New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Angie Fox writes sweet, fun, action-packed mysteries. Her characters are clever and fearless, but in real life, Angie is afraid of basements, bees, and going up stairs when it is dark behind her. Let’s face it. Angie wouldn’t last five minutes in one of her books.
Angie is best known for her SOUTHERN SPIRITS™ mysteries, and for her ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER books.
A Ghostly Gift is another short story in the Verity Long Southern Ghost Hunter series from Angie Fox. Like the other short stories I've read which augment the series, it’s fun and charming and well written. It’s part of that sub-genre more fluff than actual mystery, of course, but it’s very well done and has some likable and engaging characters.
Verity is having trouble furnishing her new Victorian home in this one. She is also trying to get used to having a ghost knocking around the place. Frankie is a dead gangster trapped with her after an unfortunate mishap with his ashes. Rather than scary, he is quite endearing. The device of having him help Verity see the dead — and use her ability to make some much needed cash — works well.
Verity’s sister, Melody, wants her to help her friend Julie get rid of a ghost who has been bothering the collectibles case in her resale shop, New For You. Though Julie isn’t in a much better position than Verity and can’t offer money, a new set of kitchenware to the struggling Verity sounds just as good. It soon becomes complicated, however, when Verity and Frankie pay a visit at night, and discover the resale shop is a bar from another time. A soldier from the war worried about the great love he left behind, and whom he needs to find before she passes, is at the heart of this short and surprisingly warm story.
A tradition featuring bottle caps and a girl who seems to have dropped off the map in ’42, when the young soldier died, turn this into a warm and sentimental short story, respectful of the sacrifice made by so many in WWII. The author obviously appreciates these things and it comes across, giving this fun fluff also a bit of warmth and tenderness. A light and nice read between bigger and more substantive books that makes me want to begin reading the series when I’m in the mood for something lighter.
A Ghostly Gift is a short story in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries that takes places just after volume one.
Verity ends up helping her sisters friend who owns a second hand/antique store that is haunted. One of the ghosts is starting to get aggressive and break things.
Verity brings a reluctant Frankie along as she tries to pieces the pieces together. It’s a very sad and heartwarming love story. It’s a sweet edition with all the charm of the larger novels. It’s well developed and paced.
Audio: Tavia Gilbert is a fantastic narrator. She brings out the cast of characters and that small southern town feel.
A Ghostly Gift was a delight. I had fun with this novella. It was a delicious treat to the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series. I highly recommend this paranormal cozy mysteries series.
Verity and Frankie are solving ghostly murders again. This novella is just as much fun and spooky situations as the rest of the series. This one is a bit more sentimental as it involves a soldier who didn't make it home and his true love.
Sweet but too short for my taste. There is sadness too (for the ghost who was causing problem here) but he got his happiness later on. The love of his life (and dead) had been devoted to him for more than 70 years, aww isn't it so sweet? ❤️
This was a fun short listen. I was happy to find this title available with my Audible Plus subscription. It is a very short listen at just at an hour but it was still quite entertaining. I enjoyed the mystery and thought that the narration was excellent.
The next installment of the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries is a very short novella with Verity and Frankie investigating some paranormal disturbances at a vintage resale shop. Verity isn’t sure if working with ghosts is something she wants or is cut out for. Her boyfriend, Ellis would likely have a problem with it. So, she doesn’t tell him and even Frankie isn’t that enthusiastic about this assignment either.
During her initial investigation, Verity meets the ghost of a WWII soldier who is looking for the woman he planned to marry when he returned from the war. Unfortunately, he never returned and he cannot find her on either the immortal plane of existence or on Earth. He is desperate for Verity to find her and tell her he always loved her and still does. The ring he gave to her has been sold to the resale shop and he wants Verity to give it back to her.
This story was very short and I paired the reading with the audio which was narrated by Tavia Gilbert. As with the first book in this series, she does an excellent job bringing all the personalities of the various characters to life. This story is packed full of action despite its short length and the only issue I had with this story is that Lucy, Verity’s pet skunk, does not make an appearance.
My Final Verdict: This story got me a little misty eyed and I always love a happily ever after, even for ghosts. I highly recommend this book to fans of cozy mysteries and ghosts
Thank you to the publisher, Moose Island Books, who provided an advance reader copy of this book via NetGalley.
Okay. I liked this one. I like ghosts. I like love that endures through the ages. I like gangsters who might have a soft side under their bullet holes. There's backstory and a little family bonding (well, if you consider it bonding when one sister tries mightily to take care of the other when she's down and out. Which I do.) and more than a few ghosts.
