed the hell out of me. He goes around farting and biting people: on the ear, neck, arm. What. The. Fuck. Even toddlers are reprimanded for that, and we're two years out of a global pandemic.

Unfortunately, Ryan is very obviously a future MC (as per usual, the setup is heavy-handed), so I probably won't be reading the second book.

My biggest gripe is about Braxton's mom. She's depressed and neglectful, using her son as an emotional support human. She's only happy with a man, but gets used and dumped, so Braxton can't leave her yada yada yada.

So what's the resolution to this? Therapy? Nope. She finds a man! And of course this time it's different. She moves in with her new guy, so Braxton is free to move in with Jimbob. And what happens if it doesn't work out and Braxton's mom comes crawling back?

The story is written as if there's no chance of that, but my point is his mom's emotional abuse was never addressed.

That's not surprising considering this is a Cora Rose book. Anytime she deals with a heavy issue it's solved with sex and pot. (Why all the pot, though? No one thinks alcoholism is funny, so why is it humorous when grandpa is popping gummies and stoned all the time?)

Taking this book at face value and not expecting anything deep, I enjoyed it enough to go with 3 stars.

Sunshine for Sale is such a sweet, low-angst opposites attract romance that I could not get enough of. Jimbob is one of the most hopeful, positive, and adorable characters I have ever read. He is an animal whisperer who exudes charm and charisma without even trying.

Jimbob's counterpart, Braxton is prickly, grumpy, and easily annoyed, which makes his dynamic with Jimbob so much fun as it develops and grows into something so sincere. I also enjoyed Jimbob's unrelenting kindness towards his surly love interest who is completely thrown off by Jimbob's easygoing nature.

Overall this is a light story that has some great emotional moments between Braxon and Jimbob. They have a strong bond that develops naturally throughout this story. I loved this cute story and cannot wait for what comes next.

“They’re all too honest. It’s so simple, so easy. Life isn’t like this. They’re all living in some kind of delusion. This isn’t the real world.

And yet, maybe it is. Maybe out here in this small town, it really is just that simple.”

Jimbob, or as I like to call him, Jimbo, was a character introduced in Cora Rose + Nicole Dyke's collaborative series Behind the Camera - a 'sugary-sweet, innocent man who seems too fucking good for the big, bad world'. Having never read a book by Cora Rose and also realizing after two rather unappealing attempts with Nicole Dykes, I figured maybe the combined efforts of these two authors would prove to be a success; and surprisingly, I did enjoy reading that series - not taking itself too seriously, but still with enough heart and written well enough for me to look forward to Jimbob's story that was teased in the later books of the series - hoping against hope that they would continue to surprise me. 🥺

He’s like a puzzle I need to put together to see the whole picture. And I wanna see the whole picture. I bet it’s a kaleidoscope of shapes and colors, an abstract painting that pulls me in from the emotion of it all.

I sensed something was amiss that within the first page of the characters' interaction, Jimbob was immediately drawn to his ass. I thought, okay, sure, some people are attracted more to someone's face or personality, but I can live with that. I should have sensed something was wrong in the way Braxton and Jimbob's relationship took the next step - without preamble or prelude that left me scratching my head, as if I had missed something - at the sudden direction it went in. 🙅🏻‍♀️ 'Really, what’s even more insane about all of this is that I’m so enthralled with and horny for anyone.' I should have realized something was off when both of them thought how wide the age gap between the two of them was that we had to be constantly reminded that Braxton couldn't legally drink yet as he was only twenty years old and as opposed to Jimbob's twenty-five. I mean, really? 😩

But, I think what really sealed its unfortunate fate is the sadly very abysmal handling of their relationship development - in such a distasteful manner that I felt as if the writer's hearts weren't even into the story. Every time they talked or kissed I needed to know if someone's dick wasn't hard, it was twitching. 😵 I kid you not! 😭😭 It became almost ridiculous to the point that I started to keep a tally of how many times it kept happening. It was not lazy writing - it was poor writing. Poor writing that it pained me to see how sloppily everything was depicted. Even the sex scenes were in poor taste - if I could even call them that! 🤦🏻‍♀️ It just felt like it wasn't even taking itself seriously or even trying to - being content with it, just as Jimbob was with the simple, happy-go-lucky life he led, and dare I say it - like a blond bimbo. 😣

