Insightful and humorous, these short essays cover the waterfront of topics for readers who find the English language Words lost and gained, the “Dictionary Wars,” Redundancy, Greek debt, Ink Horn terms, Mondegreens, Words as madeleines, Silent Knights, and 4-letter words, are but a few examples. The author uses poetry, literature, and notable quotes to illustrate. He urges readers not to commit “lexicide” but to help keep words alive by using them, and to invent their own words when necessary.
I found this book in a free little library at a park. Inside the front cover it’s addressed to Sue, directly from the author. I have no idea who Sue is, or if she read and/or enjoyed the book. However, I know that I did! It was such a fun, quick read, like reading a myriad of fun facts about words. This book will stay in the library my partner and I are building, and prompts me to purchase a dictionary so I can explore words I don’t know and words I think I know!!
