A cryptic puzzle. A family secret. A deadly betrayal.
When her father dies during a business trip to Romania, Kat Barrett blames herself for their failed relationship. She's racked with guilt, haunted by strange dreams about the crash that killed him, and she’d do anything to have him back.
Then a package arrives. It’s from her father and contains a list of clues — one of his classic scavenger hunts. Desperate for answers, she follows the clues to Bucharest and meets Maksim, a local with a dark past who offers to help. Kat doesn't trust him, but when she hits a dead end, she’s left with no other choice.
As they work together, decoding the clues while trying (unsuccessfully) not to fall for each other, the scavenger hunt reveals a dangerous secret the dreams have been pointing to, something Maksim’s old crime ring has been hiding all along, and Kat has walked into their trap.
Can she beat them to the final clue — and solve it — before she suffers the same tragic fate as her father?
Get ready for an exhilarating ride full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the final, breathtaking conclusion. Perfect for fans of 'Sherlock', The Bourne Identity, puzzle mysteries like The Da Vinci Code and Inheritance Games, and clever crime thrillers like The Naturals and A Good Girl's Guide to Murder.

This is a gripping mystery that I enjoyed trying to piece together. The descriptions are vivid and made me feel like I was part of the story. The story pulled me in immediately. I look forward to reading the next installment of this captivating series. This character-driven puzzle is entertaining, original and compelling. Thank you BookSirens for my copy.
Awaken the Dawn is an ambitious and intricately constructed novel that sets the foundation for a larger story. While my experience with it was mixed, I appreciated the level of detail and planning that went into creating the world and its many connections.
This very much feels like a setup book for a larger series. The world-building is rich, with deep family lineage, historical context, and interwoven characters. By the end, you can see how many of the early threads were intentionally placed and how they begin to come together. That level of planning is impressive and speaks to the care the author put into the story.
For me, the challenge was less about the story itself and more about how much information I was asked to hold at once. There are many important historical and familial details introduced throughout the book, and while they are clearly relevant, I sometimes struggled to keep everything straight as a reader. I often found myself wishing some of that background had been introduced earlier or more gradually so I could feel more grounded as the story unfolded.
The pacing took some patience on my part. The first half is slow and dense with detail, which made it harder for me to fully settle into the story. The second half does pick up and becomes more suspenseful, and I appreciated that shift, even though the tension never quite reached the level I personally tend to enjoy most. I enjoyed following the story, but I didn’t feel fully immersed in it.
I did want answers for Kat and understood her motivation throughout the book. While I didn’t feel a strong emotional connection to her, I was still interested in seeing where her search would lead. The scavenger-hunt structure was intriguing, and while detailed clues are necessary for that kind of story, the consistent level of detail made the experience feel more observational for me rather than participatory.
That said, this book does a lot of things well. The world is thoughtfully built, the connections are intentional, and the story feels like part of something larger. I also found myself slightly curious about the next book, mainly to see where the series goes now that the groundwork has been laid.
I think readers who enjoy history- and culture-rich novels, detailed plotlines, and thorough world-building will likely appreciate this book even more than I did. This would especially suit readers who are comfortable with slower starts and enjoy being guided through a story rather than actively piecing one together.
Content Note: The book includes references to drug use involving a parent and one brief scene that may warrant a sexual assault–related content warning. There is no explicit language, but these elements may be sensitive for some readers.
BOOK TITLE: Awaken the Dawn SERIES: The Awaken Saga, #1 AUTHOR: Ellis K Popa NARRATOR: Savannah Gilmore PUBLISHER: And Fire books FORMAT: Audiobook DURATION: 13 Hours, 4 Min, 39 seconds I received a complimentary digital ARC [Advanced Readers Copy] of this book via NetGalley. Thank you to the Publisher and the Author for the opportunity to read and review this title prior to publication. As always, the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Oof this book is simply one of the best books I’ve ever read. The writing is sharp, concise, and instantly engaging. I loved how the plot and the mystery played out.
The story starts off when Kat gets a strange text from her dad - nothing like how he normally texts, which raises immediate suspicion. Soon after, Kat learns the devastating news that her father has been killed, sending her spiraling into a cocoon of guilt, regret, and grief.
