Eden can’t live another moment without Brady knowing she loves him. They’ve been friends for years. She’s outlasted girlfriend after girlfriend, steadfastly by his side, believing in him when no one else did.
So tonight, the night he just won his first Golden Globe, it’s time.
The afterparty at the Beverly Hilton is in full swing as Eden stammers her way through her carefully prepared speech staring intently at his left shoulder.
He thanks her. Tells her he is very flattered.
Ten minutes later, he gets on stage…
And proposes to someone else.
With her world shattered, Eden stumbles across a novel that understands her every feeling of not fitting in. Six months later, she moves to Glasgow to begin work adapting it for the screen.
And discovers she has bitten off more than she can chew.
With the studio constantly on her back, a director determined to run rings around her and a set carpenter she can’t get off her mind, Eden is spinning plates like nobody’s business…
And then she meets Fraser.

Urgh, my worst nightmare the thought of being gagged makes me feel physically sick. That opening first chapter 100% set the tone. Brady and Eden are initially introduced and you get the feel of the high life with a declaration of love and a proposal. Then a move to Scotland from America for Eden. Maeve, Niall are so many characters that make their mark. I loved that the Scottish dialect didn’t take over and it was just the perfect amount for me. I absolutely loved Maeve and her I don’t care attitude. The twist with Jenn was a whole other level though.
Would this series be a hit would it be made in this book? The Fraser and Eden moment and the realisation of who he was hilarious and it was cringey but brilliant. OMG the scandal!! Vikings, history, fighting, steam and so much more even a bit of the old school birdie dance at a party. It was so cruel to end on such a cliff hanger but I was so glad I had book two. For a Novella it’s a perfect read and takes you out of the zone for a good hour. Though this was incredible.
Eden has been in love with Brady for years. But when she finally tells him at the Golden Globes, he goes and proposes to someone else on stage.
Fast forward, Eden is in Glasgow to begin casting for a show. But then she's inundated with messages saying that Brady cheated on his girlfriend... with her, with text messages to prove it. Only, she hadn't sent them, or had an affair with Brady.
Picking herself up, she tries to focus on casting the right people for the show.. and her budding new romance with Fraser.
𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 Short, sweet and such a fun, easy read that I flew through. It was so funny with Eden trying to understand Glaswegian humour and phrases... and myself to be honest in some sentences - but I've learned from working with Glaswegians at work haha!
I read this all in one sitting and went straight onto the next book in the series to see what happens to the characters we meet. Of course, one of those reasons was to see the relationship further bloom with Fraser.
Thank you to LBT for this copy, this review is voluntary.
Chances Are Series by CS Duffy Chances Are Book 1. When I Called You Last Night. When you know, you know. Eden can’t live another moment without Brady knowing that she loved him. Ten minutes later, he gets on stage… And proposes to someone else. With her world shattered, Eden stumbles across a novel that understands her every feeling of not fitting in. Six months later, she moves to Glasgow to begin work adapting it for the screen. And discovers she has bitten off more than she can chew. With the studio constantly on her back, a director determined to run rings around her and a set carpenter she can’t get off her mind, Eden is spinning plates like nobody’s business… And then she meets Fraser. I really did enjoy this book. This is a new author for me. I loved the cover. Very colourful. I did like the blurb. Short chapters so I got into it straight away. Easy to read. I loved Eden Maeve and Fraser. I didn't like Amanda at all. I loved the story. I did love how Maeve was. I read this in two sittings. I did love the horse scene. I'm really looking forward to the next book now. 5*.
I loved this book. It did have one section in it that I wasn’t a fan of but that’s personal preference on what I like to read, hence why I gave it four stars instead of five.
