K.C. Wells lives on an island off the south coast of the UK, surrounded by natural beauty. She writes about men who love men, and can’t even contemplate a life that doesn’t include writing. The rainbow rose tattoo on her back with the words 'Love is Love' and 'Love Wins' is her way of hoisting a flag. Oh my gosh, Aaron's Awakening might just be the funniest book in the Maine Men series! K.C. Wells is on point, and if you're looking for a truly 'feel good' romance, this one will fit the bill. You can read all the books in this series as standalones, but it is fun to read them in order as each of the friends finds their happily ever afters.
Aaron and Dean have such great chemistry, and I enjoyed watching this friendship blossom into a romance. K.C. Wells always writes gorgeous erotica, and Aaron's first time is one for the record books (*winks*). Hella hot!
So let's be honest, I've been waiting for this book since the very moment I finished Shaun's Salvation. And it's been a long, impatient waiting. It's been a mystery for me how Aaron's story would turn out. As the series only "straight" guy, I was scared that we would get a lot of freaking out from Aaron's side. Thankfully, that's not what we got at all.
This book turned out to be one of the sweetest out of all six so far. I loved the chemistry between Aaron and Dean and I loved how sweet, fluffy and absolutely swoon worthy it was. On top of that it was hot. Basically it was all I wanted.
Maine Men is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite series. I love these guys and the friendship between all of them. And I can't wait for Levi and Noah's book. Even though it's a little panicky about it being the last book in the series. I'm not ready to say goodbye.
I know I've said this in every review I've written for this series but these books are not meant to be read as standalones. I guess you could but it really won't give you the same reading experience.
Aaron is a ranger and Dean is an artist. The two form a friendship when Dean moves back to Maine. Aaron discovers things about himself and Dean is cautious because of his past. Overall this was a sweet romance with a bi-awakening.
I will note that although I think you can read this as a standalone, I feel like the previous books should be read. There is a dynamic between Aaron and his friends that I feel would be better understood if their stories were read too. I did not know this was part of a series before accepting the ARC 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ I will go read the other books because this one made me want to 😁
It would have been odd if Aaron remained the only one of this group to remain single even though he'd been the 'straight' friend from the start.
I liked how KC set up a connection between him and Dean even before they met through the painting at Grammy's house.
It made their friendship an easy one to buy into and, as his other friends had fallen one by one, it also wasn't out of the ordinary for Aaron to realise his sexuality was more fluid.
Dean was a lovely man, someone who'd been badly hurt by a previous lover deciding he'd been an experiment and so I got his wariness over how quickly he snd Aaron bonded.
What I loved best about this narrative though, was the total lack of angsting or overly dramatic sudden plot points thrown in. The tension arises naturally through both men worrying the other may not want more.
Thankfully they're grown up enough to have a conversation about it 🙂
And so now we're left with Levi and Noah, which will be fascinating I'm sure.
4.25 stars. Aaron isn’t quite aware he got a longing in his eyes when he looks at his friends who (almost) all have a committed relationship. He’s an easygoing guy, always thought he was straight until he meets Dean.
Dean returned to Maine and start painting again. He’s not looking for a partner, the last one ended badly and he’s still wearing the scars on his soul. Aaron is just a friend.
They start a friendship, and one of the things they do is get on walks through the beautiful landscape. More and more time they spent together, they have fun and at some point, they got to friends with benefits. It just started naturally as if it was meant to be.
You can guess what happens, they fit so perfectly, in no time they go all the way. Both keep their heart somewhat locked, afraid to get rejected or lose a friendship.
It was a joy to watch them, they have so much fun, a strong friendship is growing, there’s some steam to enjoy and a lot of camaraderie. Of course, we meet grammy and the other guys from the circle of friends. Dean’s painting skills are beautifully entwined with the story. It’s such a comfortable read, no stress or nasty things are happening, just a sweet friendship with some delicious benefits. It all felt organic, honest, and uncomplicated, with just the sweetest MCs. Overall another great addition to the series, I’m so excited for the next installment!
I‘ve loved all the Maine Men books. It’s so much fun to get together with all the guys. It’s like visiting old friends. I savor these books and let some time pass between each one. I already have Levi’s story, and I’m looking forward to reading about him and Noah. These books just make me feel good. I own them all so I can go back and read them again.
I felt that my 4-star rating needed a little qualification. Not to suggest that this is not an enjoyable read, but I think one needs to be in the right mood.
As tired as I am of hearing people throw the term around like a buzzword, I’ll call it what it is: this book is a “warm hug.” Most of the drama is in the backstory; miscommunications are downplayed, and no one is raging or in tears. This train is very solidly on the tracks to HEA.
If you are craving complication and high drama in your romantic fiction, maybe circle back. However, if you could use a minty refreshment like two excruciatingly sweet guys with a meddling-but-big-hearted supporting cast coming together…frequently…then this could be a read for you.