And it just made me sad reading it, because I really wanted to be on the receiving end of the authors' combined magic again - hoping it could have still worked some of its charm. But, I didn't find any - it physically pained me to continue reading at times, for how juvenile and absolutely absurd some of the dialogue was; not to mention how some of the jokes were too cringy and awk-weird for my tastes. 😣 And I didn't find any that makes me even remotely interested in reading Ryan's story, a character I cringed every time he appeared at Jimbob's side, either to bite him or climb over his shoulder like the unappealing and annoying character they portrayed him as. Even if he was successful at riling Braxton up and making him jealous of his close relationship with Jimbob. *sighs* But, like the heart that doesn't allow me to dnf, I can't conclude without sharing a few things that were tolerable - and that's me being generous. 🙄

That’s cuz you’re unique,” I say. “And you frown a lot. People are probably wondering how to make you smile.”

The tilt of his lips leaves my mouth dry and my heart thumping painfully in my chest.

He’s so pretty when he lets a little light in.

Jimbob had a heart as big as the sun - I kid you not, he had a heart of gold - always positive, just inherently good that was immediately drawn to Braxton's ass, sorry, I meant his moody personality. It is in fact very true that opposites do attract when it comes to these two, because their personalities were as far away from each other as the sun is to the Earth. But, much like how the Earth has to stay in the sun's orbit to survive, Jimbob eventually does steal Braxton's affections and win him over with his wholesome and bright and sweet actions that disproves his belief that 'sunshine and shadows don’t mix.' 🥺 Even when Braxton continues to send him mixed signals, that defy all the simplicity and straight-shooter that he is, he wanted to break down his defences to let some of his light reach him. He's that good of a guy - an overgrown puppy with his love for animals and his heart that always believes that the grass is greener and just not a bad bone in his body. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

Braxton's emo and sarcastic vibes didn't quite jive with me, because it seemed kinda odd that he was so eager to jump Jimbob at every given second - even when he fiercely hated him - representing everything that he's not: 'lots of smiles. Lots of sunshine' - a walking talking contradiction to everything he's not. It strongly conflicted with his overall mood of asserting himself as someone who's not gay, but it was an interesting train of thought that he would sardonically fight with his inner self with how so opposed he was of falling for Jimbob's wholesome charm. Yeah, 'we'll just see about that' - his words, not mine. But, like a moth to a flame, he's drawn to his warmth - 'I lean into it unwillingly and bask in it' - healing a part of him that he'd avoided for so very long. 🥰

I don’t understand why I’m so infatuated with this guy but I can’t stop myself. I’m not even sure I want to stop myself at this point.

I just want to have something good for once in my life. I just want to let it happen.

I did, however, appreciate the explanation as to why Braxton was not only such a dark and moody child, but also how he was so against ever settling down or finding someone that he could give up his heart to. There is a past and a reason for his jaded emotions that play a part in how his future with Jimbob will eventually pan out. And it was nice to see him get some much needed closure to it, albeit a rather rushed one. 😔 'It makes something inside of me ache. Just like his face must. How does it not hurt him to smile that big?' Jimbob's kind heart and reassuring presence at his side gave him the extra boost of confidence and hope that he could allow himself to change his view on life in a positive light.

Apart from that, I really don't have much more sunshine in me to give a more heaping dose of positivity - nothing that really brought a smile to my face at how sweet they were together. It was a trope that had a lot of potential, of two souls as different as 🌞 and 😶‍🌫️ meet and fall for one another, but sadly failed to do so successfully with me in the way it was treated - just really disappointed with this one - not even worth thinking about again. ☹️

- grumpy x sunshine
- farm boy x emo boy
- first times

Jimbob is sunshine incarnate, and Braxton is his gloomy little storm cloud. These two could not be more different, but somehow their relationship works.

