This audiobook dramatization is an exquisite rendering of a classic that has delighted readers for generations. Audible did an amazing job on the production and brought the world of Avonlea to life with flair. I felt transported to another time and place. From the moment I began to listen, I knew this was special and my expectations were exceeded by a mile.
I’ve often considered this to be one of those stories that is the total package because it appeals to a wide range of ages and depending on where I’ve been in my own life I’ve pulled different items of importance from the narrative. There’s beautiful yet, accessible writing. The story evokes a plethora of emotions from laughter to tears. Anne is a memorable character with her positive attitude, huge heart, vibrant imagination, and vulnerabilities.
I spent hours as a child within Avonlea and what a gift it was to revisit the familiar story in a fresh manner.
Marilla Cuthbert and her brother, Matthew, decide that they are getting old and need help with the farm. They make arrangements to adopt a boy who is old enough to help with the chores and can be taught how to take care of the farm by Matthew. But the train doesn't drop off a boy. Anne, an eleven-year-old, red-headed orphan, is sitting at the train depot, waiting for the Cuthberts to take her home.
Every year I try to fit in a couple of classics that I never got to read when I was in school. I saw the audiobook of this book and decided to give it a try. Anne is a very dramatic kid. I couldn't help smiling at some of the things she said. I can see why the Cuthberts decided not to send her back to the orphanage. She definitely grows on you.
This was a full-cast recording with different actors for each voice. I loved it! It was so easy to figure out who was talking. I also loved the surround-sound. You could hear horses clomping, birds singing, crickets chirping...it added so much to the story. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
Anne Shirley is an iconic Canadian character and I have enjoyed reading and listening to this first book of the series a few times. In this rendition, Audible Originals has used an all-star Canadian cast: Sandra Oh, Catherine O'Hara, Victor Garber and Michela Luci, with Megan Follows (who will forever be my favourite on-screen Anne) directing the production.
The entire cast was perfect, and I became so engaged in the story that I forgot the very popular roles these actors have portrayed in the past. This is no small feat when you have Schitt's Creek's 'Moira Rose' voicing Marilla, Tony award-winning Victor Garber voicing Matthew and Grey's Anatomy/Killing Eve's Sandra Oh narrating. And new-to-me Michela Luci did a fantastic job of bringing Anne's spirit and endearing nature to the listener.
I have thoroughly enjoyed these Audible Original productions which are free to Audible members. The background sounds (doors closing, leaves scrunching, background voices...) add another layer to this classic story and make you feel like you're listening to an audio play.
Whether you've read Anne of Green Gables fifty times or have yet to meet this precocious, loquacious and memorable character who is unapologetically and refreshingly herself, I'd highly recommend this amazing audio production. I have yet to read the entire Anne series, so I hope that Audible continues to produce the rest of the AoGG series in this format and with this cast to share Anne's adventures with her many, many fans.
Confession: I have lived on PEI for 9 Years, And I have never read/listened/watched anything Anne of Green Gables 🙈
When I came across this version I decided to give it a go- and it was so truly delightful & whimsical (the production of the audiobook AND the story). Kinda' mad that I haven't read this story, but at the same time happy I got to experience the new story (to me) via this audiobook :)
I loved this way more than I should have. I generally don't enjoy dramatised audiobooks with ensemble casts because it just doesn't feel enough like a book, but this was perfect.
Michela Luci was brilliant as Anne.
Maybe there's some nostalgia from the tv show when I was a kid, but I'd deffs recommend this.
2023: What a fun way to revisit a favorite story. This is well done by the full cast - with extra sounds and such to embellish the story. Sometimes the extra sounds are a bit loud and make the characters hard to hear; however, I would not be sad at all if they continued on to make the whole series this way!
This is my first time reading the classic story, Anne of Green Gables, by Lucy Maud Montgomery. The book has been periodically showing up on my radar when browsing social media. The tipping point for me was reading an email newsletter from author Carley Fortune in which she described her book releasing in 2024, This Summer Will Be Different, as a tribute to Anne of Green Gables. In her newsletter, Carley also mentioned the new Audible Original production of Anne of Green Gables. Okay universe, you can stop nudging me…I’m going to read it now.