I’ve said in every book I’ve read & reviewed in this series how much I’ve loved all of them. This author is an auto buy for me, but I’ve particularly enjoyed this series more than anything else she’s written in the last couple of years and each book has been a 5 star read. I recommend reading them in order, because although they work well as stand-alones you will miss seeing how the other couples being mentioned got together. I love series like this where you see a group of friends gradually get paired off and the group as a whole expand, and then see extra glimpses of those couples in the later books. Although they are a group of school friends that have spread out a bit over the years, it’s great that the big found family gets together for all major events. This one is Aaron’s story, who we were previously led to believe was the straight one in the group of friends. How his friendship with Dean leads into exploration and discovery of his feelings was lovely. It was low angst, with no made up conflict to cause a big argument (I hate it when stories do this to create a “climax”), just an acceptance of how he feels. He has a supportive parent and the wonderful Grammy - I really loved the element of the plot featuring her and her birthday present. This one was also quite funny in places, they had some great banter and you can always rely on the friends to poke fun at each other. I will be really sad to see this series come to and end with the next and final book - but from the glimpse at the back I feel it’s going to be another good one!
What a great story, these two were absolutely wonderful and sweet, and funny.
This was my first KC Wells novel (though many have made my TBR list), and as with every ‘new-to-me’ author I didn’t know what to expect, but I can say this surpassed those expectations. And I can confirm that reading the rest of the Maine Men series has moved up my reading list.
The writing, pacing, humour, and love were all fabulous. It felt perfect for the setting and who they were, and I love a story where a true friendship is developed, then blossoms into more. There were moments of tears, but mostly it was playful and loving.
I’m already super invested in Levi and Noah’s story coming next, and can’t wait to go back and get the stories of the rest of this tight-knit group of friends.
< ARC provided by GRR and this is my honest review >
RTC but I was already in love witj this series when I started this one and this book just solified my love for the series. God this book was kust the sweetest thing ever. It was just such a good sexual exploration and I enjoyed it, so much.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest opinion
**Do Not Read if you haven't read the previous books in the series!**
This was a Low angst, bi awakening that was actually sweet AF. Aaron, the confirmed bachelor, and Dean who has spent years nursing a broken heart were just so beautiful together. I loved how open Aaron was to discovering his bisexuality with Dean. He'd been around queer men all his life. It was nothing to freak out about in his eyes. Their love story flowed so easily. I honestly think this was the least dramatic of the whole series.
I loved seeing all the Maine Men again. They are a bunch of ball busters, but that's what makes them so great. Their bonds of friendship have lasted through so much and I love how they are always there for each other. Levi especially is always willing to lend an ear to a friend and I cannot wait to read his book. He's the last one last, apart from Noah who hasn't found his HEA. We've been teased in every book that Levi had his heart set on someone. Now that we know it's Noah, I'm looking forward to reading all about it even more!
This is a continuing series with eight friends who have been finding their love partners one by one. This one is Aaron's story, who first time with a man and not just any man but a man who has been burned by a straight man who was bi-curious. But Dean was ready to move on and get his life back on track and start painting again. You will fall in love with these two. I volunteer to review this Advanced Readers Copy of this book.
I absolutely adored Aaron and Dean! From the blurb I was expecting a sweet and heartwarming romance, which this totally is, but it was also so much fun! Aaron and Dean's personalities and their dynamic together had me laughing so much! This was a refreshing love story! Also worth a mention is that we get some Swoon worthy first times in this one! I read an arc and I cannot wait for the next book in these series! Love that in each one we get to catch up with everyone here in Maine!
This is the sixth book in the Maine Men series and what a wonderful book it is! I'm sure that after I've read each book, that one was my favourite and this is no exception.
Aaron is a declared bachelor and even though five of his group of six friends have found love over the past year, he cannot see it happening for him. Aaron thinks of himself as straight, but begins to question this after a chance meeting with a painter named Dean and also some eye opening and unwanted conversations with his mother! Dean has returned to Maine to try and rekindle his love of landscape painting after suffering a traumatic break up and painting portraits for years. It is while he's sketching a lighthouse that he meets hansom, Acadia National Park ranger Aaron, who comers to check on him and his unsteady easel. They hit it off immediately and over the next few weeks become good friends and romance begins to blossom. They both decide they want to be more than friends with benefits, but neither can bring themselves to tell the other for fear of frightening them away, especially with each of their past histories with romance. Everything becomes clear to both of them on their journey to Grammy's birthday party and with an audience watching them kiss, there is no denying what is between them!
