Not all is Merry and Bright.

While it may be a festive season for most, for Special Agent Emily Slate, Christmas is nothing more than a nuisance—a time when crowds and traffic get worse, and tempers run hotter.

As if Emily didn’t have enough trouble surviving the season unscathed, a recent string of robberies has just turned deadly. A trio of robbers, each dressed as Santa Claus, have been looting local jewelry stores and their most recent attack has claimed the life of a young woman.

Determined to stop the thieves before they escalate further, Emily and Zara take the case, using their wits and skills to track down the robbers before they can strike again.

But this is no average holiday heist. Dark and twisted motives have put this plan into motion and Emily will find herself feeling the whiplash as she attempts to navigate the twists and turns of this unique case.

If these criminals aren’t caught before holiday is over, there’s no telling how much carnage they may leave in their wake.

Oh What Fun is a holiday-themed novella that takes place between A Liar’s Grave and The Girl in the Wall.

Well, boys and girls, Agent Emily Slate is back at work and guess who she's chasing after? Three guys pretending to be Santa Claus! But don't worry, Agent Slate will protect the real Santa Claus because she always gets her bad guys.

Emily is joined by Agent Zara Foley and the two of them are called to the scene of a second Santa robbery at a jewelry store. Amidst the chaos, while jewelry cases are being smashed and employees are cowering in defense, Emily is hit in the head and is knocked out cold.

Once revived, Emily and Zara are off on a bizarre, Christmas adventure to find the perpetrators. Each layer they peel off leads to another group of people in another direction. And, bless their hearts, they are driving around Washington DC two days before Christmas. Talk about traffic jams!

Alex Sigmore has written a fun, but challenging Christmas story, complete with egg nog, wassail and canapes. Grab yourself a hot drink and some munchies and get ready to devour Oh What Fun. And Happy Holidays to you.

A tidy little holiday package

Actual rating: 4.5 stars

This Emily Slate novella was a delicious holiday treat!

While shopping for a Christmas present for Liam, Emily and Zara get embroiled in an active jewelry store robbery at the mall. Three thieves, all disguised as Santa Claus. Not very jolly if you ask me!

The mystery is fairly standard. Where the story soars is with Emily’s discomfort surrounding the Christmas holiday and the awkwardness of her blossoming relationship with Liam.

It’s a quick read (don’t let my reading time fool you, I was camping and didn’t have much time to read) and a worthy addition to the Emily Slate series.

The local authorities haven’t been able to catch a gang of Santa Clauses that have been robbing jewelry stores, but when they started getting violent, FBI agents Emily Slate and Zara Foley are called in to stop them.

This exciting, fast-paced, festive novella is the perfect palate cleanser to read between all those holiday romances. It takes place between books 8 and 9 in the series, but the author gives enough background info that you can read it as a standalone. It’s a great way to try out the series and it’s free with #KindleUnlimited.

Thank you @AlexSigmore for the advanced copy of this book. I’m looking forward to the next one!

Oh What Fun

Emily and Sara are handed a string of Santa robberies of jewelry stores and it takes less than a week to solve. Emily and Liam have keys to each others apartments now. Great story.

Cute story

This was more of a novella. It may have been a quick read, and not a complicated or involved case but it had all the elements to make a good continuation of Emily and Sara's quest to solve crimes.

So entertaining

What a breath of fresh air! I haven't read a short story for so long, it was kind of refreshing. I will never tire of the banter between Emily and Zara! What a great friendship.

Thank you Mr. Sigmore and Merry Christmas!

Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. Tis the season for crowded malls and mind numbing Christmas songs, and Emily Slate is already exhausted by it all with her sanity stretched too the limits. But from the moment screams whip the crowds into a panic, Emily and Zara find themselves confronting a group of thugs that will definitely be making Santa's naughty list by the end of the day. Unfortunately for the two agents, the more they unwind the complex web that has enveloped what's far more than smash and grab robberies affecting the Corporation operating the jewelry stories that has become the thieves targets. When a harrowing twist flips the running theory Emily had for the case on its head; takes Emily and Zara to the shattering truth behind the frightening crimes... and swallowing up all of the warmth and happiness that holiday season was suppose to give. Whether you're already an Alex Sigmore fan or you're completely new to this author's work, Oh What Fun- the humor laced, intense, profound mystery will convince you to want the next book.

Highly recommended.

When I started reading “Oh What Fun” I thought it was a stand-alone.
As I got stuck in it did seems as if the heroine, Emily Slate, had a lot more baggage than the story needed. But, some authors like to dig deep.
It was only at the end that I discovered it is actually book 12.5 in the series - that's a lot of catching up to do.
FBI Agent Emily doesn't like Christmas but she finds herself with her colleague and friend, Zara Foley, dutifully but unenthusiastically shopping for presents.
Luckily for her there's a jewellery robbery in progress. Yay!
Three Santas are the perps and they're fast on their feet.
It's the third such robbery in recent weeks and the first in which there was a killing.
Emily and Zara are given the case and pursue every clue logically.
It turns out that it's a simple case, though it comes with a twist at the end.
There's quite a good sense of humour and I particularly liked Emily's unfortunate comment to the 'real' Santa!

Oh What Fun is Book #12.5 Book in the Emily Slate Series by Alex Sigmore.
This has the vibes of crime thrillers that feel like binge-worthy TV shows, but in book form. Alex Sigmore has created FBI agent, Emily Slate, who’s tough, smart, and just the right amount of emotionally messy to make her feel real and relatable. She’s not some flawless superhero type - she’s been through loss, made mistakes, and still pushes forward, which makes you root for her even harder.
Each book has its own mystery, but there’s also this ongoing thread about Emily’s personal life and career struggles that keeps you hooked from one installment to the next. The twists are sharp, and while you might guess a few things, the author still manages to throw in curveballs that make you go, wait, WHAT?!
Well worth the read.
Happy Reading…

OH WHAT FUN INDEED…

Loved it, typical Em and Zara humor.

At first I was confused since I know Liam and Emily’s relationship has been going on for more than just a month or so. Then Em had a conversation with SAC Wallace and I decided to look up the copyright date. Now I could enjoy it more, I’m pretty much caught up with their books after 2023.

A sweet little novella, highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this! Loved it so much.

I was in the mood for a Christmas story and this one really fit the bill. Not only did I get a great holiday mystery, I got a new series to follow. I loved the interaction between Emily and Sara and following the action really kept my interest in the story high. Definitely recommend this one!

I think I would have enjoyed this one more if I’d read the series. There were a lot of references to things that happened before which were lost on me. If I ignore those bits, then I can say it was a well-plotted quick read with good characters. I am not sure if I want to get involved in a whole new series, but it would probably be good.

Just ok

Basic storyline, moderately likable characters - doesn’t really inspire me to read more in this series by the author - meh
