Creepy, macabre, haunting, and addictive describe this fast-paced thriller. Polly George is a complicated puzzle her therapist, Jessie is trying to solve. Serial killers, stalkers, and disturbing diary entries propel this all-consuming psychological thriller. There were twists and turns throughout leading to the shocking conclusion. I look forward to reading more creations from Abby Davies. Thank you, BookSirens for my copy. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Phew!!! This book was a rollercoaster of a ride, and everything I could want in a psychological thriller. I was gripped from the beginning, until the explosive end.

Dr Jessie England, is a an experienced psychologist, and takes on a troubled 15 year old girl called Polly, following a suicide attempt. Almost instantly, trouble starts to happen in Jessie’s life…she’s being stalked by a dark hooded figure, has had graffiti sprayed onto the outside of her house, and someone has broken into, and trashed her home. Throughout the book, I was kept on my toes, guessing it was one person one minute, but then completely changing my mind in the next.

This is a highly recommended read, and I will definitely be reading more from this author.

I know I was holding my breath throughout most of this book, and didn’t release it until the end! Even though I know there’s no such thing as monsters, Abby Davies writes about real (human) and imagined monsters in a way that has your heart in your throat.

Jessie is a psychologist who thinks she has figured out teenager, Polly. She believes her acting out has been caused by the trauma she experienced in childhood. Polly’s mother knows otherwise, but she’s not telling, and hoping that Jessie can suss it out on her own.

In the meantime, Jessie is dealing with threats at her home. It’s so upsetting, she can’t even deal with Mark, a man she naively dated, but whose over-the-top behavior gives her the willies!

The narration is split between Jessie, Polly, excerpts from Polly’s mom’s diary and Ben, the twin Polly lost when she was 5. I stayed up way past my bedtime because I had to know what happened (and release that breath!).

Thanks to Book Sirens for an advance reader’s copy.

Jessie has a new patient, Polly. She's trying to help her after her cry for help in trying to take her own life.

Somebody then starts following Jessie and scaring her to the point she no longer feels safe in her own home.

Then 3 bodies are discovered. There's a serial killer on the loose and Jessie is not safe.

This is a well written story and had me feeling a bit on edge a few times. The thought of someone being in our house when we're not in always creeps me out, so I felt scared for Jessie when her house was almost ruined. I had a few suspicions with a couple of things, which I was right about, but this didn't ruin the story as I hadn't worked out why. The last 25% was so fast paced and I flew through it. So many moments of wondering if Jessie was going to be ok.

Wow. What an incredibly dark and twisted psychological thriller, that gave me the creeps.

Our main character Polly, was totally unnerving. You didn’t get to experience her POV until about halfway through the book, which I felt gave it that extra chilling edge. However, I wasn’t too sure if I was overly fond of Jessie. She just felt a bit ‘woe is me’, and I was often confused by the choices she made (*cough* Mark *cough*).

I also really enjoyed the twists in this book. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, I ended up getting completely shocked! This book gave me goosebumps throughout, and I was consistently terrified. Abby crafted a really clever storyline, with characters that just got under your skin.

Thank you again to Abby and the publisher, for sending me over an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I love thrillers and stories written with a few good twists, but I felt this particular thriller had just a little bit too much going on. It was fairly easy to figure out what Polly's angle was in "picking" Jessie as her therapist and to assume what she had done in the past, but her mother's diary entries were a bit more confusing. After finishing the book I had to go back and reread a couple of the diary chapters to see what I missed and make the connection. Also, I did not like how Mark's character was portrayed at all. He didn't come across as realistic to me and I felt he was written that way just to throw one more suspicious character into the mix.

Overall I did enjoy this book and would rate it 3.5*

First off, I love this cover. It's so eye-catching, and that and the blurb really made me want to start reading this as soon as I could.

Polly recently intentionally hurt herself, and she's now a new patient of Dr. Jessie England's, a therapist who has her own baggage, both personal and professional, that shapes how she handles Polly both during and between their sessions together. There are various flashbacks, diary entries, and so on that give you more insight into other characters and aspects of the story than just Jessie's, and while it can be a lot to keep up with, the formatting is different when it's not Jessie's POV, so it's a bit easier to tell it all apart at first glance, and I felt like it all really worked together nicely to tell a proper tale.

