Fielder's Choice (Pamela Aares Tavonesi Series, Book #3)
When love’s the game, you can’t play it safe…
All-Star shortstop Matt Darrington has more than a problem. His wife died, and now he’s juggling a too-smart-for-her-britches six-year-old and the grueling pace of professional baseball. Worse, his daughter is mom shopping. When they explore a local ranch, she decides the beautiful, free-spirited tour guide is premium mom material. Matt thinks the sexy guide looks like Grade-A trouble.
Alana Tavonesi loves her cosmopolitan life in Paris. But when she inherits the renowned Tavonesi Olive Ranch, she has to return to California and face obligations she never wanted. Selling the place is her first instinct, but life at the ranch begins to crack her open, exposing the dreams hidden inside her heart.
On a lark she leads a ranch tour, where she meets Matt Darrington. His physical power and a captivating sensual appeal fire her in a way no man ever has, but he has a kid—and being a stepmom is a responsibility Alana will never be ready for. Still . . . she can’t keep her mind or her hands off him.
When Matt’s daughter goes missing from a kid’s camp at the ranch, Alana organizes the search effort, knowing from experience the areas a bright child would be drawn to explore. As she and Matt work together to search for the little girl, Alana discovers that father and daughter have won her heart. Yet it may be too late for love…

Looking for the perfect baseball themed beach read? Fielder's Choice is my pick! It's a touching story about a professional baseball player who lost his wife and is trying to juggle being a single dad. When his six-year-old decides it's time to shop for a new mom and chooses Alana Tavonesi, he knows he's in trouble. Sparks fly and before either of them realizes it, they're falling for each other. But when the daughter disappears, they'll have to work together to find her in time.
I really liked this book. It's perfect while lounging by the pool or on the beach. While predictable at times, this is still a solid read.
This is the typical romance involving one of the protagonists with a child from another relationship. As is typical, the one without the child gets attracted to the child first and then the adult. The characters in this story were totally one dimensional and bland. They spent most of the book in an inner dialogue about how they wouldn't be a good fit with each other while all other aspects of their life fell magically into place. Then they decided they love each other anyway. Forgettable and boring.
Alona Tavonesi, lives the free,fast-paced life of Paris until her grandmother passes away and leaves her the olive farm and its ranch.Matt Darrington,a major league baseball player and single dad to a 6 year old whosemother passed away with her parents on a trip to watch one of matt's games.Matt meets Alana at the ranch during one of their tours and assumes alana is a ranch hand just because she gives a tour when one of her workers fell sick and they are both attracted to each other.Alana, scared of commitment after her parents divorce, tries to distance herself from matt despite the success of both her parents second marriage and matt fears getting married due to what happened between him and his ex wife.Romance between the two blossoms amidst all complications, trials and lessons that help them grow and let go from the past.a captivating story of romance, and the journey to get to to where they want to be
This is a thoroughly enjoyable read! The author writes about wonderfully complex characters and puts them in a setting so well-rendered that readers can almost feel the ranch dust swirling off the page.
Welp, I’m not entirely sure what to say about this one. This book is the third installation of the Travonesi series and I must say, while I admit to enjoying myself, I am getting a tad tired; it’s the same plot over and over again. The difference between this one and the previous two is that I feel as though the main characters had some actual faults, and while said faults could annoy me greatly, I just liked the fact that they were there, the fact that these characters weren’t perfect.
Overall, this was an enjoyable book, extremely annoying at times, but still a nice and easy read.
Note: I received a complimentary from the author. It does not colour my views in any way.
It was a strong, solid read…until I read what happened in the last chapter. Eep. Jumping the gun, much?
There isn't a lot of dialogue, but the prose is quite engaging. I love the passionate language; it reflects the raw, searing attraction between Alana and Matt and expresses in more than words just how much they got under each other's skin. These two characters are at different stages of their lives, and I dig the way their nature (well, more like Alana's) is a big conflict. Matt could use some air—a little breather, a little release—while Alana could use some earth—ground under her feet, stability.
