Feara is a Black indie author and illustrator, passionately pursuing writing. For countless years Feara has suffered with social anxiety. In an effort to alleviate this anxiety, she immersed herself in the world of theatre, writing, and art, and although she has triumphed over major challenges, she still confronts it to this day.
Feara's name is a result of the alter ego character she crafted at the age of 9 in order to embody the antithesis of her own self; a fearless, strong, and enduring character. She uses this alter ego to empower her to work through her fear of failure and disappointment, thus the name ‘Feara’.
She considers her childhood in Japan after living there for a while as a child and gets inspiration from it. She wishes to see more representation of Black and Asian characters as the main characters in various genres.
Though it started off as a hobby, Feara enjoys writing and wants at least one person in the world to enjoy her stories.
This was cute. I was intrigued by this b/c saw that it was an AMMC & BFMC . It’s not often that you see this dynamic in a love story.
I feel like this book started off in what felt like the middle of the story, I wish there was more back story of Shala’s life living in the woods alone or how she got captured by Young Ji’s guards.
The dialogue was a little choppy and it was hard for me to understand who was saying what at times. But I overall enjoyed this story.
It’s not a HEA, it just ends abruptly so I’m hopeful that we’ll get more from this author in the future to have a better conclusion to the story.
This book had SO MUCH potential but ultimately fell short due to poor execution.
The writing felt choppy, with jarring, disconnected paragraphs that made the flow almost nonexistent. If this were a movie, it would be one that constantly cuts to black. In fact, it feels like the author approached it more as a screenplay than a novel, relying heavily on “showing” rather than “telling,” which did NOT work in this format.
The MCs had promise, especially Shala. I really enjoyed the idea of a strong, silent FMC—something we don’t see every day—but the writing and editing didn’t do her justice. That said, she still gave me some funny moments. The scene where she slapped Young Ji after he said they share everything (so she wanted him to share her punishment) actually made me chuckle. It’s moments like that which kept me engaged, even as the rest of the story faltered.
The book was packed with great ideas and a clear vision, but none of it fully came together. It’s frustrating because I could SEE where the author wanted to go, but the writing style and lack of refinement held them back. It felt rushed -yet so slow, but, it was in desperate need of a solid edit.
Despite all this, I’m intrigued enough to pick up Volume II. The concept and characters still have potential, and I’m hoping the author takes the time to rally and deliver a more polished and cohesive sequel. Really try to get an editor and—I mean this as respectfully as possible—invest in a writer’s course.
terrible. absolutely positively awful. the writing was so choppy, i literally kept saying "what?!" out loud. it felt like it was supposed to give anime dramatics, but it failed. it made me question myself and if i just needed to read it in a different mood, setting, or lifetime. the answer is no. it is terrible, no matter what. nothing made sense, at all. the story didn't flow, at all. they're supposedly in love, but it doesn't give that, because when and how? there's a lot of intense words about loving the other, but no evidence of a connection. shala's incessant need to say "i hate talking" while LITERALLY NEVER SHUTTING UP, is insane. literally, she says she doesn't like to talk mid-monologue, every time. the words "nodded" and "sighed" officially annoy my soul (nodded was overused in another book i read this year, so that one is extra annoying now). the author used their thesaurus, honey. like, every single word they could find was used and some of the adjectives and adverbs were way too forced. i have no clue what the purpose of this story was, and i wanted so badly to read both of these because they seemed interesting with the inspiration of the story, but it's a no for me, dawg. i love supporting artists of color, but baby.. whoooo was the editor, and why did they allow this to be released? (i lowkey hope to find out this is not a black woman's work) yikes, i cannot stand leaving poor reviews. might delete.
This book was one of those books that stood out from soooo many! This book had me in a trance from the beginning it’s soooo good! 😩😩❤️❤️❤️ I’m so happy I came to read this beautiful well-written gem! 💎💎 It’s absolutely nothing I would change about this read it’s just perfect!!! This was a refreshing, well rounded, emotionally charged book I have ever read. The purity of both lovers and how they were as a person but most of all with one another was just remarkably humbling and emotionally fiercely sweet! I can go on and on about this amazing book! Feara you really did it with this one!!!🥹❤️❤️❤️😩😩❤️💎💎 I was lost for words when the book ended for I didn’t know it was done😩🤣❤️🥲 Will it be a book 2?! Do anyone know?! I truly hope so!!❤️ I would encourage any and everyone to go read this book right away!!
