I've thought Harada's psycho characters were my guilty pleasure, but I guess not anymore. Well, not only.

Can you still be called a human being after you read MADK? And not only read but actually enjoyed it? Like really really enjoyed it. I think this story is absolutely perfect in it's own sickly way and gods I loved every part of it, but I have a strong feeling I need to cleanse my soul???

Got SuBLime's official english edition and I liked how they translated this, only the nitpicky who has the original japanese and knows japanese could argue that J doesn't read as effeminate as intended but to me it's alright as long as he's read posh.

As for the manga, it's basically what the blurb says haha, while it's not completely graphic, the eroguro in the first pages is enough to not be apt for the faint-hearted. However, the combination of gorgerous art with bits of black comedy between the angsty tone of the story makes it a very enjoyable read.

The design of the demons and the way Suzuri Ryo conveys acute emotions through Makoto never cease to impress me, he is a real master of character design.

review for the entire manga:

surprisingly enjoyed this a lot! the plot was very interesting and unique and i was pretty hooked. all of the characters were fascinating as well and the art was neat. thought there would be a lot of explicit sex in this but, there wasn’t that much and what was there was only the necessary stuff for the story. ending was predictable when you got near that point, but, i like how it made everything come together. somewhere between a 4-4.5 rating!

Although I enjoy bizarre and quite disturbing things, this was not for me. It was monotonous, and the plot was in no way engaging. The artwork was the worst; I found it very challenging to comprehend some of the sections.

This manga was strange in a way that was both unsettling and fascinating. At times, it was ugly and disturbing, yet I couldn’t look away. I tore through all three volumes in one sitting.

For all its intensity, though, the ending left a sour taste in my mouth. Some might call it tragic and poetic, but it felt deliberately subversive to me. It rejected a traditional 'happily-ever-after' not because it served the story, but purely for shock value. I didn’t like the hollow, unsettled feeling it left me with.

I know this review might not make much sense, but if you’ve read it, you’d understand how hard it is to put the experience into words. Would I read it again? No. Would I recommend it? Probably not. But I have to give it a high rating because, for better or worse, it did exactly what a great story should. It completely consumed me.

*Original Review 11/23/2020*
This was so fucking weird. I have literal tears in my eyes because I can't stop laughing. The comment from the editor saying the Fjord's dick was the longest they'd ever had to censor really fucking got me. I just I don't know what the fuck I just read.

This dude summons a demon so he can eat him and he does!! Like he literally eats him and then fucks his exposed guts, then the demon tears his throat open so he can fuck his throat??? I- WTF did I just read. I rated it 3 stars cause honestly I just couldn't look away, so my 2 stars (it's okay) didn't cut it and I didn't straight up dislike it so it can't be a one star right? IDK. I have to pick up the second one because honestly what the fuck. Where is this going? I don't exactly like it, but I'm intrigued. I just need to know more.

*Reread 10/16/2021*
Had to give this a reread because I want to get into the second book and it's been a while. The more I've sat with this book, the more I've realized how much I love it. I reread a couple of scenes multiple times now, but this is my first full read through since the first time I read it. So I've boosted my rating to 5 stars, because this is honestly a favorite for me now.

This series is a good mix of darkness and humor. It's so messed up but the story is so interesting and well written. The art is also absolutely gorgeous. I love how elegant the art is in some panels and how cute it is in others. I can't wait to see Mako gain his all powerful demon status and see who he becomes.

*Reread 4/28/2025*
Another cheeky little reread many years later, because I'm a fake ass fan and still haven't picked up the third and final book. I still really loved this. The art, the story, the character designs, I love it all so much. The main reason I haven't finished it is because I'm worried the final book won't be able to conclude this series in a satisfying way. I had expected this series to be a little longer than 3 books. Here's hoping for a satisfying conclusion.

I will admit when I first started this story I wasn't really into it and even contemplated putting it to the side in favor of a more "traditional" story. I kept at it though and slowly I got sucked into this very strange world full of scary looking demons who have the scariest, most freakiest, sex I've ever seen.

I didn't initially connect with Makoto but after a while I started empathizing with him and the confusing situation he was in. I starting caring about what was happening to him and wanted to understand the rules of hell right along with him.

Archduke J is a great character and I'm equally interested in learning more about him as well. I know he wants to make Mako a demon but then what? There seems to be more to his desire than simply that. I can't believe I enjoyed this as much as I did... it was so weird!... but I'm already eagerly awaiting the next volume. I can already tell Mako is going to become a powerful demon and I can't wait to see what he does with that power.

Bizarre and explicit. The contents are truly unspeakable. It's wicked and ugly. But I don't know what's wrong with me smiling like a mad woman finding this adorably cute? I think it was the comical art style that helped in lessening (even a little amount) the weirdness that just couldn't help but cloud in. Oddly, I really liked this!!

Also, Mako is one hell of a disturbed soul—I mean, to end up deciding to summon a demon and ravage its innards to satisfy his soul? Poor mortal boy.