While Alana tries not to make apologies for her free spirit, she recognises the consequences of her actions and isn't completely flippant about them. I don't believe she's ignorant or irresponsible; it's just that she hasn't had the chance to be actually responsible for something before, and now she has a ranch with dozens of employees and their families to answer to. In addition, Matt's six-year-old daughter Sophie has taken a liking to her, making her every move monumentally consequential with respect to the kid's affections. Everything is understandably off-kilter for such a young woman, still struggling to find her place where she seemingly doesn't belong, suddenly burdened with responsibilities—ones that affect lives—she never asked for. But just as she makes mistakes, she learns from them and accepts her shortcomings. Honestly, I don't appreciate how she's unfairly judged by some people for living her darn life. It's her development as a character that makes this such a great read for me.
I do like Matt and acknowledge the hardships of his being a single father, and I am overwhelmed by how his connection with Alana is so intense, so palpable. Matt takes a leap and makes a choice, one that is not risk-free but with possibilities of a bright, happy future. The right woman is worth all the hard calls, after all. I like that he balances his decisions with both his daughter and himself in mind, that he doesn't deprive himself but also doesn't neglect Sophie and her best interests.
All of the Heart of the Game series ends with an engagement, but I can't say I'm comfortable with that here. It's, I don't know, too easy, too quick. In a lot of ways, Alana is still growing, and I just don't think she's ready to be tied down. That proposal feels too much like a curveball thrown her way, but what the heck. Who am I get in the way of a couple's HEA? :p
This is a smartly written story with lots of heart and heat, a good amount of detailed and informed baseball plays, and a well-executed plot line. That parallel between the prickly neighbour's relationship with his estranged sister and Alana's own relationship with her family is particularly clever. I like Aares' kind of sports romance. Her heroines are smart and self-assured, if with a few insecurities and not-conductive-to-relationship flaws. Her heroes are not all-important baseball players who make the plot, but are simple people who just happen to be baseball players and have their stories to share—really outstanding stories when in the hands of Aares.
Alana has always been the jet-setting party girl. She finished college, packed her bags and began her dream life of fun and fashion in Europe. Freedom was her mantra.
Matt loves his pro career in baseball, but the one thing he loves more is his gorgeous daughter Sophie. Juggling his sporting career and being a single dad, Matt has resigned himself to the fact that this is his life.
Alana thought her life was perfect just the way it was, until her grandmother bequeathed her the family Ranch. What did she know about running a ranch? How was she going to run it from Paris? Apparently Nana saw something that Alana was blind to.
Taking his daughter to the ranch for a day out, Alana literally falls into Matt's life...when she stumbles off a ladder. At that moment both their lives change...and with the help of a six year old match maker, their lives are about to get interesting.
Can Alana change her wild ways and take on the Ranch? Is ready to settle down? Is she ready to commit...to anything?
Matt figures brief and simple. Friends with benefits, no strings sex is all he needs. No complications or confusion for Sophie. But really who is protecting?
When Sophie wanders off and goes missing from the Ranch, both Alana and Matt's perspectives change. Life is precious...and Love is what matters.
Ms Aares does it again with a beautiful love story filled with wonderful characters and a story line that will win your heart. Love, Lust and Baseball...what more could you ask for?
I loved it! From the amazing complex characters to the setting and the adorable kid all through the secondary characters, Pamela Aares didn't pull any punches when it came to this story.
I loved the connection between Alana and Matt and their interactions. But more than that, I love the growth these two characters accomplished throughout the story. It was a treat to see Alana be more responsible while still maintaining her carefree side. But mostly is was watching Matt allowing himself the chance to love again that truly got to me.
It helped that they had great chemistry too! I loved that this story was well-balanced when it came to sweet and the sensual. This time around I didn't feel that any particular element took away from the romance. Actually, I think everything came together seamlessly--from the romance to the conflict and the amazing cast of characters.
