My Lying Husband

Rate this book
I’ve struggled to build a good life for me and my son. But one moment will destroy everything.

I hear my son cry out. I rush, half-dressed, to the window and see two men marching up my driveway. They knock my son to the ground. They want the keys to my car.

I phone my husband. ‘Susannah,’ Lance says in a voice I don’t recognise. ‘Hand them the keys. Do not call the police.’

It brings back the wild panic I experienced all those years ago when I discovered I was pregnant after an intense holiday romance. I couldn’t tell the father. And I struggled as a single mother.

But when Lance suggested we move in with him and I could finally give my son a proper loving home it was the happiest day of my life.

But our life was built on lies. Not just about money. Everything.

“If I’d wanted to share my husband I’d have joined a cult.”

There are three house keys on Lance Stratton’s key ring and only one of them is for his own house. Ok, so one is for his ex-wife’s house, but how weird is that?! Whose house does the third key open?

Lance and Susannah Stratton have been happily married, with two adult children, for 20 years. Correction. Apparently happy, that is. One of them is struggling with guilt and leading a double life, and the other will soon face the pain of betrayal. You see, their life together has been built on lies.

Love really is blind.

Susannah would have never removed her rose-coloured glasses if two men hadn’t shown up on her driveway and demanded the keys to her Porsche Macan and her twenty-six-year-old son’s new Mini….

I’m going to stop here because telling too much more would spoil it for you!

The author goes beyond the pain of betrayal and examines the betrayal of living a double life. She explores what it’s like to discover that your reality has been hijacked, your emotions manipulated and your stress is doubling in an effort to maintain a fake reality. She also reveals that for children, even young adults, a father’s deception isn’t merely a breach of trust. It’s ripples affect their well-being. The Knight on the Road is not really who he says he is and everyone plans on bringing him to the curb.

You’ll see three unlikely women who join forces to ‘take down’ a liar, two adults who take the law into their own hands and one man at the center of it all. Secrets don’t stay buried for long. Grab a shovel and head to the Stratton’s home.

As you turn the last page, you’ll be left wondering if a child’s crime is really a parent’s fault.

“Guilt, it’s like a pollutant. It poisons every thought, spoils every day and ruins every plan for the future. How can you feel joy when you live and sleep and dream with the shame of it 24/7?”

A new-to-me author, E.V. Seymour captured my attention and left me searching her backlist.

For some who like clean reads you might like to know that the daughter, Coco, swears a lot. It bothered me and it was completely unnecessary. Had Seymour’s story not captured my interest, I may have set this one aside.

I was gifted this copy by Joffee Books and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Book Title: My Lysing Husband
Author: E.V. Seymour
Publisher: Joffe Books
Genre: Domestic Drama
Pub Date: January 9, 2024
My Rating: 3 Stars
Pages: 360

Story start when the mom hears her twenty-six year old son Frankie shouting. She hurried to look out the window and see two men trying to take his car.
Frankie yelled “Nobody is taking my car".
Mom is certain it is a misunderstanding and hurried to phone for husband, Lance. He states ‘I’ll explain everything later but for now do exactly as they say.”

This domestic drama included extortion, loan sharks, lies, secrets, hidden families, and shall we throw in the Mafia for good measure.
When I started this I wasn’t sure it was going to work for me. The characters were - well let’s just say they were indeed characters!

I do love that Joffe always includes “The Joffe Books Story’ as well as the
‘Glossary of English usage for US Readers’ typical 7 or 8 pages and it seems new words appear all the time! So I try to jot down a few that are a bit of a surprise to me.
In this case –

Oh my wow....lots of twists and turns and that last twist....yeah. a twisty, suspenseful story that had me on a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. One issue though. It would switch between characters, but there was no indication of which character it was. Most books will put the character name at the beginning, so that we know who we are following. It was very annoying. So instead of 4 stars it's a 3 star

A definite recommend besides for the switch of characters

Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC.
A twisty read, intense and thrilling. It has a duplicitous husband, two siblings who are entitled and a wife whose life is totally upended.
She finds out her husband has lied to her about everything that meant anything to her.
But she gets closure and two dear friends in the great ending. Great read!

** a huge thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to review an ARC of this book**

I hate to leave negative reviews, but this one is not for me. It was very hard to get into due to the writing style, it felt kind of choppy and the way the characters spoke felt unnatural and not how normal everyday conversations would flow.

Also, I normally love dual/multiple POV's, but the fact that there is no distiction at the begining of the chapter of who's POV you are reading drove me quite literally insane. Unless you read the book in one sitting, if you ever put it down and pick it back up it takes a century to remember who's POV you are reading,

It had potential, but sadly I DNF"d.

