Name: Arthur
Breed: mixed gorgeousness
Job Title: goodwill Ambassador

Oh my goodness, this book was just the tonic! I’ve very recently finished reading Irvine Welsh’s Filth and that book left me in total disarray. Anyone who’s read it will know exactly what I mean. So I searched high and low for a story to read that would put me in a sunnier frame of mind. As kismet would have it, I stumbled across Arthur & friends and what luck that was. It’s adorable. To backtrack a little bit, I first paw-friended Arthur in 2017 via his story in the book Arthur: The Do Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home. How to resist that face on the cover? How can your heart just not melt? I’m an absolute sucker for books which have pictures of animals on the front. Even if I know the book will probably tear my heart out, I have to buy them. As how else can they tell their stories, but through us?

Arthur is now happily ensconced with a loving family in Sweden (lucky he loves eating those Swedish meatballs, right!). This continues with his story, and is effectively “Arthur Book 2”. We crisscross time and revisit how Arthur was a stray, and as serendipity would have it, his path crossed with Mikael Lindnord. Being part of an elite extreme adventure racing team who were trekking across the jungle of Quito, Ecuador, the last thing Mikael expected was to feel an instant bond with a scruffy, starving dog, who was determined to either run or swim after his team. It seems that Arthur felt that same pull toward Mikael. It was simply a matter of their eyes met and that was it.

”We set out as a team of four, and came back as a team of five...he (Arthur) stayed by me as if there were an invisible lead between us.”

After much red tape, a herculean effort and many tears, Arthur (aptly named after the great golden King) arrived in his new home of Sweden. It was like he’d never been gone from there, he settled into the climate and lifestyle so easily.

In this book, Arthur is joined by his human on a book tour of the UK and Sweden. where not only Arthur’s story, but the plight of rescue dogs across the globe is brought to the fore. Their charity “The Arthur Foundation” was being created to help rescue dogs all over the world, and the book tour was the perfect opportunity to spread the word. Chapters on Arthur are interspersed with those of other very lucky canines who had the good fortune to also find their forever homes. Usually through the gargantuan and determined efforts of their humans to move them across continents to a safe loving environment.

Here are some snippets from Arthur’s friends' stories.

Billy ”...with Billy here, we have a home again. All Billy wants now is to be loved from the moment he gets up in the morning to the last thing at night. And he is.”

Ted and Zigge Stardust ”Blind dogs see with their hearts., and there’s nothing quite like the knowledge that you’ve made an animal happy. And they make you happy too...They will give you so much back…”

Camila ”...she is a constant reminder of the importance of being thankful for what we have and enjoying every moment.”

Teddie ”He is such a loving dog with a big heart and he knows exactly how to make you laugh, or how to make you feel better by putting his head in your lap if you are having a bad day.”

Sparky ”...animals can give comfort in a way no human can and they can communicate in the most basic, emotional and raw way - and I have never seen this more clearly than with Sparky.”

Ada ”There is nothing remotely aloof or understated about her. She wears her huge heart entirely on her sleeve.”

Lubomir ”...he’s taught us patience. He’s had a rough go of life and he brought those experiences into our house. But though it has been a slow process, he continues to get better and better. You can teach an old dog new tricks after all.”

Mr Digby (from Qld, Oz!) ”Digby has taught us that we all deserve a second chance...this boy was meant to come to our family.”

Duke ”His unconditional love and trust, considering his appalling start, are nothing short of miraculous.”

Golan ”The unconditional nature of a dog’s love is beyond anything you could imagine..”

Teddy ”...doesn’t like squeaky toys...the squeak makes him think they’re alive! He treats them like vulnerable creatures, and is very gentle when he is given one.”

Gaspard ”...waiting for me every day when I come home from work for us to go for a walk together...every day, whether it’s rainy or sunny, storm or snow.”

Dewey ”...he taught me..that life should be lived with quality, and that we have to be wise enough, and brave enough, to know when we have to say goodbye.”