I devoured this book. . . Not because it was good. Because I was hoping it'd get better.
The Writing. The writing was clunky very clunky, consequently making the plot difficult to follow. I did not believe the characters felt anything for each other. Not even attraction. I'm not sure if this is because every ounce of dialog was exposition overload or what? It's written in third person - which is fine - but I always thought writing in third person would mean the reader would get a detailed look into how all the characters were feeling, what they were thinking, their intentions, fears etc etc. But uh. . . . You do not get that from this book. I think it could have worked better told in first person and from just one of the characters. I didn't feel like I was losing or gaining anything extra by it being in third person.
The Romance (?). The moment Shala and Young Ji admit their feelings for each other to each other was so anticlimactic. Having gotten to know the characters, I didn't expect any sort of grand gesture or sweet words. But I expected more than just a, "I like you. You like me. That's cool 👍." Immediately after their confessions there's a page break then next thing you know Young Ji is in the armory talking to some dude. Are you for real?! A lot of scenes ended this way.
I see quite a few higher ratings on this book. People are saying its "cute" "romantic" "intriguing" and that the world building is amazing. I just don't agree with that. Not once did I think Young Ji and Shala's relationship was "cute" or "romantic". It read like the author was trying to write an intense, passion fueled relationship but. . . . That just didn't happen. Young Ji was quick to admit that he was attracted to Shala but he wouldn't kiss her because that's "too intimate". Okay, fine. sure - I get that. I was on board with that. Shala on the other hand, had no idea how she felt about him. They did the deed, it was. . . Well, reading it was VERY awkward for me. Before the intimacy Shala said she didn't care how she lost her virginity. It was all transactional with Young Ji. Okay, you do you girl. But there was no clear indication that either party was enjoying themselves or not. Phrases like, "Their bodies melted together." was used. And okay, great, fine. But. . . . Were they enjoying themselves? Then in the next chapter Shala is burning with a never before felt desire for him and Young Ji is hot and bothered too. He said that one minute he wanted her body then the next he hated her (fooooor just being antagonistic?). Um. . . What?
There were several scenes in which the characters were making power plays on each other. Shala using her fighting abilities and Young Ji just being the "king" so he can do whatever he wants. I could have been ok with this if it was a consistent theme between the two of them. But it always played out the same way. They'd fight. Shala would pout. Young Ji would scold her. Shala would pout. They'd have sex. Turn the page and it'd be the next day or so many hours later. I just didn't buy it. And, sigh, I really wanted to. You don't get a lot of AM/BW fantasy romances. I was hoping this would be another L.S. Bethel book - just with way more grit and spice. It was not.
The Plot The plot was okay. Again, the clunky writing made it, at times, difficult to follow. Its set an alternate reality so I believed anything regarding the rules of this world. I do think it progressed quickly - and not in a good way. One paragraph Shala has two weeks to fulfil a contract then the next we've fast forward 10 days (!) and its ride or die time. Come again?! What had she been doing all that time? It was moments like this when I thought the author could have snuck in some relationship building between the characters. Even some world building. Heck, I'd take 10 days of Shala talking to tutors and figuring out how to manage her natural hair in all that humidity.
There's no HEA it just sort of stops. It made me question if the author just WANTED there to be a second book when there didn't need to one. I'm curious as to how this series will end, so yeeeeeeah. I'm going to read the next book. Maybe it really will get better.
I gave this book a 4.5 ⭐️ It was such a great read. I love how the author mix the Asian and Black culture and gave it such a seamless plot. The main character Shala caught my whole attention with how much of a badass she is! Young Ji is handsome and wise. The action, the discrimination, the differences in the clans. How women are treated in certain clans over others. It’s a well blended mix of everything. I truly enjoyed everything about this book and can’t wait for book 2!
Feral Kingdom is about a young King named Young Ji ,who is trying to stop his kingdom from going to war with two neighboring kingdoms who want him to pick a side to fight on. His soldiers while in the Forest of Death, finds a young woman name Shala has fighting abilities that can help train his arum to fight in this upcoming war. In exchange to help the other one out, Shala agrees to help train his army in exchange of becoming Young Ji's Consort which offers protection inside his kingdom. As the two get closer together because of the deal they made with each other ,court intrigue, war and mysterious past looms between them.