If you are looking for a dark and twisted thriller that will leave you with your jaw on the floor, look no further than E V Seymour’s latest chiller, My Lying Husband.

Susannah might seem to have it all, but her life has been anything but a bed of roses. An intense holiday romance had left her pregnant and unable to tell the father about his child, she had then been left with no other choice but to bring up her beloved son as a single mother. Everything had changed though thanks to Lance. At long last, Susannah could see a way out of the drudgery and misery that had become her life as Lance could offer her and her son the security and stability which she always craved. However, little did Susannah realise that her perfect life was built on lies and deceit.

Susannah is shocked when she hears her son cry out. Rushing to the window, she is terrified when she is met with a horrifying sight that makes her blood run cold: two men have marched up to the driveway and knocked her son to the ground. As she runs to the front door, the men demand that she hand over the keys to her car. Susannah calls Lance in a panic and her fear and trepidation intensify when in a voice she doesn’t recognise, her husband tells her to do whatever the men say and not to call the police.

Just what is her husband keeping from her? What other secrets is he hiding? And what danger are she and her child now in because of her lying husband?

E V Seymour’s My Lying Husband is a creepy, unsettling and unpredictable thriller that will keep you guessing and turning the pages way past your bedtime. From the nail-biting beginning to the heart-stopping climax, My Lying Husband is a book that you just have to devour in a single sitting and is perfect for readers who like their chillers packed with twist after twist.

If you loved The Serial Killer’s Wife, then E V Seymour’s My Lying Husband will be right up your street.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Lance confesses to his family that all is not well financially after two of their cars had been taken away and his step son was hit as the lenders were not what you would consider legit. He bans the family from going to the police as this could only make things a whole lot worse. Susannah, his wife, is thinking of everything she can to try and repay the loan until he tells her just how much it is and gaining speed. Susannah herself has a secret but finds more and more lies that her husband has told. Amy lives with Rollo who had promised to buy her a house, rather than rent as they currently do. He is making every excuse not to do so and switches from telling her he is rolling in cash to being awkward. What is he hiding? Each chapter tells the story from a different character's perspective (putting this as a heading on each one would have been beneficial). Can the family find a way out of this terrible predicament before someone gets really hurt or worse?

This is an enticing read, I found myself turning and turning as the deceits were unfurled. It's a clever premise well executed and apart from the lack of chapter headings I can't fault anything. I felt for Susannah and the tangle that had woven itself around her in every aspect of her life. A well thought out, captivating read with a clever twist or two that kept me engrossed.

My Lying Husband by E.V. Seymour offers a gripping narrative that delves into the complexities of betrayal, deception, and the unraveling of hidden truths. The novel centers around the protagonist, Susannah, as she grapples with the sudden intrusion of two menacing figures into her life, triggering a chain of events that unravel long-held secrets and betrayals. As Susannah confronts the reality of her shattered illusions, the author adeptly explores the multifaceted layers of deception and the toll it takes on both individuals and families.

One of the strengths of the book lies in the author's exploration of the emotional ramifications of betrayal and living a double life. Through Susannah's perspective, readers are offered insight into the profound sense of loss and disorientation that accompanies the discovery of deceit. Additionally, the portrayal of the impact of a father's deception on his children adds depth to the narrative, highlighting the far-reaching consequences of dishonesty.

Despite some shortcomings in plot development, I found myself thoroughly engaged and enjoyed the experience of unraveling the mysteries alongside Susannah. Overall, it's a satisfying read for those intrigued by suspenseful tales of deception and redemption, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an entertaining and thought-provoking story.

Thank you NetGalley and E.V. Seymour for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

An interesting and entertaining book dealing with the betrayal of trust and the effect on different people, culminating in a considerable degree of criminal behaviour. The thriller aspect of this story is danger to individuals, their possessions, relationships and even life itself, and trying to work out whose grievance might be sufficient to cause the adverse events described.
I found the characters rather shallow, existing mainly to carry the story elements like watching a theatre production; these are not real life people. So I did not really engage with any of them either positively or negatively; it is just a story with lots of suspense and danger. In addition, the story switches narrative from one person to another in a way that can make it more difficult to follow. These deficiencies would normally merit 3 stars, but it is well written and engaging and I think definitely better than average.
You have to suspend credulity with this book: there are several things that just would not happen, or would not result in comment or questions well before they result in action. Just treat it as a holiday read and you'll be fine.

Wow! The twists this book took, especially at the end! Not something I ever expected.

One man, three women...their lives are all intertwined whether they know it or not. As the bind that holds them together gets both unraveled and revealed, utter chaos unleashes.

When two men show up at Susannah's house and accost her son, Frankie, she thinks it is all a misunderstanding. She questions her husband, Lance about it, and he assures her that while he owes money to some people, it is nothing to worry about.

