The bond between a boy and his father is profound. My Daddy explores it from the point of view of the child, depicting in simple words and deeply moving pictures the wealth of feelings evoked by everyday events like Daddy going to work, jogging, mowing the lawn, and telling a bedtime story. In a perfect union of words and pictures, My Daddy celebrates this complex and wonderful relationship.
The one thing that I liked most about this book is its pictures. They were so realistic and very detailed. It brought a sense of reality to the story. In every picture we see the kid watching his father leave off to do his next activity. The child clearly admires his father and all that he can do, but the one thing that the boy always looks forward to is when his father would come home, give him a hug, and play with him. This books shows the admiration that a child has for his father and that they are watching everything they do. An idea to show this book might be to share it with a child who feels like their father is never home. It might show them that other dads are often times gone too, but eventually they always find their way home back to their child.
It is a toss up between this book and The Red Ripe Strawberry as to which has been the favorite in our house. Have this book memorized...look carefully, the only animal in all the pictures is an elephant but the cardinal is most...
I loved this book, not only for the story and illustrations, but also for the importance that this author stressed on the role of fathers. It is a must get. It is a really, really special book.