I’ve been in love with Jimbob’s character from the moment he showed up in Bennet’s book, and have been foaming at the mouth for him to get his own, and while I did enjoy his and Braxton’s story… I just wanted more.

It took me a while to connect with Braxton’s character because of how rude he was to my sweet angel baby JB, and he was a bit too jaded, but JB brought out a sweeter side to him and he eventually grew on me.

Overall it was a lighthearted read and kept me hooked, so I can’t complain too much 🤷🏻‍♀️

So unbelievably wholesome. Jimbob is pure sunshine and Braxton is so prickly but they somehow really work together.

My favourite character is Abra-ham the mini pig though 😂

For quite a while this definitely had brainwashed cult vibes - think Stepford Wives meets The Truman Show - and I wasn't sure I was going to finish reading it, but it grew on me, possibly like a fungus, and in the end I really enjoyed it!

There is a part of me that is very bothered that I find a man named Jimbob so damn hot. I'm moving past it with the help of therapy though. And the fact that this book was spectacular definitely helps. I fucking a love a man who's so angry about being attracted to the nicest man in history. Be angry, little grump. I like watching you suffer.

Super cute.

Quick side note: I wonder how a best seller author that made me cry of sadness and laughter with books like Whit and Until Him, has become the most cringy, childish, poop-joke, fart-giggles writer to ever exist. I am not trying to be mean to Cora but I want to understand what happened to make my number one favourite writer become this. It’s so so disappointing. I keep ignoring the little bits that the betas and alphas seem to encourage, but let’s face it, the amazing author that wrote Whit is long, long gone.

Sunshine For Sale is the cutest, most wholesome book. I loved everything about this one. Jimbob and Braxton are completely opposites when it comes to lifestyles, personalities, clothes and jobs.

This grump of a man just needed an escape from the life he felt weighed down by. When he meets Jimbob things start changing for him. I loved how this grouch was also hilarious and intelligent.

MM Romance
First Times
Small Town
Opposites Attract
Golden Retriever MC
Grumpy vs Sunshine

Braxton is grumpy, closed off, irritable, has attitude for days, unsure and everything about him is a gloomy dark cloud. He hasn’t had the easiest life but it hasn’t been terrible.

Jimbob is the sweetest most sunshinest/simple guy I’ve ever read about. He is just so real, a true upfront, good guy who cares and loves deeply. There is nothing not good in this man. This farmer who loves animals as much as people. (Anyone who is an animal lover is a winner in my eyes.) Jimbob makes it his personal mission to put a smile on Braxton’s face.

This was such a fast-paced, easy read. Nicole Dykes and Cora Rose know what they are doing. Even in there writing style, they brought this book through as country, and it was perfect.

Also, where does one get a mini pig? Asking for a friend 😂🫶🏻

4.5 stars, warm happy vibes read

Braxton is 20. He thinks he's straight until Jimbob. Braxton hasn't lived in the small town very long. He doesn't really fit in. He has tattoos and piercings, he's kind of emo, he's a computer guy. He's grumpy and he's always got his back up. He's protective of his mother, who's raised him as a single mom for most his life, and his mom has had the worst luck with men and kept trying and trying with the wrong men. He's fascinated by JimBob. He finds himself showing up where he will be and being unable to stop looking at him. JimBob is big, kind and happy, a ray of sunshine.

JimBob is 25 and gay, he's out but not in your face out because he's a little worried about small town homophobia. He's got a lovely supportive family that is full of really loud personalities, some great characters in that family. He's got a bit of a crush on Braxton and wants to be friends with him but he keeps getting rejected. Jim Bob is a sweetheart of a character. He's a gentle giant. He walks around in his overalls with his cute kitten McMuffin or his mini pig Abra-ham tucked in. He's such a nice person, always thinking the best of people.

But then Braxton starts tackling JimBob and eating him with his mouth. And JimBob is quite happy to let him keep doing that. They give in to their attraction but JimBob slows them down from time to time and stops Braxton from being too self-destructive in their relationship, looking out for him/them. Soon they put the boyfriend label on their relationship and they are happy together and fulfilled as a match, complementing each other.