Lance's ex wife, and the mother of his daughter Coco, is generally aloof. She wants piece and quiet, and to overall just maintain the status quo. When Susannah, Frankie, and Coco try to get her to help/give advice, she is not a willing participant.

Then there is Amy. Her partner Rollo, isn't around much for her and their three kids. He works hard and with this, she wants a better life for her family. All her dreams are within reach until a stanger shows up to the candy shoppe she works at.

There were so many twists and turns in this book, and I just needed to keep going to see what would happen next! I really enjoyed the pace of this book, the setting (I love books set in the UK!), learning new words (I was glad to have the Kindle tell me what the English (UK) versions of certain words meant!), but most of all, I really enjoyed the character development and growth. The way E.V. Seymour melded these women's lives together, grew their bond, was fantastic. I could really see into the future of these women!

Susannah hears her son, Freddie, yelling out in pain. Susannah sees that Freddie is surrounded by two men, who have knocked him to the ground. Susannah runs out and calls her husband, Lance. Lance tells Susannah not to call the police and to hand over the keys to Freddie's car. This is just the beginning of Susannah's life unravelling. Susannah quickly learns that Lance has been living of life of lies. Lies that will change everything. I don't want to say anything more about the plot, as it is best to go in blind. There are so many surprise twists and turns!

This read is definitely more exciting than your typical domestic thriller. EV Seymour covers new areas and does not just rely on the overdone tropes. It was a very clever read and left me guessing until the end. I liked the switch between multiple characters. It made it hard for me to put the novel down as one character's story often ended on a cliffhanger. Overall, a dark and twisted thriller that is worth the read.

My Lying Husband by E.V. Seymour is a great action thriller full of twists you will not see coming! And the end twists left me with an open mouth! I would not suspect anything like this so yes, absolutely 5 star book!
A little bit annoying was switching between characters as there wasn't a clear indication of who was who but after time I just picked up. But this didn't affect my love for this book! The storyline was great, the twists were unexpected and the book was full of actions!

Susannah's life is turned upside down after her son is attacked and her husband Lance informs that he has a massive loan that will put all family in danger. Susannah has no idea that from now she will discover lies after lies and dark secrets from the past will affect logical actions. Susannah has no idea that this is just the top of the iceberg and anything will be like before...

Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC!

This was such a fun read/ride! The characters were super well written and relatable! However, I do think the writer could have used third person throughout the whole book instead of switching between 1st and 3rd person so much. I can say I felt as connected to Susannah as to Chantal and Amy, so there doesn't seem to have been a need for the use of first person. Also, I would have liked to read a bit more about Coco and Frankie! I really would have liked a flashback from them (I won't say more because I do not want to spoil anything!)

I have to admit that I am very hard on rating thrillers. For a thriller to be a 5 star for me, it really-really-really has to be something amazing!

I would have probably given this book a 3.5 star rating if possible on Goodreads, but I ended up having to round it down to 3 stars due to the "issues" mentioned above and a few spelling mistakes.

Overall, this book was a great read!

3-3.5 stars

This one takes a bit to get going, thinking about the 30-35% mark, but the final twists and turns will make it well worth the slower start.

Wow, I just did not see that coming. You definitely will want to stick it out!! But, I would say, I prefer thrillers that grab you from the beginning, or at least by the 15% mark.

Similar to other reviewers, since it did swap between POVs, it would be nice if the chapters were labeled about whose POV it was. It became more obvious, but still, typically, when books switch POVs, the chapter is labeled so you immediately know. As someone who frequently listens to audiobooks, this should be a must when it comes to the audiobook version, or at bare minimum, you'll need to have multiple narrators so we can keep track of whose POV it is.

My Lying Husband takes about 30% to really get going—not really a favorable pace for a thriller. A lot of the background and POV-switching in the beginning makes some of the reveals in this book painfully obvious, so much so that by the time they're revealed in the plot you're exhausted by the topic altogether. The premise was so intriguing, but the way things played out fell extremely flat and I found myself reading just to finish so I could confirm my suspicions. Luckily for me, my predictions came true, but they didn't feel rewarding by the time I got to the end.

Speaking on the ending, the story gets wrapped up not-so-neatly in the last two chapters. For how long and pointless the first 30% of the book was, it was jarring.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was a book with many twists and turns and the ending was certainly not what I expected. It was suspenseful. That said, it was also a bit confusing. The book followed different characters at different times with no signposts for the reader so it was hard to follow at some points. I think it would have been easier to understand what was going on if the chapters had headings that indicated which character's perspective we were reading from.
I also think the ending was a bit abrupt in that there were not really any clues about what was going to happen so one of the things that happened at the end was a bit of a surprise.
I think that this book would be good for those that like British whodunits.