But then a package arrives at her door - it’s one of her dad’s classic scavenger hunts. Now Kat must unravel the clues and uncover what really happened to him. She has the blueprints to do so, but how will she ever figure this out. None of it makes sense.
As she pieces together the mysteries of the past, she realizes she’s about to learn more about her father than she ever imagined. But is she ready for what she’ll discover?
This was a fantastic read that kept me guessing the whole way through. Kat is a well-developed character that you can’t help but root for, and the scavenger hunt and clues only add to the fun of this story, making it a unique but intriguing read.
Special thanks for the book goodies. They made this story come alive in ways words alone cannot always do.
I loved the suspense, action and mystery in this. Kat travels to Romania after her father's sudden and mysterious death and embarks on a scavenger hunt that she believes her father has sent her. She is determined to solve the clues and figure out the truth behind her father and the secrets he's been keeping from her. Kat makes some interesting new friends in Romania and they help her uncover more clues, but also pull her into their own dangerous world. There are lots of twists and turns and multiple layers to the plot and characters, and the atmosphere is filled with intrigue and tension. I also enjoyed the growing chemistry between Kat and Maksim, their banter, and the mystery of who he really is. The last few chapters are very fast paced as the dangers intensify, leaving you curious what will happen next. This is the kind of book to read if you enjoy Lara Croft and The Da Vinci Code.
Ohhh this gave me all the Taken vibes! This started off strong and honestly had the action going g the whole way through. There was a hint of romance added in as well. The plot was twisty and I appreciated the pictures of the clues in the book. It was fun to look at and try to decipher before reading on. I read it in one sitting because I didn’t want to put it down!
Kat’s dad never talked about Romania, he said it was because all of his family and friends died in the revolution. Until suddenly, he did. And then he took a job in Europe, something he refused to do for all of her life. He’s supposed to be flying back soon, but the texts he sent don’t sound like him. And then his planes crashes. It was just the two of them and now she’s all alone, with no place to go. When she is packing up her meager belongings to move in with her best friend, she finds a package from Romania. It looks like one of the scavenger hunts they used to do when she was young. It’s in her dad’s handwriting and addresses from a person she knows to be deceased. He sent her clues to follow, and didn’t want anyone else to be able to figure it out. She’s going to do that to figure out if he was even on that plane, because the officials can’t even find remains to send her to put to rest. And when she sets foot in Romania, she discovers that nothing is as she was led to believe.
Thank you to Love Books Tours for the copy, all thoughts are my own.
Wow, it's a great debut novel. It draws the reader into the story from the first page. The closer the reader gets to solving the cryptic puzzles, the more dark family secrets are revealed.
The main protagonist receives clues to her Inherentance. The closer the main character gets to solving the mystery of her father's disappearance, the more the danger increases around them. I really liked this psychological crime thriller. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I don't usually read YA books, but I received this from the author during a FB giveaway and felt obligated to read it. I am sooo happy I did!
The first half is your typical YA thriller. However as I kept reminding myself, my teenage self would have loved Kat and thought that she was "so cool". I would have been able to imagine myself as her and absolutely would have loved this. The author completely hit the bullseye with this target audience.
Then I got around the 60% mark in the book. My jaw dropped open and I binge read the rest of the book! At this point the book picks up speed and doesn't stop.
That all being said, this is the author's first book! I wanted to get everything she's written, but this was her debut! Unbelievable!
This book takes you on a scavenger hunt through an area that I have not visited, Romania, Bucharest and that area of the world. The authors note tells why the story was set there and I found it interesting. It’s a perfect older YA book and I loved it. The clues and the characters are fantastic. I’m glad this is part of a series and I’ll have a chance to read book 2!
This is an enjoyable puzzle mystery book great for those who enjoyed The Inheritance Game and a good debut novel for the author. Overall, I give this book 3.75/5.
The plot unravels well as the main characters solve clues and the truth begins to settle upon the main character. I liked the two main characters and appreciated how the author wrote their chemistry. The story wrapped up enough to feel closure with the story and still left room for the story to continue in sequels. I also liked how much research the author did about the language and people she referenced. It made the story stronger and I think added to the setting and overall plot.
I think what was missing from this story, for me, is the the paranormal elements of the story. The description says this is a paranormal mystery, but the only paranormal elements in the story are alluded to or happen in pockets of the story that felt random. I wished this had a bit more direction and connection to the overall story, even if the author is saving answers in coming books.
