Mine to Shield

Rate this book
Can this broken FBI agent and young professor work together to take down a dangerous cult despite their rocky past or will their true identities be exposed, threatening their lives and future together.

Going undercover with the FBI to infiltrate a dangerous cult was the last thing I expected during my week off from teaching. But here I am. Now working alongside a sexy and cocky agent who happens to be the same man who broke my heart ten years ago when he vanished from my life.
I loved him then, but I hate him now.
Right?
Lies and secrets surround us while inside the cult's compound, forcing us together and blurring the boundaries of our fake marriage. Past feelings are rekindled, making our time alone burn hotter than ever.
When the truth comes to light and the depravity of the leader is exposed, can we both make it out alive or will he leave me again, this time for good?

Mine to Shield is a standalone, dual point of view, forced proximity, dark romantic suspense. Each book in the Protection Series can be read as a standalone, but because of character crossover, they are best read in order. Please note this book is for mature readers due to detailed sexual content, foul language, violence, and discussion of abuse.

I feel like everytime I read a Kennedy L. Mitchell I say this, but there is no easing into one of her books. She thrusts you right in there. This time I will say my head was spinning, because dang the beginning just sucks you right in!
Agent Cooper has long been on my radar, I knew his loveable snack-a-holic surfer dude was more than met the eye! Killian Cooper has a giant heart and if he lets you see it, then you are in the circle of trust. This man has lived a life and has the emotional and physical scars to show for it. But he has always been a man in love. He met the love of his life, Millie, in college and then had to leave her for a career and life he never wanted.
Millie is next level smart. This girl is a genius, and so intuitive to others. It makes her the best psychologist. When her best friend and the love of her life vanishes she sets out to figure out what happened to Killian. Which leads her to her life's work; cults.
Killian and Millie’s connection bleeds off the page. These two are so clearly well matched. Killian loves to joke around, and Millie tolerates it. Their intelligence and wit also make them an amazing team. They also provide each other with the emotional support that others so desperately needs. And let’s not even talk about their sexual chemistry. Wowzer. And let me tell you Millie has Killian wrapped around her finger, but she never takes advantage of that and she cares for Killian’s heart so well. These two are so amazing together. They definitely are a couple you would love to hangout with and call friends. As for the mission these two were on, OH.MY.GOODNESS I was literally on the edge of my seat. I had to put my kindle down so many times because I was excited and nervous for what I thought was coming next! If you love romantic suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat and come with some good guys that are never afraid to protect the innocent then this book and series is a must read for you!

I’ve loved the books that I’ve read in this series and this one was just as good. I haven’t read many romantic suspense lately, and to get to read two such great ones back to back was amazing.

Second chance is one of my favorite tropes, which is one of the biggest reasons I jumped at the opportunity to read this one. Millie and Killian meet in college, but thanks to Killian’s father, they are forced apart. It’s 10 years before they see each other again, in an FBI office of all places. The two of them end up fake married, undercover within a deadly cult, with hopes of rescuing a kidnapped teen and shutting down the cult all together.

It was a gripping story from the very beginning. There was a lot of flashbacks in the early parts of the story, so we got a good background of their previous relationship. I didn’t want to put it down.

Thank you to The Author Agency for my ARC of this book.

Immerse yourself in the intense, dark, and suspenseful world of Mine to Shield, a gripping novel recommended for fans of second chances and romantic suspense. The story follows Millie and Killian, whose paths cross again after a decade of heartbreak. Millie goes undercover as Killian's fake wife, thrusting themselves into danger and lies as they strive to expose a sinister cult. As their fake marriage blurs the lines of the past and present, secrets are unearthed and emotions reignite. Kennedy skillfully develops their relationship through deeply emotional scenes, providing a rich depth to their characters. The intricate web of relationships within the Dallas-based BSU Team adds an additional layer of intrigue and familiarity. Mine to Shield is a compelling love story that will leave readers eagerly anticipating what comes next.

Wow! This book was crazy good. I actually enjoyed the FMC and MMC, both separately and together. This book took me on an adventure that kept me asking myself “how is this going to end?” I was actually pleasantly surprised how the author tied it all together. I really enjoyed this book and will definitely recommend to others!