I found this one thanks to an Instagram ad and decided to check it out which I'm glad I did. All and All I did enjoy this a lot from the characters, plot and setting but the last 20% felt rushed to me. Like the author should have written maybe 10 -20 more pages so certain things would felt rush and happen off screen which it shouldn't been off screen. Other than that I enjoyed it and like the fact it was a short read but could have benefitted with a few more pages especially since it ended with a cliffhanger.. Can't wait for part two.
I really enjoyed this book! AMBW is so rare to find in books that whenever you do find it, you’ve got to read it no matter the genre. This book was fantasy/ alternate reality. I think the world-building was my favorite part of the story which was amazing because worldbuilding will either make or break your story. There was also a map and footnotes to keep you keep track of the places and cultural aspects mentioned in the story. I liked Shala and Young Ji even though there was an insta-love aspect to their relationship. The book follows Shala and Young Ji (both at the same time since it’s 3rd person which took some getting used to) as they work together to secure Young Ji’s kingdom against threats inside and out, while also falling in love. The writing could have used another round of revision but there were no mistakes that got in the way of telling the story. There was also a twist at the end of the book which makes me eager to pick up Volume 2.
I stumbled upon this book in my recommendations and after reading the synopsis and several customer reviews I decided to take a chance and I am so glad I did. From the very beginning I was reeled in like a fish to bait on a hook. The storyline is firing on all cylinders with intrigue, danger, suspense and centuries old Japanese traditions. With a dynamic plot and excellent character development showcasing a strong take no nonsense female and a young King who is steeped in historical conventions but poses a kind and caring soul makes this one a tantalizing read. I remained captivated throughout this gripping tale of love, secrets and deceit. Feara was an unknown author to me but her succinct and well choreographed writing style has made me a new fan and she so deserves her flowers. I loved it and can't wait to read the next installment of this story.
This book was amazing I couldn’t put it down I was cheering, crying and screaming all through out the book! The plot twist in this story had me sitting up in my bed multiple times. I fell hopelessly in love with the prince called Young Ji in this story, the way he has me in a chokehold is insane. The main female character in this story “Shala” was extraordinary she is a warrior that I definitely look up to. I’m so grateful to have read an amazing story like this, I felt like I could truly escape in this book! Now I’m on my way to read book two!!
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Favorite Quote: “when I saw you in the moonlight, I was struck. I couldn’t tell if you were the moon or the stars. No matter which, you were beautiful.” - Young Ji
The stunning cover made me want to check this book out and once I did, I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. I read it in a few hours. Feara's writing style is right up my ally: concise, yet mysterious, fast paced with a few slow moments, and intrigue throughout. Shala and Young Ji's star-crossed love story is timeless. Shala is essentially based on an Agoji warrior (all female clan) who is simply put: a badass. Captured by King Young Ji, they butt heads constantly until they begrudgingly come to respect each other and that respect grows to love. Feara W, idk where you've been all my life, but I am ecstatic to have found you.! I am SO ready for the next installment.
First book from this author and I am a fan! I love the power Shala had and never backed down , she only took a step back or to the side to aide her man! Young ji I love the development and raw growth of going through his past and opening himself up to love and love to a woman who odds were against her. The first boook is settling the tone for the damn goooood battle for the love between these two. Spoiler : for a man whose been in a coma the damn dad sure did jump up and start killing fast ! LOL! Excited to see where Shala and Young Ji path will take them. I hope she takes her crown with bloody hands!
I am usually not one for fantasy/action type books, but this one was perfect. Great pacing, world building was quick and to the point, and every character had substance. I legit got lost in this book when commuting to a doctor’s appointment, so much so that I missed my stop.
It would get 5 stars, but there were some formatting issues and some errors in grammar, but seeing as this is self published I give a lot of grace. It takes a lot to press publish on your art, and I’m glad Feara W did.
This is falling somewhere between a 2.5-3ish ⭐️ rating for me. I felt like the story jumped all over the place and was kind of confused as to what going on at different points of the story. Things seemed to go from 0-100 real quick and not make sense sometimes. The story jumped from one place to the next and seemed like the author wanted to do a lot at different points. It was kind of awkward and weird at times as well. Since I read the first volume, I feel like I have to follow through and read the second volume. There’s a lot I want to say but I would be writing all day.
