The Shadow Bound Queen #4

Cour des Serpents et des Secrets: Mariées de la brume et des faës (Reine de L’Ombre t. 4)

Rate this book

So a big premise of the series involves finding a Magical item before Maz turns 30. Why does Frima say she have known him over 100 years when comforting Reyna. Deal breaker

I'm afraid this was a very weak finale.

After waiting all series for the spicy scenes between the two leads, it did not live up to expectations. Very disappointing spice and not much of it.

The main characters personalities seemed to change so suddenly that their love came across rather insta-love-esq.

The plot itself wasn't bad though.

The side characters weren't utilised enough in this one.

There was also a lot of spelling errors, so it could have done with some editing.

Overall, it felt rushed and unfinished. Disappointing.

Ugh

“I am not true! I am the embodiment of an infernal lie!”

Cringe

“You know I don’t care what you look like, right? This world of beautiful, glittering fae you grew up in, it’s not the same as mine. I care about your actions, not your face.”

Liar

“Red, in a sea of brown. Bravery, in a world of cowards.”

Did you forget your bro Ellisar?

Okay, i firlmly believe author wanted to get through 5 books at least, with the fourth taking place in the earth court and the last one in the gold court, clearly the idea was aborted partway through the story and we just had to pile all the payoffs in, what, five chapters? (Not counting the epilogues)

Apparently the Earth court doesn't have the manpower to organize the games, let's review what was needed for said games:

Shadow Court
1) two ropes
2) a bunch of rocks
3) four horses

Ice Court
1) four houses
2) four spheres of metal
3) four sledges with twelve wolves

Gold Court
1) four canoes, about ten targets and a pool

Yeah I think they can manage

Uh...Dakkar dies and the only thing Reyna can think about is how she would feel if Maz died? Like damn, woman, his last act was to protect YOU. His wife and comrades, as well as the Ice Court, just sacrificed themselves for you to escape and you left them to die (apparently none of them did for unknown reasons, but she couldn't know that), but sure let's focus on what could happen maybe if you get caught and lose again.

The Starved Ones apparently had the power to overwhelm anyone except the Shadow Queen and Maz (at full power) and...didn't do shit for 95% of the story only to show up at the end?

Svangrior apparently is NOT the spy, he just...hates everyone i guess? Don't get me wrong it would probabaly be absolute garbage if he was, but he's on their side...and is just straight up rude to everyone and everything, no reason for this is given

Why was the queen's advisor feeling guilty over Reyna? And why wasn't his mind shielded? Well...who knows

Four of the five villains take each other out in the span of a chapter, the big bad villain gets backstabbed and straight up dies having only facilitated the good guy's path, the Mist Staff was supposed to be given willingly, but apparently that doesn't work for Orm? Like, how did he get the Shadow King's staff to obey him so he could give it to the Queen? How does he plan on taking it from the queen? How can Reyna use it freely?

"They had killed my mom’s human husband to try to force her to harm other humans?"

Woman, it's called a father

B-but she says it later on in the chapter.

Why wouldn't that be your first assumption?

Reyna's already single digit IQ plummets below zero when holding the mist staff. She also makes the decision to free the Starved ones when that would give Orm all the power, he would have legit won had the magic worked in a normal way and be instantaneous, instead the magic conveniently takes a minute to get going so the Elder randomly decides to kill Orm, clealry NOT knowing the spell has been lifted and she's about to go to heaven or something, otherwise why would she be worried about Orm trying to control them? Which by the way is exactly what Reyna SHOULD do, it doesn't destroy the mist staff, she can free them after conquering the shadow and gold (and maybe all) Courts or at least kill Orm and get her the other mist staff (which is something the Starved ones should have done already) and why is there only ONE Elder? Shouldn't the other ones be here too?

Reyna's mother is quite possibly the most evil person in Yggdrasil's history, she has single handedly created the most terrible catastrophe to have ever occurred in the world, and she did it all ONLY for revenge. As shown, Reyna wasn't in danger, her mother did it because they killed her husband, not to defend him, or to defend Reyna, litterally ONLY for revenge. AND THE AUTHOR HAS THE BALLS TO TRY TO MAKE THE READER FEEL FOR HER.

Reyna can live however she wants because the Vanir magic that made the rune bearers only humans didn't affect her? But the Vanir can come for her now so... they of course STILL believe all Fae rune bearers are too powerful right...? I mean look at what she could have done to the world by taking control of the Starved Ones.

For all the useless discussions that went nowhere in four books, we couldn't waste more than two sentences on the royal wedding

I feel like this is the most non-ending to a series ever. I’m not even sure what happened and I just read it.