Again, an overall enjoyable read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a quick puzzle mystery!
I received an advanced readers copy for this book through Netgalley and the publisher, And Fire Books, and this is my honest review.
While attempting to solve an arduous scavenger hunt that Kat thinks her deceased dad sent - either posthumously or immediately before he passed, Kat travels to a foreign country to attempt to piece the 🧩 together. Along the way, she meets a cast of characters whose motives she doesn't know and shouldn't trust, but can she trust them anyway?
📖 Awaken The Dawn is a gripping tale full of suspense, action, and mystery as you go on a mysterious adventure full of puzzling clues full of twists and turns unravel as the plot builds layer by layer until shocking secrets are revealed, with friends old and new, and the beginnings of romantic tension between two characters it's truly a gripping story and left me excited to read Dawn to Dusk. Especially after that 😱 ending! Popa does an excellent job of placing the reader inside the head of the FMC (Kat).
✍️🏼 Popa uses rich descriptions to bring this story to life. I've never been to Bucharest, or any part of Romania, but I feel like I got to experience it vicariously reading Awaken The Dawn.
Popa also keeps emotions running high, making for an exciting, fun read. There's plenty of puzzling of mysteries and working out clues, as well as lots of action.
I love and appreciate the time, attention, and research Popa put into ensuring that the language was both authentic and sensitive.
I feel the dialogue reads as natural and fits the characters.
⏳️I felt the pacing was great. It starts off at a run and doesn't really let up for any amount of time, until it sprints towards the finish the last few chapters. That's not to say the ending felt rushed, as it isn't.
I enjoyed how fast paced the action and mystery kept the story. I felt the tension on a truly visceral level. The scavenger hunt is fun and interesting, and leaves the reader guessing and trying to solve it along with the characters.
If you don't like faster paced books, this may be a bit much for you. But if you like your thriller/mystery books to have little downtime, like me, you'll enjoy this pace. I appreciate that character and plot development weren't sacrificed for the sake of a fast plot.
👥 I enjoyed the characters and feel they're well developed. Compelling and relatable, their backstories are as intriguing as they are nuanced - not to mention mysterious for some of them.
💞 Since it's YA, the romance is YA. I enjoyed the very light build of maybe a budding romance.
📝 The only reason it didn't quite get 5 🌟 from me is that Kat has these strange dreams coupled with a healing situation (calling it that to avoid spoilers) that could be paranormal or something, maybe. I didn't feel like that was answered and I kept waiting for explanation or something. Hopefully we get answers regarding those things in Dawn to Dusk.
📚 If you like The Bourne Identity, Orphan Black, Inheritance Games, National Treasure, The Naturals, or The DaVinci Code (Dan Brown) then I think you would like this.
I really felt it was a unique take on the mystery genre, with a scavenger hunt possibly sent by a dead man. Though maybe I’ve seen a Hallmark movie like that when they stumble on one in an old attic box or something, this had its unique flair.
As someone who has loved romance and mysteries since I was a teen, I feel like this one was a great read for teenagers. It didn’t feel too overly mature, though it did have some scenes that were a little tense, including a very serious near S3xual assault. So, parents need to practice caution and consider the maturity of their teens.
Those young at heart who just love a good thriller will probably really enjoy this one. It had a good, unique storyline and some interesting cultural exploration, including some exploration into the Romani people. It also used many Americans’ total lack of knowledge about world history and current affairs as an interesting plot line and social commentary.
I really enjoyed the story, and I especially enjoyed the two main characters and the blossoming friendship between them. I can’t wait to see how that develops in future books. I’m so excited to see that this is a series because I need to know what happens to these characters!
Anyone who loves a good teen/new adult-based thriller will love this. It’s strongly puzzle-based and features a strong but clean romance thread. There are a lot of triggers, so check the warnings.

Tropes: family secrets YA thriller Romanian mafia suspense/mystery scavenger hunt
Awaken the Dawn was so good! It's a YA Thriller/mystery and it had you thinking the whole time! I spent the whole book trying to figure out the puzzles and the scavenger hunt and I didn't see the last few chapters coming!
