There’s a new fairy in town, and no one in Nightmare, Arizona, is happy about it. Olivia Kendrick learns why when she and Annabelle team up to help out at the annual Nightmare Fall Festival.
When Annabelle is found dead inside the corn maze the night of the festival’s kickoff party, the police don’t think it’s murder. Olivia and her supernatural friends at Nightmare Sanctuary Haunted House know better, and it will be up to them to catch the killer.
Even as Olivia closes in on the truth of Annabelle’s murder, her boss Damien seems further away than ever. Can Olivia convince him to explore his own paranormal power so the two of them can find his missing father?
Poisoning at the Party is book five in the Nightmare, Arizona paranormal cozy mystery series. This lighthearted series is about starting over, found family, and solving murders in a quirky old mining town with a secret supernatural community.
Beth Dolgner writes paranormal fiction and non-fiction. Her interest in things that go bump in the night really took off on a trip to Savannah, Georgia, so it's fitting that the Betty Boo, Ghost Hunter Series of paranormal romance novels takes place in that spooky city. Beth's young adult novels, the steampunk Manifest and the urban fantasy A Talent for Death, also have paranormal elements. Her non-fiction work includes Georgia Spirits and Specters and Everyday Voodoo.
Since Georgia is obviously on her mind, you might think Beth lives there. Well, she did, but these days she and her husband live in Berlin, Germany, with their three cats. Beth misses those mild Georgia winters and proper iced tea, but there's no reason her characters can't enjoy those things.
Beth also enjoys giving presentations on Victorian death and mourning traditions as well as Victorian Spiritualism. She has been a volunteer at an historic cemetery, a ghost tour guide and a paranormal investigator. Right now she's chronicling the best spooky spots around Europe.
I received a free copy from Tantor Audio and voluntarily reviewed it.
This audiobook contains both the book Poisoning at the Party and the novella Headless at Halloween. So I decided to review both separately in this review.
Poisoning at the Party review: I was so excited to be back in the city of Nightmare. This is one of my favorite paranormal cozy mystery series and I couldn't wait to continue the series. I had a great time listening to this book. I love hearing about Olivia's daily life and all the characters she interacts with. This series is just so good in every regard from the characters to the mysteries and the paranormal elements. I can't recommend it enough to fans of the genre.
I like how each book in this series has a separate mystery, but there are also overarching plot lines like the missing Baxter, Olivia and Damien's powers and relationship as well as plot lines related to the various side characters we learn more of throughout the series.
This book had an interesting mystery. A temporary worker at the sanctuary gets killed and Olivia gets on the case. There are multiple suspects and motives and it kept me guessing. I was quite happy with the resolution, it was a nice reveal and I liked how Olivia figured things out and even used her powers along the way. I thought it was clever how an early clue came back and be helpful at the end. I also like the big role the paranormal elements plays in the mystery and the story in general.
I love the found family theme this series has. Olivia has such an amazing group of friends around her. In this book we see more of so many of the characters. I liked how Mama and Lucy are part of the story again as well as the various characters who work at the sanctuary like Clara, Zack, Mori and more. I especially liked learning more about Damien's powers and seeing his connection with Olivia deepen. I also liked how there is more about Malcolm in this book and it finally gets revealed what type of supernatural he is, which was so interesting to finally learn that and it was not what I had expected.
I really like the narrator for this series, she does such a great job with all the different voices and she really brings the characters to life with the way she narrates them.
To summarize: I really liked being back in the town of Nightmare. I just love this series and it's one of my favorite paranormal cozy mystery series. I like reading more about Olivia and the awesome group of friends she has around her. The mystery was a good one and kept me guessing. I liked the resolution and the way Olivia figured things out. I also like the way the paranormal plays such a big role in the mystery and the story as a whole. I was excited to learn more about the characters like Damien's powers as well as finding out which type of supernatural Malcolm is.
Headless at Halloween review: I was excited to have this novella included in the audiobook, I hadn't listened to a book before this which included a novella and thought it was fun it was included so I could listen to it as well. Headless at Halloween is one of most well done cozy mystery novellas I've read. I was afraid it would feel rushed due to the shorter length, but despite the mystery progressing faster than in the full length books it never felt rushed.
The novella has the same vibes as the full length books, just a bit shorter. There is again a mystery, but also plenty of fun scenes involving Olivia and the plenty of side character. Maybe make an appearance and I enjoyed seeing Nightmare prepare for and celebrate Halloween.
