4★ “When he was four years old, his uncle Toni gave him his first tennis lesson.”
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Born on the island of Mallorca in 1986, Rafael Nadal Parera was a talented child playing both soccer and tennis. One uncle played professional soccer and one was a tennis coach. “From the moment that Rafa hit the ball, he showed all the qualities that make a remarkable tennis player: coordination, flexibility, agility, and quick reflexes.”
He was the top scorer on a winning soccer team, but he was also winning tennis matches against much older players. Because that’s where he felt his natural talent was, tennis was the sport he chose. Uncle Toni continued to coach him, and Rafa took it seriously. “ Rafa was always the first to arrive at practice and the last to leave, having swept the court and picked up all of the balls.”
Poor kid, watching the others, all packed up and waving goodbye as he drags the cleaning mat up the court. I assume that’s Uncle Toni taking notes on the sidelines.
As he grew up, he was so dedicated that he continued playing a match with a broken finger and could hardly hold the trophy. He won countless matches – well, not countless, because there are people who count these things, but he was an amazing, resilient player.
He had countless injuries, and I bet they are countless, because who really wants to keep track of them? Each time I thought he was done, he came back, getting back into winning form.
In 2008, in the Wimbledon men’s finals, he and Roger Federer played a still-talked-about match. “He played the most legendary tennis battle ever against Roger Federer, another exceptional player. They met in London at a Wimbledon tournament, and after four hours and forty-eight minutes, Rafa won the final.”
You can still watch it online if you have a spare five hours and a drink and a snack and an armchair and are prepared to exhaust yourself watching a pair of champions at work.
He’s also known for his charity work, and when his home island was quick to help in the floods that hit Mallorca. “ Still, Rafa’s not just about tennis. When Mallorca, his home, was hit by devastating floods, he was among the first to help with the cleanup.”
As with all the Little People BIG DREAMS books, there are four photographs and a short biography at the end with a recommendation for further reading. Here are two that are how I think of Rafa. Never give up! “Spain’s Rafael Nadal celebrates after winning a point against France’s Arnaud Clement during the third and last day of their Davis Cup semifinal in Alicante, Spain Sunday Sept. 26, 2004. (AP Photo/Ramon Espinosa)”
And always give back. Rafael Nadal participating in a tennis clinic with children from The Child Center of NY at Flushing Meadows Tennis Center in Queens New York City, USA - 25.08.11”
He is, by all accounts, a lovely guy who never says no to charity. I enjoyed learning a bit about him in this little book (and in the rabbit holes I went down looking for more detail). The illustrations are colourful and appealing and would be excellent for a generic story about a tennis player, but they look nothing like Rafael Nadal, who has quite distinctive features. The headband helps.
Thanks to #NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for the copy for review from which I’ve shared a few illustrations. It’s a terrific series.
[This is being published on 4 June 2024, the day after his 38th birthday. Happy birthday, Rafa!]
This is a fun children's book discussing the story of the tennis player, Rafa Nadal. The illustrations are very cute and eye-catching. I think children will absolutely enjoy this book and learn something about this athlete. This is part of a series of biographies written by this author that are well researched and engaging.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I am fairly oblivious to the world of sport - but even I noticed when Rafa Nadal played! This is a beautiful addition to the little people, big dreams series.
This is a story about a young boy who loves football and tennis. His uncle was his tennis coach. He worked hard until made it to the championships. This book proved that with determination, you can reach your goals. The illustration helped visualize the struggles he experienced along the way. Highly recommended to be read to toddlers and inspire them to take up the sport of tennis. Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group-Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for sending this book for recommendation. All opinions are my own.
Switching from art to sports, the next book that caught my eye was a children's book about the world-famous tennis player Rafael Nadal. Personally, I haven't been very involved with the world of tennis, and it's a good day if I know the names of the top athletes. I figured, since I had started exploring new topics, why not continue and educate myself alongside children around the world? 😊
Rafael Nadal is a tennis player from Spain. When Nadal was young, his uncles taught him both football and tennis. Rafael was very good at both, but he seemed to have a special, innate talent for tennis. As we know, he chose to pursue tennis, and the rest is history. A top athlete was born, captivating millions with his skills and abilities. We can only hope that future little global citizens will draw inspiration from this book and that, in a few decades, we will meet new superstars following in Nadal's footsteps.
