Volume 2- Spring At The Royal Palace

I really am liking this so far, but there’s one large complaint that I want to put out there.

I don’t love the way that the author goes about writing the characters’ dynamic. With danmei like this, I notice that they consistently have heteronormative roles for characters that define who’s the protector, who’s protected, who’s beautiful, who’s handsome, etc, etc. Granted, there have been danmeis that utilize these stereotypes but still treat the relationship as a queer relationship. It’s just a little frustrating in this case when there’s a relationship with two men in it, but one is placed into the female role. I know that Wei Lian’s circumstances contribute to that treatment, but it seems to extend beyond the perspectives of others and into their private affairs. It just maintains this idea of masculinity and power in a relationship being one sided (which shouldn’t be the case, even in straight relationships).

However, even though I don’t like some elements being heteronormative, the characters themselves do seem to defy their roles slightly in Wei Lian’s quiet declarations to look after Ji Yue and protect him instead. It is also apparent in the way Ji Yue offers to be Wei Lian’s queen, and thus, returning Wei Lian’s masculinity back to him when the rest of the world seems to see him as nothing more than a concubine or male pet.

Ultimately, that’s why I rate it highly. As the series goes on, it seems like the characters are becoming self aware and the roles seem to matter less the more their bond grows.