In Kennedy L. Mitchell’s Mine to Shield: A Second Chance, FBI Standalone Romantic Suspense (Protection #9), Killian Cooper, a broken FBI agent, and Millie Anderson, a young professor, work together to take down a dangerous cult despite their rocky past.

Millie goes undercover as the fake wife of the FBI agent, who turns out to be the man who broke her heart ten years ago. She loved Killian with all her heart before discovering he’s been safe all this time, but she’s decided to (try to) hate him. Once Killian and Millie are undercover inside the cult’s compound, they’re surrounded by danger and lies and forced to trust and rely on each other, causing the lines of their fake marriage to blur and past feelings to rekindle. Will they make it out alive together once they uncover the truth and expose the cult’s leader and his evil depravity? Or will Killian leave Millie alone again forever, as she fears?

Mine to Shield is written in Millie and Killian’s first-person POV and tells their love story, alternating between flashbacks to the past—when they meet in college and fall in love—and the present. Once Killian and Millie meet, that’s it. I love how gone they are for one another. Killian and Millian are soulmates, and so meant to be. While Killian was emotionally tortured even then, the things he’s suffered between then and now are unimaginable, and they have changed him in ways she has yet to discover. Molly has matured and become better equipped to be his partner and stand up to him and his forceful alpha personality. Those moments are something to see. They complement and balance each other so well. He keeps her safe. She keeps him emotionally centered. Both are extraordinarily intelligent individuals who are all about each other, though each is deeply insecure about whether those feelings are returned. I love Killian and Millie’s relationship and their interactions—past and present. Kennedy develops and evolves their relationship and characters through intensely emotional, sexy, steamy, intimate interactions and love scenes that reveal their characters and further the plot. She is so skilled at writing love scenes that are deeply emotional and sensual at the same time. I’m always overwhelmed with emotion while reading and when I finish a book by her.

I love the relationships and interactions between Mitchell’s complex, relatable, likable characters that she develops through humorous, snarky, emotional, and suspenseful interactions. The Dallas-based BSU Team is like a family, and it always feels like coming home when you see characters from earlier books again, especially favorites. Killian’s relationships with these characters are essential to his character’s development and evolution. I can’t get enough of this team or this series! I’m so ready for the next one.

An intense, dark, suspenseful, sexy, emotional, steamy, angsty, romantic, and beautiful love story, Mine to Shield is highly recommended for fans of second chances, forced proximity, undercover, pretend marriage, and romantic suspense.

While Mine to Shield is a standalone romance, it has character crossovers with the other books in the Protection Series and is best read in order.

This fast-paced book grabs your attention right from the beginning, and then you’re simply absorbed into the storyline until the end. Told from both lead characters' points of view, we get a good insight into each character and their backgrounds; having the story told in two different timeframes also helps.

Killian Cooper and Millie Anderson are both such interesting characters, and I think this is the main reason why I like this book so much. It’s different, intriguing, and definitely not a run-of-the-mill protector romance. I adore Millie; her social ineptitude and black-and-white honesty are refreshing. I love how much stronger she is now and has learnt how to stand up for herself. Killian has more mystique about him, which is another winner in my book because you crave the knowledge of why he left Millie and where he went. Millie and Killian balance each other so well, plus their chemistry is red hot!

Add in the suspense element and this book has it all! So much so I found myself scrolling as fast as I could read to discover what happens in the story. There are some very humorous moments throughout the book, mainly involving Millie; she is such a hoot—whether she is meant to be or not. Of course, you sit on the edge of your seat with anxiousness, too. Yes, you experience all of the emotions with the characters. I recommend this story wholeheartedly.

MINE TO SHIELD by Kennedy L. Mitchell
Series: The Protection Series (Book 9)
Format: E-book
Star Rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️
Spice: 2.5/5 🔥
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Tropes: Second chance, fake marriage, forced proximity, protective MMC
*Please check CWs

This is my first book from Kennedy L. Mitchell and I enjoyed a break from my recent binge of small town romance with this recent release from her Protection Series. This is book 9 of the series and there were zero gaps in the storyline so they can be read as standalones. I’m a series girlie and prefer to read in order, knowing how much the previous stories add depth to side characters in the current read. I hope to go back and listen to the previous books in the series as she’s beginning to release them in audio format.

