Having read several of the authors books previously I was pleased to find that DI Samantha Freeman, DS Jenny Newcombe and the team featured in this one.
I guessed early on the identity of the body found in the snow but that did not detract from my enjoyment of The Dead Husband. The pace of the book kept my interest and it was entertaining to sit back and see how the investigation would proceed and whether the culprits would stay one step ahead of the investigation team. The reasons for the crime and the relationship between the sisters Amy and Beth made this a gripping read. Thanks to the author and Bloodhound Books for an ARC of this book.

The plot rescued.this somewhat. Even though I worked out quite quickly what was happening, it was an interesting idea that set it apart from most thrillers.
I found the writing style quite clunky in places and there were some sentences that just didn't make sense. At times it read more like the initial notes than a final novel. The speech in particular was very stilted. It would have been a 3* but as it was an ARC I've added a star in the expectation.that some of the clunkiness will have been edited out of the final version.

I did enjoy this book. I did like the story and plot. I have read a few of this author books. This did go from present to past to present. That was a twist that I didn't see coming. Out of the sisters Amy and Beth I really didn't like Beth at all. Callum did surprise me. Jaw dropping moments. The ending did shock me. 4*.

Lots of twists and turns in this book, my first by the author Gillian Jackson. And it won't be the last.
A man's body has been discovered in a ditch. A wife has only recently reported her husband missing. It doesn't take detectives long to marry up the two events, and the victim is quickly identified as the missing husband.
Amy, the bereaved wife, is comforted by her spiky, opinionated sister Beth, although police are finding it increasingly difficult to come up with motive as to who would want to murder the victim whose life is bland and ununique in the extreme.
However, from then on, events take a few mind-blowing turns for the reader, and it's impossible to predict what happens next.
The pace of the narrative zips along nicely, making it a real page turner for me. I couldn't wait to find out the next twist in the tale.
Thanks to Bloodhound Books for the ARC.

This book was so dark. It starts out with Amy's diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor in which she has 6 months to a year to live. She doesn't tell her husband, Callum. He comes home and tells her he is leaving her for her sister, Beth. Amy wishes them well. Her sister is married and when she tells her husband, David, she is leaving him, he attacks her and she hits him in the head and kills him. Callum calls Amy and she helps them get rid of the body. Amy dies. Side story. The detective working on the case is living with her boyfriend, Patel, who is Indian. They get engaged and go visit his family. On the way home, they get in a car accident and he dies. OMG!

Gillian Jackson does it again !!

Another fab book written by Gillian that I couldn’t put down.
Amy has her life all set out but hitting mid 40’s married since 19 and no children maybe she needs a change in her life. However the change was not the one she wanted.
Diagnosed with terminal illness she faces up to having to tell her husband and come to terms with the prognosis but fate doesn’t allow.
A dead body found under the snow caused by a hit and run isn’t as it seems and the Police have their work cut out following the leads.
Well written story I loved the character of Amy always giving to everyone and never putting herself first. I just felt sorry for her and the path life had taken makes you question what we should do with the time we have!
Excellent read thank you!

I have read a number of Gillian Jackson books previously and this one did not disappoint. I’ve not read the previous books involving DI Samantha Freeman so wasn’t sure whether I would be at a disadvantage but there was enough of her back story for me to follow her story arc.
Gillian has a knack for writing believable stories from unbelievable situations and this was no different. Sisters Amy & Beth had a challenging childhood and both had married quickly in order to escape their family home. Neither were happy in their marriages although Beth possibly had more to contend with. However at the beginning of the story we Amy has some really bad news and it changes the way that she responds to the situation, the murder of her sisters husband Dave, that overtakes the sisters in the book. Without giving away any spoilers their lives are changed for ever and we see a very different side to Beth and Amy’s husband.
DI Freeman is trying to uncover the truth in the confusing stories that surround Dave’s death whilst mentally preparing herself for spending time with her new fiancés family which is unsettling her. With her team around her Sam finally gets to the bottom of the lies that have been told but not without the surprising help of Amy’s husband, Callum.
There is a very unexpected twist at the end of the book so I am now desperately waiting for the next one to come out! In the meantime I will be seeking out the previous DI Freeman novels to find out what other excitement I have missed.
This is an absolute must read - the only downside is you will probably not be able to put it down and it will be over very quickly!

I was given an ARC of this book but all views expressed are my own.

This book had me flipping pages, rolling my eyes, screaming at the characters, and stress-snacking — sometimes all at once. The premise was juicy, and it delivered on the chaos. Murder? Check. Lies? Check. Identity theft? Check. People making the worst possible choices on every page? Absolutely.

Amy was the emotional core of this story — complex, heartbreaking, and carrying way too much for people who did not deserve her. Watching her deteriorate while still protecting literal criminals was both devastating and infuriating. She deserved so much better.