To my pleasant surprise, Audible offered this new audiobook production of Anne of Green Gables free to members! With one easy click, this book was added to my library. I was immediately struck by this wonderful story. I understand why so many readers express significant love for Anne and the gorgeous setting of Prince Edward Island. I truly adored Anne and her wild adventures.
Audible’s production of Anne of Green Gables is amazing! It is extremely well produced in Dolby Atmos with perfect sound effects and a narrator for each character. I was impressed with the celebrity line up of narrators: Sandra Oh, Catherine O’Hara, Victor Garber, and Michela Luci.
I truly loved the book and this audiobook experience. If you haven’t yet read Anne of Green Gables or are interested in a re-read, I highly recommend this Audible Original only available on Audible.
I have photos, videos, and additional information that I'm unable to include here. It can all be found on my blog, in the link below. A Book And A Dog
Loved this adaptation of a Canadian Classic. Between the voice acting and the background noises/sound effects one becomes absorbed in to Anne’s glorious world.
I'm a big Anne of Green Gables fan ... loved the original series, read the whole thing (multiple times). LOVED the mini-series production too. I'll admit I have not gotten around to giving the new Netflix adaptation a try.
Schitt's Creek was a recent watch, but Moira is SUCH a unique character/voice, that there wasn't any carryover, even knowing it was the same actress. Victor Garber is most familiar to me from Alias (a while back), but I will always have the mini-series Matthew in my heart! I'm not remembering him saying "oh, well ..." as much as in this production. While I'm also a huge Megan Follows fan as Anne, the gal here did great. In a little online discussion, someone said she looked too old ... but she did not sound too old, she was great!
Unlike other graphic audio, this had narration ... I'm familiar with Sandra Oh from Grey's Anatomy (and I watched Killing Eve) ... if I didn't know it was her, I would not have recognized her voice at all. Had to really look for it. I was glad for the basic narration here and there, it is needed in a work like this.
This covered most of the book that I remembered ... I didn't quite feel the relationship building between Anne and Gilbert, Gilbert didn't seem nearly as large a role in this production as in others.
I was happy to find this included in AudiblePlus, so I was able to access it for free with my membership. As much as I loved it, I don't know that I would have wanted to spend a credit on it (a little over 5 hours).
Rating the classic story alone would be an easy five stars, as anyone who knows me would already predict. I'm strictly rating this performance.
While it was fun and entertaining to hear a full cast narrate the characters and hear all the background noises and music, I felt that way too much was abridged out. It took away so much of the charm of the book for me. I think Victor Garber did a fantastic job as Matthew, he was the standout actor for me. Michela Luci did very well as Anne. Catherine O'Hara disappointed me a little. I felt like her dryness was so perfect for Marilla as a character, but she didn't get the chance to employ it as often as she should have. She just read most of her flat, terse lines and was given very few of the ones that show her sense of humor.
All in all, I think this is a great introduction for people not sure if they want to commit to the entire story because it's so short a listen, but it's not a terribly faithful adaptation in terms of the wonder and humor of the original.
Anne of Green Gables became one of my top books which I like to come back to. Funny that in school I didn't like this book but those were different times. Since I came back to this story a year ago, I fell in love with the story and characters. So when I saw that audible created an audiobook dramatised version of it, I had to reach for it and I'm happy that I did. Once again I had been transported to Green Gables. Every voice actor had been perfectly chosen. Anne was just how I saw her when reading the book. I must admit that each time I'm reading it, I'm enchanted by her character and her bright imagination. How, after difficult years without parents, she found joy in nature and her imagination. It is truly a role model of all times, as even when she was growing up and learning, she was still a wonderful person through and through. This audiobook is definitely worth listening. And this book is always a cosy read.