This was a well written thriller with a fast pace and many twists and turns. A smart and witty turn of phrase made it a real pleasure to read sometimes. I loved the character of Amy whose ordinary origin made her question whether any people in the more affluent areas of society had ordinary names! The female characters are tough and hard working. I highlighted this

“His expression told me that he sensed he was up against a force that was unique: the collective rage of women against injustice, violence and a casual disregard for decent behaviour.”

The girls tackle villains despite being smaller, at one point it became almost a romp. Thanks to Joffe Books for an advance reader copy of this enjoyable read. I will look out for more.

I have had the pleasure of reading many of E V Seymours books published under this name or other pseudonyms and have always enjoyed them but this one which may have been written as an experiment didn't go too well!

I didn't give up reading it but I was hard to concentrate at times as perhaps it was intended to be read by feminist women and not by a bloke like me. I particularly enjoyed her Tallis series of books and also the series of her
alternative to James Bond. But I pushed through to the end and for a murder thriller it was very different having the killing taking place so late in the story. I have another of her books to read which I hope will be more in her usual style of writing. Recommended.

Rounded up from 3.5 stars.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

My Lying Husband is a domestic thriller about the families of Susannah, Chantal and Amy, all of which have something in common. What/who links these women? And does this link put them in danger?
With suspicious characters like Lorenzo and the Mount brothers lurking around, who knows what will happen next and who will survive.

The first part of the book seemed to drag a bit, but once it got to about 30% I was hooked, ended up reading over half of it on Christmas day. I did not see the ending coming at all, although I feel like I should have 😆

Lance owes money. But not to just anyone. 2 men have shown up to take both his wife's and sons car. Lance is in trouble.
Susanna knows there are more secrets that Lance is withholding but doesn't know what they are
Amy waits on Rolo to get home. He is always on the road as a truck driver, and Amy and the kids barely see him. Rolo has promised to buy her a house. He has even taken the money from the account to do so
Susanna keeps getting harassed by these thugs. She must figure out what's going on before she loses everything she has.
Amy must figure out how to make Rolo actually stay with her and the kids and stay off the road

*Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for providing this book, with my honest review below*

This book was chock full of twists and developments, like three thrillers in one! I didn’t have much love for Lance, the lying husband, but I did appreciate that this thriller was more focused on the women in his life, despite the title. A sentimental story that did not end as anticipated, I got tension and mystery but also some lovely connections in the story. Very much enjoyable if you can keep up with the complex storyline!

Thank you again for the ARC, Joffe Books. It is much appreciated and I enjoyed the read and the opportunity to share my feedback.

“But our life was built on lies. Not just about money. Everything.”-My Lying Husband

The premise of this book absolutely hooked me from the beginning. I also love multiple POV’s, but it didn’t work as well in this book. I also felt like it was a bit of a slow burn, and it didn’t get going until 30-40% in, and I like my thrillers to be more fast paced.

I also wanted to connect to the characters more, but sadly, it just wasn’t for me.

Overall, it felt flat for me, but the author did tie everything together at the ending.

This. Author seemed to have been a Silent Witness to some aspects of my thoughts during a traumatic time in my life. Nothing to do with the main plot - just referring to the main character , her childhood. The Book was cleverly written .I never got bored even though I did have a little bit of a guess as regards the villan, or did I? little red herring thrown in there! I’ve never read E.V. Seymour before but definitely will be reading again . Loved the style of the prose and just felt that ‘twinge’ when I finished the Book. I just wanted to keep on reading. Thanks from an Insomniac! Loved it .

Overall, I enjoyed this book! It had an interesting storyline, and a pretty great ending. My only complaint would be about the character point of view. It would switch between characters, but there was no indication of which character's POV it was. Most books will put the character name at the beginning, so that we know who we are following. I had to use context clues to figure out which character I was reading about. Other than that, it was a good story!

This book took me awhile to get into, like about 40% of it. It was a bit confusing because they POV would change but there wouldn’t be any indication of who was speaking at that time. I love multiple POVs, but prefer when the chapter title is named for that person so we know whose viewpoint we are currently reading. I had a hard time connecting with the characters. I did like the ending and how it tied everything together.

I started off thinking this was just the run of the mill story of a husband with a secret life. What I got was a cleverly written tale. The author was able to bring in multiple characters and bring them all together. Told from different points of view but seamlessly brought together.
This was a quick and entertaining read.

Slow start to the book. Seemed like it took a very long time to get to the meat of the story. However, once there it was a fast read.

Found the writing style wasn’t my favorite. Jumping between characters would have been made easier by letting the reader know whose POV was starting at each chapter. Jumping back and forth was a little confusing.