I am not surprised by the ending but upset it ended on that note without ANY backstory or kind of like ‘what does this mean’ discussion.

We have a lot of questions about a lot of characters and we still don’t get answers though we do show progress in that general direction so I’m hopeful more is fleshed out in the next book.

Still so fast though. Would love more story telling.

I had to let go of the imperfections - this series needs a better editor. Buuuuut, I still enjoyed it enough to read the whole series. There are good bones here.

Mais c’est une joke.

Tome 1-2-3 : entre 3,5 et 4 étoiles.

Tome 4 : 1⭐️

Non.

Hi, I take back everything I said in my last review.

Let’s take a shot every time one of them says “I love you.”

Jumping right into the spice (🌶️🌶️/5). What the heck was that? I waited four books for that and it was bland to me. Maz packed up horses with furs like he knew it was going to happen too. It should have been saved for the ending when he was finally cured. Every single time they got close to each other a rune would jump from his body. But you’re telling me they could have sex and never have any issues with the runes? (which we never got an answer for by the way. I have no idea why runes were jumping from his body, and why Reyna couldn't read them, but she could read other runes)

I’m not one to pick out plot holes. I’m just here for a good time, not a long time right? But maybe I missed something here. Their quest had to be completed before Mazrith’s 30th birthday. Simple enough. Well, when Reyna asked Frima how long she’s known him she said “over 100 years.” Girl what? Is Fae math different? Did I miss that subject in school?

Another thing was at the ending when the plot twist was shoved in there and made no sense… other things also made no sense. How in the world was the person able to get into the cave with the statues? You have to be a shadow fae with shadow magic to do that?

Honestly this series could have easily done with about 500 extra pages and I'm not even kidding. I needed more. More details about the pasts of characters and how they interacted with everyone. I needed more feeling from our main characters. Everything was just so compacted in here and so much more detail was needed for me. We learned all about Reyna and her past in the span of like 5-10 pages at the ending and it was just shoved right in my face. I wish things were set up nicer and we were learning along with them.

The ending didn't feel like an ending, I feel like there are still so many open ends that need answers, and I understand some books just end with questions sometimes. But here I just feel like it wasn't that thought through.

Okay so I'm feeling kind of conflicted about the final book of the series. By no means was it bad but I was worried it was going to feel a bit rushed as if the author was tying up every single loose end in this book and I was kind of right. Instead of the author tying up a few of the smaller plot lines in the previous book to really use this one to thoroughly close out the series without it feeling rushed, everything was just kind of taking care of in this book. Again, it was not a bad book it just felt a bit rushed especially the last 40% of it. It seemed like there was a lot more just telling than really showing how things happened or why and it kind of took away from the overall enjoyment of the book and series. Having said that I did enjoy the whole series overall and I would try another series from this author again.

AH, unfortunately, this one was a miss for me 😅 The first in the series started out with a really strong premise and clear plot, but as the series went on I feel like the plot was lost. What really got me with this one was that I felt like the characterization was all over the place and things would happen out of nowhere so fast and just…didn’t make sense? I also felt like Maz was acting so differently page to page with reasons that also didn’t make sense to me. I’m a little bummed because I thought this series had a lot of promise for fun, quick fantasy romance but unfortunately it fell really flat :(

This book really, really, needed editing. So many mistake. And so many inconsistencies I had to go back pages to check if I had misread.

I liked the first book, it had promise. But the series overstayed it’s welcome.

The MCs sporadic behaviour ( which I found infuriating) was all swept under the rug within 2 pages because of frankly half assed reasons. His reasoning was just… What the actual fuck? It didn’t even make any sense.

Spoilers below.

The reason he was so mad in the previous book and is still mad in this one is that she saw some of his secrets without meaning to.
Simultaneously Mazrith had to know everything about Reyna, she had to divulge all her secrets to him in exchange to this perceived sleight.
Let’s remember that’s all the while he’s able to just wander into any unguarded thoughts he wishes.

He needed to be pissed off at her because he can’t get close to her?
Because he has loved her for years? Because she is dangerous but he wasn’t sure why at first? My dude… That’s just ridiculous. It didn’t read like that at all. It read like the author wrote herself in a corner and needed a reason for him to stop being mad.

I don’t really have an issue with MMCs acting like idiots, but even bully romance have better reasoning for them running hot/cold or well, bullying the FMC.

