“Evening gents.” The bounty hunter’s voice was low and the greeting full of menace. “Nice night for a killing, I’m thinkin’.”
The hunt was on for the devil’s bounty in the sacred Black Hills of the Lakota Sioux. A land forbidden by treaty to white men.
Scout and bounty hunter Garrison Rivers thought leading the expedition would be easy money. But time was running out.
Gold fever had spread like wildfire across the country, and thousands of folks were rushing to seek their fortunes. The US Army couldn’t hold back the prospectors and settlers for much longer, and a young adventurer held the key to a fortune in gold.
But the expedition had to get there first and stake its claim. Failure was not an option.
Rivers knew the Black Hills well and could get the expedition in safely and fast. The Black Hills were a mystical land of beauty and beasts and would push Garrison Rivers to his utmost limits and beyond.
But the tough frontiersman hadn’t reckoned on a double-cross that would bring him face-to-face with Chief Crazy Horse.
Only the toughest, most ruthless would emerge alive… leading Rivers down a trail of bloody treachery and gruesome deaths!
The Devil’s Bounty is set against the backdrop of the wild and merciless frontier. This Western saga pulls you into a heart-racing adventure where the law of the gun prevails and honor is scarce.
In Brody McAllister's The Devil's Bounty (2023), Book 1 of Garrison Rivers Classic Western Adventure series, renowned scout and bounty hunter, Garrison Rivers agrees to lead a team of gold hunters to set up a gold mining operation in lands sacred to the Indians. Garrison is a crotchety mountain man sort of scout who routinely performs the impossible, survives what would kill most, and cares nothing about what should be. He is sought out in this case because he's probably the only scout who can find a way into Indian lands that are protected both spiritually and by US government treaties except him. He is swayed to do this task because the people asking are greenhorns to the extreme--will probably be killed in their effort if Garrison doesn't save them--and they offered him a boatload of money.
The story is a mix of lies, deceit, problem solving, and trying to make work what probably shouldn't. The action never stops, mostly driven by Garrison's indominable spirit and ability to bring life to disaster. A lot happens between entering Indian lands and trying to leave it alive, with lots of unforeseen events that stray from the usual told of the old west and the gold rush days. It is well written though it does get gruesome.
I liked this book, but won't read more in the series. The story was average and character depiction fair at best. I didn't find the characters very engaging and the plot and setting seemed disjointed to me.. Never disappointed to try a new author to me, just not up to my expectations.
Looks like I have a new series to follow. This was a totally different kind of story with so many twists and turns I almost got dizzy. The characters were strong and the action non-stop. Looking forward to book two.
