The book premise has an eerie resemblance to another book I read fairly recently Duke's Double (Lords of Love) by Anita Mills . Both stories featured a young heroine married to a duke, who fairly early in marriage had wrongly accused his wife of adultery with his best friend. The scorned heroine and the best friend flee to Italy. The outraged husband obtained divorce. The exile couple married and had a son. The best friend died and his widow came back to England with the son who has uncanny resemblance to her first husband. The stories continue in their separate ways showing couples working on reconciliation. I think Mills story is superior to this one as it felt much more realistic and grown up with much better character development.

I think a girl always remembers her first few all-out, appallingly detailed, unashamedly erotic romances. This was my second, and I can remember being so shocked (I was 12 or 13)! I re-read this at least three times, and loved it every time. I wasn't yet the jaded reviewer--I could so easily swallow their love! So I'm a little biased. But I really think that this was an above average romance, even if it is based on a Big Misunderstanding. I think I cried!!!

Don't let the synopsis of the book scare you away - it's not at all what you think.
I really enjoyed this story. Some parts were a little too descriptive for me (the clothes, the rooms, the town, etc.), so I just skimmed over those parts.
I would recommend.