I enjoyed this book. It was a very very light read, but it was just a warm hug of a book. I love a black cat grump of a character with sharp edges. And JimBob was such a sweetheart. Their relationship was sweet and smutty which was nice. The side characters were enjoyable and there were some nice moments of comic relief. I like a little humor and with my romance.

Yeah there were some things that were kind of silly. Like how many times Braxton called JimBob's dick big and how fast they thought about kids near the end when Braxton hadn't even seemed content to stay in the town forever at that point. But it was warm happy vibes to me and I liked that about this book. I'm looking forward to Beck and Ryan's book, they seem to have a fun dynamic, and Ryan is unhinged and a snarky little biter so I'm interested to see where that goes!

Some notable moments:

I loved the contrary push-pull when they got started and Braxton just kept eating JimBob's face and swearing that it was nothing and he hated JimBob "He’s staring at me, angrily. Like I tricked him or something, put a spell on him. “I just want you to leave me alone.” He’s breathing hard, just staring at me, and I stay still, just watching and waiting to see what his next move will be. He collides with me again, his mouth crushing mine once more, his tongue pushing into my mouth aggressively, his hands in my hair as he positively eats me. Like he’s hungry for it, for me."

Braxton being a sweetheart and being worried about Abra-ham. Aw. "Braxton shifts in his seat. “What if like a hawk gets him? He’s really small.” I set my fork down and cock my head at him, realizing almost immediately what he wants. “You’re right. I’ll go get him…”"

Aw, JimBob so in love "“Braxton,” Jimbob says with a small sigh, pulling me and Abra-ham into his arms and kissing the top of my head. “I’ve wanted you to do this since the day you kissed me. I was already married to you that day.”"

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Sunshine for Sale is the first in the Homegrown Hearts series, but we first fell in love with Jimbob in the Behind The Camera series. He's sweet as sugar, alllmost veering into himbo territory except he's not stupid. He's incredibly kind and generous. Jimbob doesn't quite know what to do with cynical and guarded Braxton. Picture a midwestern golden retriever meeting a feral black cat and you get the general idea.

Sunshine for Sale is a sweet small town romance with low angst. It's impossible not to adore Jimbob and his menagerie of pets, but it was Braxton who was my favourite. He has super high walls and is wary of getting hurt, and I really enjoyed seeing his character progression throughout the book. I wanted Jimbob to change a little as well, but maybe he was perfect just the way he is. The man even cooks!

“What are you doing?” I ask.
“Hating you,” he says as his lips crash onto mine.

3.5⭐️

The above line happens at 13% and I almost DNF’d there 🤷🏼‍♀️ Something about the dynamic between grumpy emo and sunshine farm boy didn’t immediately work for me. I did end up mostly enjoying this book but I think I need to take a break from CR. The toilet humour that seems to be in every single one of her books these days is too much for me and I couldn’t stand Ryan’s character so I doubt I’ll read his book.

Jimbob and Braxton work well together and this is an easy mash-up of Cora’s OTT characters with Nicole’s small town low-angst romance. For fans of both looking for a sweet, easy read this will likely be a hit!

I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion.

Not good.

Jimbob didn't deserve this.

2⭐ for the main characters that should've gotten a better ride.

A small town Kansas City himbo who was potentially a really good character introduced in the camboy series gets a completely stupid story with no depth whatsoever.

The authors were desperately trying to be funny and that's what this was -- desperation and nothing more.

🟢 Small town romance
🟣 Opposites attract
🟡 Age gap - 5 years 20/25
🔵 Size difference
🟠 Gay/bi-awakening
🌶️ Smut is good, probably the only good thing in the book; both vers

This was a small, tight knit community in Kansas where Jimbob, a 25-year old farmer, an openly gay guy is stalked by Braxton, the new guy in town. Braxton's all grumpy, weird and trying to experience his bi-awakening with Jimbob that turned out terribly. It wasn't well executed, no.

Jimbob's character was presented as an idiot, point blank.

"My tractor even has a cup holder. I’m fancy like that."