Mine to Shield, written partially in flashback, follows FBI agent Killian Cooper and professor Millie Anderson as they go undercover to infiltrate a cult in order to rescue a suspected kidnapped orphan. Under the guise of needing marriage counseling, Killian and Millie are forced to work together after a decade apart. This assignment might be Killian’s chance to come clean and Millie’s chance to get answers. Either way, they have to put the past behind them and play the part to avoid blowing their cover. Their lives are on the line as well as the orphan they were sent to rescue.

I haven’t come across a plot involving a cult so I really enjoyed reading something different and original. It had a Criminal Minds vibe to it and I wish it had been a bit longer with a few more twists and turns of the plot or a little bit more of the story in flashback to give the reader a bit more of a glimpse into their past. However, there may be some more back story on the MMC in the previous books. If that’s the case, I’ll update this review. Overall, I enjoyed the story and plan to check out the rest of the series!

I received this ARC for an honest review. Thanks again to The Author Agency for the opportunity.

"Mine to Shield" by Kennedy L Mitchell is a riveting and intense romantic suspense novel that follows the unexpected journey of a teacher thrust into an undercover mission with the FBI. When she finds herself fake-married to a former love who vanished from her life years ago, tensions rise as they navigate dangerous secrets and a dangerous cult.

Millie is still grappling with unresolved feelings from the past, is forced to confront her emotions as she and her undercover partner Killian delve deeper into the cult's disturbing world. As lies and dangers mount, their fake relationship begins to blur the lines of reality, reigniting old sparks and intensifying their connection.

Kennedy L Mitchell's writing is fast-paced and gripping, weaving together suspense, romance, and complex emotions. The dual points of view provide insight into both characters' perspectives, adding depth to their relationship and the unfolding plot.

As the story progresses, the tension escalates, with the cult's depravity and the characters' personal struggles driving the narrative forward. Kennedy L Mitchell skillfully crafts a tale of love, danger, and redemption, keeping readers on the edge of their seats until the explosive climax.

"Mine to Shield" is a standalone novel within the Protection Series, offering a thrilling and emotional read for fans of dark romantic suspense. While the book contains mature themes and content, including detailed sexual encounters, violence, and discussions of abuse, it ultimately delivers a powerful story of resilience and the enduring strength of love amidst adversity.

“What I felt for Millie was beyond the everyday love. She was my obsession, my rock, my everything.”

I absolutely LOVED Mine To Shield. Millie and Killian were perfection and I loved the bond they shared. I read this entire book in one day and couldn’t put it down once I started.

“He made me feel like I was the only important thing in the world to him and was obsessed with knowing every thought, every dream…everything that made me me.”

Millie’s quirky personality was so much fun. I loved seeing her evolution from shy and awkward college kid to a strong, confident woman. She had so much strength and bravery while also having the sweetest heart.

“No, Millie looked, she saw, and she dug straight into my chest, pulling pieces of me to the surface I didn’t even know were there.”

Killian broke my heart. His love for Millie was on a whole different level. From the moment he met her, he was entranced, and his devotion never wavered. I loved his growly possessiveness and how he would do anything to make sure Millie was safe even if it meant breaking his own heart.

“You’re what got me through the absolute worst time in my life and have ever since. There hasn’t been a day that you haven’t helped me keep going.”

These two were absolute FIRE! Their banter and chemistry sizzled and I loved how they would sacrifice anything for each other. Their love was soul-binding. Add in the roller coaster ride that this story takes you on and you have a deliciously steamy, edge of your seat story that will have you frantically turning the pages to see what happens next. This may be my all time favorite in the Protection series. With well-developed characters and a gripping plot, Mine to Shield was an addictive read that was both suspenseful and heartfelt.

OMG! That was one hell of an intense and extremely thrilling story to read. Right from the beginning I was on the edge of my seat with my heart wanting to burst from my chest, and gasping at all the twists and turns the story takes. I was sucked right in, devoured every freaking crazy moment and could not get enough of this amazing story or its amazing characters.

I have always loved Killian Cooper and I couldn’t wait until he got his own story. He’s such a funny, lovable and sweet man with a crazy snack habit. He also has some serious demons in his past (emotional and physical) that continually haunt him everyday.

Millie is such a phenomenal young woman. She’s brilliant, sassy (even if she doesn’t mean to be), and incredibly intuitive. I just loved how serious she was and the way that Killian was able to break down her defenses and show her how worthy she is. They are definitely two characters that were perfectly matched.