And then there’s Beth. Whew. If ungrateful were a person… It’s giving narcissist with a splash of main character delusion. Her betrayal, lack of remorse, and sudden “reflection” in the epilogue didn’t hit redemption — it hit delusional villain origin. And don’t even get me started on her pregnancy being served as a redemption arc. 🙄

The plot definitely kept me engaged, but some twists felt a little too over-the-top. Callum pretending to be the man he murdered? Beth acting like she’s owed peace? The audacity was abundant. And while the pacing picked up in the second half, the emotional manipulation was a lot.

Overall, it’s a wild, dramatic ride if you’re in the mood for mess. But if you like justice, accountability, or not screaming “F**K BETH” at your Kindle… maybe.

It snowed heavily in the town of New Middridge. In a small hamlet, Hariett Smith and her children are playing in the snow. When she sees something in the snow that horrifies her. Thankfully her children hasn’t seen it. So, she tells them to go into the house. There is a body of a man half buried in the ditch in the snow. Di Samantha Freeman and DS jenny Newcombe are leading the investigation. From the first investigation the man was involved in a hit and run and dragged into the ditch, but further investigation shows he was hit on the head. They man was murdered.
Amy Cooper has just been told that she has a life ending illness. And that is not all, her husband Callum hasn’t come home and is missing. She decides to go to the Police station and report him missing.
DI Samantha thinks that the dead man might be missing husband Callum Cooper and asks Amy to identify him.
Thank you, Bloodhound Books, for and ARC of ‘The dead husband’. This is a cleverly written thriller and Police procedural and murder investigation. It is quite twisty and has a few surprises along the way. It is also about abuse and family loyalty. I know life doesn’t always go our way. But I was a bit disappointed about the ending. The right person didn’t get their just deserts. 4 stars from me.

After receiving a fatal diagnostic Amy Cooper comes back to her house to get the news from her husband that he's leaving her for another woman. The next day her husband goes to work and disappears, Amy goes to the police and declares him missing, is he really missing?
A woman playing with her children outside of her snowy house finds the body of a man in a ditch, could this be Callum Cooper?
Who is this man that at first looks like was killed by a hit and run?
Amy's sister Beth has always had problems of abuse by her husband and she has always been in love with another man.
The lives of all the characters in the book get intertwined in a sick relationship and even more so after a wrong decision.
There are lots of twists and turns in this thriller, some you see coming but most catches you by surprise.
I was glad to see again DI Samantha Freeman, DS Jenny Newcombe and the rest of the team, as well as Ravi, Samantha's detective boyfriend.
Very sad about Samantha's story in the book, that I did not see it coming.
I can't wait to read another book by Gillian Jackson and continue reading about the police team and especially Samantha.

This is an excellent thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed the many twists and turns.

Amy, after just receiving a devastating medical diagnosis, comes home to find that her husband has disappeared. She reports this to the police. Meanwhile a mother and children are playing in the snow in another part of town. The mother discovers the body of a dead man in the ditch. At first glance he appears to be the victim of a hit-and-run. But closer investigation reveals that he was dead before being hit by a car. Which prompts a murder investigation.

Amy and her shady sister Beth are called in to see if it is the body of Amy's missing husband Callum. They confirm that it is (but they are lying). Here lies the crux of the plot. They have gone along in a plot to conceal the real identity of the dead man.

There are many twists and turns in this plot and the police are led astray initially by the duplicity of the two sisters. So who is the dead man and what has happened to Callum?

You'll have to read the novel to find out. But it will be an enjoyable read.

Thanks to Bloodhound Books for providing me with an Advance Review Copy of this novel.

A dead man is found at the side of the road, buried in snow. A local wife reports her husband missing. The police put two and two together, and the body is identified as that of the missing husband, and it is determined that he’s been murdered. But that is far from the end of this mystery.

The story zips along at a fast clip as we untangle the lies and deceptions that stem from two sisters who are unhappy in their respective marriages. Even when I’d pretty much figured out what had happened, I was still hit with a couple of twists.

I hadn’t realized that the author has written several books using the same detectives, which makes sense to me now because I thought we were delving into their personal lives a bit too deep for a stand alone mystery. (Not that you need to read the previous books... this definitely is fine on its own.) However, one of the twists near the end involves one of the detectives and I must say, it really shocked me. I’m assuming there will be a novel following this one involving these particular detectives.

Anyone looking for a fast-paced, twisty mystery need not look any further.

Loved the cover!

The Dead Husband by Gillian Jackson

Amy Cooper’s husband, Callum, has disappeared. She filed a missing person report with the police. She thinks back to their last encounter, trying to figure out if she said something that may have caused him to leave.

A mother is out walking with her children. They come upon a dead body in the snow. It looks like the man was the victim of a hit and run. As the police investigate, they realize that this man bears a striking resemblance to Amy’s husband. Amy and her sister, Beth, are brought in to see if the dead man is indeed, Callum. They both agree it is him.

An autopsy is performed, and much to the police’s surprise, Callum was killed before he was hit by a car! Now, the missing person case has turned into a homicide. DI Samantha Freeman and DS Jenny Newcombe search through the secrets and lies to try to find the truth.

