A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Used this to plan my visit to Oahu

Took my wife to Oahu last week (12/13 thru 2/20) and while I had lived on Oahu for several years while I was in the military, there was a LOT that I didn’t get to discover about the island. This book filled in my knowledge gaps nicely. I found the book to be very up-to-date and full of lots of interesting tidbits about Oahu. It really came in handy for our day drive around the island whenit came to the hole in the wall eatery’s.

I borrowed this from an exchange shelf in our resort hotel in Waikiki. I did end up keeping the map because I marked it up and used it all week but then I returned it to the shelf. I was pleased with our hotel book exchange. Some good books there. I had watched many Youtubes before traveling to Hawaii but this guide was super helpful too. We had heard that there would be a resort daily fee and tax upon arrival and this was further explained in the book. I will search out more Lonely Planet guidebooks.

Lonely Planet does not disappoint. I have used these travel guides even as an impoverished college student trying to make my way throughout Europe by rail, and this series consistently highlights affordable activities. Best are the maps you will undoubtedly find within its pages, and the Honolulu version showed eateries at the bottom of most pages based on where you are. This one of two books helped me plan my family's Spring Break in Oahu last week. Fabulous!

TR made fun of me for buying this before we left, but I knew it would be a lifesaver. Great recommendations on food. Good maps. If you are a Lonely Planet person like I am, you'll love this. We used it everyday. Even had a section on Barack Obama's hangouts.

Really, really helpful in planning my trip. Exactly what I was looking for with a collection of highlights and details about those highlights - much more helpful than the Internet has been. The only way it could be improved is if there had been more pictures.

Best guide out there for Oahu. Excellent! One more thing... if you want to eat amazing sushi and are staying in Waikiki, be sure to reserve a spot at Morio's Sushi on Kuhio Ave.

This is a GREAT guide to Honolulu and Waikiki! (Didn't go too many other places on Oahu this trip, so I cannot comment on the rest of the book's usefulness.)
