I think this one was my favorite of all the books by RB thus far. Mostly because I loved Natalie throughout the series and I liked Chase for her.
While it did a good job setting up the potential for many other stories either in this series or for new series yet to written.. I also felt a bit disappointed. If you don't care to read my nitpicking grievances then pls move along. 🙃
Knowing Chase was a wolf but hadn't shifted, I assumed eventually he would. And yes, he did... eventually but it was made to be such a minor event that occurs in one of the final chapters and is quickly over. Next chapter felt hugely irrelevant due to Chase simply spending time with Leah and Rex talking about a bunch of nothing.
I felt the entire focus wasn't what it could be for this story. It seemed to skim the surface of many fascinating bits (Chase's first shift, Chase learning his wolf and how to shift on his own, Bodhi returning and meeting Chase for the first time & deciding to work for him etc) and that was just a huge disappointment for me and having now finished the story just leaves me frustrated. Especially because Chase kept talking about going to speak with Zoe before he got some of his answers from Natalie, but yet he never does. We see Blake and everyone else but no mention of Zoe. Even when Natalie's brothers and Chase's brothers in-laws all go celebrate at the bar there were mentions of Haylie and Leah and Leila (I think) but never Zoe. Zoe wasn't seen until the end when he's forced to shift for the first time. And that was frustrating because Zoe DID have a ton of information he deserved to know, specifically that Zoe was now a wolf herself and how that happened. That it's even possible for their sisters. I mean...where was the effort to keep the story consistent and continue what you start? Man, that was just annoying.
And why was Chase so concerned about making sure Leah and Haylie were safe and hellbent on investigating their husbands and would have potentially made them leave them if he felt they weren't safe and yet he doesn't say squat about Zoe? Um, she was mated to Blake and yet we never hear him mention any knowledge about this or seemed concerned for Zoe or Blake for that matter... Weird.
So while yes, I did enjoy this one. I liked Chase and Natalie a ton and they were hot together. I felt there were far too many stops and starts and lots of lost potential. The flow and smoothness of the storytelling suffered greatly because of the lack of consistent continuity in following up with details that were offered earlier in the story. I really wanted to see Chase sit down with Zoe and learn about their family history and what happened to her. But I guess none of it mattered. 🤷🏻♀️
