While jogging with Drusilla, the awkward puppy drags me right into a tangle of leashes with another pooch and his person.
For the dogs, it’s puppy love at first sight. For us humans, well, I’m certainly not complaining when I get a look at who she’s tangled me with.
Tall, dark, and handsome: this must be Markus, the town’s new veterinarian.
More than one gossiping granny has suggested he’d be perfect for me. Pump the breaks, Gladys, we don’t even know if Krause’s new resident is gay.
Though the dazzling smile he just gave me sure holds a lot of promise.
Hearts We Claim is a sexy, full-length, small town, male/male dog dads romance. Featuring a sexy firefighter hero and the town's new veterinarian, this is Book Three of the Hearts of Texas series, but it can be read as a standalone.

What a wonderful book. I loved Markus and Adam(Rooster). This is one of those books that are just so delightful to read. I could hardly put it down. I especially enjoy stories that include dogs or children so this was a great read for me. Rufus and Drusilla added the perfect touch to a heartwarming tale. If you’re looking for a story to make you just feel good I highly recommend reading this book.
This is such a sweet book te read. I love Adam, he is just so open, positive and funny. Markus really goes through alot in this book. I really feel for him.
✎ This book was all about support, support and support and I love it,the way Adam’s mom and Sisters stood by him and the way his mother chose to protect him over everything was just beautiful.
✎ Adam and Markus are such great match, and they had such good chemistry and moments. They both just needed to communicate with each other and after they got that part locked down, everything was smooth sailing from there on.They were just two people who really enjoyed each other’s company and makes each other happy. They are each other’s breath of fresh air and peace. And they both deserved the happy ending they got.
✎ The community is this book is very beautiful,I loved the way the show up and show out,the way they help each other and stand by each other. It was one of my favorite moment in the book, the way they stood by Adam when he was a child and the way they showed up for Markus after what happened to him was just amazing and admirable.
Adam, aka Rooster to his small town in Texas, officially meets the new town veterinarian, Markus, after they literally run into each other while jogging with their dogs. Though Drusilla, loved the Buffy reference btw, is actually a resident at Adam’s mothers animal rescue, her and Rufus, Markus’ dog, become obsessed with each other instantly. Adam and Markus are also instantly attracted to the other, but they have a longer road to finding their way!
This was a sweet story that made me laugh just as much as feel for these characters as the story progressed. The town and its cast of endearing, yet overbearing loved ones, that rounded out this story made for a barrel of laughs and lots of heartwarming moments. Adam and Markus are wonderful together throughout the whole book as they figure out how to navigate their feelings alongside the story's events.
Adored the pups too! They were champions of the book, alongside the lovely townsfolk and Adam’s sisters and Mother.
This was so good, I loved it. Markus had a bad childhood and his parents weren't people you could count on. But despite all that, he turned out to be a good man. He was hesitant with Adam because he didn't know if the feelings were mutual or not which is totally understandable. Adam only was with people that were out of town, he felt like he needed to respect the people in it by not being with anyone. Which couldn't be further from the truth. They came together and start with friendship but then they can't hide their attraction for long and it all evolves from there. They were who they were and they weren't afraid or embarassed to be together. And the town was supportive and happy for them
If you think you have a bad day, Markus got it so much worst than you. Man cannot catch a break.
Markus' new in town and a veterinarian. When he was jogging and walking his dog, he became literally entangled with another dog and its walker, the firefighter Adam.
I love me some firefighter romance and it's MM? Count me in.
Let me go back to my first sentence. Everything bad that you will think will happen to a person, happened to Markus. Poor guy! Every plot twists was wrapped with him, and Adam was just along for the ride.
I love their meet-cute, especially the dogs. They started as jogging buddies while getting to know each other. I love the yearning in both parties which was so endearing to see in their POVs.
We got enough emotional-depth between the characters but I didn't really enjoy the plot twists because it's just one after the other and I wished we just had one and focused on that instead of a lot happening so that kinda hindered the romance a bit imo.