The things I like about this book… well I loved how real it was in the sense that it is how we Scottish people talk to each other. Whilst reading the conversations happening, I could imagine having conversations like this with my friends and in some instances have 🫣. The dialect within the book was realistic of how we speak and it wasn’t written as a fetish which in my opinion is how many ‘romance’ novels based in Scotland are especially when it comes to Scottish men. CS Duffy done a great job at making this book romantic, funny, realistic and enjoyable. There were many moments whilst reading where I had to put the book down because I was laughing at it. There are times in the book where the Scots language is written but not overwhelmingly so and I definitely think if you are a nonnative Scottish speaker it would still be very easy to understand the book.
Overall I really did enjoy this book. Chance are is a series of 6 books I believe and I plan on reading all of them. Fingers crossed they are all as great as this one 🤞. I have faith that they will be when book 1 was a joy to read.
I really enjoyed this book, interesting straight off the mark, I love Maeve and Eden, they are powerful and know who they want as part of their production company. Eden, a showrunner, has her work cut out with Amanda but then Fraser turns up and their chance meeting kicks off a wonderful story!
Brady is one of those guys, the successful one, the dependable one, the loveable one, or so Eden thinks, she's been there for him but are the feelings mutual? Didn't seem that way. It sets Eden on a path to a new life away from him...
I like how Eden and Maeve are relatable, they are friendly and work in a dog eat dog world of productions. Fraser is a gem of a character and I hope to read more about him. Building viking ships as a hobby is impressive! Now we just need to get it near water!
Can't wait to read more of the series and see how the characters progress throughout them. Well worth a read!
So I'm of two minds here. Mostly importantly, we will start with the good. I absolutely enjoyed the chemistry between the main characters. In a fun, short little romp, they were perfect. I was finding myself in a bit of a slump and this was a perfect little palate cleaner to easily move forward.
That said, I had a bit of a problem with the pacing. This is a novella, so I expected a fast pace, but I feel like certain things (such as the aftermath of Brady's big night) needed to be touched upon. Instead, we're taken from that night straight to Glasgow. It felt rushed, even when we are brought back around to learn more.
Overall, this was a fun read. My complaints are fairly minimal and honestly, they could totally be a *me* problem. The good far, far exceeds the bad here. If it sounds interesting, absolutely give it a go.
For me: 3/5 stars
Thank you to @lovebookstours and @csduffywriter for giving me an advance copy of this cute romance.
Oooh this is a great little Novella, I thoroughly enjoyed this! This is the first book in a trilogy and it’s a great introduction into the character’s and their lives. I have to admit, not being from Scotland, it took a bit of extra time for me to interpret the dialogue but I absolutely loved it and it made it feel so much more authentic. I found the story so easy to read, Duffy’s writing style was quick, punchy, fast paced but simple and as mentioned before so easy to follow. I love when authors do this, it makes it much more enjoyable!
Love the bright cover - I think it’s so nice to see - something than the usual steamy cover of a half naked human.
I am loving the characters, I did laugh out loud a couple of times, and cringe with Eden in a few moments - especially the vegan sausage roll!!
I can’t wait to read the next book and share my thoughts.
This is part one of a series of Novellus set in Glasgow, which is part of the reason I chose to read it. I visited Glasgow several times and have family there, so I was familiar with the places mentioned, although after reading this, I’ll never be able to look at the Duke of Wellington statue the same ever again! The book started with a great hook and held my attention from that moment on. I really enjoyed the storyline and the cast of characters. I particularly liked Maeve and Frasier. I thought Maeve was fiery, independent and a force to be reckoned with. I felt like Frazer brought a bit of comic relief with his quick wit and playful sense of humour. The sizzle between him and Erin was fantastic. The book was well written and enjoyable. I can’t wait to follow the story as it continues in the next book.
A great start to the Chances Are books series, When I Called You Last Night follows Eden as she travels across the ocean, from LA to Glasgow, in order to adapt a fantasy novel into a series. Leaving behind her unrequited feelings for Brady, Eden soon meets Maeve, Niall and Fraser who step in to help her vision come to life.
Well, I was so surprised by how this booked started. Described as a 'real Scottish romance' I expected cosy story of flirtatious passion... and while there is that, there is an undercurrent of suspense established in chapter one.