At first I thought the authors were taking a piss, then the more I read I realised this is written from a perspective of someone who's probably never had first hand experience with the countryside and thinks running after small pigs and buying jam at the local farmer's market is all there is too it.

The authors didn't even dive that deep into two main characters, one comes out of nowhere with no background whatsoever and the other is living this silly fairytale life surrounded with domestic animals -- but jacked, a perfect husband material, always down to bottom for the new guy even though he's never done it before and willing to buy all the honey at the local market to stuff it down Braxton's throat because they're both already playing house with just 1 hook-up under the belt. Completely not believable.

The story was just silly. What a perfect way to flush a good character like Jimbob down the drain. Braxton seemed like a complex character, but again the storytelling took away all the depth Jim and Braxton could've had. And they needed it.

Then, there's Ryan.
I take back what I said in one of my previous reviews that Ryan seemed interesting and had potential. I remember him from before, but this Ryan ruined most of the story!

I mean this is just ridiculous.

"He huffs and then reaches up and puts a hand on my shoulder, tugging me down a bit and biting at my ear. I chuckle, trying to shrug him off. This little asshole, always tormenting me.
“You need to stop biting me.”

He grins wider. “I’ll never stop. You’re so tasty.”"

Yup, this is Ryan biting on Jimbob's earlobe.

"It was always platonic. And by the way Ryan farts on me, I think it’s the same for him. Unless his farts are a way for him to call to a mate."

"I stay dressed just in case Ryan strips out of his underwear in the middle of the night and ends up on top of me. Been there. Done that."

I honestly felt uncomfortable every time Ryan was in the picture. Someone needed to smack the guy, seriously. What a jackass.

Jimbob didn't put up any kind of boundaries so this guy was jumping on his back and doing nasty shit any time he had the chance.

I definitely didn't like the story.
Every aspect of it was OTT and not believable.
Just quickly scribbled down without head or tail.

I love a grumpy x sunshine story and this one was soo cute! Especially when the grumpy clearly wants and likes the sunshine’s attention and is not an asshole. Jimbob was such an endearing character without just being surface level nice, his caring, supportive personality was exactly what an emo boy like Jackson needed.

Jackson was such a fake lil grump, I appreciate that he was never really mean to Jimbob, more so wary and prickly (with good reason) Jackson slowly opening up to him and then just becoming a marshmallow is my fave type of grumpy x sunshine story. This was a cute quick low angst read by two authors I love and I had a great time reading. I hope they write a story for Ryan and Beck bc I also love a brat 😛

He’s a thief. He’s stolen something from me. My breath, my heart, my sanity.
I can truly say that the story in itself, was good, and it was well written. The characters were both likeable. This is a new author for me, but I will diffidently read another of her books. So why the 3.5-star rating? In a word... "Jimbob"!! I ask you in all sincerity...who would actually name their kid Jimbob? Who, over the age of 10, would allow themself to be called Jimbob? That name was the main thing that reduced the book, to a 3.5-star rating. I seriously doubt that anyone who is remotely sexy or considers themselves to be sexy, would ever allow or want themselves to be called Jimbob. Try yelling "Jimbob" in the heights of passion, with any partner...male or a female... and watch your partner nearly collapse with laughter... and you yourself may expire from terminal embarrassment.

I didn't find the story to be especially, what I would call romantic either...but that probably depends on what you consider to be romantic. I'm sure there are many different definitions of the word to many different people. If sex alone is romance in your opinion, then this was romantic. The two main characters didn’t know much of anything about each other, they didn't exchange very many words or even complete thoughts, but that didn't stop them from falling into the nearest bed and having sex...and there are A LOT of sex scenes in this book. Don't get me wrong...I have nothing against sex or sex scenes, I own over 300 M/M Romance books, but I would like the participants to at least say "hello...my name is Jimbob", (well, maybe not the Jimbob part:), before they find and fall into the nearest bed. At least a "thank you" afterwards would be the polite thing before starting the whole show all over again. Those guys must have had superlative superpowers:)

it wasn't at all a bad or an unreadable book. I have nothing but the highest admiration for anyone that can sit down and write a story, manage to get it published, have people buy it and then have them actually read it. I will certainly read this author's work again...but I really hope that the next main character is Joe or Jack....anything but Jimbob! (My sincere apologizes if your son's name is Jimbob.)