And since I'm taking about characters, I have to mention that this time around we get to visit the previous couples, which I enjoyed. It was nice to see how they were holding up. I appreciated the fact that their presence added to the story as a whole.
All in all, a great addition to the series and my favorite book in the series.
*I received a copy of this title in exchange of my honest opinion.
Wow, these storms just keep getting better and better as they go. Each story gets a little more complicated and I get more involved. Matt and Alana are just great together. Their story is a little more complicated with Sophie, who is the cutest thing.
I love he continued character development of the other couples. I can't wait to see what's in store with the next story.......
It took way too long for Alana to accept Matt and Sophie, Matt's daughter to be part of her blended family. I do not like to read about people's feelings and is used to verbal miscommunication between lovers.
** Book received from author in exchange for an honest review ** Chapter 3 - I went in to this book skeptical. After 2 books and 2 new book boyfriends I was convinced that another amazing bloke could be created, especially after Scotty! I love him. After 3 chapters, I'm already getting feelings for Matt. I can't wait to see how this goes. Chapter 7 - This isn't going the way I hoped it would! I want to bang their heads together! Finished - Still wanted to bang their heads together towards the end but I am sooo glad that they got their problems sorted. Matt Darrington is a closed off ball player who's only human love in life is his adorable and funny 6 year old, Sophie. There was literally one part where I had to stop so I could laugh! He's got no social skills and had been married to the wrong woman for him in the past - Sophie's Mom, who is no longer here (In fictional world.) Alana is a flighty, party girl who enjoyed her freedom and indipencance until the passing of her Grandmother meant she inherited her grandmothers baby. The Ranch. Although it's something that she thinks she can't run, she manages to pull out the stops when needed in the memory of here Nana and it is also the place where she meets Matt.
I was skeptical at the start of the story because I had no connection to Alana like I had Scotty in book 2. At no point did I finish book 2 and think I'd love to read Alana's story not like I thought when I read Alex's and instantly loved Scotty. So, I'm surprised with myself over the fact that I now adore Alana. She's got many layers, layers she didn't know she had and managed to shock everyone with her capabilities. In normal life, that's one thing I love doing, and so I love Alana for that. Another great read!! Roll on book 4.
The third book in this series, I think that this is my favorite book so far. A lot of it had to do with Sophie. Alana is Alex's cousin who loves the partylife and globetrotting. When her Nana dies and leaves Alana the olive ranch and business, she feels like she is in way over her head and doesn't belong there. While agreeing to do a tour of the ranch, she meets baseball player Matt. Right away there is a strong physical attraction between them. Alana starts to dream about how good things can be between them. When she finds out he has a six year old daughter, she decides that there can't be anything between them because she just doesn't want to do anything with kids. Matt's daughter Sophie has plans for her dad and Alana. Matt decides that Alana is too flighty and doesn't want anything to do with her. Fate has other plans for them because everytime they are near each other, the chemistry just gets stronger. Each time they get together, they come up with reasons why they can't be together. It isn't until Sophie turns up missing from a camp at the ranch that Alana realizes what the little girl means to her but knows that there will never be anything between them. After Matt sees the painting Alana did of Sophie, he realizes how strong his feelings are for her and goes after her to see if she feels the same way. I liked the way the book ended but I wish they could get another book because I would like to see how Alana fares beinng a stepmom.
Generally speaking, I did enjoy this book. I find Aares' writing to be excellent and her characters engaging.
My reason for not liking this book as much as the others I've read rests solely on the fact that Alana doesn't want to have children and the whole message of this book is that women who don't want to have children don't really know what they want--all they need to do is find a kid who's cute and smart and they'll change their minds and embrace parenthood wholeheartedly. That opinion, which is woefully prevalent in romance novels, is offensive and trivializes all the valid reasons a woman may have for not wanting to be a mother, that a woman isn't capable of knowing what she wants from life.
If this doesn't bother you, then you'll probably enjoy this book because there is a lot to like about it. If this does bother you, you may want to give this book a pass--or at least be prepared for what you'll get.
