The first book in the saga of Caelen & Yvaine & I couldn’t put it down. Yvaine was the MacKinnear’s adopted daughter, she’d been found wandering alone as three year old then years later she disappeared, whilst her family feared for her they hoped she’ll be found. There was a folk legend, which the MacKinnear clan often told of a great love between Caelen & Yvaine & that loved helped resolve the differences between clans. Yvaine is transported back in time to medieval Scotland and into the middle of a decades-long feud between the rival MacLeòir and MacCarmaig clans. She learns that she's the long-lost daughter of the cold and ruthless MacLeòir chieftain, who wants to marry her off for political gain. When she encounters Caelen, the son of the MacCarmaig chieftain, forbidden feelings ignite between them despite the long history dividing their clans. As danger and betrayals threaten them from all sides, Yvaine and Caelen find themselves willing to sacrifice everything for love and peace. The book flows effortlessly & the characters ooze depth. I loved both Caelen & Yvaine the chemistry between them sizzles from their first encounter. They are both strong & defy their fathers, which leads to problems. The book finishes on a cliff hanger but luckily there’s not long to wait until the next installment My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
If you're a fan of Outlander you may enjoy reading this book and the next two that follow. Be aware this book and the next one are cliffhangers. I didn't know this when I was given a copy of this book to review and I'm not a fan of cliffhangers. Fortunately you don't have to wait for the next two books. The three books are available through Wolf Publishing. A magical pool returns a young woman to the past sixteen years after her disappearance at three years old. The life she returns to is of manipulation, greed and pain, but her destiny is to fulfill the legend. Kisses only. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from the publisher .
Not knowing where she came from, Yvaine is drawn to a cave which leads her to the past. But is it her past or another Yvaine whose story has been told in the future? Caelen was also foretold in stories Yvaine has heard. Is he her future? But the powers that be are trying to keep them apart. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
Like the Break of Dawn. My fellow readers, I think that you will like this book. I enjoyed the entertainment during some intense and passionate fights of willpower, strong determination and love. I enjoyed reading each character and their scenes. I could tell by the writing that the author really wanted the readers to connect with the characters and their story. The storyline has a smooth pace, but don’t let that detour you from reading the book. The number scenes of getting Yvaine MacKinnears back home. These events happens more than once in the book. Maybe if once or twice this particular scenes can happen in the book with the main characters Fergus, Yvaine and Caelen. After the third attempt, I was a little confused on if Yavaine was in the tunnel or at the bottom of the cliff, searching in the dark to go home. I would have liked to read more action scenes. Some that includes sword fights between the antagonists and protagonist. Having Yavaine handy with her bow and arrow was perfect. Hopefully she will have a dagger soon. I would like to see her skills as a fighter instead of the damsel presumed to be in distress when actually she’s more fierce than both of her fathers. I loved the connection that she has with all of her brothers. I believe these to be the most heart warming sentimental parts of the books. The betrayal seems to have a simmering effect in the story, but I’m sure that it will erupt like a volcano in the coming future. Yavaine’s biological father is a man to were you have to take a strong pill. I believe his character was perfectly written. For his character to spew that much venom and have that much callous feelings towards his own children. Humph. Beware of the eyes of March. That’s all I’m saying. Now what can we say about Lachlan. His character is another one that was written perfectly for the book. In the next series I’m expecting a WMA smack down between him and Caelen. I mean whose the heir and whose suppose to serve the Cheiftan of the Clan? I loved the storyline. This will be a good series for new adult and historical romance readers. I look forward to the next read. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!
I enjoyed the first part of this three part series where we find out what happened to Yvaine, the sister of KEIR MACKINNEAR from the Flames of Winter Series. This was the sister that just appeared one day when she was three years old and then years later she just disappeared again, never to be found by the Mackinnear family. Yvaine had loved to hear the tales of Caelen and her namesake Yvaine that she heard about while growing up. The stories tell of the great love between them and how that left their feuding families behind to start a new life. Their descendants eventually became the Mackinnear clan.
