Pine Bluff #1

Stormbound

Rate this book
What happens when a free-spirited woman is snowed in with the mysterious mountain man who rescued her?

Dropping temperatures, rising tensions, constant banter, and unknown threats.

Kaylee Waters is a loose cannon. Catching her boyfriend mid-thrust in an affair with her favorite barista was reason enough to bolt from Boston like a banshee in need of a Midol. Pulled from a bizarre collision by an annoyingly handsome mountain man, she finds herself injured and stranded in Maine during a blizzard.

Harley Kouris is a forest ranger. When he isn’t avoiding the nosy people of Pine Bluff, he is usually helping clueless tourists. Hardened from pulling too many bodies out of the forest after failed selfies with bears, he isn’t used to finding people alive, let alone so boldly defiant like the beautiful woman he rescued. He is used to wild, but not this kind of wild. Who knew a woman who keeps crystals in her bra, throws back iced coffee like a shot, and clutches pepper spray like a rabid raccoon could be so cute yet reckless?

While sheltering in Harley’s cabin, a fateful tarot reading exposes the truth of their situation. As days go by, they must face not only their growing attraction, but the secrets they try to conceal.

What is Harley avoiding? What is Kaylee truly running from? Will getting stuck together set them free?

A lot can happen when you’re stormbound.

Stormbound is a steamy forced proximity, snowed in, opposites attract romance with equal parts heat and humor. This story is told in first person narration, alternating between perspectives of the main characters. No cheating (aside from the affair that kicks off the story), no cliffhangers, and guaranteed HEA. If you love lumberjacks, look no further!

Stormbound is the first novel in the Pine Bluff series which will contain novels about wild women and the mountain men who love them. These will be standalone novels that are interwoven for a fuller experience.

Maggie Maren is a lifelong weirdo and misunderstood mystic. Combining her deep love for nature and romance, she enjoys playing mountain man matchmaker. Her stories transport readers to cozy cabins and the great outdoors, where kooky characters find love.

While earning her English literature degree, she worked as a bookseller, because clearly temperance isn’t her strong suit. Her curious ways have led her to some interesting forays as a librarian, professional tarot reader, crystal merchant, and some dark ages in corporate America.

When she isn’t scowling at her laptop writing, she is usually reading. If she isn’t reading, she is either dancing, sipping iced coffee, yipping at the moon, adventuring with her own mountain man, or ugly crying over a majestic sunset. She loves to hear from her readers, preferably in the form of a haiku, but hey no pressure.

DNF just over halfway
I was drawn in by the idea of a cozy winter cabin romance to fit the weather outside and my winter loving heart. I should've known to keep to my general rule of not reading books with shirtless men on the cover. 😂
I lost count of how many times I rolled my eyes in the first 100 pages. The dialogue, the characters... Then the next 100 pages were all long chapters of sex and more sex. I literally cannot believe this book is almost 400 pages, there is not enough sturdy relationship development and plot for that. What on earth could fill up the rest? I tried to skim through the next bit but just gave up when I got to the "conflict," I couldn't handle it anymore. Not worth it, not for me. This was not my jam.

This started with promise — the setup had that cozy, snowed-in tension I usually enjoy — but the second half really dragged for me. The romance lost its charm as the two leads fell into a pattern of petty arguments they couldn’t seem to resolve with any real emotional maturity. It left me doubting their long-term compatibility more than rooting for them. While I liked the premise and wanted to enjoy the dynamic, the constant friction and lack of growth ultimately made this a frustrating read.

I loved how fun and quirky this book feels! This book is instalove and forced proximity (snowed in), but the MCs still have to work to get what they want. It’s a unique twist on an old idea, and I thought it was so enjoyable!

Cute and quirky. A little too long in the middle and the drama seemed a bit excessive at times. Otherwise it was pretty good.

Super cute and romantic kindle story. I wish it was a little longer because the ending was rushed. Overall not bad for a “spicy” book. Would recommend!

millennial wet dream

The whole book takes place in the span of a week…. The “conflict” is elementary, honestly wanted them to just break up by the end.

This book took me way too long to read. I thought I was going to like this book towards the beginning. Quirky, cute girl meets sensitive mountain man and they fall in love…it seemed like a book I could just have a casual good time with. The whole last 50% of this book was unnecessarily dramatic, but the author does write some fantastic spice. She portrayed the character’s chemistry so well and it’s sad that I have to say the book just fell short of it’s potential. There are so many modern day references thrown in that it got to a point where it felt like the author was going above and beyond to be politically correct. There were so many senseless arguments that didn’t pair with the characters personalities whatsoever and way too many trauma dumps. It felt like the author thought “how much unresolved trauma can come pouring out of 2 people in as few pages as possible”. It got confusing and jumbled and just didn’t make sense. It also felt like she was trying to put the FMC into this “witchy woman, crunchy, liberal” box and purposefully trying to remove the mountain man from his. It just fell short for me.