Overall, it's a short and quick read. I read it in one-sitting and I enjoyed some parts of it. All fun, with great vibes!
Light and entertaining read! Cute, wholesome…umm…mostly…with some edgy twists. It's part of a series of MF books, but I haven't read any of the others and wasn't at all confused.
New vet in a small town strikes sparks with gregarious firefighter when their two dogs meet and decide they’re bestest buddies. 🔥🔥
I enjoyed this a lot! Adam’s the outgoing firefighter ,a man with his own influencer persona and the love of the town. He’s the only gay man in town, as far as he knows, and goes…elsewhere for Things.
New vet Markus was thrilled to find a practice with no competition for miles, with living quarters above the clinic. His quite enthusiastic reception from the town is a bit unexpected and alarming to him…but the townsfolk are delighted to have him. And are kind and fun.
When their dogs Drusilla and Rufus meet, their leashes entangle, their eyes meet, and so starts a series of events that will keep these two crossing paths and becoming susceptible to the chemistry growing between them.
With two matchmaking pooches, one well-timed misunderstanding, well-meaning family members, some traumatic and tragic events, and one timely (but dangerous!) crime, these two don’t stand a chance at staying apart for long.
My favorite part was Markus’s reaction to finding out why Adam has condoms and lube in a go-bag. It was the exact reaction I always want to see and rarely get. Ha ha. It’s not funny, but, was the perfect touch for me, full of conflict and hurt and bad timing. 😱💕
I loved Adam’s family, even when his sisters were kinda OTT and at one point annoying. Still liked them!
It’s mostly a sweet story, but the plot beats have bite, which was an interesting and engaging combo for me.
HEA, small-town, new guy meets firefighter, cute dogs (one of whom is an amazing protector!), family and found family moments. TWs for death of a parent and homophobia, and a touch of violence at one time. NO others or sharing or info on any specific exes (Adam doesn’t have any relationship history; he has only hooked up but doesn’t seem like a man-ho, and nothing’s specified for Markus. The past is the past!). Safe for me! Recommended.
✨ARC Review ✨ I like to think that there are places out there that are as incredible as Christina describes Krause TX. The way that the community truly cares for each other & all of the residents never hesitate to step up & help out when anyone needs help. They’re not looking for praise, recognition or something they can brag about to others. They’re just there for one another. As I always say I don’t know exactly how Christina does it but the way she writes always gives me goosebumps because I can FEEL the emotions throughout this book. Rooster knows that his community accepts him as a gay man but he’s never had strong enough feelings to really show that side of him. That all changes when Markus moves to town as the new Veterinarian. One chance meeting while running/walking their dogs has them meeting up each morning & getting to know each other. It’s clear that the spark is there but neither is quite sure how to go about acting on it. When Markus’s past calls & he needs Rooster to help, our boy drops everything to do just that. Will that open the door for more? Or will it cement them into the “friend zone” ? There is so much emotion in this book & some parts really hit me square in the chest. Having parents who are more concerned about what they “think” God thinks is right as well as what other people think is not a recipe for a happy family. I really loved seeing Markus get the closure he needed & be able to move forward in life. Rooster’s family helped make him who is & despite the dark parts of his past he can live his life in love knowing he has a Family & a community who are supportive & love him unconditionally. This story was beautiful & one that I hope is possible for so many. Love is love. No matter where you are or what anyone else thinks. If you have love in your life, be grateful & know how truly lucky you are. Available on Amazon & Kindle Unlimited December 19th!
I rarely choose a book based on the cover, but Hearts We Claim earned its spot on my list thanks to the promise of pets and the utterly charming dog featured. I adore animals, but Christina Berry took it to another level, leaving me wondering which couple I should focus on: the endearing Ruffus and Drusilla or their equally lovable owners, vet Markus and firefighter Adam.