When Yvaine finds a new island that she had never investigated and a strange pool of water, she is thrown back in time hundreds of years. She is discovered by a man named Caelen and discovers that there is a feud between his clan and another one. The island she found herself on was considered Fey land and when she runs from Caelen she is captured by the clan he is fighting. Taken back with her captures, she finds out that she is the daughter that went missing when she was three years old.
As Yvaine tries to deal with her new life in a family very different from the loving accepting Mackinnear family. Her father, the clan leader is controlling and cold and he has plans to betroth her to a powerful clan chief, giving their clan an advantage in their feud. Yvaine has begun to wonder if she really is the woman in the tales that she heard growing up. If she is then her perfect match is Caelen so how can she escape her father's plans? This part one ends on a cliff hanger but will pick up in the second book in the series.
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review
****1/2- Yvaine MacKinnear travels centuries back in time to medieval Scotland. She is out exploring and the next thing she knows she is thrust into the past. She is the long lost daughter of the MacLeòir Chieftain. Why was Yvaine sent to the future? Why is Yvaine sent back into the past?
Yvaine meets Caelen MacCarmaig when he rescues her from his clansman. He is the son of the MacCarmaig Chieftain. There is an ancient feud between their two clans the MacLeòir and MacCarmaig.
Caelen and Yvaine are drawn together by an invisible force. Caelen is obsessed with Yvaine like a bee is to honey. His touch is magnetic and stirs her like no other. Can he be the Caelen from the legends she was told growing up? Is she his Yvaine who is his greatest love? Has fate brought them together? Yvaine wants to return home to the future. But can she leave Caelen behind?
They have great chemistry and watching them fall in love captivates the reader. They are both overwhelmed by their emotions. Their passion simmers and is ready to erupt at any moment.
The author weaves a story that captures your attention from the start. It is an enjoyable story full of adventure. The story keeps you on the edge of your seat while you continuously turn the pages to see what will happen next.
This is the first book in the Lass of Legend series. The cliffhanger at the end makes me impatient for the second book in the series. I look forward to reading the next book in the series! I received a free copy of this book from Wolf Publishing and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
I've been waiting for Yvaine's story with eager anticipation, and I was not disappointed with "Like the Break of Dawn"! With an adventurous spirit, Yvaine wanders into a world she has only heard about in historical retellings--from the past. No one knows how she got there. Perhaps the Fey sent her away many years ago for her protection? So why has she now returned? At first Yvaine's goal is to return home to her time, but is she able to leave her little brother and biological family members? What about her family that she left behind--who raised her with love and gave her freedom? And when she meets Caelan, the feelings between them arise even though they're from two different warring clans. Even though she's only known him for a very short period of time, it felt like she knew him all her life. Her grandmother told stories of the legends of the love between Yvaine and Caelan. Is this her real true identity? Can Yvaine live (and survive!) in a legend of long ago? Can she escape the prison and plans her father has for her, foregoing all the freedom she's ever known? She had never met such truly awful people as her biological family, selfish and without compassion. Instead, she had grown up in a place where there was respect and care for each other. Yvaine has many choices to make, choices that will change her future. But first she must survive. I thoroughly enjoyed the exciting adventure of "Like the Break of Dawn" and can't wait to continue the story in the next book. I received a complimentary ARC of this book and have voluntarily given my honest opinion in this review.
I had been looking forward to Yvaine’s story after reading the Flame of Winter Series. Although, I have enjoyed time travel stories on occasion, they are not high on my list when selecting a book, but Yvonne’s story and trip back into the past has me anxiously awaiting what is next in the magical world she unexpectedly finds herself.
