From the shores of a secret planet to the halls of power in Washington, Van navigates a complex web of lies, law, and politics, all so that Earth can be saved from the clutches of ruthless criminals.
But these people aren’t from Earth. In fact, they’re not even human, and they see Earth as a ripe fruit, ready to be picked.
That doesn’t work for Van and his crew, so he begins fighting back with the dirtiest tactics of diplomacy. Since the aliens are among us, and they want money and power, Perry and Miryam will unleash their skills to craft a plan that uses Van, Icky, and Funboy to stop the exploitation of Earth cold, for the enemies are led by a new player in the galactic order.
The Tsarina. She’s cruel, she’s heavily armed, and she’s coming for Earth—with a ship that can match anything the Guild has. With enemies at the door, Van finds out that Masters can fail, and secrets are hard to keep, and the Earth is worth saving.
Its amazing how this series continues to hold up even nineteen books later. The joy of the books is fantastic and I had a huge bunch of fun with them. Icky and fun boy forever!
Hello old friends - if you know this series, you know the characters by now. And love them all!
This one had a lot of innuendo in it, which is funny the first or second time and then gets old. And it got old. FunBoy had a lot of good lines. We did see some deeper insights into several characters. And a Wootster birth!
Jeffrey Kafer is always good on the audio. My only complaint is that the audiobooks take far longer to come out than the print versions. But for me, they're always worth the wait.
ANOTHER GREAT BOOK IN WHAT'S GOT TO BE ONE OF THE BEST SCI-FI SERIES EVER
Gone Nova (Backyard Starship Book 19) by J.N Chaney and Terri Maggert is well written, the cast of characters are well defined, it's action-packed, full of suspense and intrigue, and will hold your interest from the beginning to the end. I highly recommend this book and series to anyone who likes a great sci-fi series. I can't wait for the next book in this series to come out. I hope you will enjoy this book and series as much as I do.
And the story keeps going on and on and on! Van Tudor is now a Master Peacemaker which gives him a lot more authority than he had before. Fortunately, he has Perry, the AI bird, with him to explain and detail all the new power that he can use, if necessary.
But, first they have a lead on a place that Van wants to checkout for the future. It’s an Earth-like planet far from the normal travel lanes that is very peaceful and unblemished by civilization. Van thinks the might need a place like this someday, not right now, but someday so he’s going to check it out.
They named this new planet “Shhh” which alluded to the fact that it was very quiet place, very peaceful. That began building some facilities for living and were going to invite Adayluh Creel and her Father, Filic to come live her so she could continue experimenting with fast growing food crops she has already developed. Tudor and his crew sat up a twist comm unit so they could always maintain communication with the planet and also to ensure they always knew its location if they had to get there quickly.
With that done, Van decided he needed to get his Moonsword fixed or at least start looking for the twins. He had some leads but nothing solid and he didn’t know if he should really be spending his time on something that was more personal than a necessity. Yet the Moonsword had come in handy on several occasions and since it was handed down to him by his Grandfather, he felt a responsibility to getting it whole again. Yet, as always, some other things come up.
This time they got a request from the Ferals for a meeting to negotiate some differences. Of course, Van Tudor didn’t trust these Ferals one bit, so, using his new Masters powers, he put out a call for a gathering of other Peacemakers so he could have a show of force at the meeting and possibly thwart any kind of ambush. What they found out was that the Ferals were splitting apart with some of them now scared of the other faction that was now going totally rogue. What that means is that instead of just robbing people, they were now just killing victims for no real reason. This was definitely something Van was going to have to look into and put a stop to their actions.
But first, he had to make sure Earth was still being protected. The reason for his concern was from the reports he had just received about Fort Cantullin being attacked. By the time the Fafnir got back to the Fort, the attack was completely over and several tons of debris was floating in orbit around the Fort. Van sent Torina, Rab, Icky and Funboy to the Fort to check on the damage there. He was dreading they might find a lot of the Conoku dead or seriously injured. That wasn’t the case. Due to their excellent preparation, the Fort had hardly suffered at all and no one was seriously injured or killed. Now, Van needed to find out who was responsible for this attack.
