I read this book as research for one of the novels that I am working on. It had so much information regarding firefighters that I didn't know before.
A few problems I had with it were that for one, it was very po liti cally correct. It was also a little repetitive, but it is difficult to become upset with such a thing because it was written by different people. The main problem I had was that I was reading it for modern day information purposes and a good portion of every chapter was nothing but history, which is fine, but not helpful for my research. :) It was difficult to read though in one sitting, but it was good! I also have trouble reading books that are pictures and words because...well, I can't decide when and where to read the picture captions but that's my own fault, lol.
One of the final chapters, "The Fireman's Sacrifice" was a difficult chapter to read. (If you have been burned before, read this chapter with caution. It gave me a little bit of PTSD having had a second degree burn before. Uuggh.) It broke my heart knowing that our firemen face such things every day. I can't imagine what they go through on a daily basis. This book really opened my eyes to the fact that firefighters are some of the most selfless people alive.
When I was a teenager, our house nearly burned to the ground due to some careless neighbors. Thanks be to God, our other neighbor was able to call the fire department in time and they stopped it before it reached our house. I remember feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude towards them. Yes, I know, it's their "job." But each one of them played a role and our property was spared. A huge "thank you" to firefighters everywhere!