This is a beautiful, easy to read book with lots of humour together with hotness in equal measure. Aaron and Dean are wonderful characters and you really want them to be happy together. The scenes including the other seven friends and their partners were so good, and because of the brilliant writing, the reader really feels like they are there. I'll miss these boys and Grammy of course, when the series finishes after the next book, as they feel like family, but I really want Levi to find his HEA with Noah, the final two of the eight friends to find love. I 100% recommend this series. All the books are beautifully written and the characters are all fantastic.
Edited 6/7/22 to add my comments about the audiobook: Audiobook Review: Overall – 5 Performance – 5 Story – 5
Once again, John Solo did a fantastic job performing this audiobook. I'm so glad that KC has been using him for her books in this series.
A great bi-awakening story.
If you haven’t read the other books in this series, I think you can read this as a standalone but you will probably enjoy it more if you’ve read the series in order. I love how K.C. Wells has woven all of the Maine Men stories together while giving each couple their own HEA in their individual books.
I’ve really enjoyed seeing each of the guys in this tight group of friends get their HEA. Aaron gets his in this story just not quite the way he expected. Aaron has always been pretty laid back and we really get to see that in this story. He’s the only one of his group of friends who’s straight – or so he thought.
Dean had a bad breakup with a boyfriend five years ago and it really set him into a tailspin. He was no longer able to paint the beautiful canvases he had become known for and instead started doing illustrations for books, albeit not under his real name. When he meets Aaron something clicks and he starts painting again like crazy; he’s found a new muse – too bad he’s straight.
I love a good bi-awakening story and this one is beautiful. It has the added bonus of being a friends-to-lovers one as Aaron and Dean begin a great friendship before they start a friends-with-benefits arrangement and finally move on to something much deeper.
It was great getting to visit with all of the Maine Men again and I especially love Levi’s Grammy. I have to make one tiny observation about Grammy…she’s 70 years old and depicted as someone who needs to take naps and needs help in her garden. I live in an over 55 community and I know many women in their mid-80’s who spend a lot of time gardening, taking long bike rides, dancing and enjoying other vigorous activities. I’m sure it’s hard for authors to decide what is the right age to make someone they want to be considered elderly.
When I come across characters like Grammy while reading I just kind of laugh to myself and move on. I love K.C.’s writing and this did not affect my enjoyment of the story, it’s just an observation that I felt compelled to make. 😊
I’m really going to be sad to see this series end but I also can’t wait to read Levi and Noah’s story coming in late August.
A copy of this book was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
K.C. Wells has created a very pleasant world with the Maine Men series. In this book, Aaron, a national park ranger, considers himself heterosexual and happily single - if he doesn't analyze it too closely. He's often alone and lonely. Dean, an artist, has recently moved to the area and is sketching by a lighthouse in preparation for painting a landscape. The two strike up an immediate friendship. As they rack up more and more shared interests and enjoyable times together, they both realize that their relationship might be something more. This book details their interesting, warm, passionate, and loving relationship, including Aaron's awakening to his own bisexuality.
I haven't read the rest of the series, but after reading this one, I'm going to have to go back and read the series. I enjoyed Aaron and Dean. I appreciated how their friendship organically transformed into love. It wasn't forced or rushed, They weren't even looking for it. I loved watching romance develop between these two. All of the characters from the previous books helped keep this story entertaining. I literally only put it down for sleep. I truly feel in love with Aaron and Dean and their journey to love.
Well I am so glad that Aaron finally got his love story. Dean who is an artist that has been burned by love and is afraid of commitment. When they meet life changes for them both. I really enjoyed this book and will be sad after the series finishes with Levi's book which is next.
I absolutely love this series and almost always fall instantly for the couple that Ms. Wells brings to our attention, but this one is so different in characters, theme and pace that I am going to state right away that this one is my favorite, and the best so far.
Part of the reason is that both MCs are gingers--supposedly straight Aaron the park ranger on the cover and openly gay Dean, slightly older approaching 40, an artist who escapes to Aaron's little Maine town for reasons which are pretty strong and as it turns out, giddily circumstantial.
I am not a big fan of this kind of trope--straight man and gay man becoming friends and then...well, you know what happens. However, author Wells handles it so well and is aided by her smart decision to involve most of the characters from the previous books in the plot line and developing romance that the end result is total credibility--and a wonderful read.
