Well…that was something.
I was very interested in the plot and the mystery pretty quickly, but that interest died off towards the middle of the book. By the end, I was skimming through some of the parts that followed Charles as he tried to unravel the mystery behind his house and the death of his daughter. Was this gruesome? Absolutely. Enough to warrant some caution when picking up this book. It made me sick to my stomach with some of the depictions of body horror. By the end, I was pretty underwhelmed with the direction this took. I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it, but I don’t think it’s terrible either.

A truly creepy tale this and with a surprise ending. I've had it here for a while and though I don't usually make resolutions, this year I've decided to read some of the books that have been on TBR the longest starting with this one. It shouldn't have been left so long. It's a good read and I hope it finds another home soon..

I feel I should have liked this one way more than I did.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all bad. The straightforward elements of this story – the mystery, the basic ghost story, the set-up – were all very good. The first I’d say two thirds of the book ticked along pretty well, and it was all very promising. It’s just the further in I got, the more it all started to unravel. From a strong beginning with good pacing, a real sense of threat, and a delicious haunting, it kind of spiralled into a very confused story. Things ramped up quickly, which isn’t always a bad thing in a short horror novel, but there was no real explanation or focus, and I have to say that for me it spiralled into the realm of shock value, which is such a shame.

The thing that disappointed me the most was the villain. At first it seems like one of those good old descents into madness in the pursuit of knowledge that I love – a proper bit of corruption. But then it’s just dropped, and everything becomes contradictory, and it turns out he’s evil because he just is. Or maybe it’s syphilis? It was mentioned that he probably had this disease that’s known for causing insanity, but this was also never followed up, and the narrative certainly didn’t treat it like a potential explanation, so I don’t know why it was even mentioned. There’s a lot of potential directions for this and it seems the book just went straight into "the real evil is man" territory but then tried to spice it up a bit by making said evil man a ghost. It just wasn’t very compelling compared to everything else, and .

As for Charles, our narrator… look. I’m not one of those people who thinks every decision a horror character makes is stupid. I understand that if a character makes all the logical decisions, there’s not going to be a story. But Charles was not very bright, and he did annoy me. I think, under writing with a better direction, this could have been used to illustrate his growing obsession, but that’s my charitable interpretation and it’s doing a lot of heavy lifting. He has inconsistent motivations and priorities and he makes some really stupid choices that have no in-universe reason and that are far too big to ignore. It’s necessary for the plot, but there needs to be some internal logic. Instead these choices made it very clear that this was a book, and not a very complex one. For example, And even more unforgivably, Then Charles goes and hangs out at the crime scene looking really suspicious, and somehow gets away with that as well, and it’s just… too many things are happening too conveniently. I get there has to be a plot, but as a writer, you have to sell the sequence of events. If it’s too convenient it’s just lazy and insulting to the reader’s intelligence.

Finally, as I mentioned earlier, the climax had none of the set-up and care of the earlier chapters, and it was really pushing the boundaries of the absurd. Horror can get away with being absurd, of course, but combined with the inconsistencies and the shock value, it didn’t work. It was just a little silly. I guess if you’re new to the horror genre it might be shocking, but anyone who’s read any horror probably knows that murder, torture, and incest crop up a lot. Aycliffe makes the mistake of assuming that just by including these things, it will be horrible and shocking, but that’s not the case. It came out of nowhere, there’s no real reason for it, there’s no examination, no sitting with the implications or the aftermath. The victims, who until this point have been reasonably developed characters, become two-dimensional objects to be tortured and raped. Everybody loses their characterisation, and I still don’t know why was even there. She hung out and then when the climax happened she was like "aight I’m out" and that was it. Alright, I get all the implications, but the story never puts them together in a satisfying manner and I’m left knowing what happened but seeing none of the payoff.

It was a compelling book, but it just didn’t come together for me. And I really despite the cheap shock factor. The set-up was so good, and then it just fell back on tropes and using taboos to shock. I’m surprised he didn’t throw cannibalism in there for good measure. It’s honestly such a shame, because the atmosphere and set-up of the first part of the book was really good. It’s possible to do orgies of violence right (see Exquisite Corpse) but this was confused and inconsistent and just didn’t pull it off.

Hello everyone, I finally read that deeply unsettling book everyone keeps talking about: Naomi’s Room by Jonathan Aycliffe. It’s honestly such a shame that Aycliffe’s novels haven’t been translated into Turkish, because he has a powerful, immersive, and highly atmospheric style that pulls the reader straight into the story.

The book is set in Cambridge. On Christmas Eve, four-year-old Naomi disappears. Her father, Charles, desperately searches for her, but we learn the horrific truth of what happened to Naomi very early on. From that moment, the story moves beyond simple fear into something far darker. What begins as a family drama quickly becomes entangled with supernatural events, ghosts, and the mysteries of an old house. Through Charles’s perspective, we feel both the weight of loss and the growing terror of the unexplainable things happening inside the house. What starts with Charles’s belief slowly spreads to the rest of the family—his wife Laura and his sister Carol begin to sense that they are not alone. First, they see Naomi, and then the ghosts of those who once lived in the house during the Victorian era. Something truly terrible is hidden in the attic. As days pass, Charles realizes his thoughts are becoming increasingly violent, and everything begins to spiral out of control.

When it comes to characters, Charles is the most dominant figure. His despair, rage, and helplessness as a father come through with painful clarity. Another key character is Dr. Liddley, who stands at the center of the events; we follow what truly happened through his journals. The supporting characters—journalists, police officers, and others—only deepen the darkness of the atmosphere.

