The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound #7

The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound 7

Rate this book
Randidly Ghosthound is not having a good week.

In his chest, a mad woman's bitterness pushes his Soulskill closer to an incendiary implosion. Out in the wider world of Tellus, he was ambushed by a Wight Propagator and left in a holding chamber to await a miserable fate. He has been left in darkness, with an unknown fate hanging over him.

But even drained of Mana and Stamina, Randidly has a few tricks up his sleeve.

After planting the 'seed' of his escape plan, Randidly heads into his Soulskill, moving amongst the Earth Golems, the Spriggits, the Weavers, and the Monster People of his inner world. Soon he must come into conflict with Alta Bounty, who would burn the world to the ground to understand why Randidly, the host of their universe, allowed her family to die.

Yet even after escaping, all that waits for Randidly Ghosthound is the war against the Wights. If he is to survive, and protect his friends, he will need to hold the defensive line against the endless horde of the enemy.

Because the Spearman of ancient Tellus myth is alive and well— having assumed the mantle of First Propagator and twisted the Second Calamity to his own ends.

And now the Spearman moves to bring his dream to light, annihilating all life on Tellus in the process.

I’ve enjoyed the series and it stands as a pillar within the LITrpg community

Weak to OP progression in this series. Relatable protagonist, brilliant writing in sections that you’d see from any great novelist. And some difficulty translating brilliant story telling into a system with magic/images and a different set of rules. Sometimes things get a little heady but overall this is worth reading and a lovely story.

5% Excellent, 60% Very Good, 30% Good/OK, 5% Unreadable

I enjoy the story - especially the imagery - and find myself reading on despite the slog sometimes due to certain passages of excellent writing - support characters on earth are subpar and unreadable - tellus was very good - please do not lose sight of story with meaningless detail into nauseating side quest minutiae - too many single note characters makes it hard for your reader to care or even be awake to catch your brilliance - you have talent others do not - don't strangle it

meandering

I enjoy the series. It’s got a lot of cool stuff and some solid writing.

But let’s be honest: the time spent on Tellus is weird. Important to the overall story, but somewhat tedious and not inspiring.

I still plan to buy every book published in the series. But as much as Randidly Ghosthound is a foundational work in the genre, it’s not an easy read the deeper you get.

Interesting developments

I enjoyed seeing Randidly deepen his understanding of what the Calamities are, and his role in preparing Earth for what is coming. I definitely didn’t foresee some of the events in this book, and it will be interesting to see how things progress because of them.

Honestly, I’m glad that the Tellus portion of the story is done. It has been important, but definitely tangential to Randidly’s work to free Earth from the System’s machinations.

Prreeetttty good

It was off and on for awhile, but it may be that I'm just tired of Tellus and the wights. Really liked the homecoming back to donnyton though and I'm excited to see the squads v randidly again.

Some readers might dislike certain choices made by the author. I'm no expert in the intricacies of skills, stats and how skills intermingle, so inaccuracies or incongruencies don't quite reach me. I have noticed, however, that sometimes the author might choose to prioritize character growth and introspection over factual progression but since the objective progression is so illusive to me, I'm not bothered. All that to say: this is a character-led story with RPG stage-setting and not the other way around.
Still, hard to believe how the big bads who've been pulling strings for centuries (?) were shook by the great legend Randidly Ghosthound and his waves of interference. lol

Love this series

Great characters & novel plot. I devoured the series in a few weeks. Unfortunately, being so immersed in the story made the errors that much more jarring. It feels like the books were written using voice to text. If a word had a homophone, invariably, the wrong one was used, i.e., past/passed, too/to, etc. Occasionally, a word was substituted that only sounded similar (someone for summon). There are also a few continuity errors like swapping characters mid-scene & renaming another between books and the like. The only thing keeping these books from a 5 star rating is the lack of a good proofreading.

This is the best entry in the series so far, and was a mostly enjoyable read with much fewer points where I had to skip forward past meaningless parts.
Book seven is better at dealing with the issues that plagued the previous six in the series. The beginning is still difficult to get through, as there is a lot of nothing meaningful in the world happening, but everything does fit into the rest of the story nicely. Whereas earlier in the series we'd get pages and pages of inner dialog happening, now it is at least split up with action from other characters. The motivations of many of the characters are flimsy and based in unrealistic emotional turmoil still, but at least more is fitting together to make it a more enjoyable read.
There is still idiot plot sprinkled throughout the book, but at this point it is just expected. It is a main tool the author uses to make something happen later in the books, it is just silly and easy to see through when it happens. Too many times the answer to something odd happening is just a shrug and the explanation given is a character is too busy to deal with it now; nevermind that was a mistake in every other book.
I'm hopeful but reserved that the addition of characters being proactive will continue, but maybe it will finally start getting better. It is odd for a book series to finally make sense starting with book seven, but maybe this is the rare exception.