The banter between Killian and Millie was chef’s kiss!!! It was funny, sweet, adorable, and filled with jokes, quips and some seriously heated sexual innuendos. They had me giggling and then sweating all over.

And that insane sexual chemistry that they had – WOW!!! Millie and Killian are sizzling HOT and so damn spicy together!!!

“What I felt for Millie was beyond the everyday love. She was my obsession, my rock, my everything.”

This story was really well written, with such amazing main characters and secondary characters, plus the storyline is incredibly suspenseful, thrilling, and dangerous and filled with shockingly evil and wicked men. The twists and turns kept me in utter suspense to the point where I was waiting with anticipated glee for when Killian would let his inner demons out and destroy them all.

Such a freaking good story!!! I LOVED IT!!!

I received an ARC but all thoughts are my own.

I really enjoyed the story of Millie and Killian! The author handled the flashback scenes really well. They didn't disrupt the flow of the story and they were used just enough to show you the past that these two characters shared. It's been 10 years since Millie has seen Killian after he just vanished and man, the sexual tension was off the charts instantly. Killian is one of those unsuspecting alphas, where he looks like a laid back surfer but could kill a man in 100 ways, and melt your panties with just a look. He was perfect. Millie is a genius who's currently a college Professor but consults with the FBI on certain cases, especially those involving cults. When someone reaches out to the FBI about having concerns that their niece is trapped with a cult, Millie and Killian must team up to find the answers and hopefully save a young girl from a pretty horrible future.

I'll start off by saying I'm not usually a fan of cult story lines. This even carries over into my true crime reading/watching. But Kennedy L. Mitchell handled the story line really well and I was hooked from the start. I think the "telling, not showing" aspect was fantastic, as it made you side eye and question everything, but you still weren't 100% sure what was going on behind the curtain. This was a fast paced book that wasted no time getting to the good stuff. And I loved seeing characters from the other books in the series!

The spice was A+ and used just enough. Millie had no issues asking for what she wanted which I loved, and Killian was more than happy to give it to her. *eyebrow wiggle* If you've enjoyed the other books in this series, it's safe to say you'll enjoy this one too!

Oh my goodnight!!! I just read the alpha-y of Alphas, lol
Killian, Killian, we have one OTt protective hero, we also have a smart mouth, filled with one-liners and jokes for days, oh, and he makes use of his mouth in the other dirty-ish ways. His past and his trauma are heartstrings gripping. I latched on to his character and just felt totally invested in who he was as a person, a protector, acop, a friend, and a lover. He fell hard and fast for Millie, and to me, I felt this storyline is that insta love, his one and only. Soul deep love story! You know the ones... the ones that make you extant giddy and happy when they MMC goes all matcho and say things like "Mine"
Millie, oh my goodness. I LOVED HER. Her character, her smarts, her personality, her determination, and I truly loved her vulnerability. She reminds me a lot of the character Bones, i think that is the best way to describe Millie.
Together, their smartness and determination make up one heck of a story! Not only are we getting a very sweet and spicy romance, but of course, the plot and storyline is another level of epic. I loved the undercover work into a cult. I have read a few storylines involving cults, and they always interest me. This book is gonna give you that deep crushing love, the alpha Alphas that we know Kennedy loves to write about and give us. With some suspense thrown in! So basically, another superb book from the wonderful Kennedy L Mitchell!!

“What I felt for Millie was beyond the everyday love. She was my obsession, my rock, my everything.”
This man! 🙌🏻 He is everything! He is the definition of man obsessed. Also the touch her and die vibes are so strong with this one! Killian and Millie meet in college both are highly intelligent. Millie though is very socially awkward. Has zero friends, is in a senior level class at 19 and always has her head it the books. So when one day Killian decided he is going to basically force her into a friendship she doesn’t put up a fight. Over the course of the book you get to go back in time to watch how there friendship grows and eventually becomes more for both of them. Unfortunately Killian was forced to disappear without a word to anyone including Millie. He never forgot her though. In fact he went as far as to put cameras across the street of her house so he could watch her! I was freaking giddy over these two I could not get enough of the banter and the tension was top notch. I laughed more in this book than any of her others. I couldn’t get enough of Killians inner dialogue. On top of that you have Millie who is quirky and nerdy and has a heart of gold it’s just so hard not to fall in love with these two. For the plot holly cow Kennedy does it again! This plot has you hooked from beginning to end. The cult is freaking crazy! Definitely some cringy things happening there. I always love how for the prologue of her books we always get the killer or victims POV it adds an extra element to the story that immediately draws you in. I really can’t say enough about this book I absolutely loved it and am so grateful for the opportunity to read it!

𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 is a second chance romance featuring a sexy FBI agent, Killian, and a genius, socially awkward professor, Millie. They are both brilliant AF, complimenting each other perfectly.

While this is a second chance romance, it’s different from those I’ve read in the past. The passion and chemistry are palpable, but this story isn’t necessarily about overcoming the trials and tribulations to get their happily ever after. Don’t get me wrong: Killian and Millie have some obstacles in front of them, but there is so much more going on than their love story.

I loved the brief flashbacks into Killian and Millie’s initial friendship/relationship. The way everything happened when they saw each other again? Chef’s kiss. Kennedy L. Mitchell did a phenomenal job with their relationship. She could’ve easily went with the miscommunication trope, but she didn’t (for which I will be forever grateful!). Killian and Millie communicate so well, which was absolutely necessary as they went undercover to liberate someone from a rather unhinged, misogynistic cult.

My favorite thing about these two is their vulnerability with each other. Killian’s insecurities and feelings of inadequacy force him to live life with a facade carefully in place, but he removes his mask for Millie, and only for her. Millie is there for him unconditionally and without question. She helps him through the darkness the way only she can.

I’m not ashamed to say I swooned every time Killian said her name because it was never JUST her name. It was never just Millie—it was always 𝗺𝘆 Millie. In his thoughts; in conversation. Constantly. Freaking swoon.

Thank you for the ARC 🛡️🩵

This book is the first book that I read from the author so it was new for me. But I have to say that I completely adored this reading, the suspense , the tension, the cult story, the fbi, their chemistry in bed but also as a fake and real couple were top tier !!! Millie & Kill are absolutely adorable together. I totally fall in love with my reading and I will differently read more suspense romance like this one.

The author gave me everything I was looking for in a book, the way everything was written was really good, she also handled the flashbacks scenes really nice it didn't make the book super slow to read. It was well done!!

The characters are really lovable especially Millie who's absolutely the cutest! I loved her temper from the beginning, the way she was smart, didn't need anyone to save her, can handle herself. She was a badass! Kill on the other hand is a really dark protagonist who would do literally ANYTHING for Millie and her safety. This man is an fbi agent but also a survivor or torture and trauma. You can easily put yourself in his shoes for everything that he does and I really like that. I loved the way the author did a good job for handling two characters with this much difference and how we can project ourselves with them.

In conclusion I enjoy my reading as you can probably imagine, and I'm so happy for the opportunity. This is completely a different register of genres that I normally read and I completely love it. I highly recommend this book!!!

From page one Kennedy L. Mitchell sucks you into the story. After meeting Killian Cooper in the previous book I knew I wanted to know more of his story. There was definitely more than meets the eye to this surfer dude who is a snackaholic. Millie is a genius who doesn't make friends easily, and when you hurt her- she'll show you the door. Not only does he carry emotional scars but also physical ones.

Throughout the novel we find that Millie and Kill knew each other years ago, but Kill broke her heart when he left without a word one day. Millie has never forgotten him and keeps searching for him to make sure he is okay. This leads her to her life's work- studying cults.

When a girl with ties to a cult goes missing, Millie is brought in due to her expertise. That leads to her finding out who is part of the investigating team- Killian who she hasn't seen in about 10 years and she's not ready for the explanation Killian has.

In order to infiltrate the cult- Killian and Millie must pose as a marries couple, which poses issues for Millie as she wants nothing to due with Killian. Even though she's determined to fight the attraction- you cannot help but see the deep connection these two characters have. The intelligence and wit between the two of them makes them a perfect match because they are also able to provide each other with the emotional support each of them need. They are absolutely amazing together and I love how wrapped around her finger Kill is!

I love that we're given glimpses into Kill and Millies past to get more of their back story in a way that doesn't take away from the present.

I cannot wait to read other books from this author because I am hooked on her writing!