A very enjoyable read, and quick at only 121 pages. The chapters are short and easy to read, the dialogue works well flitting between Eden's American accent and Maeve's Scottish one. The cliffhanger at the end was well written and really makes you want to go straight into book two.
Eden is in love with Brady and tonight is the night she’s going to tell him. They’ve been friends for years and tonight he’s just won his first golden globe. Eden is left heartbroken when ten minutes after telling him he gets on stage and proposes to someone else.
Naturally she’s left devastated but after reading a book which she completely relates to she moves to Glasgow to work on her screen adaptation. She may have taken on more than she can handle and then she meets Fraser.
This was such a quick short enjoyable read for me. It was really engaging and I’ll be honest I moved straight onto book two in the series. I can’t wait for more development of the characters throughout these mini books. It is my understanding that every month there will be a new addition to the story so far 1,2&3 are available. I loved that I had finished it in a very very short space of time!
After reading and loving Before Again, I was super excited to read this new series, and whilst I didn't love it quite as much, I still really enjoyed it! I loved how this is set around Before Again being made into a film, and I really liked all the characters and enjoyed how it was written in Scots dialect and loved Eden's confusion around what they where saying (my fave was why is he referring to me as a barnyard animal, when a taxi driver asks "You okay there hen?) This is the first of 3 short books in the Chances are series because of this I did think it had just got going when it ended but I've book 2 ready to go which I'm sure will pick up where it left off and will be action packed! Keep your eye out for that review later this week!
Honestly I don’t think I’ve read a romcom I’ve liked this much in a while. They were all a very quick read, and page turners. The first book starts off with a big jumpstart and I love how it weaves its way through a couple of the books. In fact all books are well woven together.
The characters are fun and I do love Fraser. He is a lovely MMC who makes the whole book a lot more fun. There are some great twists and turns in the first book that you won’t want to forget!
Some of it is a bit choppy/jumpy in action, but the author mentions it’s a soap opera feel, so if you read these books with that in mind, they’re fantastic. And you won’t see the twists coming. Also, I’ve put in my order for a real life Fraser. Hope he is on his way.
This is book 1 of a 3 part novella series written like a tv drama…
Firstly, this book was hilarious! I’ve seen many a rammie in Sauchiehall street and I was literally laughing out loud at some parts of the story that had Glasgow and their “pished neds” and friendly Glaswegians down to a T!
It was really fast paced and there is quite a lot of different names and characters all thrown in at first and it took me a little while to figure out who was who and what their links were. However, once I was confident who everyone was, I had a great laugh reading this! I’m not sure how people who aren’t Scottish would understand this story though… 😆 The narrative was hilarious and I loved the slang used! Ending on a huge cliff hanger…
Looking forward to moving straight into the next book! 😆🙌🏻
This is such a great wee read and a brilliant start to the series. It really does capture that crushing feeling of professing your love to someone who clearly does not feel the same way and honestly feeling like you have lost everything. The time ay she handles it, and moves off to try something bold and brave, was brilliant.
I liked how the story progressed and developed into a tale that showed the growth and change of a person, as their life changes dramatically.
I also liked the pace of the story, as it was very realistic. It made it very easy to connect and enjoy. I also absolutely loved that the story was based on Glasgow, and had a lot of Scottish life and bits in it. Overall, it was a brilliant book to start the series.
When Eden finally gets the courage to confess her love for her friend Brady, she is devastated when he responds by proposing…to another woman on stage to another woman. How to move on from the hurt and humiliation? If you are reading this review right now, you probably can relate to Eden when she picks up a book that absolutely inspires her. However, she is the lucky lady film writer who can turn that book into something most of us would wait impatiently to binge after reading the book first! When I Called You Last Night is a humorous novella about picking yourself back up after the inevitable stumbles and falls we face…perhaps not so spicy and public as these ones.
