The Highland Escape

Rate this book
The first time I met my neighbor, I was covered in toilet water. The second time? I was staring up his kilt. On accident, of course.

Just when life was looking up, things went from bad to worse. Promotion? Forget it.

I’m lucky I’m not arrested. But when fate tossed me the keys to an old Scottish Inn—courtesy of a grandmother I never met—I couldn't pass up the opportunity. What have I got to lose? Everything, apparently.

With no clue how to run an inn, let alone fix it up, I turned to the one person that doesn’t want to help me. A neighbor with an ax to grind.

It doesn’t matter how sexy he is—I wasn’t going to fall for his charms. That is, until he came to my rescue in a moment of need.

There were worse places to wait out my fate than in the arms of the one person I didn’t know I needed, but found myself falling for no matter what I did.

When the real world comes calling, I have a choice to make—go back to the comforts of my old life or dive headfirst into the chaos of the highlands.

With a hairy coo named Angus and a rooster that loves cooking shows, get ready to fall head over kilt for The Highland Escape.

This book could have been written about me because it’s my literal dream. “The Highland Escape” is a swoony, flirty and witty rom-com that brought all the Scottish goodness in a book.

To say Kirby is having a bad day is understatement. She’s up for a big promotion but to only find out that someone has been stealing from her client’s accounts under name. While under investigation, she finds out her maternal grandmother has past and left her a bed and breakfast… in Scotland. Callum is back home in the Highlands after his now ex and friend stole all of his money. His mum’s house is next to the Inn and he ends up helping Kirby renovate. As the two spend time together, a friendship develops and which leads to a chemistry neither was expecting.

I loved Kirby and Callum’s story and could not stop reading once I started. This book was the perfect trip to Scotland. The small village, the coo, the rooster, the kilts and all the Scottish terms a reader could want in a book set in Scotland. Kirby is career driven and wants to be at the top of her company. But the betrayal of someone using her name to steal was gut wrenching. But that escape in the Highlands is what she needed. Callum was in the same kind of predicament as her and that definitely bonded these two, which I loved. These two had witty and fantastic banter and I laughed out loud more than once. And once they gave into their attraction, the chemistry was sizzling. I loved how they spent time together renovating the Inn and really getting to know each other. They both had things to work on and did it in the best way. The ending was perfect for them and I loved the bonus epilogue.

"If I’m not with her, I want to be with her. When I am with her, I cannae stop touching her. It’s like my body craves her with a need I’ve never felt in my life before."
From the very beginning, I was reeled into this story. Kirby & Callum start off down on their luck; literally everything in their lives has fallen apart & both are looking for new purpose or a fresh start. The banter between them is fantastic & there will be many scenes that will make you smile. If that wasn’t enough, his mum humbles Callum in hilarious ways, there’s weird animals, & small-town vibes where everyone is in your business because they’re your adoptive aunts & uncles. The relationship in this romance is borderline cinematic & this story is a beautiful love letter to Scotland & its culture.
"Even if what Callum said wasn’t true, it still hurts. None of this was just a way to pass the time. I didn’t mean to fall in love with this place. Or him. But it happened anyway."
I loved everything about The Highland Escape! The small-town Scottish setting, the Scots English writing in his POV chapters, the quirky animals that make you laugh, the feisty Scottish mum who both strikes fear & obedience into her burly son while also being the gentle adoptive mum to anyone who needs it, the nosy residents who always catch you in a conversation no matter where you were previously heading, the picturesque scenes that are worthy of a movie, and banter you're guaranteed to love. My favorite thing about Callum & Kirby is their ability to call each other out, support one another whole heartedly, & somehow continue to prove their unconditional acceptance of the other. Their relationship grows organically & this story feels like a realistic romance; a true contemporary fairytale.
"Scotland has woven her way into my soul and is a part of me. It was always a part of me; I just didn’t know it."

