From one of America’s greatest playwrights, 4 of his finest short plays. Written between 1913 and 1917 and filled with moody, intense and fascinating characters entrapped by larger forces, they include Bound East for Cardiff, In The Zone, The Long Voyage Home and The Moon of the Caribbees.
American playwright Eugene Gladstone O'Neill authored Mourning Becomes Electra in 1931 among his works; he won the Nobel Prize of 1936 for literature, and people awarded him his fourth Pulitzer Prize for Long Day's Journey into Night, produced in 1956.
He won his Nobel Prize "for the power, honesty and deep-felt emotions of his dramatic works, which embody an original concept of tragedy." More than any other dramatist, O'Neill introduced the dramatic realism that Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, and Swedish playwright August Strindberg pioneered to Americans and first used true American vernacular in his speeches.
His plays involve characters, who, engaging in depraved behavior, inhabit the fringes of society, where they struggle to maintain their hopes and aspirations but ultimately slide into disillusionment and despair. O'Neill wrote Ah, Wilderness!, his only comedy: all his other plays involve some degree of tragedy and personal pessimism.
These plays are like short stories that interact with each other even though they stand alone too, capturing an accurate impression of a sailor's hardship and rare pleasures.
In a port in the Caribbean, we meet a crew of European sailors just before World War I. They drink, they fight, they keep their secrets from each other, and they move on, leaving women behind who are doubly cheated: of a life and of the money they speculated on.
On the open sea, sailing eastwards towards Cardiff, one of the fellows dies, dreaming of a life rooted in soil - mourned by a friend whose memories will be the only trace of a lonely sailor buried at sea.
In London, pubs offer solace and endless opportunities to break promises and lose dreams. Robbed of money, robbed of plans, drunk and lonely is the sailor's life.
And then, the hiatus!
Being a sailor is hard enough, but being a sailor with the added anxiety of sailing in a war zone is brutal. Loss of humanity, loss of dignity, loss of trust. Some sailors turn paranoid, and strip their friend of his secret. He's not a spy, after all. Just a man with a broken heart.
What can you do? You sail on, storms come and go, and at some point, Davy Jones calls you!
I enjoyed The Long Voyage Home. The surprise ending really shocked me. To put it as politely as I can: the other plays in this series lacked the quality I've come to expect from Eugene O'Neill's work.
Kitaptaki oyunlar kısa ve tek perdelik. Şiveli İngilizce okumak biraz zor ama eğlenceli. Birkaç gün "'e is a genelman, only 'e kin do ut," gibi şeyler söyleyerek dolaşabilirim. Oyunlar gemicilerin etrafında gelişiyor ve kitap gerçekten kokuyor. Etkileyici olan tek oyun Bound East for Cardiff bence.