Book 1 in the Chances Are series was a quick, fun read. Eden puts herself out there and is devastated by the outcome now she is far, far away from Hollywood and has the chance of a lifetime, to be the showrunner of a series set in Glasgow. Hiring the people she wants adds an interesting cast of characters, but how much control does she actually have? Can she make it all work or will she lose it all? This is full of strong, determined women trying to make their way in a male dominated world. There were moments that had me laughing out loud and being glad it wasn’t happening to me. The story and characters were engaging and I can’t wait to read the next story in the series.
This is the first book in the Chances Are series and cannot be read as a standalone. It follows the story of Eden, who ‘fled’ to Scotland after confessing her love for her best friend.
This was short, quick and interesting. I had a hard time keeping track of all the names that popped up. I love the mixture of Scots language and the depiction of everyday life in Glasgow.
I love Eden and the uncharacteristic strength she displayed in the face of the scandal. I enjoyed her budding relationship with Fraser.
I look forward to reading the concluding stories in this series. I received an advanced copy and the review is mine and voluntary.
This was a quick novella starting a new series that I can't wait to get into! It had some real laugh out loud moments, loads of action, and even some wee spice! I love books set in Scotland. The weegie accent coming through gives it that added special touch. The characters seem really interesting with loads to explore. I really liked the book they are talking about making a movie of here, so it will be interesting to see more of it brought to life. I really like the punchy dialogue and short, snappy chapters that help me fly through. I can't wait to start the next in the series!
This was a quick and easy read that left me wanting more straight away.
It is well written with a funny and compelling story line and well developed characters that i loved and wanted more from, the setting was perfect too. There is even a little steam and I love spicy reads.
There were bits in this that made me laugh out loud and there was a good amount of action happening in the book, none of it felt like filler. The flow and pacing were perfect which I think was helped by the short chapters that packed a punch and really helped things go along naturally.
This is the first book in this brilliant new trilogy, Chances Are. These are super quick reads and as such could really have been read as one over a longer period - I stopped after book one to fit other reads in, but the ending of this one was so quick and abrupt, that I wish I'd just carried on....
We meet our main characters here, but xrelaly only touch on their surfaces. A little background knowledge, before we fly off on this part of their lives - but I can feel that there's going to be so much more to explore over the next two books!
With Eden fleeing USA after heartbreak, I guess we can see where this series is heading - but this didn't spoil anything for me in the reading - the characters were fun and relatable and the writing had me laughing throughout.
I loved the contrast between the Hollywood ideals from the start - to Eden winding up in Scotland, in a small studio, on the production of a book to TV. I found this super exciting because the novel this is based on is one of this authors previous books - Before Again - which I read last year and loved!!
I feel that I'm going to enjoy this series just as much and can't wait to see where book 2 takes us.
When I Called You Last Night is book one in the Chances Are series by CS Duffy.
When I started reading I thought this was just a set of stand a lone novellas but was happy to discover they are all part of a series, written to be like a soap opera, and from reading book one I can see this working very well as a concept as I found the story and characters very interesting.
Eden has traveled to Glasgow to work on The Shadow City series. leaving behind heartbreak in America she discovers she is accused of sending inappropriate messages to Brady which adds to her stress as she tries to work with a new team for the series that she at times clashes with. Will life in Glasgow be good for Eden?
What a quirky book! This novella follows Eden who has moved to Scotland to create a new TV show about a time travelling viking what's not to love about that?
The book starts off with a huge what the heck?? Followed by a declaration of love and a proposal. Just not the one we were hoping for.
Glasgow was perfectly written in this book down to the Glaswegian Scots when Maeve and Fraser were talking.
What I liked about this book in particular was that Eden wasn't the usual doe eyed American coming to the Scottish Highlands bla bla Eden was instead a realistic character just trying to move on from some pretty crappy things that happened in America.
The romance was a slightly different read than what I'm used to (romantasy) but I didn't dislike it haha!
I enjoyed that revelation at the end and looking forward to reading the next in the series!