*4.5* Aaron's Awakening is a lighter touch after the emotion packed into Shaun's Salvation. Aaron's always been the 'straight' guy of the group of friends but finds himself very opening in exploring something with the new man who has moved to town. Dean has had his heart broken by a man who was just experimenting and it's only recently that's he's started back at doing what he loves, painting, which is how he and Aaron meet as he's scouting a location. Friendship is quick to blossom between them, both being quite lonely I think. Aaron may have an amazing group of friends but they live several hours away. Together, they share hikes, meals and laughs as a bond strengthens between them. When they're open about exploring more together, it's full steam ahead. I love how open Aaron is to the idea and he really gets into it, though that is probably more to do with it being Dean specifically rather than just a man. It's a fairly low angst story but does have the worry for Dean about repeating history and having the man he falls for turning around and saying that actually, he's going back to being with just women. As has been the case throughout this series, the group of friends are highly entertaining but equally supportive. My heart goes out to Levi but knowing his story is coming up next has me eager to find out how things turn out for him and all of the men in the group. Another highly recommended read from this author. This one is fairly light, rather heated with laughs aplenty between the MCs. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
While out on his Ranger walks Aaron meets hottie Artist Dean and more than friendship begins. This is a simplistic, sweet romantic tale, full of happy families, amusing friends, and likable MCs. Overall, a charming read. I look forward to Levi’s tale.

Aaron's Awakening Maine Men, Book 6 By: K.C. Wells Narrated by: John Solo
K.C. Wells’ Maine Men series is one of my favorite series and I do not have just one reason I have eight and that is not including the author’s wonderful writing style. Those eight reasons are: Levi, Noah, Aaron, Ben, Dylan, Finn, Seb, and Shaun, a group of friends who have bonded over the years. These characters are amazing and so are their stories, they are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with, they are easy to care about and fall for too. Each book features a different lead character, one of those Maine men, and since they are all friends, they reappear in each other’s books as well, but the books stand on their own and everything you need to know is in the descriptive details so you never feel lost or as if you are missing something, but seeing the other characters are like seeing old friends if you have read or listened to the earlier books. This book is Aaron’s story, and I loved we got to see more of the Maine men gatherings again and the group has expanded to include the significant others and new found loves from the first five books, so now they are up to thirteen. Aaron, the one straight guy of the group, has watched his friends find their soul mates, but he has not found that for himself and has given up on finding love but he soon learns love will come when he least expects it and not how or who he expected. Dean, an artist, was heartbroken when his lover burned him not only by leaving him for a woman but by saying he was just an experiment. He also lost his muse and his desire to paint that day. A couple of years have passed, and he finally thinks he is ready to paint again and goes to Maine for inspiration. Dean, an artist, was heartbroken when his lover burned him not only by leaving him for a woman but by saying he was just an experiment. He also lost his muse and his desire to paint that day. A couple of years have passed, and he finally thinks he is ready to paint again and goes to Maine for inspiration. While exploring the landscape, he meets the park ranger and starts chatting it up with him. He felt an instant connection to him, though it was disappointing to learn he was straight, but the two continued to spend time together as friends. Aaron feels the connection and starts to question his sexuality, and the two have an open dialogue about it. Dean thinks he learned his lesson about getting involved with a straight man from his past relationship, but Aaron is not his ex. This is a beautifully written and plotted story that has a perfect balance of drama, heartfelt emotions, and some steamy romance. K.C. Wells, thank you for another wonderful story that just charmed my heart.
🎧📚🎧 And for the wonderful narration, John Solo continues to do an amazing job bringing these characters and their stories to life. His portrayal of the characters is exceptional, as are his character voices, which have been consistent throughout the entire series. He sets the perfect tone for the story and his pacing is spot on. You could hear how much heart he puts into his work as he captures all the characters’ emotions and projects them into his performance. John Solo is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to and his narration enhances an already amazing story to another level. Thank you for another fabulous listen.
Title - Aaron's Awakening (Maine Men #6) Author - K.C Wells Genre - MM Romance Published - May 2022 Pages - 295 Pages
Aaron works in Arcadia National Park, he's a laid back guy who just goes with the flow, he's really happy for all his friends as they all start to find their partners and fall in love but he's starting to think he's going to be the only single one left. Not that he's looking for anyone. Maybe one day he'll find a nice woman, younger than him and just as disinterested in this soulmate nonsense as he is. Well, he couldn't be more wrong if he tried. One day Aaron meets Dean, a quiet guy who was paining when Aaron met him and for some reason, Aaron can't get Dead out of his head. Is life about to throw Aaron some serious curveballs?
I really enjoyed this book, I found the characters to be likeable, We've met Aaron in the previous books and have always been led to believe he's the straight one in the group, It's nice to see him finally get his happily ever after. Dean is such a sweetie. I particularly enjoyed how there's very little angst within this book. The plot flows well and is easy to read. I haven't read every book in this series but I have read a couple of them. So these books can be read as standalone but I imagine they are better if read in order.
I really enjoyed the plot, it was interesting, kept me hooked and needing to read on and it also made me want to go back and reread the previous books I've read and read the ones I've missed. So this is defiantly on my to-read again list as I have every intention of going back and starting the series again. The pace of the story was really good. I enjoy this author's writing style, this author has quickly become one of my favourite authors and is an auto-buy for me.
If you enjoy small-town MM Romances, with sweet, beautiful characters then this is the book and the series for you.
