I've read this short story multiple times as it was included in Cooke's collection, "Dark Play", which I co-edited for Salò Press, however it rewards those multiple readings because whilst on the surface the story might appear slight, there is so much cleverly unsaid. Cooke's stories unsettle in their otherness - you never quite know whether something weird is happening or not. This subtly is a great strength and I heartily recommend both this and all his work.