Give me all those Scottish swoons! The Highland Escape by Emily Silver was a sweet and charming small-town romance set in the highlands of Scotland that did deliciously gooey things to my heart. I loved everything about Kirby and Callum’s whirlwind journey of a romance. Kirby’s fiery and passionate spirit shone brightly as she conquered any obstacle. Kirby’s love for Callum and Albernach was so endearing that it made you want all the happiness in the world for her. Callum was a hot, grumpy dream! The intimate conversations between these two helped Kirby and Callum trust and confide in each other. Plus, their chemistry was magnetic and downright explosive once they finally gave in to their desires. This is a new favorite couple from Emily for sure!

Overall, I LOVED this book. If you are a fan of a small-town Scottish romance with a hunky kilt-wearing hero, an ambitious heroine looking for new job opportunities, a newly inherited Inn, an escape to Scotland, renovation work, hairy coos, a rooster that loves watching cooking shows, steamy times, friendly locals, truths about the past, finding your true calling, and a HEA that will loch down deep in your heart, then you will love Kirby and Callum’s romance. I always look forward to more from Emily Silver.

“This woman has been a balm to my tattered and weary soul. I dinnae know what I needed to start healing. Apparently it was her. “

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s a quick, easy read filled with laughs and heartwarming moments. The story follows Kirby, who unexpectedly inherits a Scottish inn from a grandmother she never knew. With no clue how to run it, she reluctantly seeks help from her grumpy but irresistibly charming neighbor, Callum. As their chemistry heats up, Kirby finds herself torn between her old life and the new love and chaos she’s discovered in the Highlands.

“I’m not sure how this cranky Scot wormed his way under my skin and into my heart, but he did.”

Kirby’s first day in Scotland didn’t go as planned. Meeting Callum while covered in toilet water was hilarious—a far-from-perfect but funny introduction. Recently divorced, Callum has returned to Aberlach, and his mother insists he help Kirby renovate the bed and breakfast she’s inherited. Kirby plans to sell it and return to her life in California.

Their bickering and banter were spot on—I savored every moment. Kirby, a fiery redhead, and Callum, who knew just how to get under her skin, shared an undeniable attraction. They finally act on it after a kiss that changes everything. That kiss sparks a deeper connection, and the resulting chemistry is sizzling—the spice in this book was fantastic!

As their relationship deepens, Kirby starts to worry because she knows she’ll eventually leave. On the other hand, Callum finds comfort in her presence. After his divorce, he was struggling, but when he confided in Kirby, she was supportive and understanding. She saw the good in him—the man who was always there for the town, his mother, and for her when she needed him most. Watching their relationship blossom in such a short time was a delight. Kirby, a workaholic with little time for herself, finds peace and a sense of family in Scotland—something she never expected. She realizes that the career she’s spent eight years chasing isn’t truly fulfilling. Inheriting the inn offers her a chance at love and a place where she finally feels at home and genuinely happy. Despite their differences, Kirby and Callum complement each other perfectly—they’re amazing together.

I also loved the humor, especially with Angus the cow and Mr. Peep the rooster, who has a fondness for cooking shows. Overall, reading this book as part of the ARC team was a joy. If you’re in the mood for a quick, enjoyable read, add The Highland Escape o your TBR.

Written in first person from an alternating dual POV, this standalone was a joy to read and ends with a HEA.
Callum and Kirby find themselves at remarkably similar places in their lives when they first meet. Kirby is nearly 30 when her life implodes, and she inherits an inn in the Scottish Highlands. Callum’s (>35) life has also changed drastically in recent months, and he finds himself back in his little village with his Mum reevaluating his life choices.
After a meet cute that is quite funny and dirty in a way you might not expect, they start off on an argumentative way. Together they end up renovating Kirby’s inn, leading to many moments of witty dialogue. I loved reading as they go from bickering to friends to more. Their chemistry and attraction is potent and irresistible. They honestly cannot keep their hands off each other. The result is that there are many steamy scenes as they go from cooking and renovating to canoodling on the regular. They each have a little baggage they address as they go, and they finally find the sweetest happy ending together.
This was a very fun read that I stayed up way too late to finish because I could not stop. I loved the addition of the cow and the rooster. The villagers and small-town antics are fun and interesting. As a standalone, this is a good book to start with to read this author. But I will warn you that you will want to binge her several series of books if you do.
I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.