This took me four days to finish. I was so bored. I think Cora Rose’s charm has worn off for me. I so did enjoy her first few unhinged books.

The relationship here was promising but never fleshed out into much, like both authors were just kinda writing for the hell of it rather than putting their hearts into it.

I hated the plot with Braxton’s mom. She’s depressed and useless cuz she was raised to believe she needed a man, so for her happy ending she gets a man to take care of her? Puke. It did explain why Braxton was so damaged though.

I also hated Ryan, Jimbob’s step brother. All the farting and biting and being absolutely obnoxious? I don’t understand how the same author who wrote Whit and Sem has suddenly become so gross with all the fart jokes and scenes. They make me cringe so hard.

Overall just very meh.

DNF @ 29%.

I’ve never read Nicole Dykes before, so I’m not sure who is responsible for what. I will say, I’m not a fan of the toilet humour. Or Ryan in general.

And I’m not a fan of Braxton. His POV doesn’t come in til Chapter 4, and if I found him annoying before, well, his POV just made him downright unbearable. Emo? Maybe. A cranky brat, and not the fun kind? Definitely. My coffee stays black, like my soul. Okay, buddy. Why don’t you stomp around and complain about how much you hate grapes some more?

If this is what co-writing between Dykes & Rose produces, I’m not a fan and I don’t want it.

"And that's the problem, isn't it? Sunshine and shadows don't mix."

Jimbob was an absolutely precious human being. I mean, the guy kept a kitten in his overalls pocket whenever he went places. If that isn't the cutest freaking thing I don't know what is. He was just so kindhearted. I wish I actually knew someone like him IRL.

"A moan slips from my mouth at the possessive, angry way he kisses me. Like he wants it so damn bad but he hates that he likes it."

Braxton is another ball of wax altogether. Like it says in the opening quote, he's the shadow to Jimbob's sunshine. He sure AF doesn't make anything easy on Jimbob at the beginning. Mixed signals left and right. I felt really bad for him because not only was he struggling with his sexuality, but he also didn't have the best home life either.

I loved how Jimbob never gave up on Braxton though. He was so patient, even when Braxton would get downright hostile. It was great seeing Braxton slowly open up and begin to trust him. Their relationship was a beautiful thing once these two were all in. I'm hoping Ryan, Jimbob's stepbrother, and a certain widowed cheesemaker are next!

Jimbob built his own house on his father’s farm property, he works there and loves it. He’s happy and it shows. He’s lovable, everybody loves him… uhm, except Braxton.
Braxton hates Jimbob’s face, he tells him rudely.

He’s so grumpy he hates all the sweet smiles and sunshine coming from Jimbob, he wants to kiss them away, ehh, no he doesn’t, he hates those sweet smiles.

“Sometimes I get so lost in my shitty life that I forget how good things can be, if I only look”

There’s a lot going on in Braxton’s head. His life is always fast-paced, unsure, and unsafe, and now Jimbob wants to show him the opposite. Oh no! He can’t let that happen, it will break him.
Poor Braxton didn’t stand a chance, Jimbob is just the kindest laidback sexy guy ever.

Without being intrusive Jimbob helps Braxton where he can. It’s not only Jimbob who’s sunny and gentle, his family and the whole damn town are kind.
Something else than living with a mom who always had the wrong guys around.

Braxton is slowly letting his walls down and when he shows his real self Jimbob loves him even more!
I loved the kind, gentle people, with no second agenda, just real and honest. I wish I could find such a place to live.
The characters were lovable it made me all so mellow.
Overall a wonderfully written story, with all the good feels.

* 2 stars *

I liked the middle part of the story but the beginning and ending just couldn't hold my interest or my attention.

The relationship between Braxton and Jimbob had a nice evolution and progressed at a pace I found believable. They went on dates and spent time together getting to know each other even if Braxton was reluctant at first. It was clear that he wanted the company but didn't want to admit it.