This book is a very exciting thriller! I challenge anyone to figure out what is going on, before it is revealed in the novel! Sit back and enjoy the ride. It’s worth it!

This is the 1st book I have read by Gillian Jackson and I have to say that this one surprised me.

I am not fan of multiple POVs nor when the story is told in present and past timelines but somehow I liked it. Author managed to drew me in from the beginning and I couldn't read fast enough to figure out what had happened to Amy's husband and who was that dead men who was discovered at the beginning of the story. Where they connected or was there something else going on?

If you are looking for a sad story about loss, grief, trust, friendship, secrets and lies, then give it a try. But be warned that some parts of the story will be really sad...

Marriage can be murder.

Amy’s life is spiralling out of control, days after being diagnosed with inoperable cancer she finds herself reporting her husband as missing. A body is found so his disappearance becomes a murder case but things are far from what they seem.

I really enjoyed this book and the pace was great, I really felt for Amy. A nice touch to follow the detectives life outside of the main story which hopefully will lead onto more in a series. One bit I did find strange was the secondary case of the three teenagers, it tied loosely into the main story but I really didn’t see the point. Thank you to @bloodhound.books for the opportunity to read this book.

From the synopsis, this was my type of book and having read some of Gillian Jackson's books previously I thought I would really enjoy it but this one didn’t quite hit the mark completely for me. I’ve not read the previous books involving DI Samantha Freeman so I wasn’t sure whether that would be an issue but it didn’t seem to affect the reading of this.
I enjoyed the Amy/Callum/Beth/Dave storyline, the two women’s backstories and the lives of the police team but didn't quite see the point of the teenager's case as it only seemed to tie in loosely. I also didn’t see the end concerning Sam but life isn’t always necessarily happy ever after.

I do like reading a book by this author, I always find her a good read. This was an interesting read, yes I had worked out the ending but the fun is getting there. For me this was an afternoon read as it kept me entertained. Yes the plot was unbelievable, but that is the fun in escapism.

Although I have read lots by this author I seem to have missed this series, I kept thinking that this would make a good series - then I read the reviews and it was part way through a series. Although I read it as a standalone, there were niggles for me so I am now going to go back and have a look at the other books in this series.

I was given an advance copy by bloodhound books but the review is entirely my own.

The Dead Husband. by Gillian Jackson.
Life is never easy … as Amy and Beth, sisters, can attest to …
From a cruel home life as children growing up with a violent drunken father to what life gave them as adults.
A lot of twists and turns as you navigate through this story … with a few connections of different characters intertwined through out the book.
For my part a few different scenario's going through my head as I got further into the book.
I have never read a below par book from this author, Gillian Jackson. A great author who makes you wanting more books of hers to read …. I have learnt to be patient as perfection takes time.
Her books are more some! My recommendation to read all her books!

This is quite a complex book, with twists and turns, and a number of surprises. It is hard to summarise the plot without giving some of these away. A character with a terminal illness, two sisters scarred by their abusive father leading both to escape into unsatisfactory marriages. Then there is the detective, happy in her relationship but nervous about how she will be accepted by her future in laws. Bad things happen, but there is also a lot of love and some hope. A compelling story that keeps the reader’s attention. Not quite what I expected, with parts that made me very sad, but an interesting read.

I liked this. It moved quickly and there were a few good twists. I liked the dynamic between the police characters, although the ending was a bit unnecessary for me. I look forward to reading more in the series to see how it develops, and will look out for the previous ones.
I liked the way the crime unravelled and how the back story fell apart. Was it believable? Possibly not, but it was well written enough that it didn't matter. I liked how character driven the whole story was.
I read an ARC from Bloodhound books.

The 2024 Dysfunctional Award goes to Amy Cooper and her family! Amy is having a very bad day! She has just been told by her doctor that she has a very aggressive and inoperable brain tumor and since her husband never came home after work, she has had to go to the Police and report him missing. When a dead body is discovered, Amy verifies that it is indeed her missing husband. From there the secrets and lies come fast and furious! I really enjoyed this creative, dark, and twisty thriller. I thank Bloodhound Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This is an author that I have enjoyed reading from the first book I picked up by her. I enjoy her writing style and attention to details that make the story realistic. This is a well written story that is full of secrets and lies. I enjoyed how the characters pulled me into their story from the start. They are strong, engaging characters that have great growth throughout. The twist and turns had me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what would happen next. This is one you don't want to miss. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.

It seems things just go from bad to worse for Amy Cooper. I was totally shocked with the twist that took place in this story! How could people that supposably loved her could do such a thing? I understand her sister wanting an end to her marriage from that abusive good for nothing, but the way things went down was NOT what I thought happened! Ms. Jackson leads the reader down a path only to trip them up!!! Job well done! I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Amy receives a devastating diagnosis, she has an inoperable brain tumour; then her husband goes missing. Her sister, Beth, offers support, although Amy has not told her about the diagnosis.
A body is found and the sisters identify it as Callum, Amy's missing husband. It looks like a hit and run.
But then everything changes.
Well written and I could hardly put it down, not at all what I expected!