Kat, is an American who just graduated high school. Her father is from Romania and he's recently passed away in a plane accident while away on business. However, after his death, Kat receives a package in the mail with a scavenger hunt of clues for her to follow- this was something they did together while she was growing up. The hunt leads her to Romania where Kat joins up with Maksim- he's got family ties to the Romanian mafia. However, the two of them join up to solve Kat's father's clues.
Is her father alive? How did he send her this package? Where are the clues leading to? What message was Kat's father sending her?
So many questions! I really enjoyed the story. There was a little baby romance between Kat and Maksim that you're rooting for but honestly, I just wanted to figure out the puzzle before the book told me! I did catch a few clues before it was revealed, and that was exciting... Now to read book 2!!
Well, this is going to be a series I have to keep up with! This book had everything, tension, betrayal, secrets, romance, overprotective BFF, and clues!
The book follows Kat as she travels to Romania to follow clues left by her father, who died in a plane crash. Kat soon realises there is a lot more to the story than she first thought. Kat meets Maksim who offers to help her but can he be trusted?
I liked the writing style and thought it flowed well. There is some miscommunication that goes on and this is usually a big no for me if done to drag out the plot, but in this story, it works and makes sense. I really liked some of the characters we meet and they felt well rounded and believable. I thought Kat's grief was captured well. The dialogue and banter between Kat and Maksim was another fun aspect.
The story had me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next as Kat found herself going from one dangerous situation to another. Towards the end of the book this really ramps up the tension!
This was a great debut novel and I will absolutely keep reading the series as that ending has me wondering what comes next!
Huge thanks to the author, publisher and Love Books Tours for providing a copy of the book. This is my honest review which I'm leaving voluntarily.
What a sensational 1st book in the series Awaken The Dawn by Ellis K Popa is. It's an amazingly outrageous adventure. Kat's dad had sent her on a scavenger hunt with clues that lead to some information. On Kat's ventures across Europe to solve the clues, she came up against Maksim, who became involved in helping Kat out with her scavenger hunt, or was he working with the ruthless crime gang boss. This is a truly fantastic and suspenseful mystery journey, one I got drawn into from the off, I did have to put this book down for a little while because I received a couple of ARC books to read, and the story of this book never left me, coming back it I didn't have to go back to recap. This adventure has stuck with me. I not once guessed where this journey was going or how it was going to end, or who was on Kat's side for her or against apart from the obvious crime gang members. It is a remarkably outstanding crazy adventure, a must-read book. A definite ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This white-knuckled mystery fiction is packed with action and suspense. I was on the edge while following the story. It is unputdownable and easy to follow. I went through this one last night and I must say I am impressed even the ending was surprising. Can’t wait for the second part of this book.
I read an advanced copy of this book from the publisher, And Fire Books, and I enjoyed it so much I wanted to leave a review. The writing style of this book is fantastic. Great descriptions without going over board. It kept me on the seat of my chair as I wondered what would happen next. There is an underlying supernatural mystery going on that I cannot wait to find out about in the next book! Also the romance was clean and exciting to see develop! I literally could not put it down! There really wasn’t anything I didn’t like about this book!
Awaken the Dawn came out on March 26 and is a quick, easy read filled with a complex scavenger hunt, Romanian culture, bad guys, and a bit of a love story thrown in the mix.
The story is fast paced, easy to fly through and keeps you on your toes, wondering what is going to come next. At no point did I know what plot twist was coming!
Kat is trying to follow a scavenger hunt mailed to her by her late father after his passing, only to find out that things over in Romania are not at all what they seem… did she really know anything at all about her father? Who he really was?
