A fluffy, feel-good romance manga for dog lovers! Chiharu enjoys every day with her sweetie of a Rottweiler, who probably weighs as much as she does. Meanwhile, Kiyotaka can't get enough of his fluffy Pomeranian, who barely comes up to his knees. When these two mismatched pairs chance upon each other at the park, they're like oil and water. But, after enough chance meetings, could this turn into an unlikely friendship, or something more?
Chiharu's bold personality in a petite frame strikes a contrast in every way to her scaredy-cat Rottweiler Tsubu-chan--and the same could be said for the sturdy but shy Kiyotaka and his outgoing Pomeranian, Monjuro. Yet, for these inseparable pairs, their long walks together are the highlights of the day. One encounter leads to another, and before long, these two unusual duos find their feelings changing...
Pupposites Attract is a comforting manga for pet lovers about finding joy in the unexpected, and the importance of bonds with both four-legged companions and two-legged ones alike. Perfect for fans of A Man and His Cat and Lovely Muco.
When I saw the cover of this book I knew I had to prepare myself for some cuteness overload, and it really did turn it being one of the cutest most sweetest mana I have read!
Before this I have never read a manga that focuses on dogs or their owners before. The drawing is too cute, the story is too cute and the title speaks for itself.
I can't wait to read more about Chiharu, Kiyotaka and their sweet fluffy companions!
I laughed SO much and even at one point I had to remind myself every one in my household is asleep and can't be laughing THAT loud, but seeing these two opposite "couples" (human x dog) was one of the most precious things I've read recently!
The misunderstanding of how Chiharu and Kiyotaka perceived one another based on their dogs and how they acted with their dogs was quite funny, especially in the beginning! I definitely appreciated how it had the right balance of misunderstanding though! It didn't feel like it was drawn out too much nor too short where it felt rushed in them both realizing there is more to the other person than what they first thought. Again it was perfect!
The creator says this is a "feel good" story and I would say it is more than accurate as I felt SO happy while reading this (and even afterward too)! I am EAGERLY looking forward to volume two releasing as this officially is my favorite read of this month! Also, it definitely goes to show that DOG manga can be just as wholesome as CAT manga!
This book felt like a hug it was so fluffy and cute and as a dog person I am obsessed with all the little paws at the end of the chapters they are so tiny and cute 🥺. The characters are perfect I loved how respectful and thoughtful they were towards each other, like Kiyotaka was such a gentleman like yeah he is a big firefighter but he is such a golden retriever with his small tiny dog and chiharu was so sweet and polite I loved how small she is and how enormous tscbu-chan actually is like he is almost her height😭😭😭. This was such a fun cute time I really enjoyed reading it and wouldn't hesitate to pick volume two. Thank you netgalley, the author and the publisher for the arc.
🧯→ This book was so cute and fluffy 😭 I love their relationship with their pets and Kiyotaka so muchh 😭 A big man who looks so strong and tough but is actually a cinnamon roll with a tiny cute dog? yes!
👩🏫→ Chiharu being such a thoughtful and loving character, I was rooting for them sm !
🧯 → loved the cover, love the concept of this book, love the art style and this book just felt like a warm hug

Thank you to NetGalley, Hono Natsuna and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review 🐩

Monjuro is a perky Pomeranian. Tsubu is a retiring Rottweiler. Their owners are Kiyotaka and Chiharu. Several chance meetings turn to intentional ones as they all grow closer. But if you think I won’t make a lame joke about the relationship going to the dogs, well, you’re barking up the wrong tree.
As a dyed in the wool cat person, this story should have as much weight with me as little Monjuro, but it has a heart as big as Tsubu. It’s a surprisingly fun and wholesome little romance that gives both warm fuzzies and possibly some mild shedding.
Sometimes it really is the smallest thing, and the switch of the dog personalities so Tsubu is the softest Rottweiler in existence and Monjuro basically owns Kiyotaka, instead of the reverse, was a smart play. It might not feel fresh but it at least reheats the leftovers real well.
This also translates to the owners - Chiharu keeps Tsubu on a short leash, but Monjuro could probably murder somebody in front of Kiyotaka and the latter would just run off to grab a shovel and some bleach. It just makes things a touch more interesting than they would be otherwise.
Honestly, Tsubu low-key steals this volume with his wimpy behaviour. Seeing something this huge be this timid and affectionate is not new, but the mangaka has so much fun that it’s hard not to just go along with it and have a good time. And when he worries Chiharu might forget him? The feels!
These little touches enliven a pedestrian (appropriate given how much they walk the dogs) romance that is just getting started, but is very firmly in the ‘shy to admit it but we’ll get there’ camp.
The art is quite nice, the characters are enjoyable to hang out with, the whole thing is chill without feeling bland. It also has a couple of downright hilarious moments - that bit with the CPR dummy just comes out of nowhere and is hysterically vicious.
Even the anthropomorphism of the pooches is done just lightly enough that I’ll allow it. There’s entirely too much charming stuff in this whole thing - this has the world’s cutest dog bib and it’s not even close.
No, if you don’t like pets or slow-burn romance you won’t enjoy this. But I was able to take a chance on this thanks to Kodansha and, boy, was I ever glad that I did. It’s not the next “wow” romance, but it is utterly sweet and heartwarming. The very definition of ‘feel good’.