I did figure out quite a few things well before they were revealed, which is not necessarily a great thing IMO, as it makes me feel like the characters should also have figured it out by that point and diminishes the "shock value" when it finally does get revealed on the page, but at least with this one, it didn't really take me out of the story all that much, and I was intrigued enough to still keep going and make sure I was right. (Granted, I know I'm reading a mystery thriller, so of course some craziness is going to happen, whereas the characters don't *know* they're in a mystery thriller and are therefore allowed some leeway when it comes to "figuring it all out." However, some others I've read, the "twist" was telegraphed so early on and so openly that it just wasn't even fun to keep reading afterward.)

This is the second book I've read by this author, and I like her style and plotlines well enough that I'm going to keep looking into her every now and then to see what she comes up with next.

3.75 stars, rounded up to 4

Potentially one of Davies’ best yet?!👀

Pretty Polly is a psychological thriller that kept me on my toes from the get go😍

With short chapters and a gripping plot, Abby had me hooked once again. With her books becoming darker each time, her writing speaks for itself 👏

At times reading this book, I felt sick, squeamish & creeped out to my core. Davies is able to describe things in ways that hazard goosebumps, yet have the reader glued to the pages.

Being an auto-read author, I will forever aim to pick up her latest read. I guessed one of the many twists this book delivered, however it did not ruin the enjoyment of the book whatsoever.

Pretty Polly releases in paperback TODAY & the ebook on 01/02. It is a deliciously crafted read, with characters that are rotten to the core.

Thank you to Abby as always for having me as part of her arc team, it is an absolutely pleasure to read her books in advance🤩

I rated this book a 4.5🌟s.

This is my second book by this author (first was The Girl Who Heard Maggots) and Abby Davies does not disappoint.

This was such a gripping, twisted book full of so many secrets, so many turns that I just didn’t see coming. Some I did, but most, I didn’t at all.

I was astounded at the psychological aspect of this book, and how insanely powerful one of the characters was at getting inside people’s heads.

When people describe a book as “unputdownable” I feel like this is one of those books, 100%. At least for me, it was. I didn’t want to stop reading. I had to know where this story was leading, who the “bad guy” was, what the secrets were, and what happened. It left me on the edge of my seat, my mouth gaping, and just in utter shock.

If you’re looking for a thriller book about a serial killer out for revenge, a story filled with secrets, and a story that will leave you breathless in the best way, I cannot recommend this one enough.

Thank you to #booksirens & Abby Davies for allowing me to read this ARC! I can’t wait to read more! 👏🏻👏🏻

Pretty Polly is a clever, twisted thriller from Abby Davies. I read this fairy fast over 2 sittings. The plot kept me going, needing to know the secrets the book holds. As believe me, there's a lot of secrets in this tale.

I enjoyed the depth of the characters although did have a few issues with Jessie our main character. Some of her actions felt a little 'out there' especially with her job. I also felt she took things too much on face value and rarely trusted her instincts. Something again that I felt with her profession she would have been more cautious about. I won't say more because of spoilers etc!! Other characters felt fairly well flushed out, I could see them, hear them. Abby (Author) really put me in the story with them. Polly really was amazing. I can't say more, but she's probably one of my favourite characters for a while.

Pretty Polly is fast paced and a good thriller that will appeal to many! A solid 3.5 stars.

This one had me guessing from the start and dealt with some really dark topics - attempted suicide, child disappearance, adultery, obsessive relationships and much more!

I did guess a couple of the twists (I always do this - I can’t help myself) but some were so shocking I couldn’t have guessed them!

Polly was a truly complex character and one I really didn’t like much. On the outside she was innocent and weak but in reality she was deceptive, manipulative and a bit of a bitch!

Jessie was great - quite easily led and walked over by others - she held her own in the end!

A great read from Abby - keep it up!

For me, this is Abby’s best one yet! It’s a creepy, fast-paced read that follows Jessie, a psychologist, as she tries to help a troubled teenage girl - Polly. Tension and suspense is built throughout as it flicks between the past and present (the excerpts from the past really did have me at the edge of my seat!!). I love the use of multiple POVs as I felt this really helped to deepen the character development. I cannot wait to see what Abby produces next!

Oh what a book. Abby is so clever and her books grip tight ahold and do not let go.

I had some suspicions about 85% but it didn't go exactly how I thought and I loved that. The twists in the story are brilliant. There are some pretty brutal scenes in this book which just add to the way it captures you.

Another amazing book by Abby Davies.