“The sight of Harley hovering over me in his masculine strength and confidence made me feel even sexier. I was fucking a man. A red-blooded man who loved tasting me and had a way to fill me up that was so dizzying I simply wanted more of it.”

Kaylee finds her boyfriend/guy she’s dating fucking her favorite barista. She takes off and ends up in this small town of Maine. She almost hits a moose, crashes her car, and is rescued by this flannel wearing forest ranger.

Kaylee is an amazing FMC, she is a crystal and knife bra wearing witchy woman, who listens to her intuition and the pull of her cards. She unfortunately has a past with stupid men who just don’t understand her.

Harley is a hermit of a man hiding from his past, but is a very caveman like lumberjack daddy, who has carved out this piece of sanctuary for himself in the middle of nowhere.

Did this remind me of my relationship with my husband? Absolutely. I left a bad situation from my ex and found myself in the smallest town of rural Ohio. As a free spirited woman, finding myself a good ole country boy (basically a hillbilly lumberjack)… you know I loved this whirlwind romance.

4.5/5 ⭐️ 3.5/5 🌶

My witchy soul was so happy reading about Kaylee and Harley! This was a perfect winter book to get me in the mood for the winter season. You will love this book if you like dual POV, small town, forced proximity, protective yet sensitive mountain man MMC, flawed characters who are willing to grow and can acknowledge their mistakes, and fast and intense connections (they fell for each other in a week). She gets into a car wreck after she almost drives into a moose, and he just happens to see it and saves her since he is a Forrest ranger. And because she crashed so far from home and it is such a small town with a storm coming in, there is no where for her to go, except for his house where they get snowed in!

I really loved the characters and the connection that they shared. Kaylee was such a strong and free spirit who had crystals in her bra, read tarot, was in touch with her gut intuition, made dick vases, and had a boob knife. She was unapologetic about who she was and was sad that people didn’t seem to accept her for it (until Harley anyway). And Harley was a burly mountain man with a beard who loved his solitude, but that also had such a caring and protective side to him; he really was just wanting to be loved and cared for and didn’t really want to be alone after all. He was so good to Kaylee, a true gentleman. And they had great chemistry and banter from the very beginning (it was a really funny meet cute)…

There were multiple open door descriptive scenes. They didn’t rely on weird kinks, or intense dirty talk, but they were still so hot. The way they were written really let us feel that emotional connection and how strong it was between them. It was fierce and tender and emotional and swoony. Just how I would have expected a quick and intense love to be from a cancer and a Scorpio… ;) iykyk

The only reason why I gave it half a star off was because of the third act breakup (I won't elaborate to not give spoilers), but it has a HEA.

Stormbound with Lumber Daddy

I love a good small town romance. I love rugged mountain men and cabins built in the woods. I especially love weird girl representation.

Kaylee, a hippy witchy woman, catches her boyfriend mid-thrust cheating on her with her favorite barista. Angry and upset she takes off and goes for a drive, ending up wrecked and in need of a rescue.

Harley is a rugged forest ranger who witnesses Kaylee’s wild car crash involving a moose, a Christmas ornament and a fallen tree. He is quick to rescue her before the snow storm hits. With no plan and no car, he offers to let her stay with him at his cabin until the storm is over. After their week is over, can he convince her to stay forever?

This was such a good read. Sweet, funny, great banter. The chemistry. The tension. And man oh man, when the spice hits, it took me by surprise. Not because it’s crazy weird (no shame, I love some crazy weird sh!t), but it is some quality spice. Harley is a dirty talking lumber daddy in no rush for a climax, he is in it for the pleasure. Hers. It was hot, sexy, spiritual and moving. I couldn’t put it down, and couldn’t download the sequel fast enough once I finished it. Highly recommend.

Storm bound follows Harley and Kaylee. Harley is a forest ranger and a loner who works and spends his time in his cabin building fires, furniture and being a general lumberjack. Kaylee is a witchy, spiritual woman who’s stuck in Boston in a corporate job. Being recently cheated on and walking in on said act Kaylee decides to go for a drive and just kept on driving. Ending up in Maine wrecked on a snow bank she meets lumber daddy and as the story goes the stars align and the story is written.

Now about this book: the characters honestly are relatable. They are faulty, Not picture perfect human beings. Kaylees wit and banter honestly kept this book going while Harley was more broody in the beginning and slowly turns into a big teddy bear.
It’s insta love and neither want to admit it which created a decent push and pull in the book between wanting to follow your heart or the realities of their worlds.
It’s a little angsty about 3/4 of the way through. The spice is definitely there given they were snowed in for a week and what else are you going to do? But they also had some really good conversations between all that which broke up the spice so you didn’t feel like that was all the book was.