I'd be interested in seeing how Verity's story started,
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book may be listed on some sites as 0.5, but it is actually 1.5, so I highly recommend reading Southern Spirits first, otherwise this will be kind of a spoiler. This was a short-cute story to pass the time between the first book Southern Spirits and The Skeleton in the Closet (Book #2) - coming fall 2015, not soon enough IMHO. As with the first book in this series I highly recommend it and can't wait for the next!
Following up the fun, fright, and flirty opening to the series with Southern Spirits, A Ghostly Gift happens after things are settling down.
Verity is determined not to do any more ghost hunting now that she can breathe easily about keeping her home off the seller's block. Unfortunately, just because she solved a murder and took care of a ghost problem this does not make anyone in town look on her more favorably and hire her to do a graphic design job.
But, her sister Melanie's friend can use her help though she can't pay other than in perhaps something from her second hand/antique store. Julie's store is in the old part of town and she knows its haunted which was fine until one of the ghosts started getting aggressive and breaking some of her pieces.
Verity agrees to the job and tows a reluctant Frankie along to help her figure out what has the angry ghost riled up.
This was a short, heartwarming ghost hunter case that has all the charm of the larger novels in the series. Again I loved the blend of small southern town, characters, history, and a ghostly case. It was well paced and well developed for a shorter piece.
Audio work was fantastic work by Tavia Gilbert. I think the scene of the ghosts at the bar just killed me. She did great work with all those characters and always does great with the recurring characters.
All in all, a nice delicious treat between the larger stories.
Three and a half I’d forgotten I had this and it was such a sweet and quick read that left me smiling. It’s early days when Verity was still getting used to her gifts and there’s an innocence and charm to her interactions with ghostly Frankie that’s missing from later stories. I do prefer the more recent books as Verity and Frankie ghost bust together but this was a whimsical tale about love everlasting and enduring that had an uplifting feel to it so I’m left feeling that there’s always hope for better things.
Verity Long is new to the ghost business. She has much to learn about the business and her new ability of sensing and communicating with the dead. Verity, however, has no intention of continuing in the unique line of work she fell into and intends to keep it secret from the residents of her hometown to keep from being further ridiculed. She prefers to hunt for a normal job with a steady paycheck. Verity accepts one more ghost job when her sister pleads for help for a friend with a ghostly problem before it ruins her business. She, and her sullen ghost sidekick, stay the night inside the shop and discover who is responsible for the destructive disturbances. Verity decides to aid the deceased solider in the search for his long, lost love and return her ring before it is too late.
Verity's character has not changed overly much from the first book. I still love her quirkiness and sass. She never fails to make me laugh and grin like a loon. I enjoy the sisterly bond Verity shares with her younger sister Melody. The author shows just how tight the two sisters are and how much both women care for the other by their actions and decisions. And Verity shows how large her heart is. She may not have plans to pursue the ghost medium/hunting business, but she does not refuse to help when it's needed. The lengths Verity is willing to go in order to complete such an altruistic task is heartrending. I did not believe it was possible to like her character more, but I do.
The only complaint I had with the story is that Ellis was not present. His name is mentioned several times and the author gleans hints to the state of Verity's relationship with him. Frankie's part is minimal but no less important. I do enjoy his interactions with Verity and other ghosts.
A GHOSTLY GIFT is a short yet poignant story that wrenches the heart-strings. A GHOSTLY GIFT is a nice filler in the SOUTHERN GHOST HUNTER MYSTERIES to tie me over until the release of the second full-length novel. This novella may be quick yet the shortness does not diminish the emotion Angie Fox incorporated inside it. The author managed to make me get teary eyed on a few scenes and the ending brought a soft smile to my face.
A Ghostly Gift is an absolutely sweet little story! Verity swore to her and her maybe boyfriend Ellis that she would never go ghost hunting again, that helping him was the last time. But when she's offered some free kitchen supplies, her pick of the lot from the antique shop in town, she can't help to say yes to her sister's friend that owns the antique shop. Especially since she had to sale everything she owned in the estate sale and is still broke. Also, if the ghost in the store keeps breaking her most valuable antiques their friend could be looking at loosing her business and Verity knows all too well how that feels.