I really enjoyed all the twists and turns and thought this was a nicely done YA Suspense story! ✨

Awaken the dawn is a book about a young woman who is desperately trying to find out what happens to her father in this book as he died on a business trip. I also love how the story starts in Atlanta, Georgia, which is the capital of the state that I live in and have been too many times. I also like how the author knows a lot about the Atlanta area and specific details about the town. I love how the author incorporates Romanian language and words and sayings in this book. I personally have never been to Romania but have always wanted to visit the area because I have family who lives in one of those countries nearby and my heritage is from that country as well. It all starts with our FMC named cats who is gotten a letter from Romania. I love the PR box that the author sent me while I was reading this book because she sent a copy of the letter that is in the book that Kat gets from Romania and the locket. This is a very fun thing to receive as I was reading the book! There is a lot going on in this book about Kat trying to figure out the riddle or the clue to the paper that she was sent, as the paper itself is sent in her father’s handwriting. However, there are some clues that are not adding up like the letter being sent from one of her dad’s close friends who died in 1989. As a reader, me want to read more of this book. I cannot say I did not put this book down until the end of figure of trying to figure out the clues to the letter. I think the author did a fantastic job with writing an intriguing thriller that leaves you guessing until the end of the book and even after, because the story is not done yet you can tell when you get to the end the author has much more to tell us about what’s going to happen in the second book. I for one cannot wait for the second book as this first one was very intriguing and I really enjoyed all the characters including Maksim, who shows up later in the book and him and Kat start a relationship. I want to see where that heads in the second book as well😊
I have to admit that I was very hesitant about starting to read this book or not. The cover was okay, the title of the book was interesting, and then I saw that it had over 400 pages, and that's where I stopped. I admit that I started to back away from books with a large number of pages precisely because they can get boring and drag on forever. But I took a risk and I'm very happy about it. I admit right away, the book is exactly to my taste. Ah, and then there's Maksim. A character that would make most girls want to live in books.
The whole story begins when Kat receives a letter from her father and instructions on scavenger hun to find the answers. Upon learning that her father died in an accident, she sets out to find the answers. The journey takes her to Romania, where she meets people whose trust she wonders if she can trust. There's also Maksim. A stranger who comes to her aid so quickly, with a murky and suspicious background. Will Kat manage to overcome all the obstacles or will she encounter a wall that will cost her her life?
So, great. The book thrilled me. The topic itself is great and I like that everything happens in Romania. Croatia is also mentioned because some of the characters are from there, which I was especially glad about because it is my country. There were perhaps parts that seemed stretched out to me, but not to the extent that the book itself became boring. Everything is nicely packaged so that the pages are just flipped through. And I won't even talk about Kat and Maksim. Her character and his are truly special. She is fierce and will do anything to survive.
As for the writing, there were parts that were harder for me to understand, but there weren't many of them so it didn't affect the understanding of the story itself. I can only say that I can't wait to read the sequel.
Big thanks to BookSirens and Ellis for providing me with this copy. My review is strictly voluntarily.
Thank you, @bookofmatchesmedia and @elliskaycreates for providing me with the book. I loved it. especially those clues; the physical copy makes the scavenger hunt better.
This is a debut?!!! I can't believe it. I mean, WOW!!
Kat Barrett, guilt-ridden after her father's death, receives a cryptic puzzle from her father. A scavenger hunt leads her to Bucharest, where she meets Maksim, a local with a dark past. She doesn't trust him, but she needs his help.
Together, they decode the clues while also fighting off their attraction and uncovering a dangerous secret about Maksim's old crime ring, which is a trap for Kat.
Kat must solve the puzzle before suffering the same fate as her father. Will she do it? What happens? Read the book to find out.
"Friendship is the hand that wipes your tears when life hurts."
The journey to solving the scavenger hunt was vividly written and well detailed, which made me feel like I was part of it. It was both dangerous and thrilling. Kat was amazing and a kick-ass character. I liked Maksim too, even though there were reasons not to.
This story is captivating, exhilarating, intense, and filled with twists and turns, secrets, lies, and puzzles. The casting is great, with well-developed characters and equally well-done villainous ones (I feel like hitting them). The writing was brilliant, with high stakes.
This is perfect for YA readers who love mystery, puzzles, and cool characters. This gripping tale is bound to pull you in and make for an unforgettable read.
I can't wait for the second book. The first had a nice conclusion with also letting us know to be ready, there is more to come. Also, for the one element (iykyk) I want to see how it will come into play.
Have you ever seen the movie, “Taken” before? Did you like it? What about ”The Da Vinci Code”? How’d you feel about that one? If you enjoyed both of these movies’ concepts, let’s take it a step further and imagine a project that brought both of them together.
Yeah, that’s this!
When the main character, Kat, loses her dad during a business trip to Romania, she blames herself. That is, until a package arrives from her dad with a list of clues hinting at one of his old school scavenger hunts. She heads straight to Romania to further investigate and ends up meeting this (SUPER FINE) badass who offers to assist her in her hunt; but as the two unravel each layer of the clues, a deadly secret is slowly revealed and Kat learns that not everyone can be trusted.