The illustrations in this book are quite different from those in the Vincent van Gogh book. This time, they are done in digital art, with a style and pastel color palette that perfectly suit the world of tennis. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it to young readers and sports enthusiasts! 😊
Thank you so much, NetGallery and Frances Lincoln Children's Books, for this wonderful reading experience and for the ARC copy!
This was another lovely Little People, Big Dreams book. Our family loves these books because they are short but interesting and often inspiring, as was the case with Rafa Nadal's story. My daughter was inspired reading about Rafa's perseverance in his sport and was impressed by his prestigious winning record. I thought this story was very relatable for kids because it shared Rafa's struggles in his pursuit of success. I highly recommend this book and others in the series for young readers to explore biographies and history.
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for gifting our family with an ARC to review. All opinions are our own. We enjoyed it!
A sweet little book about an exceptional player. And a great way for children to see if you work hard and you love something, you can go far. But to always remain who you've been. Rafa did that. Cute cute book and I can't wait for my kids to read it.
I didn’t know anything about the life of Rafa Nadal apart from playing tennis so was happy to find out more in this fab picture book for younger children. He was born on the Spanish island of Mallorca and had his first tennis lesson at the age of 4! He was a determined player even winning a tennis tournament with a broken finger! He’s had lots of injuries over the years, but he’s always come back to reclaim his place at the top of his game. He’s known for his kindness on and off the court, particularly helping with a cleanup after his Mallorcan hometown was hit by devastating floods. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for my digital copy via the NetGalley app.
This is one of the books in the Little People, Big Dreams series which I've seen absolutely everywhere, but only just started working my way through! (I know ....where have I been!?)
I'm not really a big sports fan, but I do love to watch Wimbledon in the summer. Again, not a huge follower, but I do keep track on the big names - and Rafa is up there with the best.
It was great to see where he started out and it's so inspiring to watch his passion grow over the years. I can't believe that he'd been training since the age of 4! And that he also was a great footballer too! Imagine being that good at multiple sports that you have to choose!
Rafa is so passionate about his sport that he even played with a broken finger! Ouch! That shows such dedication, perseverance and resilience - all great qualities to display to encourage the youngsters who are reading these books!
I also liked that his fear of the dark was included in the book - it made him seem more like a real person (rather than untouchable famous person) and lots of children could relate to this and see that having some fears doesn't make you weak.
Dreams can still be achieved if you work hard and have a passion for your work.
This was a super quick read - full of information - but told in a way that was interesting and fun. The illustrations were great too, with lots of detail to look at and prompt discussion with younger readers.
This series is actually amazing and I really must add more to my tbr - there are over 100 books in the series already and, like this one, many more still being added.
Great for school libraries, classroom learning, home education shelves and for any of us adults who just love reading!
Rafa Nadal is a well known tennis player, but that is about all I knew about him. As with all the books in the Little People, BIG DREAMS series, the book starts with his childhood and dreams. Rafa was quite the athlete when he was young being good at both baseball and tennis, but it was tennis that really called to him. His Uncle Toni, became his coach building on his agility, quick reflexes, flexibility and coordination. Rafa had a drive to succeed and even played with a broken finger, not telling anyone. He won many tournaments on his own and with his Davis Cup team. His goal was to win the biggest tournaments, The Grand Slam. Although a successful athlete, he still works hard, especially when rehabbing injuries. He is also a humanitarian, physically helping when his home, Mallorca was hit by devastating floods. He works with charities to use education and sports to help children achieve their best and strive to reach their goals. With all this, he is still a humble young man. All of these books include photographs and a timeline at the back of the book for additional information. If you are looking for a way to help kids reach for the stars and go after their dreams, pick up this book or any in the Little People, Big Dreams series. The illustrations by Rocio Ledesma were cute and whimsical and add to the book. This is one I recommend to school and public libraries.
Rafa Nadal by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is another release in the Little People, Big Dreams series, which I have reviewed frequently on here. I just love these little books. They are always packed with facts about the person who they are writing about and full of colourful illustrations throughout.