The mystery was a good one, it kept me guessing and then I manage to figure out who the murderer was shortly before Olivia did. It's always fun when that happens, a certain clue toward the end made things fall on it's place and it was the same reasoning Olivia used to figure it out. I appreciated how Olivia got involved in the mystery and used her powers to help her find clues. I also liked how she's the one to figure it out and resolve it. I liked seeing everything fell on it's place and find out the way and how.
To summarize: This was a fun novella set in the Nightmare, Arizona series. I liked this novella and it was so well written, it never felt rushed despite the mystery progressing a bit faster. I liked how there was a solid mystery that kept me guessing as well as plenty of fun scenes of Olivia with the side characters and spending time in town. I manage to figure out who the murderer was shortly before Olivia did and it was satisfying to be able to figure it out. I liked seeing Nightmare prepare for and celebrate Halloween. All in all a fun Halloween themed novella set in this series and I look forward to the next book.
This series is pretty fun. Damien has come a long way and is open to learning about his magic. Now there’s a murder that doesn’t look like a murder and it’s a race to see who the culprit is since the victim was not very likeable. The characters are quirky, fun, and it’s a found paranormal family. Overall. A good read.
Another fun mystery set in Nightmare, Arizon, and the Sanctuary at Halloween, but this time set a little outside of town at a neighboring farm. I loved being able to leave the Sanctuary for a little and see a little more of the town and the mystery was solid, with plenty of suspects and an interesting conclusion. Where this series excels, though, is in the community of the Sanctuary itself and the variety of paranormals who inhabit it; I love learning more about the residents and their gifts as well as the mystery of Damien’s powers and his father’s disappearance. This is a great series but start at the beginning to get the full story.
"Poisoning at the Party" is Book 5 of the Nightmare, Arizona Paranormal Cozy Mysteries, written so beautifully by Beth Dolgner. This is one of my favorite series. I am NOT a fan of vampire and werewolf books (I must be one of the handful of people who are not lovers of the Twilight series), but this is not your normal paranormal series. This series has EVERYTHING: you have your conjurer, vampires, werewolf, gargoyle, fairies, witches (3 generations of ladies . . . from what looks like a little girl of ten (Maida), to a woman in her twenties, to the elderly granny-type), people with telekinesis, and many others. Each individual paranormal character is unique. They each are funny, serious, playful, and dramatic. You have Felipe, a chupacabra, better known for sucking goat's blood in Latin America, an animal resembling an ugly dog. Then, you have Mama, the wonderful owner of the Cowboy's Corral Motel, who is psychic. She happens to be the sister to Lucille, a woman who disappeared some 40 years earlier and was also psychic. Lucille is Damien Shackleford's mother, and Damien runs the Nightmare, Arizona Haunted House Sanctuary, since his father, Baxter Shackleford disappeared about 8 months ago. Olivia, a new member in town as of Book 1, seems to have conjuring abilities. Damien has paranormal abilities of his own, which are revealed in Book 5. A seance reveals that it will take both Olivia's and Damien's paranormal abilities to find Baxter, and maybe even Lucille. Then, there is Mama's little 10-year-old granddaughter, Lucy, who can see a ghost girl at her school. So much happened in this episode.
This particular book is about the death of a fairy that is ruled as a heart attack by the police department. However, when Olivia discovers some key evidence that the victim had colloidal silver in her body, a substance known to kill fairies, she and Damien, along with several of the paranormals from the Haunted House Sanctuary, help crack the identity of the killer. This book should have been titled "Poisoning at the Festival" instead of "Party." The murder took place on a farm with a corn maze during a pre-Halloween event that is held annually.
I am absolutely in love with Damien Shackleford, and if Olivia doesn't want him, I'll take him off her hands. LOL! Ha ha ha ha!😁😂😅. This is important to mention about Damien, Olivia, Mama, and every other character, paranormal or not, seem like real live people, and not just characters in a book. I gave this episode, as well as all the books in this series, 5 big fat stars.
I received an advanced reader copy via BookFunnel, and this is my totally voluntary and honest review.
"Poisoning at the Party" by Beth Dolgner is book five in the "Nightmare, Arizona" series. This series just gets better and better with each book. Olivia has to work with Annabelle for the Fall Festival, and she notices that Annabelle will only take the tickets of decent looking guys in their 20s and 30s, and then Olivia has to do most of the work. While at the corn maze, Annabelle ends up murdered and Olivia works on figuring out what really happened to her. I absolutely love Damien and learning more about him with each book. I also love Olivia and the different things that she has happen around her that she seems to always end up in the middle of. This was an awesome read, and I moved right on to the next book in the series.