It took me a few minutes to decide how I wanted to rate this. I very much enjoy a good adventure fantasy book. This story had exactly what I wanted in it. A lot of unique plots, beautifully diverse characters, and a very bright love behind it all. I really look forward to continuing on this world in Volume II. I don't think it's easy for an author to give a story not only a respectful cultural representation but a realistic one. The little clif hanger at the end was interesting, I was sort of expecting it based in some context clues but the delivery was unexpected and interesting. Bravo 👏
This duology could have been EPIC… IF it was written better. It was choppy and overall poorly written. Sometimes I could not tell which character was speaking, and it read more like a script for a movie versus a book. Some parts were rushed others lingered too long. But I enjoyed the unlikely pairing of an Asian MMC and a Black FMC. I LOVED that she was powerful and stood on business. I just wish the writing and transitions were written better. If it had, this duet could have been a 5⭐️ read for me.
I’ve had this on my tbr for so long and I got the second book for Christmas without me realizing it was a two book situation!! After laying my eyes on this, I have became a fan of the author!!! Shala is hella bad a$$ and her character development with young ji drew me in so well and young ji made me very very feral(pun intended) but all in all, I enjoyed it so much and I will be reading the second book IMMEDIATELY cause the cliffhanger had my jaw in hell lol!! My favorite read of the year!
I loved the storyline, the writing the non stop action. The lead female character was awesome Shala on point from start to finish. Sometimes the black female can be too sassy or talk too much…Shala was perfectly written. Young Ji his kindness made him sexy ash….i am definitely recommending this book to everyone on planet earth…I plan on lazy stalking this author until book two comes out. Kudos to you Feara W on your writing style.
Shala is found by Young Ji’s soldiers in the forest. She makes a deal to train his soldiers for 2 weeks and he will make her his consort. If neither can keep up their end of the bargain, death.
I like this story because Shala is the strong, silent type. She is not liked by the Seok people until the war. Young Ji is deeply afraid of his father, the King, but took on his mother’s and brother’s punishments.
The moment I started reading I was captivated by the writing technique and the storyline. The characters are likable, and I love the authors explanation of her inspiration. I saw every movie she mentioned in her explanation! I am so glad that I picked this book and will add this author to my list to follow. If you like period drama, especially kdrama and the walking dead characters Rick and Michonne, you will love this series.
I had been putting off reading this book, but omg! This was sooooo good. The world building, the chemistry, the suspense! I love how the story flowed so well and there was never a dull moment. If you listen to Hozier, the song that ran through my mind the enter time reading this book was Unknown/Nth and I’m not just saying that because her name is Shala. Will definitely be buying the physical! On to book 2
Dropped 62% in. This one is not for me . The story reads like a wattpad fantasy, and although I love me a good wattpad story, this one is bad. I don't like the Prince Young Ji. He talks and moves like an abusive man. I don't appreciate they way Shala is written. She described it like a slave, not a fan. The character I liked is Young Ji counselor Iamau he a goofy one. I got bored at this point.
Sooooooo good! You don’t see too many AMBW main characters so this was a breath of fresh air! Shayla is well written and a strong, independent character. I would love to know more about Young-Ji, his story breaks my heart, as does Shayla’s. I’m hoping in the next book we see the dynamic between Young-Ji and his father and how the characters navigate their relationship.
Wow!!! Ok I am hooked! I have never heard of this author before but I am now a follower! This book was action packed from beginning to the end. Yes it ended in a cliff hanger however this is the type of story that you do not mind ending in like this. All I can say is.....next installment please. Well Done Feara W!!!!!
This is an enjoyable read, with a world-building that really changes from most fantasy books. I liked the plot in itself as it worked perfectly to introduce us to the characters and the universe itself, although I did find the writing style a bit lacking. I will read book two out of curiosity.
If you are a fan of KDramas this will soothe the itch for more. Loved the characters and the cast. My only gripe is that I feel there should be more paragraph breaks and spacing. Format on the first page almost made me put this wonderful book down. But it was a great ride. Had the beats that you would like in a Kdrama
The amazon ads got me and I’m glad because this was actually so good! It’s def giving historical kdrama vibes. It was super easy to get into, didn’t drag out unnecessarily, and had enough twists to keep engagement. I’m excited for the second book!!!
I can't wait until the next book comes. This book was so good. Just wow, this was my first book by the author. Great storyline, never slowed, and the main characters was pleasing to get to know. Love it