Little Rafa was born in Majorca, Spain. Encouraged by his two uncles, he loved playing football and tennis, but found that he particularly excelled at tennis. At only fifteen years old, he became a professional! Soon, he was ranked as one of the best on the court, and at age twenty-two, he was proclaimed the number one tennis player in the whole world. Since then, Rafa has won many trophies, including twenty-two Grand Slams. His self-confidence, perseverance, and determination are the keys to his success.
I found this little book full of easy to read, with great Illustrations throughout this small book.
I am so glad these books are being published and I highly recommend all of these books
Many thanks to Frances Lincoln Children’s Books and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Rafa Nadal by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara explores the life of this vibrant personality. From a young age, Rafa loved games with balls. His uncle gave him his very first tennis lesson at age 4! Though he was also passionate about soccer, his family encouraged him to focus on one sport and excel at it. (One thing- I do wish that the proper name for soccer had been used, especially since Rafa isn't American. Fútbol would be the more appropriate term.) Rafa has won 22 tennis Grand Slams around the world. Today, Nadal is one of the great sportsmen of tennis.
The entire Little People, Big Dreams series is an awesome introduction to biographical reading for young audiences. Not only that, but they focus on the most inspirational of people from science, entertainment, sports, politics and more. It’s also a very diverse series.
At the end is a section with more detailed information on Nadal’s life, suitable for older readers. Inspirational and educational both, this entire series is great, and full of delightful art to engage younger audiences!
***Many thanks to the Netgalley & Quarto Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Another great installation of the Little People, Big Dreams series. I did not know much about Rafa Nadal aside from just recognizing his name as a famous tennis player. I really appreciated the story of his life in a digestible manner for young kids. The focus on not just his talent in tennis, but also his work ethic and the charity work that he does helps to portray a well rounded person making an impact on and off the tennis court.
The illustrations are great in this story - really well executed and they help support the story that's being told in the text. The timeline at the end of the book focuses on key highlights of Rafa's life and give additional detail to support the story that's told earlier in the book. I think this is a great addition to the series and also will be very attractive to kids who are interested in sports and/or who enjoy reading about talented individuals who are making a broader impact in their community.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC of this book to read and review!
Received for review: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Why did I decide to turn the pages? I love this series. Most of the books are very informative, and I love the diverse representation in the series. So when I was given the chance to review it, I took it.
My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: I always enjoy this series, and this one was no exception. It can be difficult to distill a person's life down into a children's book with so little text and so few pages, but Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara does a great job. I have liked almost every book in this series. This one has a great message of working hard to acheive your dream and great illustrations.
Rafa is a championship tennis competitor who was born in Majorca Spain, gifted with sports talents, and tutored in soccer and tennis by his uncles. But he was once a young boy who has problems with nighttime darkness. He is also a man who gives back to his hometown and to others who need help. The illustrations by Rocio Ledesma are fun, simple, brilliantly colorful, and meaningful. Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your local public library! I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Quarto Publishing Group/Frances Lincoln Children's Books via NetGalley. Thank you! Expected publication 04 Jun 2024 @QuartoKids @CBCBook @Frances_Lincoln #LittlePeopleBIG DREAMS @sanchezvegara @TheQuartoGroup
I absolutely love the 'Little People, BIG DREAMS' series and the different types of people that are chosen to be the main character in every one of the books. The books are a perfect way to introduce inspiring people, that all have their own story of how they came to be where they are today.
In this particular one, the story is about Nadal's claim to success and the successes he's experienced on the tennis court. On top of that, there is also a mention of his charity work.
I found this particular book in the series a little flatter than other ones, cause Nadal's story was success upon success upon success. However, it made for a great introduction and as always the story is accompanied by wonderful illustrations.
Definitely recommend! Thanks for the ARC, Netgalley!
I love the books in this series and always find something new in them.
This was a book that focused on a famous tennis player and sporting legend - Rafael Nada, or Rafa as he is called in this book - with this book we get to read a little about his early life and his adventures in his quest to succeed - he is a real role model with some superb determination and a brilliant drive to succeed.
Rafa is a true inspiration and although he is now moving away from playing so many professional tournaments he is still a power in the sport and his coaching school will be creating the tennis stars of the future.