This story begins with one of the cutest meet-cutes I've read, as Markus and Adam are brought together when their dogs decided to become a couple first. From jogging buddies to Adam stepping in as a heroic figure after Markus’s accident, their dynamic is wonderfully heartwarming. Markus and Adam’s relationship feels genuine and layered, balancing playful banter with moments of deep vulnerability.
The supporting cast shines just as brightly, particularly the strong, vibrant women in Adam's family. Christina Berry skillfully weaves their individual stories into the narrative, even in cameo roles, giving the small-town community a rich and authentic feel. The town itself is a heartwarming backdrop, filled with people who rally together when one of their own needs help.
The attention to detail is outstanding, whether describing the workings of a dog shelter, the routines of a veterinary clinic, or the challenges and camaraderie in a firefighter department. The emotional depth of the story peaks during Markus's heart-wrenching encounter with his father, adding layers of survival, acceptance, and reconciliation.
This book is a brilliant blend of charm, community, and love. It’s easy to recommend to anyone who enjoys small-town romances, heartfelt character arcs, and the added bonus of adorable pets.
Adam and Markus find themselves starting a new friendship with a dash of flirting when their dogs tangled them up together while while running one day. Adam is the towns only openly gay firefighter ( not that Markus knows that), and Markus is the new vet in town that has everyone’s interest piqued. Realizing their dogs were smitten with one another it only made sense for them to take their morning runs together.. for the dogs of course..and maybe for them as well.
I really enjoyed reading this book it was a wonderful mix of humor and seriousness that highlighted on some of the experiences that gay men face in small southern towns. Despite clearly liking one other they are both reluctant to make a move out of concern of the backlash they would possibly face by the townsfolk. It is a heartfelt story of finding people you can call family and a place you can call home, as well as the pure unconditional love of dogs. Adam and Markus have such a sweet dynamic and Adams patience and understanding towards Markus in his time of need is a great demostration of the kindness of his character, and thankful Markus pulled himself together enough to realize how he was in the wrong.
As much as I adored the MC’s and learning of their history. I would be lying if I said my favorite character in the book was not Adams sister. The introduction of Ava may be hands down of my favorite introduction to side characters. She was down right funny in a way that I do not think she intends, she is someone I would think would be so fun to have around as a friend.
If you are a fan on cinnamon roll characters, dogs in love, energetic firefighters, introverted veterinarians, and nosy matching making family members this is the book for you!.
While jogging with Drusilla, the puppy drags Adam right into a tangle of leashes with another pooch and his person. This person was none other than Marcus. The Tall, dark, and handsome, town’s new veterinarian. Both start bonding over their route for dog walks. It was clear there was a spark but both don’t know how to act upon it. Adam is this cheerful goofy golden retriever energy while Marcus is quite , reserved one. I love how Adam was so supporting of Marcus and didn’t leave him. He is exactly what Marcus needed. Adam is such a caretaker and i love how he took care of Marcus and make him feel protected and wanted. I love their chemistry. I love how nervous they were with each other at start. Marcus family didn’t accept when he came out. What his mom did was so horrible. I am happy he got the closure with his dad atleast. The townspeople are wonderfully kind and supportive, with both Marcus and Adam. How they immediately make Marcus part of them. Marcus got the acceptance he has never know. I am so happy for him. I cried at Adam story. They both have gone through something bad. I love that they have each other now. I love Adam’s family and how supportive they are, specially her mom. I love her.
Thank you to Christina Berry & The Author Agency for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Adam is a local firefighter & Markus has recently moved into town to reopen the Vet Clinic, these two meet when their respective furry friends tangle themselves and their dads together when out for a jog one morning and both dogs and humans alike feel an instant attraction they struggle to ignore.