I. Loved. This. Book! I haven’t enjoyed a book so thoroughly in a long time. I loved the humor. I loved the characters. I loved the setting. I loved the premise.

Kirby is dedicated to her office job in LA, but her life is turned upside down when, instead of a promotion she is expecting, she is sacked and being investigated. To get her mind off the investigation, her mother suggests she look into the inheritance she was just given…for an inn off Loch Ness. Kirby heads off with plans on selling the inn. However, when she sees the Thistle Hill Lodge, she is dismayed at the condition it’s in. While exploring, she is startled by a grumpy bearded man and falls into the toilet. Kirby does seem to have a penchant for falling….

Callum is dealing with a rough situation as well. His wife and accountant ran off together…with all of Callum’s money. He has come home to Ardlach to reevaluate his life. His mother has him doing all types of work around town, including helping Kirby renovate. The sassy redhead drives him wild …in more than one way! But she is only in Scotland temporarily. He’d be a fool to get attached to her….

The banter of these two is priceless! I couldn’t put this down!

I really enjoyed the plot of fixing up the old inn & falling in love with the hot Scot in a kilt! The characters were so fun, especially Angus & Mr. Peep 🤭

I applaud Emily Silver for writing accurate Scottish English dialogue & taking the care to have it sensitivity / beta read. But because I don’t consume much or any books, film, or tv with Scottish English, it’s difficult for me to read because it pulls me out of the story trying to imagine how it would actually be said. It’s 100% a me problem. I’m sure that I would have loved the book more had there been an audio version to listen to, rather than just eyeball reading it.

I would absolutely recommend the book, it just wasn’t the perfect fit for me.

Thank you to Emily Silver for sending me an early copy to read!

I loved getting pulled into Kirby’s story. She finds herself with keys to an old Scottish Inn thanks to a grandmother she never even knew. She has nothing to lose and sets out to fix it up to sell it. In over her head, she turns to her grumpy neighbor Callum to help her remodel to sell it. From the noisy highland cow to the crazy roster and one sexy grumpy neighbor has her finding a love for a place once owned by family she never knew. It’s a book that you can read again and again.

Get ready to pack your bags and book a one way flight to Scotland because after reading this book you will be dreaming of beautiful rolling hills, highland cows, roosters that love cooking shows, and brooding Scottish men wearing a kilt 🦋

This is a beautiful, feel good romance- that will have you giggling and kicking your feet!

I adored the parallels between the MCs backstories making each other the perfect person to talk to because they understand each other! Watching the MCs slowly put themselves back together and heal throughout this book was just lovely!

I do wish certain scenes were drawn out and had slightly increased tension- specifically their first kiss, which felt slightly rushed.

This book is the perfect example of the quote “to be loved is to be known”. The main characters, truly know each other, and are able to read each other’s emotions without requiring words, which I believe symbolises true love.

After a terrible work experience, Kirby gets a phone call letting her know she inherited a house in Scotland from family she didn’t know about. With no work on her horizon she decides to go to Scotland to fix up the house and sell it. Her initial interaction with Callum, her neighbor, is not great. And neither are many of their interactions. But their bickering is more like foreplay for these two. Add in Callum helping Kirby fix up the house there are plenty of things to bicker about.

It’s quick, insta-attraction even if they bicker constantly. It reads like a novella just moving through their story and falling for each other. This is such a fun light-hearted story with a grumpy Scots man and a fish out of water girl from Cali.

Oh my goodness! This is such a fun feel good story that will just make you laugh and wish you were packing your bags and getting on a plane to Scotland.

One bad day takes Kirby from the only life she has known, across the ocean to her own property in Scotland. With nothing else to do, she stays to get the place fixed up and that’s how she meets Callum, the grumpy neighbor. Callum & Kirby were so cute. They start off as strangers but become so much more than lovers. While helping Kirby with the house, Callum starts to loosen up and he really starts to become the man he wants to be.