I think this is my new favourite book by this author (was "Arrietty").
Had to give myself a day after finishing before writing review.
This was a fast-paced psychological thriller, that ratcheted up the tension equally quickly. The mystery secret that Jessie was hiding, the mystery around her new patient, Polly, their current mental state and the mysterious disappearance of her twin, Benjamin, when they were aged five, gave a multi-faceted mysyery to unravel.
The multiple view points between main character Jessie, and Polly's mum and brother Benjamin drip fed the plot and gave clues as to what could be happening. I would often stop and think, "I wonder if that means....". From the clues I'd spotted I was pleased I was on the right track with one part of the mystery but the full story was a great reveal in the dramatic conclusion.
I read about 70% over one day (whilst travelling home for Xmas, so at airport, on plane & coach), would have probably finished it in one day if I'd started it on the train. I had been so gripped, even getting a chapter or two read in the queue for security 😂.
Highly recommended reading and looking forward to reading future books.

It took me a minute to get into this book, but once I did, it was really good! Lots of twists and turns, plenty of suspicious characters, and an interesting use of shifting points of view. I wasn’t a huge fan of the flashbacks from Ben’s perspective… they seemed to drag out and didn’t feel like they served much purpose until the very end. A few of the twists I had at least an inkling were coming, but just as many were surprises. Throughout the book, I found myself wondering what this event or that character had to do with the greater storyline, but the author pulled everything together in the end, which was very satisfying. The climax was exciting, if a bit cliche in the execution (bad guy monologue). The book could use another editing pass, as I found a good number of errors, but overall an exciting and enjoyable read! I would definitely read another book by this author.

This is my second read from Abby. I always respect a writer (especially these days) that isn't afraid to dive into the taboo and macabre - Abby is one of those writers.

I really enjoyed her book 'The Cult' and knew I'd be reading another story of hers at some point in the future. I noticed a few weeks back that 'Pretty Polly' had just been released, and the premise sounded intriguing, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Unfortunately, there was something about this one that was lacking, for me. It definitely dragged a bit in places.

I guess I just wasn't overly invested in Jessie; I was more interested in Polly, as she's the real spectacle of the story. Although, I will say, I do like when a protagonist has flaws and isn't 'perfect', so I'm glad that was a part of Jessie's arc - gave her some layers.

Wasn't that keen on the structure of this one, either. Every now and then the story would break away into a diary entry from Polly's mother, or a piece of Benjamin's POV from the night he went missing. I felt the diary entries from Polly's mother weren't really necessary, and Benjamin's POV might have worked better as a prologue, maybe? Just so the flow of the story didn't keep getting interrupted.

Having said that, it was still an okay read. Definitely kept me turning pages, which is something Abby is good at. When reading 'The Cult' I was so engrossed in the story I couldn't stop flicking pages.

It's not a bad little mystery-thriller, but I just feel it played it pretty safe and generic. Nothing really happens in this story that you haven't already seen or read many times before.

Still, Abby is undoubtedly a talented writer. She's definitely made a fan out of me considering I decided to go back for seconds. But this book was lacking what I really enjoyed about Abby's writing in 'The Cult': that certain care-free candour in her prose that stifles itself for no one. To me, that's her greatest and most invaluable strength as a writer, and is an asset that, in today's world, seems to be fading its way into obscurity.

Thanks to BookSirens, the publisher, and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I'll start with the good. Of the 3 twists, one definitely caught me by surprise. I read a lot of books like this and find it hard to be truly surprised, but I was by this one. It's definitely faster paced, so I managed through it relatively quickly.

However, this book was chaotic, and not always in a good way. I love multiple POVs or flashbacks/forwards in suspense novels, but it felt like there were too many going on here. Jessie may be the most annoying (and slightly dumb) therapist I've read in a book--maybe she's supposed to be--but I was just annoyed by her and her wallowing most of the time. There were a few storylines and details that seemed a little pointless but also didn't act as true red herrings if that was the goal.

Not my favorite thriller/suspense novel I've read, but also not the worst.

Pretty Polly is a psychological thriller that will keep the readers glued to the pages. The story involves the psychologist, Jessie, who treats a teenage girl called Polly who has wounded herself and screams for her help. Jessie sets out to uncover the cause of Polly’s many problems, but she is met with brutal personal remarks that make her feel threatened in her own home.

The tension is heightened when three bodies are found and the killer is running loose. The tension continues to grow because it becomes evident that someone deliberately intends to target Jessie, though the identity of this someone remains eerily vague.

Davies delivers a chilling story of monsters that may hide even behind the most harmless-looking masks. The plot is constructed skillfully and will capture the attention of the readers from the first page. This is intensified by the vivid characters and an evocative, unsettling mood.

