Six Kingdoms #3

Pass on the Cup of Dreams

Rate this book
Can a cut-throat reiver escape his nefarious past with the help of the only woman he's ever loved and a promise he never dreamed he'd make? Falca Breks will find out on a journey through a wilderness more dangerous than the squalid city of his birth, toward confrontations with not only enemies past and present but also himself-and the lure of two things that could make him the richest and most powerful man in the Six Kingdoms. "Pass on the Cup of Dreams" quickly immerses the reader in the imaginatively detailed fantasy world of the Six Kingdoms. Fergusson's writing is excellent, the plot relentless, the characters wonderfully complex. If you enjoy gritty, dark fantasy you will find a feast here. -Robin Hobb, New York Times bestselling fantasy author Bruce Fergusson's two previous Six Kingdoms novels were a breath of fresh air in the often predictable genre of secondary-world fantasy. He hasn't lost his touch with his latest, "Pass on the Cup of Dreams." It's inventive, quirky and unpredictable-all the things I love in a book. -Charles deLint, World Fantasy Award-winning author

Bruce Fergusson's work seems to be largely unknown and that is really a shame. His first two novels set in the Six Kingdom's series, Shadow of His Wings and The Mace of Souls have wonderful cover art by Darrell K Sweet. (I did not know he had passed away.) Both books are stand alone and both are pretty awesome.

Pass on the Cup of Dreams picks up directly after the events in Mace of Souls. Falca and Amala are determined to help return the timberlimb, Gurrus, to his homeland in the Rough Bounds. Gurrus has a few secrets he hasn't shared with his companions. Their journey is frought with perils seen and unseen, and their steps are hounded by an army of Wardens and a bounty hunter/assassin called a Shadden. As the story progresses you begin to wonder 'Where have all the timberlimb's gone?'

The plot has a few surprises too. A few of the characters have unseen connections that can be a twist for the unwary reader. Lukan Barra's continued story makes an unexpected and welcome appearance also.

There is tragedy throughout the story, but that does not mean that the story is tragic. Love and compassion also appear in abundance. Greed rears its ugly head. Almost everyone has an agenda to further their own ends. Even with every hand turned against him, Falca wants to change his old ways and do what's right.