This was my first book by this author and although it is book 3 in a interconnected stand alone series books 1&2 are MF and this is MM) I never once felt lost within the story and i will be going back to read the previous two books in this series as I really enjoyed Christina's writing. Both MCs have trauma in their past that is briefly mentioned, and Markus has a pretty rough time throughout this book. They say it comes in threes, right? But Adam is such a caretaker, and that aspect of his character really shines through. There were some really lovely found family moments, good humour and spice and I throughly enjoyed this read it was a great introduction to a new to me author who I'm looking forward to exploring more work from. 🌶🌶
This is the first by Berry that I’ve read and I doubt it’ll be the last. Her writing is well-paced and her characters are fun. Both Markus & Adam went through things in their childhoods because of their sexuality, but even tho it didn’t leave them unscathed they aren’t going to let it get them down. Both have become good men – sweet, caring, and giving.
They find themselves connecting pretty much right away as it seems like life keeps throwing them together. There’s a little bit of a dance as they feel each other out, deciding if they are willing to take a chance on their attraction, but they soon become friends and maybe even something more. As long as they are willing to take that chance.
While I enjoyed Markus and Adam’s story, I do really wish they’d done a bit more talking. There’s a little bit of angst, most of which could have been avoided with a few questions from one or the other of them. But even that was a minor complaint. In general, it was a really smooth and easy read with lots of feel good moments flowing into a HEA ending.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**
I read all three books in this trilogy today, and I’m very glad I read them all together! Having the characters fresh in my memory, and the stories of the side characters is very helpful.
I love having more details about Rooster, the lovable friend and coworker in the earlier books. One of her authors notes in another book was that she never intended to write more than just book one, and I never got the impression that Rooster was gay in the other books, so it was a fresh approach having this story. I am a big M/M romance fan, so I really loved how she slipped this in (haha, unintentional Freudian slip there 😆).
I was not expecting how this story went, but after she twisted the two previous books, I should have been prepared for the unexpected! I still wasn’t. This was definitely my favourite of the three books. Even with the difficulties that Rooster/Adam and Markus went through, and the resistance both held out in forming a relationship, it was such a great slow burn to get to that spice. Berry writes great spice, and can really do the MM steamy scenes well! Plus, those two dogs sure add to the story! Can’t go wrong with the cutest, and most loyal, dogs ever, in a book!
Hearts We Claim is a sweet, heartfelt, emotional story that packs a lot into its 216 pages.
As new to Krause, Texas Markus meets firefighter Adam when they are both out jogging with their dogs and quite literally end up tangled together in more ways than one.
But what starts out as two guys becoming friends, and going jogging together soon turns into more.
As they realise they have feelings for each other.
Yet, Adam who is out and accepted as a gay man has never kissed a guy or had a relationship in his small town and Markus well he's been through the ringer. As his church going parents are not accepting of his sexuality and he's still suffering now.
But together the pair find acceptance and love.
And with a really great meet-cute, a little spice and likable secondary characters. This was an enjoyable read. That doesn't shy away from tough subjects and wouldn't it be nice if more of the world could be like Krause, Texas.
My thanks to The Author Agency for the opportunity to read an early copy of Hearts We Claim. ☺️
This was so cute. And I don't know if it's cause I'm hormonal (probably) but I cried over this twice. Like full on sobbing towards the end over the community.
I don't usually gravitate towards small town stories, but I was led in with the promise of dogs, a hot fireman and a hot vet. I loved that this actually felt like a community where everyone cared about each other. Usually in the small towns I read, there's always a person or group that's just nasty for no real reason.
There are some heavier tones in the second half of the story with both Markus and Adam. And it was so nice to see the support of the town come together for both of them. Adam and Markus are both the cutest and deserve all the happiness in the world. I need a side story where they get married and Adam's family falls over themselves planning the wedding for them cause the boys are both deer in headlights and are like something quick and easy is fine and the women are like ABSOLUTELY NOT! And obvs another bonus story for Rufus and Drusilla getting married.
Small-town vibes, a sizzling firefighter (Adam) and a swoony vet (Markus), plus some adorable pups? Yes, please! This book had me laughing out loud and swooning. Adam and Markus are the couple goals, and their chemistry is off the charts.