Yvaine is exploring and falls through water and ends up 400 years in the past. She encounters Catriona who tells her the Fey sent her away years ago to protect her but she is you needed here now. Yvaine is confused, misses her family, and is trying to make sense of what is happening. She recalls the stories about a girl named Yvaine and Caelen MacCarmaig and wonders if this is her? When she meets Caelen she feels something special for him and can't help but recall the legends she grew up hearing about Yvaine and Caelen.
Once again Bree Wolf has given us a magical time travel romance, a forced betrothal, strong lovable characters, intrigue, danger, action, twists and turns, adventure and so much more. I loved the pictures that were included throughout the book and how well I was able to visualize scenes with the help of the pictures and the descriptive details provided.
Yvaine is torn between the feelings she has for Caelen (who I adore) and returning to her family and time and all she loves, or is her destiny truly where she is now with Caelen? I cannot wait for the next book in this series!
I received an ARC copy of the book from Wolf publishing and this is my honest unbiased review.
An epic love story that challenges even Arthur and Guinevere!
So you warned me Bree before I started that this romance was too epic to be contained in one novel! Which is the only reason when I reached the words "The End" suddenly without warning I didn't scream loud enough to trigger an earthquake! It also helped that the story captivating me from the very first sentence! So much so that I downloaded the entire series and thus avoided a delay in learning the soulmates' fate! As usual, Bree Wolf, you did not disappoint. Like the Break of Dawn is a magnificent adventure romance that rivals the classic love stories of the past!
I love everything about this book! The cover art and sketches throughout the story are awe-inspiring! The beauty of the art is worth a 5 star review alone. But then there are the characters! Even the sub- characters are so well developed that you would swear they are real. And, the growth and transformation seen in Callen, Yvaine, and the two feuding Lairds was masterfully done. The magic and wonder of time travel, the surprise of Yvaine finding herself the lead character in a legend she had grown up with, and the sense of adventure that surrounds the reader as the characters navigate secret tunnels and avoids capture, was fabulous! I was completely mesmerized and never saw the ending coming! Like the Break of Dawn is simply MARVELOUS!
Well done, Bree! It's definitely a bestseller in my mind! A wonderful edition to my MUST READ bookshelf.
Yvaine was found wandering alone when she was three. The MacKinnear clan has raised and loved her. Now suddenly she has disappeared. Where has she gone? Will the MacKinnears ever see her again? This is where Yvaine’s odd adventure begins. She recognized the place, has heard stories about it and the trouble between the MacLeoir and MacCarmaig clans. She meets Caelen MacCarmaig, a name familiar from the stories. She finds herself in the middle of the feud and discovers that she is a pawn in her father’s plans. Is this real, or is she dreaming? What do you do if you suddenly find yourself in the midst of a legend? The first story in this new series tells where Yvaine comes from and clues as to why. The story is full of action, schemes, mystery, and betrayal. With all this going on, Yvaine and Caelen fall in love. It causes a lot of trouble, but love doesn’t always come easy. The characters are very well done. There’s no doubt who the good and the bad guys are. This is an interesting beginning to Yvaine’s story. What’s next? I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
A wonderful story full of romance and adventure! This is a captivating time travel romance that completely captured my interest from start to finish. Yvaine is sent back in time to medieval Scotland and finds herself caught up in a decades long feud between two clashing clans, the MacLeoirs and the MacCarmaigs. She ends up there as the long lost daughter of the MacLeoir chieftain. He wants to marry her off for political power, but she is determined not to let that happen, because she needs to get back home. However, when she meets Caelen, the son of the MacCarmaig chieftain, she is undeniably drawn to him. But the feud between the families deems him as forbidden, yet neither can deny the attraction and pull they have towards each other, despite the forbidden feelings they have. The story was well-written with a smooth pace and the plot twists had me turning the pages anxious to see what happens next. The characters were well-developed and strong and I enjoyed following them on their journey. A intriguing and captivating story! I'm looking forward to continuing the series. I received a complimentary copy from Wolf Publishing and am voluntarily leaving my review.