I loved this book and the more and more we get to know the characters and the mystery behind the disappearance the more I love it. This is book five and the main mystery does get solved but as there is a long running mystery, that we learn a little bit about with each book, I would highly recommend that you read the books in order or just read them, they are that good. I am really glad to find out this series is also coming out as an audio books. Another series to collect in my library, so I can relive the fun. I love the whacky and unusual group of friends that make up the Sanctuary and the core characters and I always spend the entire book hoping non of them are involved in the murder. This might be a supernatural series set in a haunted Sanctuary and at Halloween but there is nothing frightening or scary about this book, it is just a very good mystery. The mystery had a number of suspects to keep you guessing and I liked the fact that only the supernatural's knew it was murder and had to solve it in order to stop a killer going free. Off to get the first audio book to listen too while waiting for the next book. Halloween is a busy time of year for the supernatural's at Nightmare Sanctuary Haunted House and they need to hire on extra help for the call festival but not everybody is happy to see them. Annabelle a fairy caused problems last year and it quickly becomes apparent she hasn't changed. That is until her dead body is discovered in the maze. With no sign of trauma the police are quick to rule it natural causes but Olivia and her supernatural friends know differently. Olivia must work out which of her suspects knew she was a fairy and that silver was deadly to her? Because otherwise it looks like only a supernatural could be the killer and that means one of her friends. I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Another great story in this series! Even if you have not yet read all of the stories in this series you can follow along with no issues. Each story gives you sufficient info to understand the main characters and the basic interactions. The author does a wonderful job of mixing the new characters into the storyline so they blend in and you can follow along. Yes there are ongoing story lines that continue from one book to the next but new readers should be able to run with what they are given and enjoy how everything comes together. I really love the way the fairy in this story is described. You can really get a sense of what she was like. I did feel a bit sorry for all of her ex-boyfriends. Olivia does a great job of pushing until she gets answers about the poisoning. Which I really loved. She wants justice for all victims, regardless of how many people didn't like the individual. It's great to see that Olivia and Damien are working on trying to find out how and what they can do with their powers. Damien has been in the dark about his powers too long. And Olivia, being fairly new to Nightmare, had no idea she had powers before arriving. If you enjoy reading paranormal cozy mysteries this is one you'll want. I received a free copy of this story and the comments are mine.
Halloween is coming and Olivia Kendrick is extra busy at the Nightmare Sanctuary Haunted House, as well as helping out at the annual Nightmare Fall Festival at a nearby farm. When the annoying seasonal worker, Annabelle is found dead in the corn maze at the festival’s kickoff party, Olivia is all set to investigate the death, except the police say it was natural causes and not murder. Olivia was nearby and heard the murder happen, and then the police give her a clue that means nothing to them, but would cause harm to a fairy, which is what Annabelle is. There is no shortage of people that dislike Annabelle, since she’s stolen boyfriends from two different women in town, stolen a job from another disgruntled person, and does nothing but flirt and bask in the attention of men instead of doing her job. During the course of Olivia's investigation, she’s also encouraging Damien to explore his supernatural abilities, and learns more about some of her co-workers. So now more of the quirky supernatural characters in the series are gaining depth and showing more of their personalities, as Olivia is gaining more respect from her new friends, as well as some of the townspeople. I’ve really been enjoying this series and I think Nightmare, Arizona is an unusual little town with lots of interesting characters, where something strange is always happening.
It's always interesting learning more about the supernatural creatures in this universe. I feel like we get more of a deep dive into a couple this time.
I'm not big on faeries so this one wasn't the most interesting to me, but it was still a good whodunnit!
Our main character and Damien were less over-dramatic in this book, which was nice. We're diving deeper into Damien's history and powers as well.
Still not a lot on the missing father and mother front, other than her speaking through ghosts to encourage her son, Damien. It's definitely a slow moving background plot.
Malcolm's history reveal was interesting. I've already heard the tales of how one can become a skin walker in the way he became one. The author did not do her research though, otherwise she would know that you NEVER say it's name.
It's definitely a darker story than I expected to read in a cozy. I do find it amazing he was able to eventually get in control of himself and live a pretty regular life.
It’s almost Halloween and Nightmare is getting ready; the Haunted House is busier than ever and there is harvest festival at a nearby farm complete with a corn maze. The Haunted House has hired some temporary workers to handle the busiest time of the year, most of the temps have worked there previously. On Olivia’s first shift with a temp, she is constantly told about Annabelle, a fairy that seems to attract trouble wherever she goes, as well as being a terrible employee. Annabelle seems to be living up to her name, not paying attention to what she is doing (too busy flirting), getting into arguments and being generally annoying. Then Annabelle is found dead in the corn maze, supposedly dead of a heart problem. Of course, Olivia doesn’t believe it and starts investigating along with her friends. At the same time, she is working with Damien to figure out his powers and how to control them. This has an interesting mystery with lots of background about the victim, suspects and some of her friends. There are some interesting interactions, a great story and a few surprises. Well worth reading. These books are interesting, easy, quick, fun reads.