Shakira ”They understand love. They can be happy and sad and they can feel pain just like you and me...they are loyal and will give you unconditional love every day of their life..”

Smiley ”He loves to cuddle, but he also has a lot of integrity and it has to be on his terms. Occasionally, if he is already in my bed when I get in, he glares at me, sighs deeply, and leaves. Other times he will curl up against me and snore loudly.” (I couldn’t help but smile at this)

This is heartwarming, and will make you feel all warm and gooey inside. I have to admit, that looking into the eyes of a dog, is like looking into the depths of a very deep being. Their intuition and loyalty is amazing. This book highlights all their fears, quirky traits, the things they do that make us laugh, and the completely unconditional love they give us.

Interspersed with fotos of each of the featured doggies, as well as Arthur, this is a comfort book. One to pause (dare I say paws!) for thought and smell the roses with. And to live in the moment like our animal friends do. Just be here now. There are definitely parts where you’ll wipe away a sneaky tear, but that’s unavoidable. As what some of these beautiful creatures have lived through doesn’t bear thinking about. But they’re good tears. What this book brought to the fore is how many animals there are out there (not only dogs) who are desperately seeking a home, and how people tend to overlook rescue pets or animals from shelters, preferring instead the “cuteness” of puppies or kittens. But what amazing companions these rescue animals make. Each and every one of the owners whose dog appeared in this book recommended that people take home animals from shelters or pounds, those who have a couple of miles under their belt, and a previous life story. As it’s the most caring thing you can do. Give another being a chance to live a happy and contented life.

What shone out for me is that not only were the dogs in this book saved, but the unconditional love and loyalty they gave to their new families. As if they knew how lucky they were. You cannot put a price on that.

It’s also interesting how most of the stories featured the words “unconditional” and “love”. There’s something in that for sure.

”I will never understand why anyone feels the need to buy a dog. Animal shelters are heaving with wonderful dogs...just waiting for a forever home. If you’re considering getting a dog, please please think about rescuing one. They may not all have pedigrees, but dogs are not accessories. They are loving lifelong companions and friends.”

Highly recommended, it’s delightful. 3.5★ fully barked, doggone stars for me.

First of all, this is the 2nd book about Arthur. I haven't read the first yet. (This seems to be a pattern with me, as I have done this before!) This book was interesting on h0w well adjusted Arthur was , not only in a totally different environment but to media situations, meeting new people, etc. But my favorite parts were the inserts...people from around the world telling how they found their rescue dog, the ups and downs of their experiences but all saying how rewarding it was. Read it because it does your soul good

I love dogs. I love their quirks, I love their unconditional love, I love their loyalty, and I love their resilience. I'm also a sucker for books and movies about dogs.
Arthur and Friends is the sequel to Arthur: The Dog Who Travelled the World to Find a Home. In this book we learn about how Arthur settled into his new life in Sweden with Mikael and his family, how Mikael came to write the first book, and how he and Arthur dealt with being celebrities. There was also a bout of ill health for Arthur to contend with.
Interspersed between the accounts of Arthur's new life, are stories of other dogs rescued by people and living their best lives.
This is a heartwarming book that has restored some of my faith in humanity. The world desperately needs more people like Mikael and the others who shared their stories of the dogs they rescued.
I hope these dogs all had long, happy lives in their forever homes. I'm sure Arthur and his friends made their families as happy as my dog makes me.

Jag rekommenderar inte att läsa den här boken när man inte är med sin hund, men det var en väldigt mysig och bra bok annars.

Lovely dogs!
But if Lindman already wrote a book about Arthur earlier, why is about a third (well, maybe not quite that much) of this book still about their meeting with Arthur in Ecuador? I haven't read the first book so it didn't matter except because I thought of those who have read it. I liked the stories about all the rescue dogs, but became a bit confused because they all ended the same way ("if you're going to take a dog you must take a rescue dog").
Great dogs 😍