4.5 ★ : MADK by Ryo Suzuri
⇢ Genre: Horror, Psychological, Supernatural, BL
⇢ Pacing: Medium
⇢ Trigger Warnings: Cannibalism, Blood, Explicit Sex, Physical Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Demons

In-depth Rating:
⇢ Plot: ★★★★
⇢ World Building ★★★★
⇢ Art Style ★★★★★
⇢ Satisfactory Level: ★★★★★

Short Review: This manga is all about Makoto, a character who was ostracized by society because of his fucked up hobbies and morbid sexual kinks, summoned a demon and wished for his deepest twisted desire to be granted in exchange for his life. Once he has sated his demented appetites, he fulfills his end of the bargain with the demon only to find he’s been reborn as a monster in hell. It is so dark, vile, and extremely horrifying that even I was contemplating whether to mark this as read out of fear that I would be called an abomination for rating a disturbing manga 4.5 out of 5 stars but do I really care? No. Madk is disgusting yet at the same time, intriguing to read because of how immoral and inhuman the main character is. I want to know more of what Makoto is about to become as he adjusts to his life in hell. The art is immaculate CHEF'S KISSES. I did not expect any character development here nor wished for something positive because I know what I am getting into and oh boy it made me question my sanity.

5⭐️ Review:

Once I started reading this story, I couldn’t stop. I read it all in one sitting and loved every minute of it. For sure, this has become a new favorite of mine.

This is so different from many of the other demented/messed-up stories I’ve read. Though I’ll admit that some panel’s had me twisting the book and asking: “what am I looking at?”

Every character interests me. I need to know J’s full name. I need the backstory between J & Datensho. And I need to see how powerful Makoto becomes.

I’ll be reading volume two asap, then hoping there will be a volume three sometime in the future.

Be sure to check the trigger warnings before deciding to read this, especially if you are squeamish towards body-horror.

Erotic horror manga about a boy Makoto who successfully summons a demon, requests to eat him, then f*cks him and his souls is taken to the demon realm where Makoto because sort of apprentice, sort of lover, sort of "do whatever I want with you" boy - which I liked very much. Surprisingly it does have a decent plot going on and I want to see more of the gorey sex scenes. The art is stunning, I love the panel composition, the character designs are spoton and cute!
There are a dubious consent/rape scene so it's not 100% consentual horny gore fun but it's hell so I expected something in the manner to happen.

Came for the art, stayed for the dubiously consensual gore fetish! Probably couldn't recommend it to the casual reader without a handful of content warnings, but oh mannnn is the art ever nice.

To jest takie porypane. Zachwyt.

Makoto wzywa demona.

Chce go zjeść. Woli oddać duszę demonowi, żeby raz zaspokoić swoje pragnienie i zginąć. Erotyzm Battaile w czystej postaci.

J jednak widzi w nim pewien potencjał, więc zamiast pochłonąć duszę Makoto zmienia go w demona.

I czego chce sam Makoto?

first chapter made me yell inside my head “what the fuck did i just read ?!?!?!?” this has an unnerving mix of repulsing and gripping (a new take which make it interesting) themes. it is such a challenge to read through this bc of how immoral the scenes are but it makes one curious on what will happen next so here i am, going to read the next volume :D

i decided to give this a reread and once again, i found myself not liking it. i know my tastes have changed from years ago, but clearly i can’t rock with ryo’s works. i could hardly make out the art at times and i didn’t like how the story was progressing. plus, it was kind of tame for it to be about demons. the beginning was interesting, but it lost its spark towards the end.

Genuinely impressed that a manga about cannibalism and gore can be so boring. I don't have a problem with how freaky it gets. That said, I'm put off by how incoherent the story is. Having a bunch of weird stuff happen one after another with no narrative direction just isn't very compelling.

This may be a me problem bc I went into it expecting something slightly different, and this really didn't match that vibe (it was supposed to be like slow damage, and I see where this comparison is coming from, but it doesn't satisfy that same itch for dark and gritty story).
It's extremely serious in one scene, then over-the-top and bubbly in another. The MC is kinda pissing me off as well bc his personality is all over the place. You can never expect his reaction, which ig was the point in the story, but it doesn't make him feel like a person (it's like he's emoting and not experiencing emotions if that makes sense).

I'm willing to give it a chance since it's only 3 volumes, but I'm not loving it so far.

I’m always unsure of how to rate/review manga, do I base it off dialogue? art? plot?

Well, MADK is five stars for all of the above, but damn, the art is absolutely fucking beautiful! I keep just flicking through the book and gazing lovingly at Mako and J.

The plot is really interesting to me. I love the whole ‘sell your soul and become a pet” to some intimidating demon/god/being. I can’t wait to see where the next volume goes, and I’m excited to see how Mako grows as a demon.

This was so weird and fucked up.

Makoto has a kink for eating demon flesh... He makes a deal with a demon called J. to give up his soul in return of being able to eat him. Once makoto gets his fill on J's flesh, he's taken to hell to become a sort of protégé for J.

The artwork is amazing.