Lovely images and another great addition to the series - it is 4 stars from me for this one
Another really inspirational one, with lots of great facts about his younger years. Both specifically about his sporting and just general facts that I think kids would be interested to hear about. Lovely illustrations, bright and engaging. Kids will absolutely love this book I'm sure! The only thing I wish, and I mentioned this in my review for another one too, is that it was called Rafael Nadal? Although I have heard him occasionally called Rafa I didn't think that's what he generally went by, so I would have thought Rafael was more appropriate? Although I don't watch an awful lot of tennis, usually just a bit of Wimbledon here and there so I could be wrong about that.
"Rafa remains what he's always been: a humble champion and an exceptional human being."
I didn't know much about Rafa apart from that he played tennis. It was interesting to see with the help and encouragement from his family especially from his uncle that he is what he is today. He is a role model not just through the tennis world by being down to earth especially with his charity work and just being a good human being by helping whenever something needed doing. A good lesson that many children can learn to live by.
I loved the illustrations as perusal
Thank you Netgalley for a copt of the book for an honest review.
Surely this series could have raised fewer arguments by publishing biographies about three male tennis players at the same time, but here at least Nadal gets his name in lights. This likes to trumpet his achievements as well as his personality, and you cannot disagree with the way it declares Nadal one of the best tennis players ever. Should he get his book before or after a couple of other contenders – that's up for debate, but what's not is that this is perfectly fine, a decent-looking, snappy little life story, emphasising character and spirit as much as natural sporting ability.
I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Another lovely book from Little People, Big Dreams - one of my favourite series, and I have a feeling the sport biographies for kids are quite possible my favourite in these series or maybe because I know the least about these awesome humans, I learn the most from these? An idea I should explore.
I am a big fan of Rafa and his tennis career, but I admit I did not know much about his childhood or how he came into playing tennis nor did I know about his work outside the tennis realm.
I love and recommend this whole series. These books help even very young readers learn biographies of famous people. Every book is bright and the illustrations are cute. In this one, we learn the background of tennis great Rafa Nadal. I thought it was especially interesting that he comes from a family with a soccer player and he used to play soccer himself, but Rafa decided to play tennis from a young age and was successful even as a teen. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
Here is another entry in the delightful biography series for children. It is sure to be enjoyed by young tennis fans (and their adults).
Rafa Nadal is one of the best known and most successful tennis players ever but how did he get there? Well, for one thing, he was a hard worker. Find out more about Nadal in this engagingly illustrated story that has additional resources at the end of the book.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title. All opinions are my own.
"...Rafa remains what he's always been: a humble champion and an exceptional human being."
Yet another wonderful addition to the Little People, BIG DREAMS family. Rafa Nadal has had an incredible career and still continues to prove his worth. Anyone who picks up this book will not be disappointed.
My thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children's Books for providing me with this book in exchange for an honest review.
A fabulous addition to the Little People Big Dreams series, the story of Rafa Nadal is beautifully told and illustrated.
The author portrays Rafa as a talented sports man, which indeed we all know, but also tells of his drive to succeed, his love of his home island and his care for others. I loved the inclusion of his fear of the dark in a book aimed at a young audience - the perfect way to make them realise we are all human.
A very short summary of Rafa's life story from where it all started to what he's achieved. This does not have abundant information but gives a decent introduction to Rafa. My main concern with this book is the illustration. None of them look even remotely close to Rafa expect for the head band. Since this is a picture book, it was a bummer to not connect with the images. Thanks to NetGalley and Publisher for providing the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
4 stars I read a digital advanced copy courtesy of the publisher and Edelweiss. This entry in the Little People, Big Dreams series features tennis talent Rafa Nadal who has one more than to championships. As usual, Vegara starts with the childhood of the subject and shows how the subject became interested in their known field and how they developed their natural talents.
Always a pleasure reading the series. This one is about Rafa Nadal, the famous tennis player, though not into tennis myself, I only knew him by name. Rafa was from a well to do family, thus he can learn tennis at early age. But it doesn't make him less compassionate to others, he helped wherever he is needed, and also made a foundation to help others. A good role model to children nowadays.