With the increase in the attacks on Jessie, no one is secure, and the psychologist is in haste to reveal the identity of the killer before they become a victim. This psychological thriller will send chills down your spine, and if you are a fan of the genre, you should definitely read it. Pretty Polly offers unexpected turns and twists until the last page, making the reader gasp for air. So that you know, I read Davies’s book Arrietty and found it amazing! In my opinion, she is an excellent writer.

Thank you to the author, and Booksirens for allowing me to read and review this book.

Pretty Polly is a mystery that is incredibly intriguing novel. It is told from the point of view of Jessie, Heather, and Benjamin.

Polly is a teenage girl whose brother went missing as a child, her father left, and she has many secrets that trouble her. Polly’s extreme behaviors lead her to need a psychiatrist.

Jessie is Polly’s psychiatrist, and a single mother of two college age boys. Jessie immediately gets engrossed in Polly’s story and feels an intense need to help this young girl. Jessie’s own secret eats away at her while she goes on this mission to help Polly.

Heather is Polly’s mother, and is deeply torn apart by her daughter’s actions, her son’s disappearance, and her husband’s departure. She writes in her journal about all of these secrets as she goes a little mad trying to help herself and her daughter Polly.

Benjamin’s point of view is from the past. As a young boy who believes he’s on an adventure to see a secret. A secret he may not get to see.

The plot is intricate and keeps you guessing until the very end. The characters are lovable in their own strange ways. If you are easily triggered you should check for trigger warnings before diving into this book as there are definitely some triggering things. Abby Davies has a way of pulling you into a story and blowing your mind. Absolutely loved this book.

Abby Davies nails it again with another mind-blowing psychological masterpiece. This is the second book I've read of hers, and she's quickly climbing the ranks as one of my top thriller authors. The book had me hooked right from the start, with each chapter leaving me on the edge, dying to flip to the next page.

I really like how the story unfolds from different perspectives—Jessie, Heather, and Benjamin each bringing their own flavor to the plot. Jessie's dealing with Polly's issues while navigating her own messed-up personal life adds this intense layer. And, surprise, Jessie's got secrets of her own, adding even more mystery to the mix.

Polly, now she's a real mystery box, making Jessie's job as a therapist no walk in the park. I did raise an eyebrow at how deep Jessie got into it; I mean, it felt a bit over-the-top and not super realistic. Also, not a huge fan of Mark, this side character who left me wondering why Jessie didn't see the warning signs earlier. But hey, it did throw a curveball at us readers.

I slapped a 4-star rating on this one, even though the twist didn't exactly blow my mind. I was hoping for a jaw-dropper. Still, the writing is top-notch, painting vivid scenes that play like a movie in your head. Despite the not-so-surprising twist, it's a solid read that lets you really picture every scene.

This one was difficult to read as for the first part of the book I had no idea what actually was doing on, the second half it all started to come together and make sense. Polly was a very troubled child who needed a therapist to help her get to the root of the reason she attempted to kill herself. Jess is the therapist working with her yet doesn’t seem to be able to get a handle on her. Polly is a rather smart child who controls the sessions and what she says quite well. She seems to be more in control of the session than does Jess.
Polly’s mom is too wrapped in herself and not nearly as intelligent as her daughter to figure out what to do. She is unhappy as her husband cheated on her and has kicked him out and he has disappeared as best she knows.
The little brother was missing and the chapters with him were a bit confusing and drawn out for the story. He and Polly did not get along as Polly was the leader at a very young age. The last few chapters pulled it all together and tied up the mother and brother chapters fairly well. Overall a decent book just a little slower paced in the first half versus the latter half. Stick with it the book gets it moving quite well toward the end.

I have mixed feelings about this novel. On the one hand, it delivered a great amount of suspense throughout, and the ending was a bit intense. The storyline was also compelling and has a solid foundation for mystery novel. On the other hand, I didn’t connect with Jessie. Although I appreciated her inner dialogue because it helped me gauge her emotions and turmoil, it was, at times, a bit repetitive and self-wallowing. There is never any talk about what she did to try to work through her past mistakes or pain, despite her, herself, being a therapist. I also really disliked Mark as a character and struggled to rationalize his need to be in the story. He was a bit over-the-top. And as much as I liked the suspense and intensity of the story, I was able to figure out where the story was heading, and the ending wasn’t a surprise. It also was a bit of a slow burn to get there. Polly, however, did make a pretty decent villain and sounded very much her age, which made her believable.

Overall, I really wanted to love this book, as I did Abby’s book, “The Girl Who Heard Maggots”, but this one just didn’t hit the mark for me. It was an ok thriller.