This was an extremely disturbing read. The sense of dread intensifies dramatically toward the end. Among all the horror novels I’ve read, this one stands out for its pure, unfiltered fear. The scenes set inside the house and especially in the attic are deeply uncomfortable. The secrets that come to light and the constant “what if?” lingering in the reader’s mind are handled incredibly well. Even now, that sense of uncertainty stays with me—and that “what if” sits somewhere between terror and psychological horror.

The atmosphere is saturated with gothic horror. Narrow corridors, an old house, nighttime noises, and ghostly apparitions create the feel of a classic haunted house story. But beyond that, there is an overwhelming sense of grief and helplessness that truly shakes you. In terms of horror categories, it fits both gothic and psychological horror perfectly. I absolutely recommend it—this is, in my opinion, an ultimate horror novel.

This is one of the best examples of how and where first-person narration can fall short. Because we only ever see events through Charles’s eyes, the abrupt shift at the end feels more psychological than grounded. Without any external perspective, he comes across as potentially unreliable. After all, we're reading his written account.

I might have forgiven the predictable conclusion if it had been more convincing or better executed. I typically appreciate bleak endings, so this should have worked for me. But despite its emotional weight, the ending didn’t hit as hard as it should have for a story that takes such a dark turn. I liked the author's choice to suggest rather than explicitly show at times, but there’s a difference between subtlety and relying too heavily on implication, and this book leans too much into the latter. The lore had potential, but because Charles avoids diving into details, the background of the house remains underdeveloped.

In the end, it reads more like a personal journal than a fully fleshed-out novel. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, not because I shy away from gore, violence, or tragedy (as long as they serve a purpose), but because the story fails to deliver on all fronts. There’s no payoff in terms of plot, atmosphere, or tension to make up for its shortcomings.

Finally after basically the whole year, I finished this less than 200 page book. Tbh if not for the short page count I probably would have dropped this book the moment I realized it wasn’t what i thought the story would be. I thought there would be more mystery about naomi and her situation, but it was pretty cut and dry about that whole thing. I won’t divulge further, but yeah, the fact it’s short made me continue bc i thought it would be done quick, but maybe I should have just dropped it? Not sure. I don’t regret reading it now that i’m done, but the middle was quite the snooze-fest and even with the shorter page count I found some areas where it seemed the author was going off tangents that weren’t related to the plot. The whole twist was predicted and expected, but it was still shudder worthy with the themes it tackled. The ending would have gone in either two ways by that point and i’m at least glad the author didn’t shy away from the better ending imo.

This book has been recommended to me many times, so I finally gave in and read it. A lot of people said this book was really scary and one that has sat with them for years. I will say it was very creepy, but not scary. The last few chapters were also a bit more grotesque than I would’ve liked, but I very much enjoyed the book!

A man and his daughter are shopping before Christmas when he turns around for just a moment and she has gone missing. When she’s finally discovered it’s bad news and it sends this man and his wife spiraling. A news reporter has taken pictures of his house and discovered people in the windows that aren’t there. This is a story about a man dealing with grief, living with unearthly beings in his house, and trying to find out the history of why this is happening and who is responsible.

Very good, creepy read, but there are definitely some trigger warnings!

Some books you can pick up and just keep going until you've finished the final page. Others make you want to put them down for a breather while you try to recover from what you just read. This book definitely belongs in the latter group, and the beginning had me really on edge. Jonathan Aycliffe has a style of writing that comes across as quite matter of fact, so when he hits you with the most horrific details it becomes all the more impactful. I both desperately wanted to know what happens and also really didn't! The only criticism I have is that the ending felt very short and rushed, so it was very jarring compared to the rest of the story. I didn't mind how it concluded, just the abruptness of the ending.

Gente Biruta e Antiga

The first 80% had a strong mystery element to it that I enjoyed. The last 20-30 pages were very disturbing and uncomfortable. As I was reading this, I was wondering why this was not a movie until the ending. This would be too gruesome of a movie. I never wish to see this on screen. I wish the ending was different. Good horror book, but the ending is way too horrific. Lots of trigger warnings. It was shocking, but absolutely horrific. I’m going to hold back nausea throughout my day now thinking about this.

3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book was alright, I feel like it was a good story a good mystery at the beginning and mid way, which kept me going. But idk I just didn’t feel satisfied at the end for some reason, some things I still am kinda like “but what about this”
It wasn’t a bad ending, I was just like “oh, huh, well ok” . There was spooky parts, disturbing parts and a really good mystery, it was a really quick read so if you’re looking for a quick genre switch pallet cleanser, it achieved that

I thought the plot was good, though some aspects weren’t too clear — like why was Liddley tied to the house of his body wasn’t there? Other than that, I thought it was very spooky most of the time, though the middle parts involved a lot of telling and less showing (especially when the MC learns of Liddley’s history), which tended to be a bit boring.

I was hoping for an atmospheric gothic ghost story, but unfortunately the writer doesn't hit that at all. Instead the writer attempts to scare by throwing in a lot of gruesome details purely intended to shock the reader. But it just doesn't fit with the tone of the rest of the story. a bit disappointing, but I did enjoy it up to a point.

Honestly, it’s super well written and feels really cinematic. The start is pretty slow though—I didn’t find it scary or even that exciting at first. But then the second half hits, and wow… it’s so much better! Creepy, intense, and actually pretty terrifying. I ended up having a really good time with it.

Not impressed by this one. It started out okay, but shortly after that my focus went to finishing this novel instead of enjoying it, because it got so monotonous.
I found that the prose was rather dry and florid. So much so that it was oftentimes difficult to keep my eyes open.

The ending felt like a cheap shock factor that failed to deliver on all fronts.

This had everything I want in a horror book. It was short, packed with a creepy atmosphere, filled with ghosts, and anchored by a genuinely scary mystery. The twist was horrific and deeply traumatizing, and it hit hard. Dark, unsettling, and impossible to forget.