As a three year old lassie, she appeared from nowhere. As a young woman she disappeared again to fulfill her destiny and save her family.
So, if you have already enjoyed books one through four in the Flames of Winter series, then you already know about the Caelen and Yvaine legend told by the MacKinnear clan. If not, don't be concerned. Like the Break of Dawn is the first part of Caelen and Yvaine's love story, but author Bree Wolf had taken great pains to tell their story is such a way that it stands alone.
As I read about this brave couples sweet love amongst the hatred of warring clans, I could not help but cheer them on. They are both likable, as are a couple of the supporting cast. Still, theirs is to be an uphill battle for a HEA.
Content 411: As with other books from Bree Wolf, this book is a clean read. But...be warned, this book ends in a real cliffhanger.
Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book from Wolf Publishing via BookFunnel. I am voluntarily submitting my honest review.
Yvaine and her destiny is nonstop action! It seems she was hidden by the fey entities and thrust hundreds of years into the future to preserve her life! Yvaines father is bully and the her brothers and her mother bow to him because he will exact punishment to anyone who thwarts his will! Caelen is from a rival clan and their destinies are intertwined! Caelen’s father would rather commit murder than see his plans thwarted! Caelen and his loyal friend Fergus had to escape to try to fulfill the wishes of Yvaine! Yvaine is brave, beautiful and fearless and she is not allowed to be that in this household! She wishes to return to the island to try to return to her previous time and life! When Caelen is captured she submits to her father’s plan to marry her to a powerful but disfigured Chief of clan MacLeoir! But that’s not her destiny, can the love their share rescue Yvaine one more time from her father!? Bravo can’t wait for the next read!
Well, this author knows how to make you feel sick to your stomach with unease-- throughout the entire book. Nothing gets to me as much as a woman that is stripped of her freedom, stuck between a rock and a hard place. If I fall back in time, I die hour one.
I wished this book and progressed further into the story. I felt like it was dragging on (why, I do not know) and it was frustrating to say the very least. That and the main characters HAVE to stop having long ass internal monologues and "moments" when they need to be fleeing. That needs to stop. She could have escaped Five times without that!
I am just unsure if it has truly engaged me enough to read the other two books. I was really hoping this was a stand alone.
Side note: I want to punch her "father", Lachlan, caelen's uncle, and caelen's father, right in the face. They deserve a quick knee to the nuts, followed by a punch to the face.
Yvaine’s Story Yvaine falls through time, living life like the stories she grew up with. This is a tale that twists and turns that leaves the reader screaming for more. Caelen and Yvaine’s love just leaks into your soul and all the pain and anguish they face with it. I truly enjoyed watching Yvaine’s journey into realizing what she left behind, realizing what she lost along the way. Being torn between two worlds had to be difficult and the author does a fabulous job of portraying that. Caelen’s caring attitude had me in love with him from the start and watching his world crash down around him was so hard. Truly a wonderful story filled with all the feels! Yes, it is a cliffhanger, but you would have read book #2 anyway, this is so good!
I received this book for free and these are my own opinions.
4 Stars I received a free copy of the clean historical romance Like the Break of Dawn: Lass of Legend Trilogy by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely. Most of this series occurs before the Flames of Winter Series. There is a lot of family drama where an emphasis on a Feudal- fear-power-based male-run system where loyalty, war, and power through arranged marriages are prevalent. It was interesting but long and ended in a cliffhanger. I was happy to have the Fey connection to Yvaine’s appearances and disappearances explained as well as witness the unconventional meeting between Yvaine and Caelen. The contrast between her parents was sad but the similarities between her brothers in both time frames were heartwarming
This book is NOT a stand alone book it is one of three in a series.
That being said it is both well written and spellbinding in that it carries the reader through time.
The characters are well developed and some are easy to admire and the others not so.
The reader must remember that the period that the story takes place is a different time with different circumstances and expectations.