Another must read from Pamela Aares. She not only writes of the love between H and h, but once again presents a storyline that includes protecting our natural environment. Families tie the story together, but also threaten to destroy their growing love because of their childhoods. I loved seeing Alana realize she is the woman her grandmother always knew she was and Matt finally understanding that he still has a lot to learn about being a father and a Dad. Sensual without being too graphic.
Matt Darrington is a professional baseball player who is struggling to raise his six-year old daughter Sophie after his wife dies. Alana Tavonesi inherits the Tavonesi Olive Ranch in California and returns to the ranch after leaving her partying life in Paris. While Alana is giving a tour of the ranch she meets Matt and Sophie who sees Alana as a mother-figure to her. Sophie goes missing at a kid’s camp and Alana joins Matt to help search for Sophie. I really enjoyed this delightful contemporary romance novel.
A good book and kept things going. BUT I think the author was trying to do too much. The sex scenes were pretty steamy, the relationship between the hero/heroin ebook but the author spent a great deal of time with the heroine's insecurities and her flying off to Europe and another guy.
There was a good balance of the heroes insecurities and another relationship.
This was a cute and quick read...I like romances that involve sports, and this one had a good balance of both. The author's descriptions of the olive farm were beautiful and made it believable that the main character would trade her jet-setting life for a new one. It was a bit of a stretch sometimes to think that a major league baseball player would seem to have so much time available, and the main character's flightiness early in the book was almost annoying, but it all came together.
This story was so good that I just couldnt out it down. This story is so addictive that you just have to keep reading. The plot is great and the characters are likable. The chemistry is hot and it was interesting to discover these two people come to terms with their weaknesses and embrace their strengths. The background of the olive ranch was a wonderful setting and Sophie was a wonderful surprise. Well worth reading.
This was a really cute love story. I 'm not usually into the single parent stories but this one was endearing. The characters were very well developed and the scenes so easy to picture. I just plain liked it, really liked it! Definitely a stand alone story but I wish I had read books one and two. I always enjoy continuing stories with the return of previous characters.
Fielder’s Choice has been at the top (appearing alphabetically) of my e-books for months. It had peaked my curiosity, but then dipped after I downloaded it. I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would. The stories of Alana and Matt are nicely woven. Sophie is an adorable third. I would have been happy for the book to be longer with more fleshed out about all of them and others. I am hoping there’s a story for Zav in the future.
I rather liked this book. I’ll add this one to my read-again book shelf. The characters are pleasant, the conflict understandable within the scope of the character history and plot.
More sexual than I expected reading the blurb. I think sometimes lust is mistaken for love in these books. Both characters have a nice arc and the kid is cool. I just wish they saw each other as unique people more than someone to have fun in bed with. The characters are deeper but never show much of it to each other since they're too busy with other things.
I really liked this story and the characters. The setting was interesting and well written so you could easily picture everything. I read this one out of order and need to go back and grab book 2. It's ok. Unlike the trend these days, the stories within the series can stand alone. For that, I thank the author.
Alana interrupts her shuttling between California and Paris to manage the olive ranch she inherited from her grandmother. She meets Matt Darrlington, shortstop for the Giants, when his daughter Sophie signs up for summer camps at the ranch.
Alana is attracted to Matt, but is sure she is unsuited to mother his Sophie.
Matt, is a professional baseball star who isn't interested in marriage. He falls for a wealthy young jet-setter with no desire to settle down any time soon. After a torrid affair both parties are struggling with broken hearts. An exciting story as they each deal with their own insecurities and come to gripes with what comes next.
She's inherited a farm but she's a social butterfly. She meets widower with a 6 year old daughter. The daughter decides that Alana will be her new mother, but the story takes a gpfew twists.
A widowed baseball player with a young daughter, a socialite who's been left a ranch in California by her Grandmother and a wind mill with a golden lizard on top all combine to make a terrific story. I loved this book.
Ms. Shares is a beautiful writer. She had my interest from the first paragraph. Love baseball, love love. The instant connection was almost to hot to handle!