This is one of my favourite novels ever! I've been meaning to try this dramatized full-cast production for so long. Why did I wait this long? It is absolutely FANTASTIC! Gosh, I so love Anne Shirley! ☺️
This is a star studded cast. Marillia, is portrayed by the legendary Catherine O'Hara. Matthew, by the fabulous Victor Garber and Anne is portrayed brilliantly by the wonderful Michela Luci. If you adore Anne of Green Gables this audio is a must!
What a terrific experience listening to this was. I’m not a huge audiobook, person, but this is altogether different. It’s like listening to a movie rather than someone just reading a novel orally. The addition of the sound effects and music make it immersive and having a cast like Catherine O’Hara, Victor Garber, and Sandra Oh, make it a veritable who’s who. Megan Follows directed and no one knows Anne like Megan. I highly recommend.
This was always my favourite book (and series of books by extension), so I was interested to see how an abridged version with a full cast would work. Generally it was excellent but there were numerous parts with “background speech” integral to the plot that were barely audible and unfortunately that detracted from the overall experience. I hope if the team behind this adaptation continues with the series they take that onboard as I have seen numerous other comments on the same issue.
Book 1 of series: Audiobook… (hoping Audible will make more) This is the Audible Original dramatized version with Sandra Oh as one of the narrators.: I thought this might be to young for me but it absolutely isn’t. It’s a well crafted story and performance that kept me glued it. (and I’ve been having a hard time sticking with most things lately. I really hope they make more with these narrators. I doubt it though.
This abridged adaptation of the beloved classic "Anne of Green Gables" was a quick listen and was pleasantly enjoyable. Obviously quite a bit had to be left out to reduce the story by about half, but it flows fairly well. The actors chosen for the main roles were very good, particularly Catherine O'Hara as Marilla. The sound effects and musical score added a theatrical quality (as intended). Occasionally, when a character was supposed to be speaking from a distance, it was rather hard to make out the dialogue. I noticed this mainly with Matthew. I also felt Michela Luci was perfect for Anne at the beginning, but her voice didn't mature enough as Anne grew older, so at the end she sounded maybe a little too childish. As an adaptation, it's good, but not great. I have no regrets about spending 5 enjoyable hours with Anne Shirley.
Absolutely enamored with this Audible Original! The voice actors transported me into the world of Anne of Green Gables, and the addition of Dolby Atmos enhanced the experience to sheer perfection. Whether you're a newcomer to Anne's adventures or a seasoned reader who's delved into her story countless times, this recording is an absolute must-listen. Prepare to rediscover the timeless joy of Anne's tale in a whole new light.
The audible adaption of Anne of Green Gables made me cry ugly tears while driving in the car. It captured Anne, Marilla, Matthew and all our Avonlea kindred spirits so well. Can we hope for a continuation with Anne of Avonlea next? I loved LM Montgomery's series from start to finish though arguably Anne of Green Gables is the most popular, the rest of the books in these series are strong and lovely and definitely worthy of an audible adaptation.
This book holds many precious memories from childhood, and they did a good job with this audio play. I found the voice of the actress playing Anne rather high-pitched, which threw me off since the two actresses who've played her on TV didn't have such high-pitched voices. There were also parts in this that were different from what I remember, but that could be the TV movies and series making me misremember. I'll just have to reread the book!
Such a lovely story. I have no idea why I had never read the story before. Anne is a lively, lovely orphan girl who is adopted by the sibling Marilla and Matthew. Anne brings chaos, laughter and some challenges to their lives. I really enjoyed listening to the story and the ensemble did a great job.
Delightful beyond words! Catherine O'Hara was the most incredible Marilla Cuthbert there ever was, she was even better than I imagined. And Sandra Oh was the loveliest narrator! The sound effects and mixing of this were well done too. I love this story and these characters so dearly, and I definitely teared up at parts. So good.
A must listen for all Anne people. My favourite was that it was directed by Megan Follows and it felt like it. Catherine O’Hara as Marilla was genius and I loved remembering that it was Sandra Oh narrating from time to time. I hope they plan to continue !
this was such a great audiobook!! I loved that it was narrated by Canadian actors who had such great performances, and the music and sound effects added so much to the story. it was such a wholesome and heartfelt book and I loved every bit of it!