Though I felt it was a little cheesy when the woman they had to find just showed up at the right time, it was the right kind of cheesy. Not going to lie, the whole ending had me tearing up! And if my husband wasn't home I would have been balling my eyes out! That's what military stories do to me, they're absolutely heartbreaking! And the ending, oh my gosh! I loved it! I was all warm and fuzzy on the inside!
If you loved Southern Spirits then this will quench your craving for the sequel! Angie Fox is so hilarious! When Verity met this 70's ghost I believe in the shop, oh my gosh, I was laughing out loud! That ghost was hitting on her and here's my favorite pick up line he said to her,
"Your name must be Lucky Charms because you're magically delicious"
I cracked up so hard my husband turned around, giving me a look that I was crazy until I told him why I was laughing so hard haha.
If you haven't already checked out this series, then it is a must if you love ghost mysteries! Another great tale to the series and I'm dying for the sequel! A must buy when it comes out!
so happy to say verity long and her ghost sidekick frankie the ganster is back- in this novella they help the owner of New For You antique solve the mystery of who or what is breaking and moving valuables around in her locked cabinet at night. first of all loved the fact that the store used to be a bar for men only and that it is filled with ghosts of all time periods dropping in for a drink and flirting like mad with verity when they discover she can see them--while talking with the guys she comes across a ww2 soldier and find he has been moving the collectibles around because the ring he gave his finace- that she promised never to take off- is in the cabinet and he is desperate to find her before she dies so they can remain together- naturally verity with the help of her sister melody start tracking down what happened to maime --- this was a fast fun mystery without any murders or verity having to fight for her life--- but if still had romance and a touch of magic-- and we learn a little more about what has been going on with our feisty ghost hunter and her trusty slightly shady paranormal sidekick- i was hoping to see verity and ellis interacting together but while he is still in the picture- apparently we will have to wait for the next book in this series by Angie Fox- which trust me will be on my kindle the week it comes out-- (if you have not read the first book southern spirits you can easily follow this tale- but more then likely you will get hooked on this series so you might as well grab this book as well) so if you like to read cozy mysteries with humor while curled up sipping something during this long cold winter- i suggest you grab this book which right now is only 99cents
A Ghostly Gift (Southern Ghost Hunters Mysteries 1.5) by Angie Fox
This was a book given for review.
We are back visiting with Verity Long and her ghost hunting ghost side kick gangster Frankie 'the German' Valentine.
In this novella Melody, Verity's younger sister, asks her to help her friend from high school who owns a second hand/antique shop in town. She has a bit of a ghost problem that is starting to damage some of the more delicate collectibles. Frankie is not into it because there is no money in it, just a kitchen table and chairs. Verity says she see what they can do.
That night she finds out that the shop used to be a bar and still is for ghosts, mostly men. There is a young soldier from WWII there who is upset because he is missing his love and now the ring he gave her, and she promised to never take off, is in the shop and there is a sickness around it that says she is dying.
Private Johnny Cleveland needs her to find his Miame Bee and get the ring back to her before she passes. Verity can't say no.
This is a wonderful little tale of Verity getting her feet a little wetter in the ghost hunting business without all the danger that surrounded her first foray into that world. A timeless love story that bound two together from 1942 to present day.
I really loved this story. A solid five stars. If you have not read this series before, this is a good story to cut your teeth on. Part of the series but easily a stand alone.
Thank you, Ms. Fox, for sharing your world with us.
This is a short story following Southern Spirits (Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries) by Angie Fox. The next book in the series is titled The Skelton in the closet. Coming out fall of 2015.
The main Characters in this series is Verity Long and her house ghost, Frankie the ex-gangster. Verity in the first book “Southern Spirits” came into a gift of seeing and talking to ghosts with the help of Frankie. Not really liking this new gift it did bring in money and solve a murder mystery from years ago. She doesn’t want her new talent known in the small town, They already gossip to much about her life as it is. So far only her sister and new friend Ellis know of her ghostly gift. So when Verity’s sister Melody shows up to ask her to help her friend Julie who owns a second hand store with a ghost problem, Verity being the sweet and caring person she is does it, as long as it stays quiet and she gets furniture that she desperately needs out of it.
Small spoiler: The ghost problem ends up being a soldier looking for his long lost love. This is a sweet touching story. I was given this short story for my honest opinion on this review and I had trouble loading it on my Kindle (not being very tech savvy) I really enjoyed the first book so I just bought it. Not a big loss to me it only cost .99 cents and it is a good story.
Would I recommend this short? YES and honestly I don’t buy or bother with short stories. But I really like the Characters and I don't want to miss any part of this series.