It's closing in on Halloween and the Sanctuary is busier than ever. Which means some temps have stepped in to help lighten the load. Unfortunately, one of the temps is a self-absorbed fairy who seems to have stepped on a lot of toes in her short time in Nightmare. So when she ends up dead in a maze, there are PLENTY of suspects.
As you might expect, Olivia is on the case. On the downside, the police think Annabelle died of natural causes since they're unaware of the supernatural goings on around town. And that Annabelle was a fairy. Regardless, they aren't doing any investigating, so it's all on Olivia to figure out what happened.
Meanwhile, Olivia's trying to talk Damien into exploring his power, but the guy has A LOT of emotional baggage to get past regarding what he might be capable of. Fortunately for Damien, Olivia has patience and perseverance on her side and she's not afraid to use them.
A little case of murder, a maze that Olivia doesn't love, busy time at the haunt, and a slew of friends who absolutely believe Olivia can get the investigation job done. *thumbs up*
Another great haunting mystery As Halloween and the Fall Festival draw near the Sanctuary needs some extra help. One of these is Annabelle, a fairy who was an extra the previous year, and one who is loved or hated. When she is found dead in the opening night corn maze Olivia thinks it was a murder but the local police believe it to be from natural causes. Olivia is not so sure and with the help of her cowokers and friends from the haunted house she does some investigating of her own. At the same time she is trying to understand her powers and figure out Damien's abilities. Another well written paranormal mystery in the Nightmare, Arizona series. The characters continue to be developed and expanded as we learn more about each of them. I received an addvance copy of this book to review.
I think this book was by far my favorite of the series so far. We were able to see more of the characters back stories. I loved that we were able to get to know more than just Olivia and Damien.
I do love seeing Olivia and Damien grow just as much. I get so excited when Damien is able to explore what he is when he is most comfortable. He is always so surprised when he is able to see that he isn't the monster he thinks he is. I hope that as Damien continues to explore himself and his powers he is able to be less brash as a person. Maybe at some point he will be able to be a more approachable person.
So much growth happened in this book and I'm so excited to see where it goes in the next book!
The latest adventure in Nightmare, Arizona is a hard to put down page turner. Along with the usual collection of unique citizens of the town, some temporary residents have come to help out for the town's busiest seasons: Halloween. When one ends up dead, it's declared natural causes. Olivia and her friends know there's more involved than natural causes, but proving what really happened is more challenging than usual with many suspects and few clues. Beth Dolgner has created a fun paranormal world in Nightmare, Arizona. The characters are some of the most fun and unusual supernatural beings and the stories genuinely entertaining. Stop in for a visit - you'll enjoy the adventure!
Audiobook: I enjoyed this story immensely. I was entertained by all the quirky and unusual characters which populated this story and the series. I liked Olivia Kendrick and her determination to solve the crime even though the police didn't recognize the case as a murder. I admired the complexity of the mystery. I agreed with the concept that using magical powers takes practice. I appreciated the inclusion of the novella which showcased Olivia's crime solving abilities. I enjoyed Petrea Burchard's narration as her skill added to my enjoyment of the story. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.
When a temporary worker is found dead in the Fall Festival maze, Olivia and her coworkers are quick to investigate. The police don’t think it’s a murder, but the supernaturals in town know better, after all, it was a supernatural who was killed!
Secrets are being exposed in Nightmare, as Olivia and her friends start to learn about their own abilities, and their pasts (and others). It’s an enjoyable story, with plenty of interactions with the Nightmare crew, a murder to solve, and a few mysteries about abilities to top it all off. This one is a good read for the fans on Nightmare Az, and for paranormal cosy mystery lovers.
This is an action packed paranormal mystery with so many things happening. The storyline is full of threads. We have the murder of Annabelle or Olivia and Damien to get to the bottom of as well as the continued search for Baxter, Damien's father and maybe even solve the disappearance of Lucille who disappeared 40 years ago who was Mama's sister. Can all of this be solved? This is a page turner that once you begin the book you just can't put it down. This is the fifth book in the series but not only do I recommend this book, but I recommend the whole series. I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
I enjoyed this story, Olivia gets caught up in a murder again, a horrible fairy who the men love, she teams up with Damian whom she is developing quite a few romantic feelings for, while the others are still dissing him, but she learns more about Damian and she manages to work out who dunnit. I really enjoy these stories, the author says she likes Malcolm best but Damian is probably my favourite, along with Mama of course. Little Lucy is getting grips with her ability as she is gradually learning that she can see dead people. She even gets to help out at the haunted house. I can't wait to go on to read book six.