‘If you love a little darkness, murder, and possessive alpha heroes with the need for control mixed into your suspense then this series is for you.’
Mine to Shield is the ninth book in the Protection Series by Kennedy L. Mitchell. This is a series of nine standalone instalments that plunged me into a gripping blend of romance, suspense, and heart-pounding action- and kept me engrossed from beginning to end. Each book in the series cleverly combines high-stakes danger with emotion- creating a perfect balance of adrenaline and heartfelt moments.
Ms. Mitchell’s characters leapt off the page- they are strong, resilient, and yet slightly flawed – which made them feel real …. and the chemistry simmering between them is electric and undeniable.
The suspense elements are tightly woven into the well-developed plots – and I was certainly kept guessing as to how things would play out in the end. Whether it’s unraveling a dangerous conspiracy or facing life-threatening challenges, the tension is palpable, and the stakes feel real, pulling me further into her world of protection, danger, and love.
As well as the action and romance, Ms. Mitchell explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and healing, giving the series extra depth. The pacing is excellent, with just the right mix of fast-paced action and quieter, introspective moments.
The Protection Series is a must-read for fans of romantic suspense - with equal parts of heart and edge-of-your-seat excitement!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Kennedy L. Mitchell!

I was absolutely captivated with Millie and Killian's story! It was so edge of my seat good that I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish it. The danger, the suspense, the web of secrets...absolutely captivating and unputdownable. The love these two had for each other was a once in a lifetime, hold on to it with everything you have kind of love.

Mine to Shield was hands down one of the best romantic suspenses I have ever read. When they reunited after 10 years, to both of their utter shock, it was like all the air left my lungs. I couldn't wait to see what was going to unfold as they embarked on their mission to bring down the cult. The tension and angst that ensued once they were alone that first time...ugh! Sparks were flying off the pages! The way Millie southed Killian's tourtured soul was beautiful, her touch being the only one that didn't make his skin crawl.

Millie was bada$$ and unapologetic and that made Killian love her even more. That woman had his 6 to the end. Not gonna lie, the way she got worked up over his literal killer ways was hot!

There was such a great combination of action, trauma, suspense, steam, and so much love that there's no way this book won't hook you like it did me. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars because it deserves them and more.

Now, I'm going to go back and read the rest of the series to get to know the other characters. I know there's so much more greatness in store with this series and I can't wait!

Killian and Millie knew each other back in college and were friends and lovers. Then one night Killian’s dad shows up at Millie’s apartment and kidnaps him. Ten years later, Millie is a professor, teaching forensic psychology and is a consultant for the FBI. They haven’t seen each other until she shows up at the Dallas BSU unit where Killian is an agent. The two of them go undercover to rescue a teenager whose parents were killed by the cult they were in.

When they first met in college, they had an undeniable attraction and friendship towards one another. Killian has endured a lot in the past ten years and puts on so many facades, but when he’s with Millie, he lets his fears and his past go. You could feel the love he had for her coming off the pages. I love him and his humor and the movie quotes he says even though Millie has no clue what he’s talking about. They’re both very unique in their own ways and I felt they complimented each other very well. I enjoyed the banter between Killian and his friend and fellow agent, Hunter, and the banter between Killian and Millie. There’s amazing friendship and support throughout the book. I absolutely loved the plot of this book! It reminded me of an episode of Criminal Minds where JJ and Reid go undercover as counselors to a cult. If you like that show you will like this book and the series!

I was drawn to Mine to Shield because the blurb reminded me of Criminal Minds. Millie seemed like a female version of Reid, which made me like her even more. Killian was smart, protective, and had a great sense of humor. Their banter was entertaining, and they had excellent chemistry. Their romance gave off an instant love vibe, but when you think about it isn't.

The flashbacks were a great addition, providing an in-depth view of Millie and Killian's past relationship. I had hoped this would offer more insight into Millie's backstory.

I thought the book started strong but fell flat towards the middle. But, it was still entertaining, and I enjoyed the writing enough to convince me to read the other books in the series.