He got a lead from another Peacemaker name Blustumol, a Gajur. The only problem with this lead was that this Peacemaker wanted to deliver the information in person. Van also got the idea that the information wasn’t going to be give freely and that was something he detested from another Peacemaker. Anyway, he met with the Peacemaker and his Second aboard the Fafnir. Surprisingly, this Peacemaker wasn’t that bright. When Van demanded the information and declared he wasn’t going to pay a dime for it, the Peacemaker and his Second actually tried to draw their weapons on Master Van Tudor! This was really dumb since they were surrounded by the crew of the Fafnir which didn’t take much to put an end to their attempted violence.
Still, they found out that the rogue Ferals were being lead by a Tsarina and Polite Citizen or a.k.a. Kiki Treasure. Of the two, Tsarina was the stone-cold killer while Kiki Treasure was a violent psychopath in her own right. These two had to be brought in before they caused any more bloodshed and especially because they were for some reason interested in Earth.
This is the same kind of stuff that Van Tudor seems to always get involved in. Even as a Master, he’s still out in the field chasing the bad guys. Unfortunately, this chase will cost him the life of one of his friends, but there will be new life along the way. This book was very interesting all through it and that’s amazing for a series that is already 19 books long. Book 20, “Point of Impact”, is available on Amazon right now.
Another cracking installment with joiners and leavers for Van and the gang
And so the story rolls on effortlessly for the two talented authors.
More and more enemies are lining up for Van and the gang - "a civil war inside the Ferals" plus a few more in this installment.
Obligatory quote time, “It’s true— it’s your color, Captain Handsome, but that’s not critical right now.” Icky raised a hand. “Excuse me, but that’s Pax’s nickname on date night. Use it sparingly, please, to avoid awkward moments of confusion.” Silence, then Torina sniffed. “Like this one.” Icky nodded. “Yeah, like this one.”
I'd never heard the phrase "ego leak" before, superb. "I cocked my head and couldn’t resist a bit of a smile. “Really? She was talking about me while you guys were—?” “Um, excuse me, Master Tudor, but you’ve got a little smug satisfaction on your face there. You might want to wipe it off— or would you rather I do it?” Torina asked, her eyes flashing. I raised my hands. “Sorry, had a bit of an ego leak.” I turned back to Funboy. “What are you saying? That I can trust her because she’s infatuated with me?”
As usual it builds to a crescendo of a battle with a shady character on Van's side. Or is she....
From the "Backyard Starship" series, book 19 Yes. Book 19. Wow. And I've read them all so far. And enjoyed each one. I think I've reviewed them all, too, on Amazon. It's a real challenge. I mean, how do you write a review on a single book from a series? Anyway, book 19 was great fun, and I'm looking forward to book 20, due out later this year. There is a ton going on in book 19. Van is making use more and more of being a Master. He's encountering resistance and the politics is getting nasty. He's still tracking down various factions of the multitude of bad guys but not he also has to deal with questions like, "How bad is bad" and "Is it ok to accept help from bad guy A to deal with bad guy B"? We do get a chance to have some fun on Earth, but, sadly, we don't get a chance to visit Frankenmuth. Which, by the way, if you haven't been to IRL, you need to visit there at least once. It's a must on any bucket list. All kinds of crazy things happen in Van's extended family. Good news and bad. I won't give any spoilers here, you'll need to read them on your own! Remember, read every day and read for fun!
There was a lot of action in this chapter of the backyard starship story. A lot of personal interaction, a lot of angst, some grief, some humor, you know. All those things that make a really good story.
I do wish the authors would stop killing off characters that I really like, and I dread, sometimes that the next book will kill off somebody else. But in this case, the book was so damn good it was worth it.
This is one of the serial stories that makes it worth buying each and every book. Do yourself a favor, start the first book and read the entire series.
Another fantastic written book. I was thoroughly engrossed in the story. I was really surprised toward the end, and extremely happy and sad at the same time for the characters in it. Chaney and Maggert are writing such an amazing story line, that can bring a person from heightened awareness, and empathy for great t hing happening to such sadness for loss of a friend, and at the same time bring an understanding with the loss of such closeness, and caring. and understanding. Truly amazing writing. I appreciate authors that can fly me to and through the stars on a space ship of family, no matter what Solar system each is from, but still friends and family. Please and Thank You!
So many things happen in this book! It’s kind of crazy!!! Love the characters, the writing and their action. New characters emerging, I’m unsure of who will be a consistent part of the story. It’ll be good though. Have to say the ending was sad. Unexpected.😢 There’s nothing quite like a series, and especially those with many books, that just continues to give and give, and still is able to catch you off guard or surprise you and it’s definitely a salute to these two authors for keeping these characters interesting and the storyline fresh. I enjoy their writing style very much.