4 stars - dogs are still things that happen to other people, but if more of them were like this I might be convinced to change my mind (just kidding, my cats rule, but that doesn’t give a good ending line for the review).
This was the first manga I've ever read, and what a cute experience. I picked it up solely because of the dogs, but I enjoyed the story. The two main characters' connection is sweet and wholesome, which is how I prefer romantic storylines. Overall a sweet and quick reading experience.
Thank you NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the advance copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with this arc in exchange for my honest review.
I loved the parts where the owners were alone with their dogs. The parts where they were together were just weird. I mean, how can you repeatedly be amazed at how someone can control his own strength and doesn’t crush his small dog. Just weird.. How are men supposed to hold babies if that was an actual issue…
So Kiyotaka has a small dog and Chiharu has a large dog. Which is a bit funny I guess. But we soon learn that it’s the small dog that is hard to control. They keep running into eachother and they eventually go on a date.
I loved how they really loved their dogs and learning more about them. Especially the backstory of how Chiharu met her dog, was beautiful.
I have a big and a small dog myself and it was wonderful to see both in this manga.
Great start to a series! All the characters (including the dogs) were introduced in a fun and cute way while raising interest for the next volume. I’m also already loving how the romance is bloom between the two. Excited for the next volume.
Basically have a guy with a super small doggie, and a woman with a large big doggie, and they meet at the park and become friends. We then cycle back to the background of the woman, daily lives, and what they do for a living. It's simple slice of life, but very charming and did I mention the dogs? They're ADORABLE. So for a nice laid back style manga with doggies it gets a 4 out of 5.
I’ve never read manga before but I was drawn in by the dog theme, cute cover, and silly title so I thought I’d give this a try. I went in with an open mind and had so much fun with this story! 🐶♥️
It took me a few pages to understand the reading flow but I got there. The story was gentle and sweet. The art was incredible. Hono Natsuna can capture the nuance of dog expressions so authentically! I laughed out loud at some of the dynamics between the humans and their beloved dogs - totally relatable stuff!
The characters were great. I particularly related to Chiharu’s bond with her Rottie and loved their relationship. It was fun seeing how the dogs reacted to their humans developing a friendship. I can’t praise the dog characterization enough… both dogs have such distinct and believable personalities.
I loved the translation notes at the end, I learned some things about honourifics and came to fully appreciate some of the puns and jokes too. It looks like Hono Natsuna is a debut author too - wow, I can’t wait to see what they do next!
I’m so glad I gave this a try! This delightful wee graphic novel hits the shelves on August 6. If you’re a dog guardian or someone who enjoys dogs, this is a gentle, comforting story with heaps of character - check it out!
Huge thanks to Kodansha Comics for making this available on NetGalley! 🐾
Eng Many thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha for the opportunity to read this work. I had never read a manga with dogs before and I must say that all the love Hono Natsuna feels for these animals came through. I really loved the contrast between Chiharu and Tsubu (my favourite) and Kiyotaka and Monjuro. As a teacher, I was very happy to see that Chiharu was doing the same job as me, and had a big dog at home waiting for her, just like me. It's a very sweet manga, which makes your day and makes you love dogs even more. I can't wait to read the second volume.
One thing about me is that generally, the only time I get Really Big Dramatic Feelings is when I read... you add in pets on top of that. The odds of me having Big Emotions while I read skyrockets. Which means that I shouldn't be reading this during the day time. I should be saving it for nighttime, which is when I save all my "In My Feelings" books.
Because I got so emotional TWO DIFFERENT TIMES while I read this, and nothing actually sad was happening.
I really enjoyed this beginning to a new series. I thought it was funny and I can't wait to see our two main characters grow and learn more about each other.
Thank you Kodansha for the ARC! all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own
This was so insanely cute! As a woman with two shih tzu's it was so cute to see a man with a Pomeranian! This was a super quick read of two people who couldn't be more opposite of each other falling for each other. The biggest bonus is the two cutest dogs ever that really make this a five star read for me.
If you are a lover of slow burn romances and of dogs then this would be for you. I can't get over just how cute this was.
this is literally perfect. The "pupposites" in question are actually perfect complements to each other, and the animal content is well-balanced- enough to enhance and share details about the main characters, but not giving the dogs all the personality and fun panels. can't wait to read the next one.
This was such a cute volume! I absolutely love manga about animals and pet owners so I knew i was in for a treat. It was so nice getting to know Chihuru and Kiyotaka while being able to see their relationships with their dogs. This story does feel like a slow burn but I’m eager to see how it turns out.
AWW THIS BOOK WAS SO CUTEE the doggy going outside while it was raining to retrieve his owners jacket and when he thought his owner forgot an important piece of paper he ran all the way to her job OMG SOBBING I love dogs
Edited: After rethinking, I enjoyed this more than I realized. It’s a bit episodic, the premise is cute. The dogs are absolutely adorable. (I'm not really a dog person.)
Very cute. I love the opposite attract dynamic. Everyone is super cute and I'm really rooting for the main duo to keep building in their relationship! super sweet read.
This is SO cute!! I love it!! Also, Chiharu is 29, a teacher, and lives at home?? Perfectly relatable for me!!! The dogs are so so so precious and I love Kiyotaka too. The art style and story is so wholesome, adorable, and sweet. I’m so happy I bought this and the second volume!! I can’t wait to continue!! 🩵 🐶