I loved all the Scottish parts to this story. It felt fully immersive. I might not be able to go there anytime soon but Emily’s writing made me feel like I was there. Angus the cow and Mr Peep the rooster were excellent touches to add to the fun feels of this story.

The Highland Escape is a standalone. It follows Kirby, a Cali girl who travels to Scotland after her whole world turns upside down and Callum a grumpy Scot who moves back home after his life falls apart. Both are looking for a fresh start and find love along the way.

I literally could not put this book down. It was so captivating and had me laughing the entire time. The chemistry between Kirby and Callum was fantastic. It felt very realistic as everything happened organically. The banter between all of the characters was so fantastic, and the vulnerable moments were really sweet. Kirby and Callum are complete opposites but completely understand each other on another level even after only knowing each other for a short while. I fell in love with this little Scottish town and could totally see myself uprooting my life to live there.

I also love the recurring theme in Emily’s books that every animal must have a cute name. Like a rooster named Mr. Peep is the funniest and cutest thing ever!

You will love this book if you like:
grumpy x sunshine
neighbors to lovers
scottish hero
small town
opposites attract
Fish out of water (Cali girl moves to Scotland)

You will not regret checking this book out!

What every girl dreams of inheriting an inn in Scotland that comes with a hunky Scot for a neighbor 😍

Kirby is having a rough day when she is being investigated at her job but finds out she is inheriting an inn from a grandmother she never knew. When she gets there smoking hot Callum is there to help repair the inn and repair Kirby.

As a socal girl who LOVES Scotland this book was so fun to read. It brought me back to my trip to the highlands and makes me want to go back right now and find me a Scottish man ( any takers 😉 ). I loved their chemistry and the sassy attitude they gave each other. I only wish it was a little longer I did feel like it was rushed in some areas.

Thank you Emily for this arc this book brought back so many good memories and makes me want to jump on a plane!

I love a Scottish Rom Com! If you’re a fan of the Highland Fling, you’ll enjoy reading about Kirby and Callum!

After issues at work and inheriting an inn in Scotland, Kirby sets off on an adventure in the highlands! After she meets some funny animals and a grumpy hot neighbor, she begins to renovate the old inn. She also learns about her own history! All while falling for the grumpy Callum. I really loved how they helped each other heal and shared themselves with one another. I of course enjoyed the animal cameos 🐮🐓🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A fun and spicy rom com that makes you feel like you’re watching a movie!

A delightful fish out of water story that will have you chuckling often. Navigating a foreign country, cantankerous farm animals and a rude, attractive neighbor are just a few of the foils that provide levity in this romcom. The chemistry between Kirby and Callum explodes in lots of spice and catching feelings lead to tender moments. This one is all about realizing where you truly belong and what makes you happy and having the courage to embrace it.

I liked it, it was an easy read and I enjoyed the characters chemistry and the location of the story. It was a great set up for going to Edinburgh. I just wished the fact that Kirby’s friend setting her up wasn’t skimmed over so much and wished to see more of Callum’s issues/ backstory get more resolved or involved in the book.

The Highland Escape by Emily Silver, Kirby Stewart is a beautiful girl who has dedicated her last years to her job, dreaming of the day she will be given the reins of it, although she knows that it's not her ideal job, it's where she has developed and she has sacrificed a lot of her personal life for her professional life, but just on the day she was supposed to be promoted she finds herself in a problem and what she dreamed of was going to her future she sees that completely lost. But it's just at that moment that she finds out that his maternal grandmother, whom she did not know existed and lived in a small town in Scotland, has died and has left her a small inn in that country. This takes Kirby to the small town of Aberlach, located on the shores of Loch Ness, where the adventure of a lifetime is about to begin. Callum MacRae is a very sexy Scotsman who finds himself back in Aberlach after the death of his nanna and added to this, his wife left with his accountant, with whom she cheated on him, leaving him without money, so he now lives with his mother who doesn't let him sit still and think about how bad his life is, but rather she offers him help for anything that is needed in the town. When this beautiful but completely out of place girl arrives in his small town his introduction is somewhat crazy and even if he wants to stay away it will be difficult since she is his neighbor and his mother will not stop pressuring him to help Kirby renovate the inn. This will be the perfect scenario for this couple, in the midst of renewals and conversations, to begin to know each other better and trust each other, and when they let attraction take the reins, their relationship will reach another level, and without realizing it, they will help each other overcome their wounds from their past and find the path of life that will make them truly happy.
I loved this story, it's fresh and hilarious, sweet and sexy. If it's a story that takes place in the Highlands, be sure that I will read it, a dreamy and picturesque little town, with varied characters, enjoying the Scottish slang and accompanying Kirby and Callum on the path to happily ever after was definitely the perfect mix to win my heart. This is a story that I tell you, you should NOT pass up, you will enjoy it from beginning to end. Totally, and Absolutely Highly Recommended!