The town is full of quirky, loveable characters (hello, gossipy grannies) and the pups, Drusilla and Rufus, were total MVPs of the story . Their awkward puppy moments were honestly some of the cutest scenes, and honestly, they were the real matchmakers.
The balance of humor and heartwarming moments? Perfect. It was sweet, wholesome, and sexy in all the right ways. Adam and Markus figuring out their relationship amidst the chaos of small-town life felt so real and endearing.
This book will make you believe in love, dog-parenting, and maybe even the power of a dazzling smile. Totally recommend if you want a feel-good, hot romance with a side of cute dogs!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is the first book I’ve read by Christina Berry and I am hooked! I love a good insta-lust/like/love trope and this author captures it so well with Adam and Markus.
Adam, or Rooster as he’s known to friends and family, is the sweetest! With a family of completely outrageous sisters and one adorably accepting mom, it’s no wonder he is such great guy. As we find out more of his backstory, another layer is added that makes him even more endearing.
Markus is also a true sweetheart but definitely has a bit more sadness to his story. While we are not fully introduced to his backstory until much later, there is enough foreshadowing throughout that just makes him such a complex person.
I absolutely adored all the animals in this book! They complimented each of their owners so well and brought a cuteness to the story that really touched me. While there are some darker themes at times, overall this is such a sweet book! Will definitely be reading more from this author!
*Tropes: -MM Romance -Small Town -Firefighter -Found Family -Dog Dads -Hurt/Comfort
*Spiciness: 2 / 5
Oh My Lord…!!! Hearts We Claim definitely claimed my heart with its story and all the characters. Markus, Adam and their respective fur babies Rufus and Druscilla are such sweethearts and I 1000% adore all of them. It was very emotional to read what Markus and Adam were subjected to in their respective pasts for their sexuality. But in the end they surround themselves with a supportive community that includes family, friends and colleagues who love them unconditionally, accepts them for who they are and are there for them no matter the circumstances. Hearts we claim is a well balanced story with emotional moments, lighthearted teasing and meddling from family members and sweet and caring scenes that will warm your heart. I absolutely recommend this book if you love reading MM romance and other above mentioned tropes.
Awe! Such a cute but steamy story. Adam and Markus are amazing characters and they will have you falling for them in chapter one. I wouldn't quite call it "love at first sight", but it's pretty dang close. Maybe replace it with another 4 letter "L" word! These two definitely are pushed through some tough challenges and forced to overcome some internal and external obstacles. Between holding on to the tried-and-true, avoiding the toxic-ness and fearing the unknown, Adam and Markus still know how to come out on top. They are put through a ringer of sorts, that you'll find yourself tearing up, blushing behind your palms, and smiling until your cheeks hurt. Their story is so well written and flows so well that it's like you're a fly on the wall, ready to fight their battles, and give them a little (or not so little) push in the right direction. Because we all deserve a happy ending.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
After reading several heavy books, this one felt like a breath of fresh air! I loved every second of it—so much so that I can’t even put into words how much I enjoyed it. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun, heartwarming romance.
First off, the dog dad aspect? Absolutely adorable. Drusilla, the awkward puppy, stealing the show and leading to the cutest meet-cute ever? Perfection. The chemistry between the main characters was off the charts—effortless, playful, and so full of tension in the best way.
And Markus? Swoon. The town’s new veterinarian, tall, dark, and handsome, with a dazzling smile? I don’t blame the matchmaking grannies one bit! Add in a sexy firefighter hero, and you have a recipe for an absolutely irresistible romance.
This book was lighthearted, charming, and exactly what I needed. If you love small-town romance, dog dads, and sizzling chemistry, Hearts We Claim is an absolute must-read!
This is a great MM romance. It has an adorable meet cute with dogs. These two and the dogs are so cute!! The romance budding between the dogs was another added bonus to this book. Markus is a veterinarian and that leads to many animals in this book. I Loved Adam's family. They are a hoot. I loved how they take Markus under their wings, but my favorite part is how Adams's mom is a mom for Markus. His family situation broke my heart, but the life that Markus finds in this small town warmed my heart. Even the fire family takes in Markus when one of their own sets their eye on Markus. A great read if you are a fan of MM romance. It's one that captures you right from the beginning and one that you are sad see end. The characters are awesome. I loved the sense of humor of this one as well. I laughed quite often while reading this book.
