I'm Tom Huddleston, author of fiction and non-fiction for adults and children. I've written books on famous creatives including DAVID LYNCH: HIS WORK, HIS WORLD; THE WORLDS OF GEORGE RR MARTIN and THE WORLDS OF DUNE, all about the inspirations behind the greatest SF novel of all time.
For younger readers, I've written original adventure stories like the FLOODWORLD trilogy (FLOODWORLD, DUSTROAD and STORMTIDE), along with several episodes in the WARHAMMER ADVENTURES and STAR WARS: ADVENTURES IN WILD SPACE series.
I also write about film and TV for publications including Time Out, the BFI and The Guardian, and I sing in a folk-rock band called The No Sorrows.
I was born in Kendal and raised in North Yorkshire, though I now live in London. I realise that I almost have the same name as Loki, but rest assured I'm not him: I'm slightly rounder and a lot less famous. However, I have managed to make him admit that it's his family who spell their name wrong, not mine.
THE RUNAWAY RUMBLEBEAR is a charming sci-fi chapter book. The story transports the reader to another planet, Vela, where Charlie and her family have settled. Life on a new planet can be tough- and even tougher when she finds out that all their shimmer-apples have been stolen. With her best friend, Random the robot, they follow the trail of the thieves and end up discovering a young animal that they had not met before that they name Silver.
As Charlie tries to keep Silver secret until she can return him to his family, she begins to realize why they have taken all the apples, and hopefully, she can help to find a solution.
What I loved: This is a clever sci-fi read that will appeal to children who love adventure, imagination, and animals. There are some important lessons about colonization and taking care of indigenous species that are sprinkled throughout, as Charlie considers the impact of their settling on Silver and his family. The final theme includes learning how to share and take care of the animals and world around you.
The story is a fun one with plenty of mystery and sci-fi elements. Charlie and Random the robot are compelling characters that young readers will enjoy. As a chapter book, it has slightly larger than typical font for independent readers as well as illustrations on key pages (there are not illustrations on every page spread, but most).
What left me wanting more: As a small thing, I did not love Charlie working so hard to keep secrets from her parents, especially for the young intended audience. In addition, the illustrations were somewhat hard to see as they have a very light, sketch-like quality to them. While they were well done, it would have helped them to have thicker lines or something else to make them more easily visible throughout.
Final verdict: THE RUNAWAY RUMBLEBEAR is a clever and engaging chapter book for young explorers who enjoy sci-fi and animals.
Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.

🐻 Your kids are going to love these stories! I can’t wait to share it with our school library! 🐻
1. 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 - Can we just talk about this cuteness? What child isn’t going to be immediately drawn to the cute, pink bear. Bravo to the illustrator on not only the cover but the rest of the pictures!
2. 𝐌𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 - Just who is stealing all of the food? Charlie and Random stumble upon a yet undiscovered animal. It quickly becomes apparent that he is part of the gang of thieves; however, things aren’t always what they seem!
3. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜 - What kids don’t love a space adventure. From robots to hovering and floating to three-headed alpacas, your young reader will be in awe of this world that Charlie and her friends live within!
4. 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡 - It might be human nature to be a tad bit selfish when it comes to a flourishing human race. This is a great message showing that it isn’t always only about humans and that every decision has consequences.
5. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 - A huge lesson to be learned. A sense of community will always be better than trying to dictate the ways of everyone. I loved how everyone and everything was able to come together for the betterment of all!
This was a quick, and pretty cute middle grade fiction read. Set on a different planet, Charlie befriends a Rumblebear, and the adventure that entails is pretty fun. It's a clean, pretty wholesome story, and I thought the illustrations were cute too! Loved the rumblebear - very cute. ^.^
I recevied a copy of the book from the publishers through LibraryThing Giveaways. I was not required to write a positive review, and all thoughts expressed are entirely my own.
Special thanks to the author(s), publisher, Goodreads and/or NetGalley for the review copy. All views and opinions expressed are honest and my own.
This was a fun and enjoyable read.
Our story takes place on a newly discovered planet, Vela, where Charlie, her robot friend, Random, her family and some other astronauts are the first inhabitants. While they discover and live on the land, they start noticing their food disappearing. However, Charlie discovers their cute little thief and tries her best to save the little creature while saving it from the wrath of the angry mayor.
The plot of this book is interesting. I liked the simplicity in the story, with detailed descriptions regarding the environment and small pieces of life. I enjoyed how the story uses the discovery of a new creature to express multiple emotions while progressing the story forward.
Although the story has a handful of characters, not many are critical to the story. Charlie and Random are the main characters of this story. Random, being a robot was interesting and I liked how its personality felt almost like another human character. Though I would have preferred if its name was not Random. Charlie is an enjoyable character, who is both curious and kind. Unfortunately, Charlie doesn’t interact with many other characters but it’s evident that she has a great bond with her family and is scared of the angry mayor.
The book itself has wonderful pictures throughout. They are detailed, greyscale pictures with an almost soft tone. They are well placed throughout the book, supporting the story in both critical and happy moments.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and I think it’s a great addition to any reading list because of its simplicity. The descriptions and fast pacing makes this a quick yet enjoyable read. Although the message in this book is slightly hidden, readers will enjoy the mystery and interactions within the story.