The hero is brave and capable of making hard choices and the heroine is his perfect example as well. The author places the reader within the lives of the characters and draws the reader into the drama. There are many twists and in the plot that keep the reader on the edge of their seat.
Typically, I never give above a 4 star for an ending that requires another book for a conclusion. But since Bree Wolf is my favorite author for historical romance and it is inevitably clean, I couldn't resist. Another well-written Scottish romance that weaves the past with the present historical lives of two star-struck lovers who relive the epic fables surrounding them. In her melodic descriptive style, it immediately lures the reader to become part of the story. Having been thrilled to find this first book on free promotion, it is with sadness that it will be a long time before I know the conclusion related to the inability to afford $7.99 for the others in the series......
Exceptionally Entertaining Read. This is such a wonderfully written time travel read. Yvaine falls through a body of water and ends up 400 hundred years in the past. Her grandmother always told stories of a legend about a girl named Yvaine and an enemy clansman Caelen. There are many twists and turns in this story. Should she try to find her way back to her own family and time or stay and fulfill the destiny her grandmother spoke of. I loved the chemistry between her and Caelen. I can't wait for the next book in the series! Well done, Ms. Wolf.
I love Bree Wolf's books and I was intrigued about the story since I don’t usually read Time Travel books. I can honestly say it did not disappoint. The characters were well written and the story flowed very well. I loved Caelen and Yvaine's love story!! I can't wait to read the next book!! I highly recommend this book if you are interested in reading Time Travel Romance books!! I am glad I gave it a try!!
This was a fast-paced, swoon-worthy read, that I found I did not want to put down! The story was fresh, original and exciting with characters that are realistic and likable. It is everything you could want in a rousing romp through the pages of a historical romance and more!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
Their electric chemistry is instant, and despite all odds stacked against them, a star-crossed romance blooms between the unlikely lovers. Legend foretells that only Yvaine can bring peace to the warring clans. With the help of a mysterious seer, Yvaine embarks on a thrilling quest through mythical realms, wrestling between loyalty to family and her smoldering desire for Caelen. what a action packed story. I could not put this one down.
First Book of a Trilogy Yvaine appeared out of nowhere when she was three years old. Sixteen year later she disappears just as abruptly finding herself in the same place but a different time. Can she truly be the Yvaine in the Clan’s legends? A compelling story. Cliffhanger ending. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Brilliant storyline with a few twists and turns. Yvaine and Caelen are wonderful characters who invite the reader on an interesting journey. This book grabbed my interest from the very first page and wouldn’t let go. I look forward to the next book to find out what happens following the cliffhanger ending of this one. Take a chance and read this book. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
It's so exciting reading what happened to her in this story! I'm going to download the next one as soon as I've finished this review. I love this author and her hard-to-put-down stories! They are intriguing, romantic, and hopeful. I love the way relationships are written and compared, what Yvaine had in her future time compared to her biological family in her past. I look forward to finding out how she reunites with Caelen.
So happy to read the story behind Yvaine, adopted sister of Keir from the Flames of Winter and Whickertons in Love series. I loved the way Bree wove her story. When Yvaine time-travels back to medieval Scotland she is understandably confused and believes she's been mistaken for the long-lost daughter of the Laird. I am so invested in the story, I've already read book 2! I will be posting my positive feedback for that one as well!! Definitely recommend this series!
I couldn't put this book down. It was so good that it had me till late hours in the night reading it. The suspense was killing me. Never have I read a book so good as this one. And I've been reading for many years. Can't wait to begin the next book to find out how the two lovers finally get together. My anticipation is killing me. It's late this night and so I have to continue tomorrow.
I would like to thank the author for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I was excited to find out what happened to Yvaine, and the premise behind this series was really intriguing. The story was fast-paced, entertaining, and reminiscent of the film Brave (which I love). Yvaine and Caelen are easy to route for and I'm looking forward to the rest of the trilogy.