*** A review copy of "A Ghostly Gift" was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.***
This is a novella so it is a short easy read but that being said don't let the length of the story deter you from reading it. Angie packs quite a punch in this short story. She will have you laughing and crying and then she gives us that perfect awe ending we are hoping for. Verity quite accidentally has gained her own resident gangster ghost Frankie and the somewhat dubious gift of seeing "the other side" and you can find out how all this happened by reading "Southern Spirits"
"A Ghostly Gift" is a great story about true love that has endured through the separation of both distance and time. Verity helps reconnect a soldier who never made it home and the girl who never stopped loving him. It is a great little story that is suitable for any age reader and just might be the nudge that makes a young person into someone who loves reading.
A Great Quick Fix for Readers of Angie Fox and the Southern Ghost Hunter Series!
With A Ghostly Gift author Angie Fox delivers a sweet little snippet for fans of her recently released Southern Ghost Hunter series. This short story/novella finds Verity Long exercising her newly discovered other worldly communication skills, once again with the assistance of long dead mobster Frankie Valentine, to help out a local shop owner. As always, wonderful characters written into a great story, this time about long lost loves that never truly die.
Fox's tales ;) are the perfect mix of mystery, paranormal, and laugh out loud humor, with a hint of realistic romance to offer something for everyone. So take my lead, get out of this nasty weather, bundle up under your afghan with a cup of tea and relax for half an hour with Verity. This is a great quick read to tide you over until the next full-length book comes out.
This novella comes between Verity Long’s first adventures as a Southern Ghost Hunter in Southern Spirits and the second book The Skeleton in the Closet.
These books are always well plotted and written, with a great set of characters.
This is a really lovely short story that I enjoyed listening to from Audible UK’s ‘Plus Catalogue’, and wonderfully narrated by Tavia Gilbert.
Verity Long doesn’t want to see ghosts, and she’d rather not let anyone know her little secret, either. But when a restless spirit stirs up trouble in her friend’s resale shop, Verity and her very new, very dead gangster friend team up to learn what is really happening.
They discover an age-old secret, and must learn the truth behind a mysterious disappearance…before it’s too late.
Love this series! This is a cute short story meant to transpire between the full-length novels 1 and 2 in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series. Being so short (56 pages), there's not much room for romance, so Ellis doesn't feature in this one in person. Verity, along with Frankie the Gangster ghost, endeavor to help a local vintage furniture shop owner who's collectible case is getting rummaged through at night-lowering the value of her wares by occasionally breaking them. Cute plot line. Cute characters. Cute ending.
It's great to be back in the world of Verity and Frankie. This time around, Verity reluctantly agrees to help her sister's friend, Julie, with a possible ghost that's been causing a disturbance in her secondhand store. What she uncovers is a love story between a ghost and a living woman, where even decades passing can't diminish the strong feelings between them.
As is the case with the full-length books, Fox incorporates plenty of ghosts and mystery, humor and fun into this super short (like 20 minutes kind of short), story. It was nice being back in Sugarland, if only for a short time.
A Ghostly Gift is a novella that is part of the Southern Ghost Hunter Mystery series. The premise of the series is that Verity Long cleans up what she thinks is an ugly vase left behind in her home by her ex-fiance. In reality, she dumped out the ashes of a deceased gangster, grounding him to her home but giving Verity the ability to see and communicate with other spirits as long as she is with Frankie. Verity becomes a reluctant ghost hunter in the first book and she continues that unexpected calling in this novella.
As a favor for a friend, Verity agrees to find out who is haunting the young woman's resale shop and try to stop it. Verity is nervous since she feels she doesn't really know what she's doing, but I love the way the story turns out. The rest of Verity's personal life is just as complicated as her ghost-hunting activities, so there are many funny situations throughout the book. I would rate the novella 4.5 stars, and I hope to read more of Verity and Frankie's ghost hunting adventures soon.
Veracity Long, with the help of her gangster ghost partner, Frankie Valentine, get to see first-hand just what a love to die for truly is. Corporal Cleveland is trying to find his lady love, who he had to leave behind when he went off to war. They had sworn to be together through eternity,. Unfortunately he didn't make it back alive, but he has remained earthbound searching high and low to find her. He knows she is still alive, but she is gravely ill, and he must find her before see passes or they will lose their eternity together. Can She help this couple find each other and return his mother's ring which he gave to her in time? This is such a sweet story. And just goes to show not all ghostly encounters have to be grisly or gruesome. I loved it!
