Rate this book
Grant Dorset teaches marine biology at a university in South Africa. To award extra credits, he selects two students to assist him in repairing sensors and collecting specimens at sea. As they explore, peculiar signs dot the ocean floor. Undeterred, the trio investigate as they approach a remote island.

Encountering another group of scientists from Wading Industries at an isolated fishing village, the situation rapidly escalates into a desperate struggle for survival. Misinformation spreads and revelations unfold as a terrifying deep-sea predator stalks the shallows.

This formidable monster is deadly and unpredictable. A creature of serpentine design and voracious hunger.

What was once thought to be extinct has now surfaced and it craves flesh.

If you're looking for a story reminiscent of the movie Deep Blue Sea, I'd recommend giving this a read.

Review of this book.

Creepy, but good. Scientists putting their experiments before the lives of people. I know that it can happen. If there is enough money in it for them. Never mind making a name for themselves. Their employer had very deep pockets. This story was well thought out and the author also did a lot of research. Made the story very believable.

Extant was the worse written of the three novels I’ve read by this author. It could’ve been a decent creature feature icky bug. However, this time, the writing got in the way of the story, what there was of it.

The writing was solid third-person, past-tense but there was zero point of view and so much head-hopping I had to re-read some paragraphs to figure out what was going on. The head-hopping was so rampant that sometimes the author would switch heads between characters that weren’t even in the same location. Talk about switching things: an example is one scene set in a remote location from the main action and halfway through the page the author switched back to the current location with no transition whatsoever.

I didn’t get invested in any of the characters so didn’t care when one bit the big one. Since there were a lot of victims, I just read to see what happened as the characters were peripheral. While I’ve really enjoyed some of his work despite the faults, this one seemed half-baked and not very well executed.

On the other hand, the chapters and scenes were short and to the point. The action was almost non-stop. I don’t mind if there’s at least a bit of continuity. For instance, I never knew the island they were on was floating until over halfway through the book. Somehow I missed that it wasn’t solid land.

There was an extremely high body count and of course, the inevitable “what if” at the end. I wasn’t all that happy with the end. I still have two more of his books to read and so far, the one I’m in now is a lot better. Oh, and he knows how to spell toward versus towards in the latest one. For a while in Extant I thought he was British.

I really appreciate this author for writing icky bug and will (hopefully) continue to see him get better with each book.

Fun Deep Sea Thriller

Extant by Brian Gatto is a fun deep sea thriller. The overall plot was well thought out and written. This is a shorter one but that works well for Extant. The characters were all interesting. The Frill Shark was an amazing choice for the deep sea predator. It had some great kills and was all around tuff and very exotic. All in all I def recommend this one.

Great thriller

I enjoyed reading great thriller suspense that goes deep diving into the sea with an unknown creature out there. Highly recommend this book and can't wait to read more from this author.