First I want to say I love the Protection Series. Secondly, Mine to Shield is Kennedy L. Mitchell at her finest. This book is the most intense book in the series.
Killian Cooper is a damaged protective FBI agent who will stop at nothing to protect the only woman he has ever loved. Being forced to walk away from her led him down an emotional rabbit hole that he was never able to free himself from.
Millie Anderson is a young college professor who focuses her teaching on the psychology of cults and the impact on their followers (victims). She’s beautiful, smart, and focused. Like Killian, Millie longed for the one person who held her heart even though he shattered it when he left without a trace.
Killian and Millie’s worlds collide when she is asked to share her knowledge of cult life in order to find a missing person. Full of suspense, raw emotions, dander, and steam, Mine To Shield has everything you want in a second chance, enemies-to-lovers romance. Kennedy has written a gripping story with characters that are complex, captivating, and endearing. Even though this is a standalone, I highly recommend reading the books in order because each story in the series is the catalyst for the next book.

Well it’s been a hot minute since I read a suspense romance and Mine to Shield definitely delivers!! This was my first Kennedy Mitchell read and wow! I’m blown away. The only draw back was I hadn’t read the rest of the series first, so I missed the cross over characters, but honestly it wasn’t a huge deal. This book can be read as a stand alone, as I did, but I do think it would be best to read the series in order. Plus it’s fantastic reading, so I plan to start at the beginning and then catch up that way.

Both Millie and Killian are uncover and ready to take down a cult organization. Millie is super smart and Killian is a literal bad a$$. I absolutely loved these two together and thought they not only made the perfect team work wise, but the perfect couple. And their chemistry together? Next level hotness.

There’s not a ton I’ll say regarding the actual plot especially near the end because I’m not going to ruin the edge of the seat reading you’ll do but this book is absolutely fantastic and a must read.

Thank you to Kennedy Mitchell and The Author Agency for the ARC of this book.

I am a sucker for any book by Kennedy L. Mitchell, and I truly believe Mine to Shield is one of her best books yet. If you like a crazy, possessive, broken hero with stalker vibes, who also happens to be in law enforcement. Combined with a sassy, super smart, fearless heroine this is the book for you.
Killian and Millie met in college and fell for each other. When Killian disappeared abruptly, Millie never gave up on him. Imagine her surprise when she finds out where he is now and what he has been doing for the past 10 years. Yes, that man has some serious groveling to do.
But the groveling has to wait because danger is coming and they need to infiltrate a dangerous cult. Together!
This romance has a compelling suspense story and I loved it! The chemistry between Killian and Millie is off the charts hot and I really love his broodiness and the way he needs her to heal.
Kennedy Mitchell is at her best when she writes cults and that is a compelling part of this story.
Well done mrs. Mitchell, congrats on this awesome release! I could not put it down and it cost me some sleep, but that was TOTALLY worth it!

Killian and Millie

This book dragged me in from the beginning. I loved that Kennedy gave us some snap shots of Killian and Millie’s relationship 10 years ago. It made both characters seem more human and gave the reader a glimpse into their easy connection. Killian and Millie definitely went on a journey and the suspense was intense.

After being separated for 10 years Killian and Millie go undercover to take down a cult. They had a lot of hurt and secrets to unravel between them and that drew them even closer. The cult itself was cringy. I kept waiting for them to be discovered and that ramped up the intensity of the book.

I loved how well Killian and Millie worked together. They were truly meant for each other. They were both geniuses and I loved that Millie could see under the playboy mask Killian showed the world. His story was heartbreaking and I enjoyed him unraveling his past for Millie.

Kennedy Mitchell really knows how to write disturbing villains and there were several in this book. I enjoyed every minute, even if my heart was racing through more than 50% of the book.

3.5 stars.

This book had SO many things I enjoy. The FMC was wickedly smart (and probably Autistic, though the author didn’t come right out and say it). It had a bodyguard/protector MMC, which is basically my favorite. He was definitely morally gray with some light stalking tendencies.

They also had great Chemistry together. I liked watching them navigate their situation and each other. The spice was well done and the story well thought out.

There were a few things that drove me nuts though, the nickname “baby cakes” being chief among them. It’s already not the best nick name and he said it all. The. Time.

I really wish I had seen more of their relationship when it developed. I LOVED the flashbacks and seeing young Millie and Killian juxtaposed against adult Killian and Millie.

Everyone also seemed to easily forgive everyone in this too. Millie almost immediately forgave Killian despite ghosting her for ten years, Killian forgave his father despite causing most of his trauma. I just feel like maybe there should have been a touch more healing and groveling.

Overall though, I liked the books and would be interested in more by the author (especially the MMF)