¡Total, y Absolutamente Altamente Recomendada!

Ms. Silver delivers another captivating, entertaining and must-read book that will have you laughing, swooning over Callum, and loving and relating to Kirby. At the turn of every page, there was great banter, a bit of angst and two people who loved to push one another's buttons.
Kirby inherits an Inn in Scottland from her grandmother whom she never met. This is possibly the best thing that could have happened to her at that time since her life is falling apart. What she wasn't expecting was an Inn that needed a lot of work and an arrogant Scotsman living next door. Cullum and Kirby have this love-to-hate relationship but he has been voluntold to help Kirby with the Inn by his mother. He is trying to get his life back on track after everything that he has been through. Maybe this will be a good thing for him if he can only get the feisty redhead next door off his mind. When he comes to her rescue the feeling takes a one-eighty and things heat up. Callum and Maeve work side by side fixing up the Inn but know that there is an end date since she wants to sell the Inn when it's finished. Can what they have change her mind? Will Callum and his charming ways get her to see that she needs to stay and forget about LA and everything that is there?
MS Silver did an outstanding job of using words that you could hear the Scottish accent when you were reading the book. For me, this added another check to an already must-read book.

Yeah… No. I’m still on a romance streak because of my holiday (I just want some easy things to read), but this was def not it. The insta-love is already a trope I don’t like very much, but when it’s also not properly done… Eh

-

“Are you done?” Callum asks.
“Yes.” I breathe out, sucking more air into my lungs.
“Good. Then I’m going to kiss you now.”

Anticipation ripples between us as I hold on to his wrists, my eyes locked on his.
“Can I?” he whispers.
Licking my lips, I nod.

Before he’s out the door, he turns and comes back to me, pulling me in close.
“Just try not to go lookin’ up any more kilts, aye?”
I laugh. “You’re such a bawbag.”
“Listen to you.”

“You like that? Me insulting you?” I might have picked up a thing or two being here.
Callum drops his forehead to mine, his blue eyes piercing me with his gaze. “Just you. I like you.”
I press a quick kiss to his lips. “I like you too. The only kilt I’ll be looking up today is yours.”
“As it should be.”

I’m not sure how this cranky Scot wormed his way under my skin and into my heart, but he did.

Through it all, I’ve been trying to figure out a way to ask her to stay. Because now that I’ve had a taste of her, I dinnae want anything less than her.
She’s it for me.

This book was filled with antics, humor, and one quirky Scottish village - it was the perfect combination. Kirby was the bold and witty American and Callum was the brooding, highland god. The dynamics between Kirby and Callum was spot on, the sizzling chemistry was balanced out with laugh out loud banter. Plus, Emily Silver did such a good job of writing portions of the book in Scottish English that you could hear the accent rolling off the page.
As much as I loved the Kirby and Callum, Angus and Mr. Peep may have stole the entire show. Who doesn't love a sausage roll stealing cow and a rooster obsessed with his tv shows. But honestly, the entire cast of side characters made me want to back up my life and move to Scotland.
This book was well written, the plot was interesting and the characters were dynamics. I would highly recommend this Scottish rom-com.

I received this book from the publisher/author at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.