The names of both MCs are not very common, or at least I don't think they are. The fact that Jimbob is a nickname makes things a little better though.

One of the side characters is Ryan, Jimbob's stepbrother. I didn't like him at first. He was too much and his behavior was very weird but nobody acted like it. At some point he became slightly more likeable to me but not enough to make me want to read his story. I liked Beck, though.

☀️ARC REVIEW☀️

Sunshine For Sale by @nicoledauthor & @coraroseromance 💛🧡

Jimbob and Braxton 🥰 I loved this so much! As soon as Jimbob was introduced I was instantly in love with him.

"A man so great he needed two names." - Lauren Conrad

This was the perfect grumpy sunshine, but the grumpy was absolutely hilarious to me and I loved him. I was a bit scared for my precious Jimbob but I instantly adored Braxton too 🥰

Jimbob is the most adorable lil (huge) farmer boy, with his lil animals that he is obsessed with (and so am I) and Braxton is a grumpy kinda city boy who does not want to be in Kansas.

He hates Jimbob. Kinda. He mostly hates him because he LUSTSSSS him so bad. This is kinda bi-awakening but Braxton doesn't really have any concerns about liking a guy, he's just annoyed it's Jimbob 🤣 but Jimbob wins him over by being so patient but also not patient because he just accepts Braxton as he is, he doesn't NEED to be patient. He likes the grumpiness. He just wants to make him a happy grump.

These two were just perfect for eachother and I love them.

I loved all the side characters, can't wait to read more about Ryan, he's like Emery on crack and I need him desperately.

I need more emo boy x farm boy books desperately!

This was adorable and a perfect NicolexCora addition and as always, can't wait for what's next 🥰

Who stole heart more; Abra-Ham or Ryan? The world may never know.

My one albeit kinda significant critique - I wish these authors both would consider not including VERY HEAVY TOPICS in their books as they’re never really addressed and seem to disappear because the focus is shifted to the romance. While that’s all well and good, when you have a 200 page book maybe having a character that has been codependent with his seemingly emotionally abusive mother isn’t the best idea because how can that sort of character development be realistic when the sole focus of the story is the romance? By making romance the cure to all problems EVEN THE MOM WAS CURED BY ROMANCE. And thats… it’s an ick for me. This would have been a 3⭐️ book but Ryan and Abra-Ham were just THAT cute and enjoyable they earned their own stars.

So, all that said… this book was cute & I demand to be president of the Ryan fan club. Amen.

***ARC Review***

This is my honest and voluntary review for the ARC I received.

Cora Rose and Nicole Dykes are back at it! I have been waiting for Jimbob’s story and was so happy to read it!

Jimbob is 25 and the nicest guy ever. He really is pure sunshine. Braxton is 20, going on 21, and a big grump. Jimbob loves (being from) Kansas and small town life. His family is great; his grandpa is especially entertaining. Braxton comes from New York and sticks out in Kansas. He takes care of his mom, instead of the other way around, and it’s clear that his upbringing affects him. Braxton tries to pretend that he doesn’t like anything, but really he’s just afraid of disappointment and heartbreak.

Jimbob and Braxton have a rocky start, but they quickly can’t stay away from each other and I love the connection that develops between them. The progression of their relationship is fascinating. It’s full of snarky comments (from Braxton of course), sweetness, and first times. Things move quickly, but it’s cute and works for them. Jimbob smoothes out some of Braxton’s jagged edges. He really is the purest soul and Braxton needs someone to take care of him for a change.

I’m glad that things work out for Braxton’s mom in the end. I was even happier for Braxton to get a slice of happiness because of his ray of sunshine. Jimbob and Braxton have the makings of a beautiful life together. Their HEA/epilogue are both sweet.

Now, can I say that I’m crossing my fingers for Beck and Ryan’s story? Also, Hayes might one too. *wink wink*

I love an opposites attract so I definitely enjoyed that aspect of the book. Jimbob is such a sweet character and Braxton was just the right amount of grumpy.

It took a bit too long to get to get to the relationship development for my personal taste so that is why I would rate this a solid 3.75 but I rounded up.