I will say, if you're not a fan of FMCs (female main characters) who may not exactly be the brightest in terms of seeing or catching red flags, this may be slightly off putting to you. While the character herself is quite intelligent, there were just times that I wanted to reach into the pages, shake her by her shoulders, and ask how she didn't pick up on certain aspects lol. But other than that, I found this story to be very engaging! From the scammers, dangerous neighborhoods, the sketchy investigators, the clubs, friends-turned-foe, foe-turned-friends, the fights, and the fact that this is supposedly to be followed up with a sequel definitely kept me turning the pages not caring that I had to clock in at work 4 hours after finishing it!
Whew, this book was quite a ride. I admit I was lost for a good part of it (more on that later), but wanting to know how everything turns out certainly kept me invested. The story was well-written, there were even pictures in certain portions which I thought were fun additions. The characters were cool, I liked our M.C. Kat, and I especially liked Maksim so much so that I wouldn't have minded being in his head for a while.
Now I will say I spent a large portion of this book being a little confused by what or mainly why things were happening. The scavenger hunt was a fun way to learn some of the history of Romania and see some scenery, but I felt like we were on this journey and solving these clues for quite a while without learning any significant information about what this is all leading up to.
Around the 70% mark, however, we find a letter and meet a character that gives us the mother of all info dumps and explains how pretty much everyone in the story ended up where they are now. While I was glad to finally be in the loop, I feel it would have increased my understanding and enjoyment if we had found some things out along the way.
Overall, I thought the story was very interesting, and it definitely kept me engaged. It did leave me with some questions, but I saw that this is the first book in a series and I am intrigued to see what comes next!
Thank you, NetGalley, and Ellis K. Popa for allowing me the opportunity to review this book!
Awaken the Dawn starts off by introducing us to the character of Kat as she goes about her daily life with her friends in Atlanta. Quickly the action starts to take place as she receives messages which are meant to be from her dad but she feels are very out of character. Two weeks later and it appears that her dad has been killed in a plane accident and it becomes clear that Kat is on her own with no adults in her life to help her. Into the wake of these events a package is delivered which can’t be from who it says it is and is revealed to contain a scavenger hunt, just like the ones, exactly like the ones Kat’s dad used to create.
We then follow Kat as she travels to Romania and starts to explore this new and unfamiliar location. As she tries to follow the scavenger hunt she realises that some of the facts her dad told her about his past might not be so true after all and there are questions about what is actually going on with his disappearance.
I really liked the character of Kat. She was likeable and realistic, making some poor choices and struggling with a new culture and unfamiliar landscape. She didn’t immediately trust Maksim but recognised the benefit to getting him on her side to help. I loved watching the pair of them try to keep each other at arms length whilst also recognising the attraction between them and the trust build between them.
Looking forward to seeing how this story continues in book two.
This is book one of The Awaken Saga and I think that this was a brilliant start to this new series. Packed with adventure and excitement, I really got Tomb Raider vibes from this one!!
When Kat's father dies in a car crash during a business trip abroad, she is plagued by strange dreams and wishes her Dad was there to help her to understand them. When a letter arrives from him, giving her clues to what looks like a scavenger hunt - just like he used to give her - she couldnt resist following the clues, but where will they lead and what will she uncover along the way....
This was just a brilliant idea. I love a good scavenger hunt so this instantly pulled me in. Combining this with a good mystery/thriller, I was completely hooked before I'd even opened the book!
The tomb raider vibe brought back some great memories for me, of trying to help my dad solve clues in his games - so I felt quite nostalgic whilst reading. I also loved that I spent a lot of the book trying to work everything out and making theories.
Kat was a great character to explore. Brave and bold - totally unlike myself - so this felt like a real escapism for me. There was a lot of travelling - again, unlike me - so it was great to explore the different countries and the descriptions of each gave a clear and vivid image in my head and made me feel as though I was there exploring with Kat.
The storyline was well worked out and packed with adventure. I'm pretty sure that there could be a touch of the supernatural too!
I loved this and can't wait to read more! I can see that book 2 is on its way....so will have to be patient - but this is going straight on my wishlist asap.....
Not even sure where to start with this lovely book!