When an unlikeable character turns up dead in a maze it's up to Olivia to make things right. But the police in Nightmare believe that Annabelle's death was nothing out of the ordinary. Olivia's gut is telling her something else happened. This was such a fun mystery to solve with all of the quirky characters in the book. There is also some insight on Damion's developing magical skills.
I love how at the end of this book, you get to hear the Headless at Halloween, a short story that's part of this series. This headless mystery was a spooky mystery read that I immensely enjoyed!
A very special thanks to Tantor Audio for the gifted copy.
Every book in this series just makes me love the town of Nightmare, Arizona, more and more! This latest has poor Olivia trying to solve a murder that isn’t supposed to be a murder. We are taken on a fun journey with her, her friends, and some new friends. Not only that, but we are also slowly learning more about the subplot about Damien’s parents, the members of the haunted house, and Olivia’s powers. I just love this fun, well-written, entertaining series, and I can’t wait to read the next one! Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I’m enjoying these books. They are paranormal but oh so normal. Pretty much set in a previous asylum that’s been made over into a year round haunted house where various paranormal people live. Each story revolves around the main character Olivia and Damien who are trying to develop their powers. Each book there is usually a death that Olivia becomes involved in solving and usually using her powers. I look forward to reading the next in this series.
It's the Halloween season and the town is jumping with tourists enjoying the cooler weather and the fun events taking place at the spooky old town. Readers learn a bit more about the folk who live at the Sanctuary and work at the Haunt. We spend time with fairy Clara and her sister, and Annabelle, a spoiled and selfish fairy who has a thing for stealing boyfriends. Did you know fairies can't stand silver? We also spend time with Malcolm, and Olivia and Damien work on their powers. Again, a fun and fast read.
It is Fall Festival time in Nightmare and this brings back seasonal workers to town. Most of the workers are welcomed back with open arms but one is someone they had hoped to never see again – Annabell. When Annabell is found dead in the maze there is a long line of suspects since most of the town did not care for her – she had made a lot of enemies the previous year. Nightmare is full of secrets and the most intriguing ones are about Damien’s parents – Baxter and Lucille. The author is doing a great job with how she is revealing the secrets of the town and the paranormals!
All the (young, male) customers love her, but the temp worker has managed to irk most of the other people in Nightmare. When she dies in the Nightmare Fest corn maze there’s no shortage of suspects. Olivia needs to solve this one because the police don’t think it was murder, but Olivia knows things aren’t always what they seem in Nightmare.
Damien’s story continues to build as he and Olivia continue to explore their own powers.
Great story, love to continue to learn about the citizens of Nightmare with each book.
I listened to this book on audio format. I’m really enjoying this series. I’ve found that cozy mysteries and are heavy on the magic and paranormal can often veer into the land of crappy writing. Not this one. There is an over arching story involving the protagonist and another main character, coupled with a new murder mystery in each book. The reader also gets new insights and backstories of a few of the supernatural characters in each book. The whodunnit element of this novel had be guessing with a nice twist thrown in.
Olivia is now having to find out who murdered the new fairy in town, and she needs a lot of help from her friends. I love watching the relationship between Olivia and Damien evolve. I also love finding out so much about Olivia's friends and how they all manage to help Olivia find out who murdered Annabelle, despite the police believing her death wasn't a murder! This ongoing series just keeps getting better & better!
Can I move to Nightmare, please? I love these characters so much. As we delve deeper into the series we are being drawn to learning and understanding each characters background. The development of their comradery is palatable and easy to be envied as they very subtlety support each other in solving the mystery and with personal close to the vest issues. The mystery boasts excellent twists and an ending you won't see coming. A must read addition to the top of your TBR list.
I enjoyed reading this book and the more and more we get to know the characters and the mystery behind the disappearance the more I love it. This is book five and the main mystery does get solved but as there is a long running mystery, that we learn a little bit about with each book. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I received this book as a Free ARC copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
Ms. Dolgner has provided another fun adventure in Nightmare, Arizona. It's almost Halloween and Sanctuary Haunted House is gearing up for larger crowds by hiring temporary help. Olivia and friends are also recruited to work at the annual Nightmare Fall Festival. And then there's a murder and Olivia is once again investigating. Twists, turns, several dubious suspects and a fast-paced plot kept me turning the pages. This series is fun from the first page to the last page.
