Shadows is the second book in Closer to the Sun, a new series that combines Romance, Urban Fantasy, and Suspense. It follows the lives of ordinary people with extraordinary talents as they navigate a world that is - and is not - exactly like our own.
Each book is a complete story following a different set of characters in an interconnected world with overlapping plotlines. They can be read independently and in any order, but you will get the best experience reading them in sequence.
Shadows is the second book in a series. It can be read on its own, but does contain spoilers for Shattered, Book One.
The closer you fly to the sun, the farther you have to fall.
Shadows is a strong and worthy followup to the world of Shattered, with a deeply satisfying plot, character development, and well-earned love story. I wasn’t expecting Jack to become a favorite, but he absolutely was by the end, and I thoroughly believed each character’s motivations throughout the book. Well done! I can’t wait to read even more in Morgan’s world!
I really enjoyed Morgan’s first book, but I think I liked this one even better. This story starts a couple of decades before the events in Shattered. Here we learn Diana’s backstory, and how she came to be the head of Grey Raven. I was a little surprised by the choice of going backwards, and to an extent overlapping the events of book 1, but it really worked. I think too often the head of the agency or whatever is a cynical, aloof, hard-as-nails caricature as a foil for whoever the main characters are in a book. Here we learn who Diana was before, still cynical and slow to trust, but also vulnerable. It was fascinating to see who she was as a person, behind the cool exterior. And also to understand why people feared her more than the paranormals that could literally set buildings on fire. I think one of Morgan’s strengths is how human her characters are. They have paranormal powers, but they are also complex, flawed, and striving to be their best. Same warning as the first book. If you pick it up, don’t have anything else you plan to do for a while. This book will pick you up and rocket you along.
What happens when someone unlocks the full potential of your power, but becomes an enemy?
What happens when someone unlocks the full potential of your heart, but then deceives you?
These questions lead us through the new decades-spanning adventure of Shadows, where we discover the origins of our paranormal paramours Diana & Jack. An, ahem, satisfying origin story does not disappoint those looking to dive deeper into the world and people introduced in Shattered. Shadows intertwines powers, choices, and sacrifices into a story that keeps your heart racing. New characters and plot twists make this book hard to put down. And in the mark of a well-told story, the climax is both satisfying and leaves you wanting more.
I thoroughly enjoyed Morgan's first book, "Shattered", and dearly hoped the sequel "Shadows" would be as good. Well, it is perhaps even better than its predecessor! "Shadows" is full of twists and turns as it uncovers the paranormal world hiding in plain sight around us. New Yorkers will recognize their beloved city, beautifully drawn to life, as Morgan's characters draw the reader in. It's impressive that "Shadows" stands on its own as a great read, with no need to have read the previous book in the series. Those who have read the previous book will delight in learning more about the characters we so enjoyed in book 1. One warning - be prepared to read this in one sitting, it's that good.
I was so excited when I found out that the second book in this series was out! I really loved the first book and this one was even better. There was so much going on, this book was filled with great character development, tons of action, and romance of course. I read it quickly because it was a true page turner, and like with the first book I was sad when it was over. I really liked the characters and wanted their story to just keep going and going. I’m already counting the days until the third book. Thank goodness this is a series!
It’s rare when the sequel to a series is better than the first book, but Shadows did it. Yet again, once I picked this book up I struggled to out it back down. Diana’s story went places I never expected and took me through the evolution of a character I’d like to be friends with in real life. Can’t wait for the next installment in this series!
I really enjoyed Shattered, and I think I like Shadows even more. You get to know the characters quickly, but there is always more to learn about them which keeps it fresh and interesting. And I love the way the characters from Shadows are intertwined with those introduced and featured in Shadows. Can’t wait for the next one!
I'm thoroughly impressed by Lisa J. Morgan's sophomore novel, Shadows. A deep, complex love story spanning decades. A slower read than Shattered (where we first met Diana and Jack), but well worth it. Vibes reminded me a bit of X-Men meets the new Mr. & Mrs. Smith TV show.