As a big fan of Romania (my husband is from there, and I've visited many times), this was a wonderful glimpse of the country that shows its difficult past and unique history, its beautiful present, and its promising future. Everything was well-researched and on point, so if you have ever been interested in Romania, this is worth a read for that alone; the setting is incredibly well done and fully immerses you.
This is also the type of book that both adult and YA readers will enjoy - it's definitely something my teenage self would have eaten up. It's mature enough for teenagers without being over the top, yet also respects that teenagers can handle (and are interested in) a certain level of grittiness and reality. I think my teenage self would have identified with Kat in many ways.
I truly enjoyed the blend of investigation/mystery/thriller with romance. The entire book fit well together, and the author writes in an engaging way that keeps you turning the pages (there were many nights where I told myself "just one more chapter" yet continued reading for many more...).
Definitely excited to continue this series!
Thank you to the author for an advance copy of this book!
Awaken the Dawn is a captivating story that seamlessly blends mystery, suspense, and romance. The story revolves around Kat Barrett, a young woman plagued by guilt and haunted by dreams following her father's tragic demise during a business trip to Romania. Blaming herself for their strained relationship, Kat finds herself on a relentless quest for closure and redemption. When a mysterious package arrives containing a series of cryptic clues crafted by her late father, Kat embarks on a journey that will lead her to the heart of Bucharest, where secrets lie hidden beneath the surface.
I really liked the character development in this book, particularly the evolving dynamics between Kat and Maksim. The pacing is expertly handled, keeping readers on the edge of their seats with each twist and turn. The writing style is also very compelling, engaging and convincing. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style and it definitely spoke to me.
Overall, it is a fantastic and riveting read that had me totally absorbed within this story right from the very start, thoroughly enjoying every minute of this debut thriller! Would recommend!
Awaken the Dawn by Ellis K.Popa is such a thrilling, mysterious, cryptic and had such an interesting read. The beginning of the book was slow paced introducing the main character Katherine and how her father went missing. It was later discovered that he passed away from a plane crash. One day, Kat stumbled upon something her father left. Examining closely, she realized it was a scavenger hunt for her to solve. Growing up being fond of scavengers hunts because of her dad, she decided to pursue solving the scavenger hunt and possibly finding the truth behind his disappearance.
I enjoyed this first sequel of the book. I loved the Sherlock homes vibes and solving the clues and mysteries. Ellis K. Pop’s writing was such a surprise at the end. There were twists in the book that had my mouth drop open! The only con I wish was explained is trigger warning in the beginning of the book for possible *SA. Other than that I loved the Taken references and all the facts that were including in the book.
Thank you Ellis K. Pop for this thrill and journey with Kat and Maksim. It was a lovely friendship into lovers.

I rated this a 3.5 as it is a well written mystery novel, especially since this is a debut novel. The pace of the book is medium to fast and the story unravels at a consistent pace. It is fairly easy read even with other languages making appearances throughout. The world building was quite good and the story is predominately set in Romania. The character development was also quite good, although mainly for the MMC and FMC.
The storyline was intriguing and if reading purely for a mystery YA is great. The revelations that were discovered while the characters solved the riddles was enjoyable and the chemistry between the characters was good. The ending gave enough closure to the story while leaving room for further storyline. The main thing that was disappointing to me was the supernatural element. This was stated to be a paranormal mystery however the paranormal or supernatural element was so minor and hinted at so vaguely that it may as well not have been present.
All in all it is a solid easy read for anyone looking for a good puzzle based mystery.
I received an advanced readers copy of this book from BookSirens in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book! Action packed, relatively likeable characters. I was invested in the story. During some of the "resolution" narrative, I didn't follow it all as there are a lot of characters and relations and that sort of thing, but I got enough to mostly follow it and was not disappointed in the least by not being able to full flesh out the family tree.
My only complaint is that "trigger warnings" are listed in the beginning. I understand the need for some people to be forewarned of sensitive topics, but having it right there at the beginning had me anticipating/searching for these topics. At least one of which was barely relevant, like a historical one or two sentence recap that wasn't necessary toward the understanding of the story. So, for someone easily triggered, I feel like they could skip this paragraph and still enjoy a really good story. So, I just feel like there's a better way to approach this.
Overall, I would recommend this book as an all around good story. Action, romance, sacrifice, danger- it's got it all.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