Stormbound felt like the characters were every single positive characteristic that could potentially exist: plus size FMC, witchy, long hair, quirky, semi-crunchy vibes, super lib, lumberjack MMC, golden retriever vibes, environmental warrior guy, cognizant of colonization... The point that lost me is that each main character feels like they encompass all these positive attributes about themselves, all of the hot key words and topics that people want in a partner, these people have them all.

For the first 50%..not much happens. The romance starts pretty early and the FMC can't stop talking about it. When I think back on it, a lot of the beginning is just the two MC's just talking about how great the other person is, in a very boring way.
"This woman is so cool and pretty"
"This guy is so good looking and cares about me"
"I just want to her to feel safe with me"
"I want to cook meals for him because he's so nice to me and I feel so safe"
Imagine that happening over and over and over and over...

I'm bored. I'm tired of reading how "quirky" and "cool" these two people are.

Overall this was a cute contemporary romance. The MMC and FMC held the chemistry and the story read like a smutty hallmark movie. My only criticisms are:

1. The dual pov going over the same storyline from different perspectives wasn’t different enough in my opinion to warrant the need to do so. I felt it added unnecessary length to parts of the book of which the context wasn’t especially relevant. This was overly true in the last couple chapters that had a vibe of “cheesy couple’s overly descriptive and gushy anniversary posts on Facebook”.

2. I was disappointed they really built up the whole “after the storm” anticipation and that fell a bit flat for me and was a bit predictable. I woulda loved if even like one chapter of her meeting his whole family was added.

This all being said, I enjoyed the book and would say if the synopsis intrigues you, read it. It was worth my time and at no point did I ever consider DNF’ing it. I am planning to read the next one as well when it comes out in a couple weeks.

Loved this take on snowed in, small town vibes!

Harley was such a great MMC! Rugged and loved his solitude, he willingly takes care of Kaylee when she finds herself in an impossible situation of being stranded with no where to go in a strange town. He really took her for everything that she was and was always curious about her rather than making fun of her quirks. I liked his character development of letting people in and finding his way through his own past traumas. I do wish we learnt more about his brother and their healing relationship it feels like it was a bit rushed over.

Kaylee was a really unique FMC but I enjoyed her! She was herself and never tried to be anything different even when men were making her doubt herself. It was nice that she wasn’t just a stock standard FMC, she had all different interests and such an interesting back story (hope we get more of her little stories in other books) I do think she had a tendency to get fiery before listening to others explanation’s which caused some unnecessary fights with Harley but I am glad that he was the one to keep a level head and work it out with words.

All round a good book, really looking forward to the next two!!

This. Was. Delightful!

Kaylee walks in on her boyfriend mid-thrust with her favorite barista and immediately leaves Boston. Taking a long drive with no destination in mind, she nearly hits a moose in Maine as an epic snowstorm approaches. Harley witnesses the car wreck and is relieved to find Kaylee alive. As a forest ranger, he is accustomed to traumatic events. He is immediately drawn to Kaylee and hosts her in his home throughout the storm.

These two have such great banter. Kaylee is a snarky, sarcastic, witchy heroine who keeps knives and crystals in her bra. Harley is a prepared forest ranger who attended my own alma mater, Oregon State University. Loved the shout out! These two have crazy hot sex and fall fast and hard for one another, while trying to keep their own personal secrets.

I really enjoyed the balance of light and heavy in this read, with excellent banter and chemistry. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

This author nailed it! Loved this book five much deserved stars!

If your looking for a forced proximity romance with a hot mountain man you must read this book. Harley is the perfect flannel wearing protective attentive book boyfriend. Kaylee is a free spirit who ends up crashing her car after running away from her bf she found cheating on her. Luckily Harley takes her in to ride out the coming storm with him in his secluded mountain cabin. This book as humor, romance and realism. I could relate to this story and the characters in a much more real way then most similar stories I’ve read.

I look forward to reading more stories about Pine Bluff seems like an amazing place. I can see this author becoming one of my new favorites can’t wait to see what’s next!

Beautiful Story!

This book was absolutely stunning!

It starts off slowly building their trust in each other as they have both been scorned in the past.

They quickly find their connection is too strong to deny though and it builds so fast between them.

The book only spans seven days initially but that’s enough for them to realize they don’t either truly want to move on.

They have a big BIG fight that takes them some time to find the end of but once they do it’s so glorious and beautiful 🥰🥰

I believe this is the first book by this author but o honestly can’t wait to read more about this town!