This is a conflicting book; the good parts are very good, and the bad parts are very bad. When Randidly isn't lost on an acid trip of metaphysical mumbo jumbo, he's still a very entertaining and great character to follow. Most of the side-characters I just find insufferably bad and uninteresting. Randidly, again, picks up a mundane job for somewhat obtuse reasons and this didn't resonate well with me when he did it two books ago either. Just too much chaff and not enough wheat.

I'm DNF and will shelve this book for the time being. Normally, three lackluster outings should be more than enough to signal that it's time for me to just drop it, but I think I'm too enamoured with the idea of such a long-running series providing me with another dozen books' worth of entertainment. This is obviously challenging my confidence in my pattern recognition skills. Even money that I try to pick this up to finish it at a future date, maybe when the next book comes out, and people can't stop raving about how great it is that this series found its footing again.

Any book that can keep me up all night wanting to know what happens next is obviously going to be a cherished one. And that's what happened to me with this.

I really enjoyed the progression and the whole "as above, so below" structure to this one. The soul skill, indeed, a whole world-building AS a narrative conceit and source of character power is pretty awesome to behold. And not only do we get to visit as a god, but all changes work both ways, changing yourself.

If that wasn't enough, the full, bright story of the world of Tellus comes to a head, complete with the Calamity and resolution. Nobody comes out of it unscathed.

Very neat novel. Humble beginnings for the series, but this one really made it stand out.

My synesthesia tasted a wholesome ham on rye with really spicy mustard, oddly enough--with a dose of blood in the air.

Personal note:
If anyone reading my reviews might be interested in reading my own SF, I'm going to be open to requests. Just direct message me in goodreads or email me on my site. I'd love to get some eyes on my novels.

just not doing it for me anymore.

All of the philosophy mumbo-jumbo just keeps getting weirder and more abstract. It took me so long to finish this one that I’m not even sure what happened in it. I think it boiled down to wrapping up the story with his alien mentor and then coming home to see how things are going there again.

Also, I listened to this on audible with whispersync, and I am sick to death of the mouth noises from the narrator. Heavy breathing and swallowing and lip smacking abound. Sometimes I can ignore it, but sometimes it is all I can hear. There has to be a way to record someone speaking for 20 hours without picking up all of those noises.

I’m not sure if/when I’ll be willing to listen to the next one. I am fairly invested in the story at this point, but meh.

The best entry in the series so far.
A lot of story arches are neatly wrapped and it looks like the Tellus chapter is completed. The inner world thingy is tightly packed, the Spearman topic is tucked well and a lot of characters on this side of the system have their rewarding spotlight moments.

Like always, this book suffers from the same editorial flaws as all the other in the series as it should've finished 20 chapters earlier. It always feels strange how most books have a rather rewarding conclusion, just to ignore the milestones and awkwardly continue over the climatic ending to fill a double-dozen handful of chapters with unrelated stuff.

DNF. Like trying to travel up a mountain trail from a stationary bike.

You might love it and for you I am happy.

I think this sort of branching story writing is a method of self preservation for an author. To maintain interest and avoid burnout. Or it might be an effect of not starting with an outline? I’m arm chair critiquing and guessing. I skipped ahead again and again hoping for change. I’ve spent more time in stories other than Randidly and those that were the MC were also frustrating because they were also pointless.

About what I expected from this author. It's good but not great. The story is a little convoluted and the characters actions are just plain weird. The magic system and world building are immense and fascinating though. There is a conclusion of sorts on Tellis and Randidly then comes back to earth. Overall, I still enjoy the series.

Fantastic!

This series just gets better and better. The writer has kept the story moving along without bogging the plot down with too many distractions for the MC.
Really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to the next one!

good

Another good book in the series with action and humour. The one thing that bugs me is a character in the start of the book seems to disappear, he was in the last book then in one chapter at the start of this book but then…

a great story continues

This book was great. It wrapped up a great storyline on Telly’s and led into an exciting time back on Earth. Great progression and System-breaking as usual. Looking forward to what comes next.

Finally we are getting somewhere. Done with the boring story arcs, it was so dull I almost did not finish, but the development was better in this one. Now I am looking forward again rather than to pointless ruminations

Still Great

Still a great story and still great writing. No matter what is going on within the story, I flip every page like the fate of the world depended on it.

A vast improvement from book 6 which was very boring. This one had good action, moved the story along quite nicely, and just brought back the awesome tone from the early books. 👍🏽👍🏽

The ascension scene seemed a little vague and messy. I'm not sure how, or if, the world's population viewed the struggle — and thus the swing in images was a little confusing.

Good ending, unfortunately the first 3/4 were tiresome and confusing. I wouldn't mind slipping 95% of the story into soulskill.
