Venture through the portal, slay the mighty beasts, save the world.
Hard work, perseverance, and a limited social life prepared Daniel for the next stage of his life. After a move to Florida, he's forced to start over right when world experiences a phenomenon like no other.
Portals connect Earth to an unknown planet where monsters roam. What's worse, when they come through to our side, their ferocity and mass increases. The world's militaries rush forward, gun down the mutated beasts, and secure Earth. That all changes when the portals shift with additional rifts opening. Suddenly, humanity is scrambling to find a new normal with societies not accustomed to monsters on the loose.
A few brave souls venture onto the other side in an effort to unravel the mystery and stop the portals. They're met with stat screens, levels, mystifying pillars, lovely locals, and a world filled with Behemoth Monsters.
Interesting storyline but the writing was a bit disjointed at times, but it got better
The MC, Daniel was nearby when a portal to another world manifested. Portals opened up worldwide and of course governments attempted to lock them down. Info leaked that modern weapons disintegrated in the other side of the portal, that a gamelike info system works there and that killing monsters is rewarded with mystic gems. His clever friend, Gavin set up a scheme for them to go to Sweden, a liberal government that would allow them to enter a portal. Gavin set up supplies, lodging, transport, weapons and armor for the exploration. There they killed some denizens, leveled up and gained some gems confirming the reports they'd heard.
Here the story got a bit confusing. New characters where introduced, some of whom got killed off. They started a company to explore and profit from the other world exploration and monster slaughtering. This section of the story did not flow well, but it picked up shortly thereafter.
Gavin became the ceo of the company they formed, staying on the earth side handling logistics, marketing, etc. His character then faded into the background. Daniel became the tip of the spear on the other world being among the first to level enough to create a crafting station. He also rescued two other world natives, who turned out to be human. In a sudden turn he picked up 2 mates, one earthling and one other worlder. He became one of the best sources of finding intelligence on how the new world came to be in the condition it was in. Eventually he destroyed the first of many anti-technology installations that was causing monster spawning. Then more interesting things occurred but l wont go into any more detail here.
The story had its moments with some interesting twists and turns. There were some disjointed and confusing chapters, then the storyline advanced again until there was an unexpected betrayal (maybe). I would read another installment due to the cliff hanger.
Dropped at 77%. Couldn't get behind the MC. He's a bit of a chad. The women threw themselves at him too which is an anticlimactic way to romance that required zero effort on his part so it was boring.
This was a pretty good book. I was hoping for a second one, but it has been a couple of years and nothing else yet, so I don't think that is going to happen. Usually with these types of books, the author can pump out sequels pretty quick. Pretty standard stuff in this one. Portal opens on earth and monsters come out. The MC is an 18-year-old high school senior who is a football star. He ends up killing one of the monsters and gets the bug that he wants to fight. The government just wants to ignore all the portals popping up. Some people have crossed over to "Otherworld" as it is called, and they get access to a "system". The MC and a friend go to Sweeden because that is the only country that will allow people to enter the portals. The go in and gain levels. The MC is sure what he is doing is the best way to help the world. What he is doing is important. He and his friend set up a team to go into the portal and kill Behemoth monsters. At one point he kills a massive monster, and the portal gets closed, leaving him and one of his team Astrid there in the otherworld. He finds a native human on that world and saves her. While he is saving her, she gives him a little of her blood and swears to be his companion and mate. The system acknowledges this, and they are together. Part of the system allows them to go a crafting space and because she is his companion, she can come with him. Astrid is left behind. When she finds out what happened, she immediately gives him her blood and becomes his second mate and companion. She had lusted after him for a while, so it wasn't that big a stretch for her. She would do anything to keep from being left alone. The upgrade their weapons, fight monsters and learn what the system wants from them.
The world building was alright, the magic system was just okay. I mainly liked the characters, and the harem part wasn't over the top and made sense in the context of the story. Overall, a story that wasn't new but enjoyable.
In a nutshell, weirdness occures, things, as they appear, do not quite feel correct. I suspect that the story, as given to our protagonists, is not quite the whole truth. The system, as established in the story, seems a bit too well crafted, was does the 'crafting realm'. Those who are native to the 'Other World' wouldn't know any better, and those coming from Earth should suspect something is not quite on the up and up. While there is sex, its not the center of the story, and actually seems almost natural, within the structure of the 'Other World'. There is WAY more going on here than it seems on the surface...
Note to self: not my type of book, no reason to revisit the series.
The hard pivot in the middle, from adventuring and developing a guild, to a harem and crafting story was rather abrupt. In the course of a minute (audiobook), the MC had a companion/mate without his input, and just as sudden a second one and suddenly, it became a harem book.
The events surrounding said developments, trying to avoid spoilers, took the story wholly out of the path it was on, the one I was enjoying, to almost a different genre. It feels like two books, first and second half, mashed together in the middle with quick glue.
The storytelling in the first half felt disjointed and shallow. There were some off timeskips where what happened didn't get explained well. Once Koli gets introduced, the story really picks up and gets much better.
What an exciting and fun beginning!!! A crazy and interesting mix of portals, science fiction and magic all rolled into one crazy fun story!!! I definitely wasn't expecting that twist at the end nd can't wait to see what comes next!!!!
Good storytelling with interesting characters and an easy to understand plot. Just as things appear to be settling down, a surprising plot twist becomes a cliffhanger leading us to book 2.
The characters are lively, reliable, and self sufficient - all very important traits when trying to fight and outsmart giant creatures bent on killing you. Disappointed another book in what should be a series hasn't come out yet. Hopefully soon.