Adam works for the fire department was at his chief’s retirement party and also a teammate become the next chief, when done he stripped out of his blues to his swim trunks to go to a party and saw that he was watched by a person. Markus moved to town and was the new vet and everyone was dropping hints to Adam about them getting together. Adam takes out different dogs when he is running to give them exercise when running with Drusilla who got tangled up with Markus’s dog leash. They started running together and Adam took Drusilla because she liked Markus’s dog. Adam taking care of Markus after his accident, when Markus finds out that his father is dying Adam takes him to the hospital. They got together but Markus makes Adam leave because he wants more, his father tells him the truth about when he had been sent away after finding out he was gay. They work thing out.
This started out well, and I loved all the human and doggie interactions, with budding attraction an all sides. But then the plot went super ‘active’, and after one accident, one family emergency and a robbery (all for poor Markus), I was scratching my head a little. I’d call the romantic development ok, but maybe a little bit on the lukewarm side, with some slightly odd hick-ups on the way.
Things that niggled me: .) Adam’s video that went nowhere. What was the point of adding this when it’s only ignored later? .) Both men have past ‘issues’, neither really deeply explored. .) The usual small-town vibe felt a teeny sterotype (but aren’t they all?) .) Not sure why we have to go through a lot of detail of another wedding in the epilogue? I really had lost interest by then.
Still, this is an easy fun read, but unfortunately, it didn’t rock my boat.
I fell in love with the storyline and characters right from the start. We are introduced to Adam aka Rooster, the gay firefighter you love because of his personality and the way he openly talks about his life on TT and his YouTube channel. Along comes Markus, the town's new vet and a sexy one at that. Add to the mix their dogs, Rufus and Drucillia who seem to be boyfriend and girlfriend as soon as they meet, and you have a terrific and enjoyable MM romance that will have you smiling from ear to ear. One night, everything changes and the road becomes a little bumpy but can they smooth things out? I highly recommend grabbing this one and enjoying Adam and Markus's sweet and entertaining love story.
Adam and Markus have not always had easy lives. Both have dealt with heartbreaking homophobia from some family. Markus has just moved to town and the guys find themselves literally tangled up in their dogs' leashes out on their runs one day. Small town shenanigans and an adorable meet cute for sure!
While this is a love story between our MMCs. There are so many moments of discovery, forgiveness, and power. The author has done a superb job creating these beautifully broken men and their tale of finding themselves and each other.
If you enjoy a diverse, spicy, romance with a powerful message, fun friendships, and loads of sweet puppers, get this book!
A emotional rollercoaster that had light and fluffy
I felt that communication was struggling and I also feel like sometimes there was a disconnect because of the lack of communication I feel like there was also a lot of assumptions that were made between Adam and Marcus which caused them to take longer to get together I feel like their past really did define them and it made them struggle even more but I feel like they both overcame and worked through those issues I loved the dominance that Markcus would take a times but I also feel like Adam was amazing with the way that he was with Markcus and he was so compassionate so that really made it better for me overall it was really good book.
Hearts We Claim Hearts of Texas Series By Christina Berry
Oh, my goodness, I loved this book so much. As always with Christina's books, I giggled and laughed a lot, but I shed a few tears, too. This is such a sweet, sweet story of falling in love.
The book brings two people together who are smitten at first sight. Then Berry relates a story that everybody who has ever fallen in love can understand. She captures all of the giddiness, hesitation, joy, fear, and humanness that happens when you first know you are in love but don't want to risk being hurt. It's really a brilliantly written story of love for all kinds of people.
Whether you are male or female, gay or straight, or anything else, I think you won't want to miss this book. Seriously, I loved it.
