The Quarter Moon is book 4 in the Afterlife Saga by Stephanie Hudson. This book royally pissed me off and broke my heart at the same time. I'm going to start by saying that we don't see Dominic in 90% of this book. But, honestly, his actions when we do see him, he made me even madder than I already was before his entrance into this book. And by the end of the book, I just wanted to cry.
I love the way that Keira doesn't care what “King Dominic” decrees, she does what she will and I just love the impression that she's making on the entire supernatural realm, and most of all many of the hell's brethren she meets in this 4th instalment. Even though she doesn't like the title of 'Electus' she still grabs the title, grows stronger in her own power, proves her worth in the supernatural world that is ingrained in her and is just as much a part of her, just as much as her beating heart.
Quarter Moon shows you how it's done! This book throws a huge wrench into everything that you thought you knew about Keira and Dominic's relationship and it throws everything up in the air. And I promise you, you'll think you have it all figured out, but just when you think you know what's going on, who's who, and what the truth is, Stephanie laughs and Bam! You realize that things aren't what you thought. I spent most of this book in pure shock and disbelief and cursing out Stephanie for what she's putting poor Keira through and these new events started to play out.
And when I started to think that there was no hope left for a reunion for Keira and Dominic, we suddenly get some real defining moments as we get to see Keira's inner strength and her personal character growth. And then all of the sudden you start gaining a new respect for our FMC as she walks the road that takes her down this journey of her life.
We see Keira go from this grief-stricken heartbroken woman to getting up, brushing off her knees, and deciding that she's going to go to hell and back to find the love of her life and find the other half of her soul.
Stephanie exceeded and excelled in her descriptions of things like the River Styx and you feel like you are actually there and you're immersed within the world that continues to flow consistently with the previous books.
Keira's plight is to fight the danger that surrounds her and yet, she can't keep down her sassy, sarcastic British humour and this helps to keep the story fresh and it also helps to keep a strand of hope alive; this delivered a momentary brightness in a world that we find is so profoundly dark and uncaring. Even the pitch black darkness that surrounds Keira still holds rays of light and goodness.
We learn from the Oracle that Dominic Draven is in hell and as Keira is proving her very worth in this supernatural community as she swears she is going to do anything and go anywhere to get the King back, to take him back home to Afterlife, right where he belongs.
Keira learns that the only way she is going to get any information on locating Dominic is through the powerful Oracle. Keira can't do anything but take the bait that the Oracle lays out for her in the letters she first sends to Keira. After Keira sets out on this mission she quickly realizes that she's bitten off more than she can handle on her own.
This is where we meet Siguard; he was the last kind of aid that I thought would come to save Keira in the form of a 'shadowed-knight-serpent-bad-ass-biker-demon-dude' and I could see him giving Dominic a run for his money in the ring for power. Siguard is also the King of the Ouroboros, and the need he has to protect Keira runs blood deep and he sets off with Keira, of course at the bequest of the Oracle to help Keira seek all the answers that they needed to figure out how to open the gates to the Devil's playground.
After Keira meets Siguard she ends up meeting Jack Cerberus; The very gatekeeper to hell and all the resident Hell-beasts, and he is kind of a werewolf. He's deadly, unforgiving, and most of all feared, and it is Jack who holds the only key to open the doors to hell, and fortunately for Keira, he seems to be in need of a new pet. In order to gain his protection and to gain entrance to the underworld Keira must give Jack her own vow, but she doesn't know what the personal cost is going to be. All Keira cares about is managing to achieve her goal and find her way back to Dominic, so she finally makes a choice that not only unites them, but will give her the crucial leverage in this deadly game of hide and seek that Dominic seems to be playing.
Stephanie seriously puts Keira through a thrill ride in this book and honestly, the book is going to leave you feeling stunned and shocked. It feels like Stephanie put everything she has into this book and I don't know what she has left to put into the next one. I love the way that Stephanie can take what appears to be a simple idea and breathe life into it.
Stephanie slowly breathes life into this book and slowly builds it up until we reach this cataclysmic finale, a finale that is unpredictable and astonishing. I didn't see the book ending the way that it did and honestly, I was really upset with Dominic for the way things ended. I want what's best for Keira because I have come to love Keira like she's my little sister and after everything she's gone through, everything that she's suffered and sacrificed, I couldn't believe what Dominic said and did to her.
I can say that despite feeling bereft in this book, The Quarter Moon gave me so much that I wanted and needed and so much more. Stephanie touched on each and every emotion and it pulls you in so deep and this book refuses to let you go till the very last word.
Afterlife could honestly have rivaled so many worldwide international bestsellers and I really wish it had. But, with this 4th book, we see this saga go off the road and steer off into a whole new direction and it's going to be interesting to see where Stephanie takes us next.
We still get to see our favourite characters from the previous books but with the introduction of newly hot inked leather boot wearing demons who will do whatever it takes to protect Keira... well it's going to be interesting to see how long those loyalties can go unquestioned. But, knowing how strong Keira is and how much she loves Draven, despite it all, and how strong she is deep down, if she can stay true to Dominic and the love she has for him, or will she finally let him go as he wanted and move on with her life like he kept pushing her to do.
Once again Stephanie Hudson has blown this book out of the water and done an amazing job in writing this book and I have to recommend this entire series so far. I can't wait to read the next book, The Pentagram Child Pt. 1.