That’s another thing that really bothered me, Reyna is supposed to be on this journey of empowerment, learning to fight, earning braids, standing up to her old abuser, and well finding out more about herself in general. And she just lets Mazrith walk all over her when he’s in a mood because she apparently did something untrustworthy? Without even meaning to?

And when he tells her he basically is going to keep her bound to him whether she likes it or not? Her reaction isn’t “I’m done with this fucker”, it’s “I love this fucker”? Sooo, no PTSD from the threat of being treated like that psychopath from the Gold court ( sorry already forgot his name) wanted to treat her?

Also. The reveals weren’t really reveals? I mean I thought we all knew what was going on since book one?
Was anyone really surprised that Mazrith was a gold fae? I mean gold fucken runes flies off his skin since book one.

Or was anyone surprised when they found out who the traitor was? The only human they all overlook when thinking about who had access to the FMC? Like come on!

Finally, personal pet peeve, but I’m never a fan of the “surprise pregnancy in the last few pages”, or in this case lines.

The finale of the series and more exciting than the first couple of books.

With Maz and Reyna finally working together and letting each other in on their secrets we finally get a more grown up version of their relationship.

Side characters also get more development too.

I enjoyed the action, felt sad at the appropriate points and was happy with the ending.

If you find typos and grammatical errors irritating then don’t go anywhere near this series - all 4 books have multiple errors throughout, though in the final 2 books the more engaging storyline carries you through it more than in the first 2.

Everything came together in a way that felt satisfying without dragging things out. The pacing was great, the tension stayed high, and I loved seeing how it all played out. It wrapped up exactly how I hoped it would and left me feeling happy with the journey.

Overall, a solid finale. This whole series is insanely bingeable.

SUCH AN AMAZING SERIES!

This series brings a whole new meaning to fea and Norse mythology. The author did an amazing job with her research and world building.

The only reason this book received 3 stars is because chapter 15 was said to be in Reyna point of view but was actually in Maz’s. There were also a few grammar problems.

As for the story itself, it just seemed very very rushed. I actually enjoy the hunger games type of torment. I was looking forward to the earth court and was hoping to see or hear about the fire court but unfortunately neither of those happened. The main battle seemed to happen in what seemed to be two chapters all at ONCE. As for the ending I love happy ending but MAN, give this girl a little more!!

Overall this series was beautiful and I couldn’t wait for this book to come out! I finished this book in one day! I don’t regret reading this series at all.

2.5 I don't know... the way in which everything was revealed at the end was disappointing. I think I would have rather had the reveals be spread out throughout the series, that way, we can see Reyna come to terms with everything, and it does not feel as though everything was thought up at the end. I also have a problem where I become disinterested in couples once they are together and there is no more tension and angst. That happened in this one and I just found Maz and Reyna annoying.

I enjoyed the series , the world was amazing. I loved how it was a mix of different mythologies.

Felt like the serie was a little stretched out for no reason , for 3.5 of the books barely to no answers at all , for only a floodgate to open in the last 15% and most was even after the *main event* and alot stil unknown .

Well I read 100 pages of this and I can’t read a page more. DNF. Was this written by someone else? Was there even an editor? The characters felt like shells of themselves and there were plot holes and incongruences galore. The spice was a yawn worthy. What a shame since I truly enjoyed the first three.

At least the main character wasn't an annoying brat in this one and we finally have a conclusion with a feel good ending. I mean yeah it was "entertaining" but also feels poorly written and this is coming from a main french speaker. I shouldn't be able to read mistake in a book written in my second language so easily!!!

I enjoyed this whole series.. it was slow to begin with and Reyna acted a bit wimpy but by the 2/3 book she started training and i liked her a lot more.
The final booked seemed slightly rushed as there seemed to be many final scenes lacking the detail i wanted and a few mistakes. I wish the final book was spread to 2 books so that there was more explanation! i would have also enjoyed reading more about Reyna and Maz’s happy ending.
The other books were so detailed and it gave so much more understanding as to what was going on - We were building up to this final book and it was just a bit disappointing… The final book left me with questions that won’t be answered as there’s no more books in this series…
The storyline is very interesting, i enjoy the characters and the author’s story telling. Even with the slight issues, i would definitely recommend. My favourite characters are Maz, Frima and Dak (Reyna aswell after the first book).

I loved this series it was such a easy read.

Anyhow this one was a 3⭐️

I loved the characters, the plot but this one was missing something.
I felt the finale could of been so much more.
The author created such a beautiful world I live the Viking/fae combination it really came through in all 4 books.

I would recommend this series to anyone wanting the slow burn, found family, epic adventure and deadly trails.
All the tropes a fantasy reader loves.