I want a story about Rosie and one about Dean and Carson! Sooo many possibilities right there alone! Ahhh!! lol

Ohmigod…grab a tall drink and a handful of tissues before you start this amazing journey. This book will literally blow you away! I cried so hard, I made those hiccuping sobs. My poor dog thought something was wrong with me. You must grab this book now—and get ready for an incredible read. The storyline is freaking awesome; the characters really tug at your heartstrings; the plot twists and turns keep you somewhat off balance; and the HEA is pure romance. You really need to add this to your TBR list today! (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and absolutely loved it!) ❤️❤️❤️

Every once in a while you come across something different that really blows your dress up and this does it! Never a moment when there isn't a surprise and all of them pleasant. Getting to know Harley and Kaylee was so easy. The way Maren writes you fall in love with the characters (except Tyler) in just a few short pages. I can't wait to get to know the other characters better and their story in the sequel. I'm sure they will be as charming as Harley and Kaylee because we see a teasing bit of them in Stormbound.
I would like to thank Maren for the beautiful eye grabbing cover when I saw it I was hooked. None of the cartoon silliness being used now.
This is a magic read!

Kaylee and Harley

Stuck in a life she doesn’t really enjoy Kaylee finds her boyfriend cheating and true to her nature runs(or drives) trying to get her head on straight. She keeps driving until she wrecks her car trying to avoid a loose. And is rescued by here very own forest ranger. They are thrown together by a blizzard and the days and nights alone in his cabin they find themselves seriously attached to each other and on the verge of live. After a few miscommunications Kaylee heads back to Boston lost and heartbroken. This spicy small town is a perfect cozy read. Not too intense but still spicy.

You know when you watch a new tv show and it is the worst show you have ever seen but you keep watching it because the cast are hot? This is that as a book.

One of the trashiest books I have ever read. Did I enjoy it? Yes, yes I did. Was the plot, dialogue and writing questionable? Yes, yes it was. Did I finish it? NO I DIDN’T- because the story was over by 40%. Would I recommend? Only to a close friend who knew me on a biblical level and would never judge because it brings my literary prowess down a peg or two. So yeah, it’s a bad book, but I didn’t have a bad time and enjoyed all 40% I could bring myself to read.

I aboslutely adored this book - so much so that I purchased the paperback once I finished on my kindle.
The story is beyond cute. I love how Kaylee and Harley interacted with each other, you'll fall in love with their characters and quicky become invested. I laughed out loud a few times, got angry, and may have teared up a time or two.

If you're a stickler for 100% perfect grammer, word usage, and puncuation - there may be a couple spots that bother you. But overall fairly well edited.

5/5 Will be reading again, and have already suggested to a few friends.

Ummm... this book was something.

The storyline itself and the writing style were good. I liked the whole witchy free spirit vibe of the FMC and the accepting and patient golden retriever vibe of the MMC.

But

it was about 100 pages to long at least. It was VERY repetitive, there was more descriptions of the settings and internal thoughts then actual conversations between the two, and the FMC gave me whiplash with how quick she was to anger multiple times. There was to much conflict that honestly didn't even make sense most of the time. 50% though i started skimming the rest.

This book felt like a contemporary old fashion bodice ripper with some new and original characters.

Things I liked: it felt like a memoir. Nailed the field office/forestry vibe, I think we’re all a little weird in the natural resources industry (especially in government) so I related to Harley, loved the witchy moments, side characters make me want to read the rest of the series, setting also made me want to read the rest of the series

Only negative: in my opinion there was too much and it could have been shorter while still keeping the feel of the book

I loved this book until about 40% in. It was so drawn out at that point I was losing interest fast! The spicy scenes seemed to only be there just to have spicy scenes. There was only 1 that actually added to the story. The rest of them were just filler I thought. I was also turned off by a lot of the wording. At one point I thought, wait did a middle schooler write this? But then it would go back to clearly being an adult author. This story line was good and it could have been a 5 star read if it was about 150-200 pages shorter and had better wording.

Overall this was a cute story. Fast paced in the beginning but then she does the whole back and forth with the love story to make the storyline longer (he loves me, he loves me not) I like the story setting and the overall idea of Harley. The writing is a little immature. I don’t like how she chooses to express her political opinions so frequently through the characters in this book, by the look of her socials it seems to be a common theme for this author so I’m not sure I will pick up anything else from her.

“Stormbound” has wonderfully written in depth characters. Kaylee and Harley have a deep connection to one another from their first meeting and throughout their journey. This story is entertaining with a collection of emotions, steam, and romance. Kaylee and Harly face conflict and some danger as they continue to learn about each other as their chemistry sparks. “Stormbound” is easy to read, a forced proximity small town- romance with a HEA. This is my first time reading this author, Maggie Marren. I will be re-visiting “Pine Bluff” and this series to see what happens next.

gripping and funny
I just loved the interaction between Kaylee and Harley - they couldn´t be more different but in the long run they are perfect for each other.
When you are looking for peace and quiet Kaylee surely isn´t the person to be around but there is no one better than quiet Harley to heal Kaylee´s betrayed angry heart and both of them deserve to find true love.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