Polly attempts suicide after her brother goes missing and her parents divorce. Polly’s mum is afraid her dad's cheating ways and the loss of her brother, Benjamin, have taken a psychological toll on her. Heather, Polly’s mum takes her to see Dr. Jessie England for therapy. Polly personally chose Dr. England to treat her depression. As Jessie dives deeper into Polly’s life she believes she knows who has triggered Polly's suicide attempt. Jessie will soon find out how wrong she is.
The plot is easy to figure out. I had my suspicions by about 40% into reading this ebook. By 60%, I was almost positive I knew who was stalking Dr. England and killed Polly’s brother, Benjamin. There wasn’t enough characters to make it difficult. Unfortunately, this was lacking in twists, thrills, and real suspense. Also, I kept loosing interest and had to take several breaks to finish. I’m surprised, because it was highly rated.

Abby Davies, Pretty Polly (Apple Loft Press,2024) 253 p
Abby Davies (How to Milk a DinoCow!) Writes Pretty Polly as her first psychological suspense thriller. A highly unique book that made me interested to read. I will tell you reasons why you will love this book. This is the first psychological suspense thriller where the main character was rarely given the opportunity to speak. It was only until half of the story that I was able to see a glimpse of how Polly thinks. Another interesting factor about this soon to be published novel is that the missing twin of Polly is a guy. Other books that I have read focuses on the fact that the twins are of the same gender. Lastly, a certain detail about how Polly was found after Benjamin was missing is beyond normal. Only one finger of Polly was covered in blood. Certainly, the individual is a master in disguising crimes. It is too good to be missed.

It is amazing how the past plays such a pivotal role in the present.

When Jessie meets Polly, she is intrigued. Polly is a young patient and Jessie puts a lot of pressure on herself to “cure” Polly of the issues she struggles with. But what are those issues, exactly? As Jessie gets to know Polly, her own personal life begins to fall apart. Weird things happen at her home and she goes out on a date with a man who is very strange. By the time everything comes together, it is too late.

I really had trouble getting into this book and even found myself falling asleep several times. Jessie barely meets with Polly, so that storyline - while interesting - didn’t sustain my interest. Fortunately, the end is exciting; this is actually why I gave the book three stars, rather than two.

This wasn’t the intriguing thriller I had been hoping to read, but it was okay.

Another excellent psychological thriller from Abby Davies, she certainly knows how to grab our attention and not let go! From the first chapter I knew I was in for a treat.

Pretty Polly is a gripping book from the very beginning and does not ease off the throttle throughout.

I absolutely adore books that reel me in and make me want to forget about the “real world” whilst reading, where I am in my own little bubble and Pretty Polly certainly delivered.

The characters are brilliantly portrayed, and I love how Abby Davies gets into their psyche, it certainly adds such a really great element when reading. The tale Abby weaves is brilliant, and many parts just seem to jump out and surprise you, grab you and don’t let go with this cleverly constructed plot. There are certainly enough twists to keep you guessing in this dark thriller.

Highly, highly recommend, a must read for fans of dark, twisty, psychological thrillers.
Happy reading.

“And she released the breath she didn’t realize she was holding.” I know that’s a joke that used to be pointed out all the time in my psychological thriller groups when authors put that phrase in their books, but real talk that was me during this book.

50% of this book was “setting the scene” where literally everyone has a secret and you don’t know anything. Then slowly you begin to put clues together and there was definitely an “I KNEW IT” moment that may or may not have woken my sweet sleeping baby.

Excellent fast paced psychological thriller for anyone who is into the psychiatrist/client relationship layered with secrets, lies and deception.

The ending left me with some questions. I wanted to know more about Claire and Mark and the what and how and why of it all. If those loose ends were tied up in a neat little bow then this would have been a 5 star read for me. It held my attention and seeped its way into my brain folds and will be sticking with me for a while.

Thank you to @abbydaviesauthor and @booksirens for the opportunity to be an ARC reader for this book, I believe it is due out on 1st February 2024!

Another excellent thriller from Abby Davies. This book was so intense and it had me thinking about it when I was trying to sleep - desperate to know more. There were so many twists and turns that you can't help devouring it. I thought I was clever and knew what was going to happen but I actually didn't get any twists correct! It was a complete surprise and one hell of a terrifying journey.

If you like psychological thrillers, untrustworthy characters, nail-biting moments, plot twists, short and snappy chapters, this one is for you!

I deffo need more work by this author. I've read this and The Girl Who Heard Maggots and they have been fantastic and so eerie!