This was a great read from start to finish. It started out exactly where it needed to and kept me going throughout the book. It captures your attention and keeps you interested. Our heroes van icky and the rest find themselves going back-and-forth between the guild and earth. They’re trying to keep the bad guys from getting a foothold on vans home planet. Throw in a couple more bad guys that want van dead for no good reason other than he is an honorable man and that’s what you have in this book. A must read.
Things are pretty incredible in Van's universe. He has what amounts to a mini nation with all of his connections and projects. I'm really excited to see things progress. It's also very fun to see his relationships progress. We're 19 books in and they still grow as a family. He's making great decisions for his career and turning into the leader he has to be. It's nice not having to yell at a character for doing something stupid. As always, I look forward to the next book in the series.
I've been away from the series for a while but I'm thrilled to return. I can see I'm going to have to reread the entire series again (just as soon as I finish the rest of it)! Also planning to get the entire series in physical copies. Okay, about this book...can't say enough good things about it. Full of surprises, heartbreak, joy and tears. Won't give any spoiler alerts, but will suggest reading the entire series from start to finish if you haven't already.
It gets a tad full of itself, but manages to pull it off with aplomb Lots of little stories along the way that have little to do with the main storyline, but make for interesting interludes. The ending makes for potentially interesting future threads to the story and as for Icky, well that's just a whole book on its own Overall a good continuation of the story, but I do wonder howany more this has before it ends
Waited for this book to become available to me. Have to say I was disappointed. The plot seemed all over the place with too many and often confusing storylines that seem in some cases to be unnecessary and then almost forgotten with a reference to them that seemed to be a reminder to the authors to pull them back in. Always been a fan but unfortunately this is a poor book. Sorry !
Did I read something? Did I miss something? Did I have an edible when I was reading the story-story, because when was there ever ship over what looks like a American city? I thought it was gonna be some kind of big confrontation reveal did it happen and I missed it ?
I love this series, the humour, thoughtfulness, the characters and the tech and world building. Van and Torina feel like old friends, have loved reading how their lives develop and the rest of Team Fafnir. This is a series I will read from the beginning when, sadly the series will eventually end noooooooooooooooooooo
I'm crying as I type my review, so the authors can be happy they elicited major emotions about fictional characters. Bad stuff happens (some of it is really bad). Gone Nova has the trademark humor of Van and friends. Linulla is always entertaining. Funboy is even more awesome than I thought. This series is amazing.
19 books containing humor; wisdom; technology; tactics, and just good sci-fi story telling. Start at the beginning, and enjoy the development of the story and the characters throughout this series. I don't think you will be disappointed, I'm not!
WOW!!! What a storyline and a great addition to "The Life and Times of Van Tutor!"
My title not the authors! The crescendo is building but to what ending? No spoilers here but everyone knows Wars take even the good. If we're lucky the bad too.
I'll be curious to see where things go from here. Keep up the great storylines!
Usually these long series escalate the technology till towards the end the only possible adversary would be God, never felt like that with this series. Logically he would be dealing with harder opponents as he got more experienced and no lazy god mode technology so far.
This has been a reliably good series - up to now. This one seems canned, and not near as compelling as the previous books have been. Guess it happens to the best stories over time. Time for this reader to try out something new. I'm going to try out some detective books for a while
I have been reading this series of books for a long time. I've enjoyed almost being with the crew. The way these stories are written makes you feel like your with them. I know this sounds weird but I feel bad when ever a character dies. This author is one of the best or best in si fi reading. Can't wait to start reading the next book.
This story has continued through much time and many places an remains dear and engaging.
The characters and story stay fresh and authentic because the characters continue to grow and develop and confront ever changing and complex situations with bravery, compassion and physical and mental acumen.
Stupendous!! So worth all the sleep I miss when a new book comes out!! Great characters and story arcs, I would love to be acquainted with the people . So exciting!!
Is the writing getting better or am I more invested?
This was one of the best writing this storyline has seen. Better edited, better plot adherence, better story telling. My only complaint is it ended too soon.
The Backyard Starship series has always been one of my favorites. However, the past several books have been outstanding and Gone Nova is no exception, highly recommended.
The BYSS saga just keeps getting better with every book. Great action and story. Plot twists and surprises as well. I highly recommend this book! Can’t wait for the next one.
